Sarah Michelle Gellar goes brunette for ‘Cruel Intentions’ reboot: cute or meh?

Last month, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that she was reprising her role as the ruthless Kathryn Merteuil for NBC’s upcoming reboot of the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions. Just in case you didn’t think she was serious, Gellar shared some photos on her Instagram that confirmed her commitment to the project.

Gellar, 38, shared a photo of her newly-brunette locks (for her Cruel Intentions character) with the caption, “#brownhairdontcare (actually kind of love it!!) thank you everyone.”

If that’s not enough to get you psyched for the new series, Sarah also posted a photo of the script for the new series’ pilot with the caption, “How I am spending the 17 anniversary of the release of #cruelintentions.”

The news came out last week that Kate Levering of Drop Dead Diva was cast as Reese Witherspoon’s character, Annette. The reboot will take place 15 years after the film’s ending. (The Hollywood Reporter has more backstory on Annette, along with potential spoilers.) Other new cast additions include Nathalie Kelley (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) and Coby Bell (Burn Notice), who will play Sarah Michelle Gellar’s scheming husband. Bell and Gellar actually worked together before on an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in 1997!

So, the big question is, are you excited? There was a sequel to Cruel Intentions, believe it or not, and Amy Adams played Sarah’s part. I am not a big fan of reboots, they are always disappointing. Maybe if I come into this one with low expectations, I won’t be disappointed. I thought the original movie was kind of “meh” (sorry), and now I’m kind of into soapy series, so I might actually give this one a peek. Sarah’s hair looks fab though.

Love the dark hair!! She looks great!

  2. Hadleyb says:

I hate the brown on her, its too ashy. And its a bitch to keep up when you have greys coming in.

  3. lucy2 says:

I think she looked good in the original movie with dark hair, but this seems like too light a shade. Maybe it’s the lighting in the photo though?

    • Red32 says:

Her hair in the movie had more of a red tone than ash. I love that chestnut hair color on her. I think it suits her better than blonde.

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She looks much better as a brunette than a blonde. So many people completely change their natural color, and it rarely works.

    • Kitten says:

Agreed. I was a really light champagne blonde for most of my twenties then transitioned to a honey blonde in my early thirties to a light brown and now I’m chocolate brown (my TRUE color) and I’m obsessed with it. It just compliments my natural coloring so much better than the blonde. Looking back, I can’t believe I insisted on being blonde for so many years.

    • I Choose Me says:

Agree. Her natural hair color is brunette and that’s what suits her best.

      • Danielle says:

The brunette is a much better look for her. The blonde was too harsh, and the 2 toned hair was a hot mess.

  5. Crumpet says:

Has no one watched ‘Dangerous Liaisons’? I found ‘Cruel Intentions’ sophomoric in comparison.

    • I Choose Me says:

It was supposed to be. I love the original with Malkovich and Glenn Close but I thought that Cruel Intentions was campy fun.

  6. Woo Hoo says:

It looks fine. She’s a natural brunette anyway, so it is nice to see her get back to her roots although that color does look a little ashy instead of her natural deeper brunette hue.

  7. Dorothy#1 says:

    I miss Drop Dead Diva!!!

    • DelilahJones says:

Me too!! And Kim was one of my favourite characters. It’ll be good to see her on tv again

  8. Whitney says:

She looks really good with the darker hair.

  9. perplexed says:

She’s always looked better as a brunette. The blonde hair kind of makes her features, especially her nose, look a little weird. She looks younger with the darker hair.

  10. NeNe says:

I will not be watching this. I wish they would just leave well enough alone, and stop rebooting/remaking movies! Sheesh!!

  11. lemniskate says:

Kate Levering is almost forty. How in the world is a 37 year old going to play Reese Witherspoon’s part in this reboot?

    • DelilahJones says:

Her character will have aged. Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing her same character so the Annette character will be similar in age, making her around 40. The main character, I believe, is Annette’s teenage son.

      • lemniskate says:

well that makes a lot more sense! Silly that they’re calling it a reboot when it sounds a lot more like a sequel.

  12. amilu says:

SMG looks so beautiful in the Instagram photo!

  13. Patty says:

She’s a natural brunette anyway. Dark dark brown hair. I will admit that she can pull off the blonde though, and I guess she’s been dying her hair since season one Buffy so a lot of people thought she was a natural blonde. I actually think she looks great with red hair. I liked that silly movie she did with Sean Patrick Flannery with the magic crab or whatever…..
