Brie Larson wins the Oscar for Best Actress for ‘Room’

31st Independent Spirit Awards - Arrivals
Brie Larson, 26, has won the Best Actress Academy Award for her incredible portrayal of a kidnapped mom in the fictional drama Room. Brie so expertly played a mother in the worst of circumstances trying to do the best thing for her child. She was able to convincingly portray a woman who was both clinically depressed and desperately hopeful for a better future. They also made Jacob Tremblay’s character, her son Jack, seem realistically annoying and pestering at times, like a typical kid. The relationships in the film seemed real, and you felt for her character and all she had lost. Brie was considered a lock for this category as she’s swept this awards season, taking home the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. After Brie’s segment was shown ahead of her win she turned around and gave Jacob Tremblay a high five! When she heard that she won, Brie kissed her boyfriend, musician Alex Greenwald, and turned around and hugged Jacob.

Brie gave a kind of rushed and well spoken speech, first thanking the film festivals which had given Room a chance. She also thanked their distribution company, their director, the book’s writer, her costar, Jacob Tremblay, whom she called “my partner through this,” and her “real partner,” Alex Greenwald. Brie ended by thanking the fans and film-goers, which was nice. I like that she did that. It was a fun, upbeat speech and it was nice to see her so genuinely excited. She didn’t seem that nervous either, just really happy.

Congratulations to Brie! I hope to see her in many more films to come.

Oh and Brie was in this cobalt blue Gucci gown which I might have liked with an understated belt. This heavy belt kind of ruins the look. We’ll cover this dress and have more fashion for you tomorrow!

This was the expected win that felt good. As opposed to feeling “I’ve been hit over the head with this so many times, I’m just numb.”
Plus I loved her dress just as is, belt and all.

  2. SKF says:

    Congrats Brie!!!

I love the top of her dress and I actually love the belt. Not so fond of the skirt.

  3. lunchcoma says:

This was a generally dull, predictable Oscar ceremony, but even though she was the frontrunner, this win still makes me happy.

  4. Sarah01 says:

She looked beautiful, was the best in her category. i don’t like the belt. I liked the fact she was happy and grateful without the ” omg I can’t believe it, what am I doing here, it’s so surreal”. She was short and sweet.

  5. Ally8 says:

Sorry to all of you who loved this movie, but I find it a bummer that another woman is rewarded by the Oscars for playing an abuse victim well. It is the woman equivalent of black actors being rewarded for playing servants and slaves. These are the roles in which the Academy voters apparently “recognize” and “appreciate” us.

    • iGotNothin says:

      Really?

    • charlie says:

So you’re saying that movies about abuse victims should only have actual victims playing those characters? And that movies about slavery shouldn’t be made anymore? Or if they are, those performances shouldn’t be rewarded? I don’t understand your logic at all.

  6. Brooksie says:

I feel like I need 3D glasses in order to look at the v-neck border of her gown

  7. lskfjsld says:

I didn’t like her gown or her hairstyle but I am so glad she won. Also I watch actor on actor interview with variety and her responses were so amazing. She is an actress for the right reason.

  8. skipper says:

There is also video of her hugging every single one of the sexual assault survivors that stood with Gaga after they came off the stage. Now that is a class act! I cried while watching it.

  9. islandwalker says:

    A well deserved win.

  10. I am SO GLAD that she won! She was amazing, and I actually wanted to see more of her in the movie, and see more of her story.

  11. NUTBALLS says:

Yea, for Brie! I think she’s a great talent and look forward to seeing her upcoming films.

  12. Nic919 says:

The shoutout to the Toronto Film Festival just got her on the lead of all Canadian newscasts and a membership to TIFF for life.
Room did win the audience award there too.

  13. JFresh says:

Haven’t seen the movie yet so don’t have an opinion on her performance but I just want to say that she has such a normal, low key, friendly prettiness about her. Love looking at her face. And I think she is going to age incredibly well.

  14. sunny says:

Love her! She seems so down to earth and she is really talented. Watch Short Term 12- I think her performance there was even better than her work in Room(which I felt kind of tapered off the back half of the film after an amazing first hour). She is also really endearing and funny in 21 Jump Street . Glad she won tonight though I like Saoirse’s performance as well.

I was not a fan of her dress or her styling at all though. I think she is so fresh and pretty she managed to transcend what was a not great outfit.

  15. Dangles says:

Now she’ll have to make “Room” on her mantelpiece for her Oscar.

  16. ichsi says:

I like the dress. The belt is weird but the rest looks so beautiful and flow-y. I haven’t seen the movie yet, isn’t out yet over here, but I’ll definitely am going to watch it now.

  17. The Other Katherine says:

I think the belt makes the look, tbh. Not crazy about the hair, though.

  18. Julia says:

Haven’t seen the movie yet but I read the book last year and it was AWESOME!

  19. ell says:

yessss, so deserved, she was wonderful in room. and her dress was my fav of the night, so pretty.

  20. Minxx says:

I’m so glad she won, she’s truly a gifted actress and a really humble, down to earth person. You can tell that she wasn’t in it for the awards, she’s genuine and personable.

  21. Luciana says:

I love her entire look: colour, dress, belt, everything. She looked so beautiful in motion.

  22. frantasticstar says:

This dress is magnificent, belt included. Great colour.

  23. Aang says:

I wasn’t blown away by her in Room. She was out acted and overshadowed by the boy, who really deserved the award Dicaprio got. As was mentioned above by Ally8, I’ve seen too many women play the victim for it to be fresh.

    • SwanLake says:

+1000. The boy was much more compelling. I thought Brie’s performance was nothing special and have no idea why she was nominated. It’s the story and circumstances that draw in the viewer, not her screen presence. Her looks over the weekend were terrible.

    • Josefina says:

I think the boy was obviously going to overshadow her because he was the more interesting character. He was a boy looking at the outside world for the first time, while Brie was a normal girl in weird circumstances.

  24. NewWester says:

In certain angles, I get a younger Robin Wright vibe. I am glad she won
