Tom Hiddleston on the idea of playing James Bond: ‘I love the whole thing’

hiddles sunday times

Tom Hiddleston covered the Sunday magazine edition of The Sunday Times. They used a promotional photo from High Rise on the cover, which is pretty sexy. I do see what you guys say about his legs – Hiddles has GREAT legs. You would think that such a tall, lanky guy would just have skinny bird legs, but no. He’s a runner, so they’re muscular and sexy. Anyway, the Sunday Times is subscription only, but of course the Dragonfly Tumblrs have scans of the full interview, so you can read the full piece here. I only found two parts of the conversation interesting. One is where he tries to move away from the Tumblr fandom and the other is where he’s like actively campaigning to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. Highlights:

When asked if he’s “now tired” of the Loki role & the fandom that came with it: “I feel so grateful. It afforded me an extraordinary opportunity at a particular time. It’s a great character. Lots of depth, lots of fun. The way he caught fire in the imagination of people is still completely surprising and gratifying…. You just have to focus on the work and not allow your head to be turned by stuff that doesn’t matter. The work is the only thing you can control. Everything else – how I am perceived by anyone else – I can’t control. You can’t prepare yourself for loss of anonymity until it happens, so there’s no question that initially it’s confusing. But I hasten to add, there’s nothing more boring than listening to actors whingeing about fame. It’s allowed me to do really interesting work.”

Whether he would be interested in playing James Bond:
“Time magazine ran a poll and there were like, 100 actors on the list, including Angelina Jolie. But yes, it’s nice to be included in the 100. I’m a huge fan of the series. We all went to see Spectre when we were shooting Skull Island in Hawaii. I simply love the theme tune, the tropes and the mythology. I love the whole thing. If it ever came knocking, it would be an extraordinary opportunity… I’m very aware of the physicality of the job. I would not take it lightly.”

[From The Sunday Times via Radio Times]

He’s grateful for what Marvel did for his career… but he’s ready to move on, and he’s ready for everyone else to move on. He’s not saying he doesn’t want to be famous, he just doesn’t want Dragonflies obsessing over who he’s dating and where he is at all times, etc. It will be interesting to see him try to shift his fandom along. I suspect that it will take more than a few words in a handful of interviews.

As for the James Bond stuff… maybe he’s just being nice about all of the good press he’s been getting with The Night Manager. But I really, really hope that Barbara Broccoli isn’t short-listing Hiddles for James Bond. Because for the love of God, no one needs that. While I do think that Daniel Craig is most likely out – the way Spectre ended, it could go either way – I really hope that producers aren’t looking at the current crop of posh British actors for the role.

Here are the most James Bond-y photos I could find of Hiddles.

It is as simple as Elba for Bond. No other way to go.
Tom is way better looking than Daniel Craig whose face looks like it is melting off so it wouldne be the worst replacement.

    • Jess says:

Idris was recently cast in the new Dark Tower movie as Roland so I don’t think it’ll happen unfortunately (unless he has time in his schedule to accept the role).

    • Rachel says:

Idris Elba is too good for Bond, too. To be an effective Bond, you don’t really need to be able to act, just look half-decent in a suit and say the puns with a straight face. I’d much rather have someone like Aidan Turner as Bond, and leave Idris available to do other things that are worthy of his talents e.g. Dark Tower.

      • CornyBlue says:

Well that is true. But I want mediocrely talented POC to also make a living but I cannot think of any mediocrely talented POC. ( wonder why)

      • mom2two says:

I say no way to Hiddleston as Bond. And yes, once Idris took on the role of Roland for The Dark Tower, the chances of him becoming Bond went down significantly. I am little concerned about the Dark Tower film though, they are rushing it to the theaters. It starts shooting in 6 weeks and the studio wants it out by Jan 2017. And judging by the EW interview with the director and Stephen King, it seems like a Jan 2017 release date is pretty firm.

Although if you live in Europe, you can see Idris in a Bond-esque role in the movie Bastille Day.

      • Amelia says:

        Alfie Enoch.
He’s almost certainly too young, but dammit, he’s just so pretty. (Wes, in HTGAWM).

      • CornyBlue says:

@Amelia: That is a very good one but he looks like a puppy.
Edit: I said below I would like to see Rahul Kohli and I stick with him. He is my choice now.

      • Amelia says:

Oh my God, he’s off iZombie!
I totally back that suggestion <3

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

        @momto2-
        Idris is the Gunslinger? Yeeehaw!

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      Yesyesyesyesyes on lovely Idris.

      A hard pass on Hiddles.

    • Anne tommy says:

Frankly Elba’s too old, and unless they cast older actresses a la Bellucci, there’s just going to be more of the late 40s / mid 20s Bond and Bimbo stuff. Tom’s the right age but I’d rather he stayed away from it. Aiden Turner or James Norton maybe…

    • HeyThere! says:

Angie would make such a badass, modern 007!!! Yes to a female James Bond. Why does it have to be a man?? Lol

  2. lilacflowers says:

I suspect that every British boy who grows up to be an actor dreams of playing Hamlet and Bond, so, of course, it is flattering to be considered.

  3. Jess says:

Meh, I’d much rather see the next James Bond be a woman if they are going to reboot the series.

  4. Mia4s says:

Yikes, I hope he’s just being nice. His attempts to break out of Loki-dom have failed so far so I don’t think getting another overwhelming character would do his creative career any favours.

Oh and in before the Elba crowd; the odds of him being Bond went down when he took the Dark Tower series. If it’s a hit? Zero chance he’s Bond.

    • CornyBlue says:

Where are you seeing the odds? Whose improved?

      • Mia4s says:

Just speaking metaphorically. They are not going to want new Bond to be tied to another big franchise. Plus that would make his first movie salary crazy expensive. Plus he’s already on the older side for a first time Bond.

  5. GlimmerBunny says:

I’m still crossing my fingers for another Tom (Hardy), but I wouldn’t hate Hiddles as Bond. He might even make me sympathize with the dated, misogynistic and frankly sort of boring character!

  6. He couldn’t be any worse as Bond than Timothy Dalton was. Those movies were horrible.
But, LBR. They’re just attaching all these actors with Bond to sell magazines and get clicks. Not just Hiddleston has been asked about Bond lately–every actor under 45 with an English accent has been mentioned.

    • T.Fanty says:

TAKE THAT BACK. Timothy Dalton is perfect in EVERYTHING he does. If his Bond failed, it was everyone else’s fault, around him. Prince Barin is never to blame.

      • H says:

Thank you, @T.Fanty Timothy is my second favorite Bond, after Moore.

      • Amelia says:

        YES.
        All hail the Daltinator.
From Bond to Hot Fuzz, his mere presence makes everything at least 25% more enjoyable.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Dalton in Hot Fuzz was everything

      • Cranberry says:

I didn’t care for the Bond movies he was in, but I think that was mostly because I was bored with Bond altogether. That’s the problem with a long (decades) running franchise. It’s going to hit a lull where nobody’s really interested for about 10 yrs regardless how perfect the new guy fits the role. That’s why I say break the race mold and go for Idris although I agree with @Anny that he’s probably too old.

Otherwise I can see how Tom would be a good choice. There’s still a lot of mystery to him. He’s recognizable but not too much and very appealing. Much of mainstream don’t immediately recognize him with out the Loki make up, but yet he seems familiar for some reason. That could work as a draw of curiosity to check out this new yet somewhat familiar Bond.

Plus it must be hard to turn away from job security of being Bond. Even though Dalton is not one of the best remembered or credited Bonds, look at all the work he’s been doing, not bad. (BTW why aren’t there more threads on Penny Dreadful?)

So the question is: Is it better to have been a forgettable Bond and be able to do all sorts of interesting parts because you’re not boxed into a huge commercial stereotype? Or, is it just as good to be Bond and get the big commercial offers and spend the rest of your career trying to bust out of the box perhaps accomplishing it in your 60s during your “comeback”?

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        I liked Dalton!

As for his waxing enthusiastically about Bond, I mean come on now. He’s an actor working in a highly fickle industry. What is he supposed to say? Of course he would take it! In theory, he could crank out a few Bonds, and be set for life. (How this would affect his career trajectory is another story, but it doesn;t seem to be scaring away Feines or Wishaw).

  7. LP says:

I’m honestly confused- the way he talks about Loki does sound like he’s done, and I certainly don’t blame him for wanting to move on, but what about Thor: ragnarok? The way the last Thor movie ended didn’t leave room for him to *not* come back, and I thought I heard that they wanted him for a part in the avengers infinity war movies….

    • Lilacflowers says:

I can’t read the article (can’t make the scan large enough to read on my phone) but he is still under contract with Marvel for at least two films. Marvel has let some actors go (Terence Howard, Edward Norton) but refused others (Natalie Portman)

    • MoochieMom says:

I *think* I read he was contracted for 5 movies so they could or could not call him in for Loki. I don’t know how I feel about him as Bond. My husband would disavow himself completely and never watch another Bond movie again if Hiddleston was Bond and I need those Bond marathons on TV to get things done around the house like binge watch my own shows! 🙂

      • NUTBALLS says:

Tom said he was contracted for 6 films in an interview early on. So he has three left.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I am pretty sure that he is under contract and they can pull him in for at least two more films. Loki is popular and he is such a good company man I doubt they will let him go. (Ed Norton was let go because he was *not* a good company man….)

    • lilacflowers says:

The interview states that he is returning for Thor: Ragnorak.

  8. Eggland's worst says:

Hiddleston as Bond?!? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Respectfully.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Agree. No way.

    • Sarah says:

It would be such a shame – I only just got into James Bond when Casino Royale came out (man that was a great film) and I’ve loved Daniel as Bond. If they pick that soggy white bread excuse for an actor, ill definitely not watch any more!
Plus James Bond should be handsome!

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

No, please, I’m sorry, but I just hate Bond… He deserves soething better…

      • Cranberry says:

        +1

I think he could probably pull it off, but I want to see him expand himself more and create new personas instead of trying to fit into a tired fix role.

  9. ds says:

I’ve been watching The Night Manager. He’s good in it, but I don’t see him as Bond really.

    • KittyKat says:

Neither do I. Hidds is a good actor but lacks that certain something to be Bond. He also comes across a bit PC and not spontaneous or gritty arrogant enough either

  10. Miss Jupitero says:

No to LEGS as Bond. No, no, no. I know certain dragonflies would love it, but that franchise really really needs a Bond of color who is *not* yet another posh actor.

Also, I think Hiddles is at his best doing intriguing indies. I look forward to High Rise.

  11. T.Fanty says:

He sounds like he’s just being polite. I don’t think he’s angling for the part, or has any expectation of getting it. Also, referring to the “tropes” as he does, makes me feel that he’s probably not very interested as an actor, but just enjoys Bond as a fan who knows it’s a bit cheesy and fun.

Seriously, tho. Johannes Cabal, for our Hiddleyanna. READ THE BOOK!

  12. Sixer says:

I still want a black or brown Bond. But not Idris. Someone as gorgeous as Idris but who we don’t know well yet. LEGS, despite the legs, is too obvious and this franchise really needs not to go backwards.

    • CornyBlue says:

Rahul Kohli. Check him out. I just remembered he is British.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Who is on the horizon over there?

    • vauvert says:

What do you guys think of Adrian Lester who played the main character Danny on Hustle? Gorgeous, suave, looks fab in a suit. And he perfectly embodied that devil may care attitude. Plus he is younger (and I know Idris gets a lot of love here but sorry I don’t see it. I want a younger, hot Bond.)

That being said, I think I would enjoy Hiddles as Bond. Lots of others I would like too, but Armitage would probably be too old, Matthew Goode too pretty…. I like the guy who plays Athos in the Musketeers (Tom Burke?), but he is probably not famous enough. Matt Smith was great as the Doctor, he is young and I think he would do a great job.

      • Sixer says:

Adrian Lester is probably more about the stage. I love him. Keep an eye out for an upcoming BBC drama in which he has the lead with Sophie Okenedo.. Hang on… http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2015/undercover-casting

      • Leah says:

        @Vauvert
Adrian Lester is older than Idris. Hes almost 50.

      • T.Fanty says:

I adore Adrian Lester. I saw him in Company years and years and years ago (and he was magnificent). To me, he just seems too nice. He just always seems likable. Bond needs to have an edge.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Sixer, that show with Adrian and Sophie sounds fantastic

      • EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

I say no to Matt Smith. I like him, but James Bond should have eyebrows. I am firm on this point.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Damnit Sixer, Mr Balls is gonna take away my fake Britisher laptop if you keep pointing me toward more BBC shows.

      • Cranberry says:

If just being Hot, edgy and intense is the criteria then Idris has all these other actors beat. But if age is going to be the determining factor, then it is the franchise’s loss. Idris has broken through to the mainstream international level this year, and the man has got the looks talent and gravitas to keep the franchise successful.

    • spidey says:

Would it be better (for all of them, not just the one chosen) for a black or brown actor to start in a new franchise all of his own rather than have to stand the inevitable comparisons?

Would Idris be a bit old to start as Bond when the time comes, probably not for a few years?

      • lunchcoma says:

I think Idris probably will be too old.

I don’t think that a new franchise is a better deal for a black or brown actor, though. Part of the reason actor of color have a hart time breaking into the industry is that established parts like Bond still resonate with people, and it’s really hard for them to make space for newer characters who essentially do the same thing. Who else even comes close? Maaaaybe Jason Bourne, and the Bourne movies still tend to rely pretty heavily on actors whose names and faces are already familiar.

      • Sixer says:

I also think Idris will be too old, hence his not being my choice, much as I’d like to see him on screen as much as possible.

Well. I’m not into Bond particularly. But the franchise will continue regardless and they need to cast someone new. Since that is going to happen and franchises need to renew themselves, I would like to see a black or brown Bond. Not opposed to a woman either.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I want a relatively unknown, dark skinned Bond with an edge too. And a better script than Spectre. The series needs a reboot to get me excited about Bond again.

      • Cranberry says:

I don’t think that a new franchise is a better deal for a black or brown actor, though. Part of the reason actor of color have a hart time breaking into the industry is that established parts like Bond still resonate with people, and it’s really hard for them to make space for newer characters who essentially do the same thing.

        @lunchcoma

Yes. It’s too bad all the anti-PC people can’t understand this. But most of them are racists anyways whether they realize it or not.

  13. InvaderTak says:

Not until after the men in tights remake, hids.

  14. KTE says:

The next Bond will almost certainly be a less well-known actor than either Idris or Tom.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I agree. They’re both at a higher profile than previous Bonds. They tend to go with someone who is more of a blank slate internationally

      • Cranberry says:

Do you think that’s because well known or popular actors would have to be paid more?

    • lunchcoma says:

Yeah, that’s my guess as well.

      • Andrea says:

I am not sure if Tom Hiddleston is well known internationally. I mention his name in Canada/US and get blank looks on women’s faces.

  15. Kate says:

Haven’t we all already had this exact conversation?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes. Several times. And probably will again until they cast the next Bond.

      • Andrea says:

Yes, we get the same suggestions/deflections every single time. Just cast someone already so we can get excited or bitch about it.

  16. MexicanMonkey says:

He sounds non-committal and polite. I don’t think Hiddleston is actively campaigning for the role but with the night manager he’s being asked about it way more often.
His odds have gone up after it aired and if you spend some time on Twitter while it’s on TV you’re bound to find quite a few people taking about him as Bond.
I don’t see him taking on the franchise having just done a mini series where he plays a spy, a series which may be renewed for a second part. And he already has two franchises, Loki and Skull Island, which I also suspect was a multi movie deal.

    • spidey says:

and the twitterati aren’t the ones who choose!

    • EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

I agree. He keeps politely downplaying it, so i don’t think he’s actually interested. I’d like to see him in more diverse roles (though a stint as a Bond villain would be delicious). I’d love to see Idris get the role but agree that the Dark Tower role makes this less likely.

    • MI6 says:

“Not since Robert De Niro’s deranged autograph hunter Rupert Pupkin kidnapped Jerry Lewis’s late-night talkshow host in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy has an actor made quite such a blatant tout for work as Hiddleston’s “come and get me” plea to Bond producers in an interview with this weekend’s Sunday Times.”

…Whaaat??? Who gets “blatant tout” out of that article??
      #idiotjournos
And I used to be one. Not an idiot, however.

      • ennuiarethechampions says:

Ugh. And I just saw another headline screaming “Tom Hiddleston Admits He is Desperate To Play James Bond.” What the whaaa???

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        Where was this? That’s hilarious…..

      • lilacflowers says:

As usual, the internet is spinning a simple statement into an unrecognizable clickbait monster.

      • Cranberry says:

I have a theory. If everyone gets 15 minutes of fame maybe everyone is also an idiot for 15 minutes, at the very least.

      • lilacflowers says:

@Miss Jupitero, that’s from an article in The Guardian reviewing the odds on different actors playing Bond.

  17. Marianne says:

I feel like most Brits would be up to play Bond if asked, lol.

What about Aidan Turner? He’s gorgeous, and hes known well enough but not as famously as someone like Elba, Hiddleston or Hardy.

  18. KittyKat says:

Offic topic for a but but can someone help me about when the interview took place?
It states that was in early January and he’s just finished filming in Hawaii and Australia and would be in Vietnam next but according to photos and such he went straight from Australia via Berlin to Vietnam in February. We know he didn’t stop over in the uk because Luke had his guitar and because that airline doesn’t fly from the uk.

    • Lilacflowers says:

He did several interviews by Skype or phone.

      • lilacflowers says:

Also, the article, which I was not able to read until now, says “early January.” They had a filming break between late December and the week after the Golden Globes in early January. He was home in London for the holidays and the first week of January, which is apparently when this interview took place. He did another one from Australia by Skype.

Also, photos popping up on Twitter or Tumblr really are not a reliable way to know what someone did in the moments that whoever took the Twitter/tumblr picture was not around – which would be most of the time. And people do switch airlines.

    • NUTBALLS says:

He was home for Christmas / New Years, so he may have done it before flying to Oz.

  19. Dara says:

Nice little clip of Tom channeling Hank.
    https://twitter.com/ACMawards/status/706957920370446336

Am I reading too much into the fact that it’s the ACM Awards posting the video? Their ceremony is on April 3 in LV. ISTL opens wide on the 1st…just sayin’

    • lilacflowers says:

The ACM only seems to have one Twitter account and it is the ACM Awards one. The ACM may be wiling to prompe the film because Williams was a country music icon/founder and the family, aside from H3, have endorsed the film. Rodney Crowell is also very well respected. Or maybe there will be an appearance at the awards on the 3rd. Maybe not.

We do seem on the verge of yet another Tompocalypse what with the current British promotion for The Night Manager on-going, the British promotion for High-Rise ramping up for the release later this month; the US appearance related to the March release of ISTL, and the US promotion of TNM in April. Tom and Hugh Laurie will be doing a Times Talk together in April prior to the US broadcasts of TNM.

      • ennuiarethechampions says:

Oh, I hope he doesn’t sing at the ACMs. I think he sounds great on the studio recordings, but singing live is a different matter. It’s easy to sounds pitchy, which I think he sometimes does when live, and I’d hate for him to put in a shaky performance and negatively affect country music fans’ perception of the movie. Don’t get overconfident, Tom!

      • Dara says:

The clip is on the regular ACM Facebook page, so maybe it is a coincidence. Could be Sony has bought some tv ad time during the ceremony and a little extra promo was included in the deal – who knows. I’m with @ennui – a live performance comes with all sorts of perils. This awards show looks like quite the spectacle too, not something to be undertaken lightly.

The Times Talk is scheduled just right at the start of the Tribeca FF, so maybe Tom will stick around NYC for that too. And here we were speculating he wouldn’t have much to do after the Monkey Movie wraps. Should’ve known better.

      • lilacflowers says:

        High-Rise is showing at Tribeca.

  20. anniel says:

Aidan Turner is perfect for Bond. Soooo, sexy! He’d bring loads of females back to 007 films!

  21. Hannah says:

He’s too nice. Also with that Windsor hairline he’s gonna age out of bond to quickly.

  22. EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

New High-Rise clip at Empire Online! (Sorry, the site ate my earlier post that contained a link).

    • NUTBALLS says:

      Here it is:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV9GPmOgOl4

I wasn’t crazy about the book, but every clip/trailer makes me think this is the project in which Hiddles is gonna shine. He seems well suited (pun intended) for the role of Laing.

      • spidey says:

How come your youtube links don’t get disappeared as mine do? 😕

      • NUTBALLS says:

I don’t post the entire link the first time I save. I go back and post everything prior to “youtube” and resave.

      • spidey says:

Right, thanks, I’ll try to remember that.

      • NUTBALLS says:

For some reason, creating a hyperlink in the original post often triggers a disappearance. So post everything after “www.” then go back and add the everything before that and resave. It’s worked every time.
