So, Alicia Vikander has an Oscar now. You know who doesn’t have an Oscar? Mark Ruffalo. Glenn Close. Harrison Ford. Amy Adams. Samuel L. Jackson. Michael Fassbender. You know who has never even been nominated for an Oscar? Michael B. Jordan. Yes, I’m still butthurt about Vikander’s Oscar win. I suppose I’ll get over it. For now, let’s take a moment and look at Vikander’s party dress. After the Oscars, she changed out of her butter-yellow mullet dress and put on this slinky black Louis Vuitton number for the Vanity Fair party. While this is “safe” and “boring” compared to the risky butter dress, I would not have hated it all if this LV dress had been her Oscar dress. Her hair looks much better here too, but that’s not difficult – her Oscar hair was THE WORST.

Emilia Clarke in Miu Miu. Jesus, she cannot dress AT ALL. Is this a case of a young woman having a bad stylist, or is it a case of a young woman having no idea how to dress her body? Because at this point, Emilia is almost always one of the worst-dressed women at any event.

Genuine question – how long is the time frame these people have between attending/winning their Oscar and going to the parties? Because it seems like a total image change must take a while.
Perfect party dress, but a little too subtle for the red carpet IMO. I think I’m one of a few people on the interweb who enjoyed Alicia’s buttercup dress – it wasn’t perfect, but it was memorable and I can appreciate a bit of risk-taking.
Funny you ask that question because I wondered that too. It seems they change in a blink of an eye in what I would think would take a bit of time. I loved Alicia’s yellow dress too, but this LV dress is a knock out!
I prefer her party dress and look, THIS should have been her red carpet style. She has Katie Bucket hair; long, lank and in dire need of some body or a good cut.

Younger women generally win an Oscar though. She’s not an anomaly in that regard. I don’t think her win is a strange as Marisa Tomei’s for My Uncle Vinny (and I like Marisa Tomei). Vikander probably deserves her Oscar more than Sandra Bullock did (and I like Sandra Bullock too, but geez that performance wasn’t that good).
I’m not sure that the Sandra Bullock comparison is a fair one. The film was awful, but that award felt like one of those “It’s your time” ones, where the recipient gets an award for their body of work or their star power still being bright rather than the actual film they were nominated for. It happened to Scorsese as well. Vikander doesn’t have those decades of good-will and tenacity behind her yet, so although she might have given a good performance in comparison it’s easy to see how, to the Academy, Bullock deserves the award more.
But you’re spot on about the Tomei analogy. Hollywood likes its ingénues and young actresses, while tending to award/nominate actors later in their careers (see Abigail Breslin versus Jacob Tremblay for example). Unfortunately, younger actresses can have a pretty fallow time after their win for some reason, and most don’t recover from it.
But Sandra Bullock’s body of work isn’t that good either (Miss Congeniality is fun and amusing, but….).Nor was that individual performance really good. Still, I’ll admit that her star power burns brightly. She has an easy charm and a certain light touch. And she brings in the money. Nonetheless, it’s still strange to my ears whenever I hear “Oscar Winner Sandra Bullock,” if we’re going to assume that the Oscars are about a different level of transformative acting from movie-star charm. Even Julia Roberts does a better job than Bullock at transforming in a role.
Sure, Vikander doesn’t have decades of good-will behind her, but most of the people who win the award on the actress side don’t. Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t have decades of good-will when she won one nor did a ton of others who didn’t start out as child stars. And people often complain that make-up Oscars are given over outstanding individual performances. In this case, the individual performance that was most likely pretty good won.
I also think it’s more surprising when someone over 40 wins that award — actresses seem to have a better shot of winning that thing when they’re under 35, which is probably why Amy Adams doesn’t have one. She probably would have one if her nominations had come in her 20s.
On the flip side, I think you have to get to 40 on the men’s side to have a good shot at winning one (which would explain Leo’s 5 nominations and current win at 41). Once in a while a younger guy like Eddie Redmayne comes in(and he still wasn’t as young as when Gwyneth won), but it seems like you have to get past a certain age on the men’s side in order to win. Maybe Michael Fassbender will win one when he’s 45 and looks 60.
Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts were given Oscars for putting butts in seats. With the exceptions of Jared Leto and Christian Bale, Best Supporting is typically a “life time achievement award” to an old guy (Alan Arkin, Christopher Plummer, James Coburn, Jack Palance). With the exception of Patricia Arquette, Supporting Actress typically goes young (Penelope Cruz, Marisa Tomei, Mira Sorvino). Another exception is when a person of color manages to break through in a outstanding role (Mo’nique, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Hudson, Barkhad Abdi)
Sandra’s body of work deserves an Oscar? Hmmm… I think it’s more a case of her being well-liked and also it was a white saviour film that made people feel like they were positive about racial equality.
I also think that there are way fewer meaty roles for women (particularly women over 35) than there are men so the female categories are sometimes weak. Hollywood loves to award ingenues and men with a body of work.
Yeah and to be fair every ‘doesn’t have an Oscar’ mentioned was a man. So it’s not like Alicia took her Oscar from Micheal B Jordan. I’d rather call out some of the stupid nominations in the male category.

And this is why I don’t give a damn about the Oscars, except to gossip about the fashion. In a world where Amy Adams and Harrison bloody Ford do not have an Oscar, how much do they really reflect quality? On not just one movie, but a consistent body of work?

I think Emilia look better as Dany too, but partly because I prefer her as a blonde. Some of her dresses (especially the turquoise one she wore in Qarth in season 2) are amazing too.
OMG I am so over this trend too. I don’t get it at all and every other woman is wearing a dress cut like to every event. i always feel like your asking for a dress malfunction (umm esp Olivia wildes version, but all of them really). I wish so bad Emilia had a better stylist because she is sooooo pretty and has some curves she could show off while still being petite but always look straight up frumpy. Makes me so mad!

But I will say this: if Bendy gets the Olivier this year over all the other nominees, I will be at least as butthurt as you are about this Oscar. So I feel your pain!
If he gets it over Mark Rylance I will be dusting off my pitchfork! I never saw his Hamlet but from what i’ve been told while he was good, he wasn’t award worthy good.
I also liked the yellow dress and that Olivier Best Actor list had me singing: “one of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong!”

You can console yourself with the fact that Rylance has an Oscar and Ben C. doesn’t. And Branagh has been nominated 5 times.
To me it is not a competition, I like all 3 of them. But I think it is very unlikely to be Ben C.

I honestly did like the yellow dress! It combined pretty with completely nuts. I think that is cool! Having said that, I have no dress sense whatsoever, so possibly best not to listen to me?
Vis a vis Olivier – I’m actually rooting for Adrian Lester, since Red Velvet, which I thought was fab, has just that single nomination. But I’d not be upset to see it go to Cranham, Rylance or even Branagh. If it’s Bendy, I will be worse than #kaisersomean with Vikander, I really will.
I’ve heard good things about Lester’s performance. He’s brilliant, isn’t he? Rylance was just here in another play, also good. I saw a broadcast of Branagh’s Winter Tale and much preferred it over Hamlet Pushing 40.

He is great! And his wife wrote the play. I saw it at the Tricycle on its first run a few years back (also with Lester). Plus, it was Branagh’s company that brought it back so he could make do with a vicarious Olivier for it, right? If I had to go in order of preference, it would be 1) Lester, 2) Cranham (never won before), 3) Rylance, 4) Branagh. Not even a 5) for Bendy!
Cranham does a lot of theatre, doesn’t he? I think I remember him from Rome, one of my most favoritist (new word!) tv shows ever. Honestly, although Sir Bendy’s performance did not stink, it doesn’t even make my top five Hamlets. And the production, and he was a producer so he had some say, irked me as way too self-indulgent. Playing “Nature Boy” doesn’t change the fact that your Hamlet is pushing 40.
As for Alicia, so far, I like her work and want to see more.
Lots of theatre, yes. And he is a popular character actor on TV this side of the Pond. I just yesterday watched him with Hayley Mills in a little one-act drama. Moving On is the series of playlets, if you’re playing with iPlayer. The BBC does a lot of this quiet, unnoticed stuff and half the time it’s better than the prime time fare!
I seem to like Vikander for all the reasons everyone else dislikes her! She’s forward, blunt, completely self-confident. And sometimes a bit snippy. Other people see thirsty and arrogant, so it seems, but I really don’t.
She has all the traits people seem to look for in men but criticize in a woman. I don’t find her offensive and I have enjoyed her work in the films I’ve seen. More power to her. I don’t think that will be her last Oscar go-round either. She’ll be back. She can disappear from the US view by doing European films so people here won’t grow tired of her.
I prefer this dress and the necklace to the yellow one.
Alicia’s hair looks so much better in these photos, the hairstyle she had at the oscars is the way you would wear your hair when you’re at home cleaning the house and you just can’t be bothered to do anything with it . This dress is also much nicer than the duvet (parachute?) mullet dress, I like it.
Regarding Alicia: I don’t know if it’s something about her eyes, the way she tilts her head when her photo is taken or maybe her eye make-up, but to me she always looks so tired. As if she hasn’t slept in days, looking a bit groggy with circles under her eyes.
But I do love both her Oscar dresses!
Circles may be from bad circulation due to smoking, because she does smoke like a chimney. Alternatively she’s in Hollywood, in Oscar week and is nominated: party time!
I’m not butt hurt she is a good acctress and within her category was the best. I really like her a lot and she’s going to be around a while cause she’s versatile and not one dimensional.

If things were up to me, I would’ve given her the leading Oscar for Ex-Machina. I think that was easily my favorite performance of 2015.

Oscars are very much about campaigning and politics. It is a nice award to have as it opens more opportunities but it doesn’t signify an artistic merit or lack of it all in itself.
She’s young and beautiful so she can get away with looks that other as can’t I think. I liked her ex machina so her win isn’t some grave injustice to me-at least she’s talented.
All I can say is that Alan Rickman did not get even a nomination and he never will now. :((((

I like this dress better but I did like the buttery duvet as well, it was odd but it worked. I had buttery silk balloon shades once in the bedroom, with triple lining and they looked a lot like her dress – gorgeous bounce 🙂 The hair was a bit twee though.
I disagree completely about Vikander, no matter opinions here, there’s one thing I think we can all agree on, she’s a hardworking woman that’s the way her colleagues call her and she was a ballet dance, I don’t think she wants to be an It girl in an interview she said that Isabelle Huppert the French actress is her model, doesn’t strike me as very it girly. Therefore she speak multiple languages and she can learn fast, she did it with A Royal Affair. So with all that I think she’s gonna last long, maybe it’s because I have more faith in European actresses.
Gwyneth Paltrow has an oscar for best actress, not supporting actress. As for Vikander i am not really angry about her win – even if it was an obvious category fraud and even if i love Winslet-because she had a good year and she’s talented .But really if you didn’t mind the category fraud , Rooney was better and was in the better movie.
And i also feel like her win is quite underwhelming, like nobody really cares about her winning even though she’s presented like the new “it girl” for months.
I don’t know if it will really help her career. Paltrow was the ultimate It girl, and we al see where her career went.

@Mario”Cheat your way in” the girl has three performance in Indie Poll and she has been critic darling for a while now. She stared in one of the best movie of the year Ex Machina. As for the media well if I judge by the comments on Celebitchy, well apparently she’s interesting enough, her dress was also on trending Twitter, she had a Vogue cover and others magazine. Another test for her is Jason Bourne I don’t see how the movie could fail the box office, so if she has a good role she could attract a new audience. And again what Decaprio has to do with all this, since when he’s an indicator of success. As for Lawrence I’m maybe not the biggest fan but she proved she can act and she’s no longer an it girl so admired her choice career doesn’t strike me as wrong.

Emilia C- that is such a sad sack dress. I saw the trailer for Me Before You. I was so bummed bec they turned a so not “manic pixie girl” character in the book to exactly that for the movie. I will take CB’s word that she is a good actress in GOT, but that trailer was very disappointing.

This dress is kind of ‘meh’ but it’s 100% better than her cloying Oscars outfit, which I really disliked. Hair much better too. And Alicia must have a very restrictive contract with LV – she wears their dresses pretty much every single time. Usually stars are allowed to mix it up a bit now and then with other labels, but Alicia’s contract must oblige her to wear LV at almost every high-profile event.
And while all the GoT stars look better on the show than they do in real life, Emilia’s is an extreme case. I actually don’t even think she’s that gorgeous as Khaleesi, but she looks downright frumpy most of the time when she’s not in character. And she seems to be the only GoT star who gets invited – or chooses to attend – events like this.
I like this one more too,but it’s an Oscar-worthy dress. Her SAG dress was better.
They have rewarded her for her breakthrough year. Most of the oscar ballots I read had the same reasoning. They wanted to reward her for Ex Machina too. Mara and Vikander were the best in their category,but her performances in Testament of Youth and Ex Machina are even better.
