Dakota Johnson & Jamie bring vanilla realness to ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ set

Here are some photos from the Vancouver set of Fifty Shades Darker. I took one for the team and not only watched Fifty Shades of Grey, but I also read all three books of the original Fifty Shades trilogy. But! I have not read Grey, the retelling of the Fifty Shades saga (ha) told through Christian Grey’s perspective. Still, I think I know what’s happening in these photos.

SPOILERS! At the end of the first book and first movie, Ana leaves Christian to his depravity, because she sees that it’s not really about an S&M lifestyle as it is about Christian being a misogynist who wants to physically hurt her. When the second book picks up, Christian and Ana quickly find their way back to each other within a matter of, like, a week I think. And the story continues, with lots of sex and stupid drama (Ana’s new boss is trying to seduce her, one of Christian’s exes is stalking him, Ana hates Kim Basinger’s character) and Christian keeps begging Ana to marry him, because he’s known her for all of like six weeks (if that). At some point, Christian begins to really give Ana a makeover, which we will hopefully see in the second movie because seriously, her hair in these photos is even worse than her hair in the first movie.

As for the first movie… I found myself enjoying parts of it more than I was expecting. Not the sexy parts, but the parts where Dakota Johnson tried to bring some life, humor and agency to the Ana character. I don’t know what to expect with the second and third films, considering E.L. James is reasserting her vision of Ana-as-doormat and Sam Taylor Johnson has been pushed out.

Incidentally, Fifty Shades of Grey dominated this year’s Razzie Awards. I’m not saying that FSOG is a good movie (it is not), but was it really worse than Fantastic Four or Alvin & the Chipmunks: Road Chip?

Why all the hate on her hair? She looks like a normal person.

    • Zip says:

It’s not allowed to look like a normal person. Why do you think people in movies wake up all pretty and made up?! 😉

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I think her hair looks better in this movie than the first one. The fringe from the first movie was horrible & the movie too.

    • Mimz says:

Yeah I never read the books, saw the movie, and I liked how “normal” she looked. I don’t mind the hair either.

  2. Jess says:

I’m sorry but Jamie is HOT! That is all.

    • mia girl says:

I really do think he’s attractive.
I find her to be quite charming on screen.
But together, there is no spark. It’s weird.

      • NeoCleo says:

So true. The awkwardness between these two is rather painful. However, they are both very pretty people. I hope Dormer gets something out of this for his career. Frankly, I’m worried this part may end it.

    • Anett says:

I agree, there was some awkwardness, but are you surprised? For someone who is not for S&M how difficult to even play this character. She was 24 at the time of the 1st film, I think she did a decent job. Let’s wait and see how the 2nd will turn out. But to be honest looking this pics through they seem to be quite comfortable in their roles now.:-DD

  3. grabbyhands says:

All of those pictures are painfully awkward and stiff.

And THIS is what gets the Twilight mommies all het up? Weird.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Fifty Shades of Vanilla, Fifty Shades Oatmeal, Fifty Shades Soy Latte Pumpkin Spice.

The Secretary was a way better movie, but the Twilight mommies wouldn’t like that.

  4. Pinky says:

The movie wasn’t hot. He wasn’t hot. She was funny in the negotiating scene. The books are crap. James is a crap “writer,” and the books, and ostensibly the movies on which they are based, get worse as they go on.

In sum, we, society, have failed ourselves.

Yes but we’ve known that since the Kardashians. At least this is fiction, they are actual people. I won’t lie. I’ve watched KUWTK. I’ve also seen this turd of a movie because my bff is obsessed (it was a bit cute because I’ve been reading smut for years and she always laughed at me for it …. revenge is so sweet). KUWTK is at LEAST entertaining. Sometimes.

What I don’t get is, there is some seriously well-written fanfic out there (I don’t know about Twilight or this but for other universes) and THIS is successful? I just don’t understand.

    • whatevers says:

      What you said.

And yes these movies were terrible. Yes more terrible than the fantastic four.

    • Bros says:

      well said.

    • sherry says:

I couldn’t get past Chapter 4 of the first book, because the writing and story were ridiculous and horrid. I watched the movie about a month ago because it was on one of my movie channels (HBO I think). I thought Taylor-Johnson took a horrible storyline and made it an okay movie. Since she’s out for the sequels, I don’t know that I’ll watch the next one, even when it comes free on my television.

      James’ “vision” sucks.

  5. Shambles says:

Oh my GAWD that first photo is tragic. She looks like she’s attempting to act like she enjoys it, and he looks like he’s in pain. Just TRY, Jaimie. You’re stuck here for a while.

  6. Tiffany says:

I liked the first film. I went in with low expectations considering the book was not very good. The studio but a great writer, producer and director on the first and EL just crapped over it. This is going to go downhill for her, fast.

  7. Seapharris7 says:

EL James is a delusional thief.

  8. AB says:

I really like the blue dress. Isn’t she supposed to have bad style in the books?

  9. kri says:

I have seen more chemistry in a grade school science class. My GOD you people are actors! Fake it! She looks like a cat that is getting licked by a dog. Same expression.

  10. Londongal says:

STJ elevated this shitpile to heights it didn’t remotely deserve. this is going to be such an epic bag of shite without anyone to bring some quality.

  11. marshmellow says:

Why is this film even being made? I only know of six people I met on a FSOG fan forum who actually enjoyed the film enough to see it again. Everybody else I’ve heard from only saw it because of the hype. Sure, the first film made a lot of money, but only in the first couple days, and it dropped drastically after people got the morbid curiosity out of their system. I doubt most of the people who saw the first film are going to see the second…

  12. Ninks says:

I’m actually really glad that James herself is so involved with the sequels. Any redeeming feature of the first movie came because of STJ and any remotely positive reviews were pretty vocal about that. With her gone and James firmly in the driving seat, I don’t think there’s anything that can save this from being an utter disaster. I’m going to enjoy watching the reviews and critics go all in for these. Nobody deserves an ego check more.

  13. Nibbi says:

it bugs me that her hair is longer and his is darker.
    continuity, people.
cuz i mean now she makes me think of Kate Middleton and that just feels wrong.

  14. Carina says:

Whoa first picture I thought Johnson kissing Henry Cavill?? lol

  15. Izzy says:

The ONLY nice thing I will ever be able to say about FSOG is that it gave us the parody Fifty Shades of Black, which was hilarious. It parodied just about every stereotype, totally mocked Grey, and was absolutely hilarious.

  16. Anon33 says:

The only good thing about this is they obviously realized Dornan isn’t good looking without facial hair.

  17. MrsNix says:

Okay, so here’s the thing: FSOG – the whole thing – is painfully bad. That’s a consensus stipulation, I think. What I am astounded by is why so many people seem confused by its popularity. It’s really quite simple.

She took erotica (Yes, I’m gagging to have to call it that…but it is) mainstream.

Women in the United States and developed Western nations like the UK (think: “Christendom” of history) are all socially and culturally programmed to just eat their sexual fantasies. If it ain’t for procreation, it’s naughty and shameful.

Now. We all know – at least most of us do – that this is all nonsense. Knowing it and eradicating the programming are two entirely different things. Sure. There is a lot of classic erotica out there, and it’s written beautifully. But is it on the NYT Best Seller’s List? Is it marketed in bookstores the average, slightly sexually repressed Western woman visits? Is it in the Romance section, or is it in some obscure and shameful, taboo-laden “adult” corner of the store?

C’mon! This is not a mystery.

The woman wrote books about things women fantasize about, and she did it badly…but she did it in the public areas of the marketplace where normal, average, everyday masses would see it for sale.

    That’s all this is.

  18. Liyou says:

he looks like a choffeurr lr.something standing there so awkwardly next to her. I cant imagine them as a couple at all and the movie was a bif let down.

  20. Sarah01 says:

He is a beautiful man and with the Irish accent doesn’t get better than that!
I think she’s very pretty and will get better with age.

  21. Tig says:

When does season 3 of The Fall start? Jamie D is a gorgeous man, so hope he’ll survive this career-wise. I will prob go see the second to see what Kim B does with that role.

  22. na na says:

it’s so awkward I want to cringe on their behalf. WHY those it have to happen at all?? I heard they both disliked the book alot.
