Reese Witherspoon & Tina Fey in exact shade of purple at the Oscars: no biggie?

88th Annual Academy Awards - Red Carpet Arrivals
Everyone was clucking at the Oscars that Reese Witherspoon and Tina Fey were wearing the same shade of deep purple, which I didn’t really get. During the E! Oscars fashion lead-up, Brad Goreski said that jewel tones were going to be one of the big trends this year, which I appreciate as those colors really pop on the carpet. When we have two women in the same red or blue color it’s no big deal, this is just a color we’re not used to seeing. Plus the cut of these two dresses is much different, it’s not like they’re wearing variations of the same dress.

So Reese was in this rather fug Oscar de la Renta strapless gown which would be a typical red carpet dress if it wasn’t for the bizarre bunched up boob shelf with a black bra thing peeping out and the mini bustle at the back. We’ve seen Reese in such amazing, spot on red carpet dresses and it’s like she’s lost her footing. Her usual style is a classic, clean look and this is definitely an ill thought out departure.

Tina Fey, on the other hand, pretty much slayed in Versace. This is how you work a bright color, with a clean dress which has some thoughtful, understated details. I absolutely love the draping in this gown and the way the fabric is gathered to the side to fabric trailing slightly at the waist. This type of draping was popular a few years ago and I like that it’s making a comeback. This is an amazing dress. Check out her necklace. Perfect styling too.

I’m including Tina’s buddy here, Amy Poehler, whom I just feel sorry for. She was in Andrew GN, in a giant black dress with bell sleeves and very large embroidered bugs and greenery. Giant bug embroidery is a thing. The obvious joke here involves squashing.

Tina Fey looks AMAZEBALLS! That is all

    • MacScore says:

Yup. Tina’s dress: fantastic cut, fits her perfectly. Reese’s dress, on the other hand, is most unfortunate indeed – looks as if she’s wearing a sports bra underneath….

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yes!!! When I first saw her I thought she was Natalie Portman (who IMO is usually one of the best dressed on the red carpet) and that’s a major compliment.

    • vauvert says:

Best dress of the night, I thought. Cut, colour, fit… All perfect. Reese’s dress is terrible, apart from the colour. And Amy’s dress was horrendous.

    • Karen says:

I appreciate Tina so much! Beauty and brains. Perfectly fit dress (and not cut to her belly button). Beautiful color. Great big ol’ jewels. Actually styled hair.

I feel like everyone forgets the Oscars were originally white tie. Now unofficially black tie.

    • I Choose Me says:

Right? Old Hollywood Glam. That’s what I thought when I saw her. Hands down my favourite dress of the night.

    • NUTBALLS says:

That’s what I thought. One of the few great RC dresses last night.

    • Diana B says:

      Perfection. That is all.

    • zinjojo says:

Loved Tina’s looks; the dress was so well fitted, the cut and color is gorgeous, and the detailing at the waist is so flattering.

Reese’s dress didn’t do her any favors at all, and her makeup was awful. Too. Much. Blush.

    • NYer says:

Definitely best dressed. Perfect hourglass figure.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I like the dress, but not the hair and necklace. Her bit with Steve Carell wasn’t funny at all.

What is the material of Reese’s dress? Because I’ve never seen a gown made of that look good.

    • Cupcake says:

This is the best Tina has EVER looked. Stunning, sexy hourglass figure. I hope I look half as good at 45. Best overall look of the night!

    • Carol says:

Tina Fey looked amazing. Her dress was ‘throw the mic down’ good. It just hugged her figure in all the right places. She just keeps getting better looking as she ages. Damn her.

I never liked Reese Witherspoon “style” and would argue she has no style. The only thing I liked about her look was the color of her dress.

Liked Amy Poehler’s dress. I would have done her hair differently and maybe her makeup, but her dress was beautiful.

    • Deedee says:

Tina hit it out for the park! One of her bests looks, ever! Reese looks like a tool.

  2. Tpaz says:

I actually loved Amy’s dress! It was just the wrong dress for the occasion.

    • MB says:

I totally agree. I feel like it’s something she could wear to the Met Gala or something.
      Tina has never looked better!
Reece’s dress is not great. It’s puffy around the hips / thigh area which makes her look bigger than she is. If it were a different fabric that was able to be really fitted to her shape, it would have looked a lot better.

    • LadyJane says:

Me too – love it. One of the best dresses of the night.

      • Anare says:

I thought Reece’s makeup was dreadful. It looks like a child did it for her. Stop with the blush. She looks like a clown. The dress looks like taffeta. Hard fabric to work with. Hate the black showing on the bodice. Looks like a mistake. Hate the skirt, too much fabric and just a smidge too long. Hate her hair like that. Make her head look misshapen. Just all around no. Tina Feys dress is beautiful.

    • Lucy2 says:

I actually kind of like it and think it’s interesting, but agree it is not right for this event.

    • LtoZ says:

i loved it too! i think she was one of the best dressed. she personally wasn’t up for an award. why not be comfortable? her styling was 100% on point. i think the dress could have been better tailored but i think it is amazing.

    • Bridget says:

How is it not occasion appropriate? She’s neither nominated nor presenting. The gown is fun and interesting! I like it a lot.

  3. Lennox says:

Reese must have been super annoyed by being compared to Tina, bearing in mind Reese’s dress is a crumpled, unflattering mess and Tina’s is a goddess dress. Seriously, her figure is AMAZING.
I bet Amy was the most comfortable person there that night.

  4. ell says:

it’s not the same shade though, it’s slightly different. both dresses look ugly btw. amy’s dress though is very pretty and different, good choice. andrew gn is on a roll atm, his latests collections are very nice.

    • Erinn says:

Reese’s is slightly more blue leaning, and Tina’s is more red – I like Tina’s shade and dress better.

  5. Kate says:

Reese’s dress didn’t fit at all! it made her look puffy and Amy’s dress did the same for her. Missteps from both.

  6. Brie says:

Tina for the win with the classy purple dress, she looks great. Is Reece pregnant because that dress makes her look pregnant. Not one of her best looks.

    • Rhiley says:

Tina for the win for sure. Reese looks like she has a black lacy bra peeking over the top. Not good.

  7. Mia4s says:

    Tina>>>>>>>>Reese.

    In soooooo many ways.

  8. Kristen says:

Tina really looked amazing, especially when she was presenting. That necklace is fabulous!!

  9. Sisi says:

Reese’s overdone makeup is the worst no-no on this page

    • Say Whaa? says:

You said it Sisi! What was she thinking?..again…I think I’ve seen that clown face on her before.

    • zinjojo says:

There was a lot of bad and overdone makeup on this red carpet, and Reese’s was the worst. That blush and lip color are competing to see which can be brighter.

  10. littlemissnaughty says:

Tina’s dress looks amazing, that’s a perfect fit. Reese, my favorite American Citizen, got lost on her way to prom. That dress is all kinds of ill-advised. The fabric, the cut, the … all of it. Didn’t they iron it???

  11. paolanqar says:

Looks like Reese banged her head on a makeup box.

  12. Minxx says:

I can’t stand Reese so it’s easy for me to hate this look – ill-fitting dress and terrible, clownish makeup. What was she thinking?
Tina is a goddess in a perfect dress, hair and makeup. LOVE everything about it.
What happened to Amy? She looked so good at the GGs and now this…

  13. chloe says:

Tina looks great, Reece not so much.

  14. Franny Days says:

Reese looks like a boring eggplant.

  15. noway says:

Reese’s looks like a prom dress pure and simple, even with the overdone makeup. Loved Tina and this dress and fit she looked beautiful.

  16. Lucy2 says:

Who cares if they wore the same color, doesn’t that happen all the time?
I loved Tina’s dress, I thought it was a perfect fit, very flattering, and effortlessly elegant.
Reese’s was a bit fussy and not one of her better choices.

  17. TheGrandSophy says:

Tina – superb! Great colour, hair, silhouette and jewels.

    Reese – no. Just no.

Amy – I think it could have worked if the bottom of the dress ended in a sheath or column rather than dragging on the ground.

  18. missmerry says:

I think Amy looks pretty fierce in that first photo, but knowing she’s very short, this overwhelms her, especially with the big sleeves.

omg Tina! hottest mom on the block.

  19. Mrs. Darcy says:

Tina Fey looks magnificent, no wonder Reese is sucking on lemons posing in her purple Quality Street wrapper frock! Amy’s dress is not the problem, I hate to say it but she is just too short for that amount of volume and big print in one dress, it would have looked fine on someone taller. Her hair is weird too, I love the red colour on her but the messy on purpose updo isn’t great.

  20. serena says:

I really dislike Reese’s dress, it’s that type that makes it looks like it’s too small or so 90s. Tina Fey on the other hand was perfect!!!

  21. Murphy says:

I love Tina’s look, two thumbs up

  22. Lola says:

    Tina looked stunning!

  23. Grant says:

Love me some Tina Fey, dress looks nice, but I don’t like her up-do. It’s too severe.

    • OGBklynGirl says:

Agree. And also would have preferred a more interesting necklace. This one felt very ‘traditional’ .

  24. Farhi says:

Amy looks great in that dress, even with giant embroidery. And that hair color is great on her as well.

  25. felixswan2 says:

Tina looked amazing in that dress. The fit and color are perfect! On the other hand, Reese’s dress is doing nothing for her. I usually love Reese’s red carpet looks, but this was a big no.

  26. Jwoolman says:

They look like very different shades of purple to me. Tina’s is also a bright, reflective color while Reese’s is not (I assume due mainly to different types of fabric?). Or is this one of those Internet color perception tests?

  27. What's inside says:

I do not think these shades of purpose are exactly alike. Tina’s dress was wonderful on her, Amy needs to go sit down and hope no one takes any more pictures of her in that monstrosity, and I really hate the bodice on that dress that Reece is wearing though her makeup and hair are perfection.

  28. Tredd says:

A brunette and a blonde who couldn’t BE more opposite? No big thang.
    They BOTH look amazing.
I don’t LOVE blonds (zzzzzzz), but this Southern Belle NEVER disappoints.
    Classy gal.

  29. JenniferJustice says:

OMG. OMG. What must Reese have been thinking to see Fey (6 years her senior) wearing that same color and looking better in it, having a better dress, and having a better body to boot? I love it! Take that you slurry ‘murican!
