Robert Pattinson on turning 30 this year: ‘Why does my arse look like this?!’

Robert Pattinson covers the latest issue of Numéro Homme, a French magazine. This cover… well, it’s a nice shot of Rob, actually, except that I’m focused intently on that absolutely bizarre suit he’s wearing. Weird. I’ve been reading the full Numero piece, which is quite amusing because of an English-to-French-back-to-English translation. In the translation, Rob comes across as very erudite and intellectual. I’m not saying he’s NOT like that in real life, but in his straight English-language interviews, there are usually more “likes” and “you knows” and “ugh, whatevers.” Still, since it feels like we haven’t heard from him in months, enjoy:

His image from the Twilight era: “I imagine the audience kept a certain image of me. I always feel like I have to prove myself. I did not have enough lead roles to make them forget about it or to see me any differently. Waiting for that, I follow my path, with the constant reminder to diversify myself.”

His work with Dior: “Since the beginning they have all been adorable with me. At the first appointment, they told me “you do whatever you want”. The decision was easy to make because Dior never forced me to do anything. I think there are some clauses in my contract they never told me to respect (laughs)! Publicly appearances for example… It is quite cool. Our collaboration just extended to the clothing campaign from this year on, which will premiere in April. I feel really at ease in this non corporate atmosphere.”

Self-doubt: “I still have lots of doubts about myself. The people I work with know this. Three weeks before filming, I just panic and call my family or friends telling them I will never be able to do it… At that moment I really think it is the truth, my confidence leaves me, reduced in tatters. And then it is back when I enter the set. Even knowing this, the next time, it happens again. The people around me don’t even listen to me anymore…”

Leaving LA: “Leaving Los Angeles contributed to my equilibrium as well. When we are there, the brain works weirdly, we imagine that leaving the city for a week will make us disappear from the radars. In England, where I came back to, all the people I meet don’t work in the cinema industry.

Gossip about his love life: “Sometimes I go through times when it makes me completely mad. I wonder what people are looking for when they type my name. Certainly gossips. Are they alone at home? That said, my career has not suffered from it, I am not blacklisted anywhere yet. I am working with whoever interests me. So, I don’t have the intention to force the audience to change their point of view. I need things to go in an organic way. Maybe one day I’ll be seen differently. Well, I must admit I still fall into the trap, to fall into Internet limbo by looking at what is said about me. At least I never felt the need to leave comments! Sometimes, I would like to and I would like to have a twitter account to do so. But I know I would spend too much time on it. I would lose myself into it all night long. Nevertheless, I hope to avoid this kind of life. It is the reason why I don’t sign up!”

Turning 30: “Honestly, it is terrifying!… I tried some clothes yesterday, the model on the presentation image must have been 14. And looking at myself in the mirror I wondered “But why does my arse look like this?!”

[From Numero Homme via Thinking of Rob]

I thought he might have left LA. I’d be willing to bet that he still keeps a place in LA, but he’s been working a lot lately, plus when he got engaged to FKA Twigs, she seemed to want to make their home back in London. I also enjoy the fact that no matter what he’s doing, Rob always keeps it real about paying attention to what’s being said about him. Rob reads about himself. He’s just that guy. Not only does he read about himself, he admits it in interviews. And I think he would enjoy having a Twitter account, if only to share his daily thoughts about his arse.

Meanwhile, as Rob mentioned in this interview, his Dior contract has been expanded and now he’s the face of Dior Homme apparel. Karl Lagerfeld was brought in to shoot the new campaign, and you can see the first images below. I do have to wonder… Lagerfeld hand-selected Kristen Stewart to represent Chanel, so do you think she’s pissed that Lagerfeld is now shooting ad campaigns with Sparkles?

    Isn’t he beautiful after all?

  2. Jenna says:

I honestly had no idea he was nearly 30. I assumed he was around 25/26. Wow.

  3. mia girl says:

Aww, I missed Sparkles. He looks really good in the pictures that KL took.

The interview translation does seem a little wacky. I doubt Pattinson called the Dior people “adorable”.

  4. Hudson Girl says:

    I really like the pics.
But, my question is why is Chanel’s designer photographing Dior’s ad campaign?!

    • Fenty says:

He works as a hired photographer for other brands from time to time. But it’s kinda weird – what’s the motivation of doing the best job for people you’re actually competing with?

  5. Gisy says:

why should Kristen be pissed? she’s beautiful and Rob is handsome and it’s called a job. She’s still fronting heavily for Chanel and a new contract might be in the works

  6. CornyBlue says:

I like him so much more now. He seems more nuanced and at peace with himself. Is he still a bad actor ? I have not seen any of his recent work.

  7. leah says:

He looks so much better now, really handsome. There was a period right at the end of Twilight where he looked really bad.

  8. Tig says:

Can’t help it- I cracked up over turning 30
and what happened to my arse? comment. I don’t like the Dior shoot with Karl L, but do like the shoot for the mag. I hope there’s a press tour for Lost City of Z- that should be amazing!

    • Pandy says:

LOVED the arse comment – he’s pretty funny in interviews. Not a big fan either of his shoot – KL made him look like a vampire again. Intentional?

  9. MoochieMom says:

At least he’s 30 now and I don’t feel bad creepin’ on the Sparkles.

  10. Gina says:

He seems to be trying hard to stay away from gossip, I think I haven’t seen him papped in a while… He annoyed me to death when he was overexposed, but I don’t mind him now. And he’s aged well…

  11. What's inside says:

Best thing he has done was to put some space between him and Hollywood. He was overexposed and it did not look good on him.

  12. sleepless says:

Love the magazine photos but not the KL shoot for Dior. He has matured nicely and looks the best he ever has. Can’t wait for his movies due to be released this year, especially Lost City of Z.
