Shanna Moakler on why Miss California shouldn’t be Miss USA

When you start agreeing with Shanna Moakler, is it time to take a break? Because I’m there. Shanna Moakler, wife of Travis Barker, the slut who was all over Gerard Butler, and former Miss USA has spoken out about Miss California’s anti-gay marriage stance. Her written blog statement is actually one of the most nuanced, articulate, passionate opinions I’ve read about this whole “scandal”.

First, some background. Shanna had a part in this year’s ceremony. As a former Miss USA and resident of California, Shanna was the pageant director for the Miss California competition. As such, Shanna had promoted Carrie Prejean extensively before the Miss USA pageant. Shanna and Carrie have spent time together, and Shanna says she knows and likes her, despite their difference of opinion regarding gay marriage. Shanna says unequivocally that she “will not abandon our reigning Miss California.”

However, Shanna goes on to give one of the best explanations for why Miss California lost the Miss USA crown, and why she should have lost it. Shanna writes: “[Miss USA] is a ambassador, a role model and needs to be able to show diplomacy on all issues. sadly for California THIS is where we lost the crown. Not for her answer or even her beliefs, [but] because she wasn’t able to convey compassion for ALL the people that as MISS USA she would be representing. and if YOU like it or not, gays and lesbians make up this country as well. THIS is why we have judges so they can find the RIGHT woman who obtains these qualities. The panel of judges was qualified and did their job, they represented all of us, men, woman, black, white, gay and straight.” Jesus, I think I have something in my eye. Shanna Moakler just made me believe in the honor of the Miss USA pageant.

This weekend, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, started a whirlwind of controversy by her response in the interview portion of the Miss USA pageant, when she said marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Perez Hilton had asked whether more states should allow gay marriage, and why or why not.

While news pundits and experts are busy debating and interviewing Prejean, a tried and true pageant expert, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, is also weighing in on her blog.

As the pageant director the Miss California competition, Shanna had been promoting Prejean in Las Vegas leading up to the event, and now she feels the need to clear things up from her perspective.

“Well, I just got back from a interview at CBS, and I can say after not sleeping for about 2 days and trying to sum up emotions in a 30 second interview wasn’t easy, I wanted to take to my blog so I can put into words my thoughts and feelings, I find writing is best for me anyway,” she writes on her official blog.

“First, I want to be clear on the fact, that I have NOT and will not abandon our reigning Miss California, thou I have a STRONG difference of opinion, I do NOT hate her, nor do I have any issue with her stating her opinion, she is not the first conservative christian titleholder to be in pageants. I agree with the majority that this IS what makes our country great and that is of course freedom of speech. She was asked a questioned and she answered it.”

“But I want to explain to the masses, what the TITLE of Miss USA stands for to me, and being a former Miss USA, I feel I have a pretty good sense of it. Miss USA travels the world and she competes at the Miss UNIVERSE pageant as a representation of her country. She is a ambassador, a role model and needs to be able to show diplomacy on all issues. sadly for California THIS is where we lost the crown. Not for her answer or even her beliefs, because again, sadly IN California her beliefs at this point in time are the majority. But she lost the crown because she wasn’t able to convey compassion for ALL the people that as MISS USA she would be representing. and if YOU like it or not, gays and lesbians make up this country as well. THIS is why we have judges so they can find the RIGHT woman who obtains these qualities. they are crucial in my eyes when holding a honor and title as big as being Miss USA. The panel of judges was qualified and did their job, they represented all of us, men, woman, black, white, gay and straight.”

“I think Miss California’s willingness to stand by her convictions and (in my eyes, simply made the question more personal then it needed to be), has in essence made a great positive impact cause it has brought a issue important to me to the for front of the media and that is civil rights. I have blogged and petitioned for gay rights in the past and if anything positive can come out of this, It’s that it has people talking and we need to have people talking and we need MANY conversations on this topic to take place, especially in the state of California and with Prop 8.”

“I do however want to apologize to the men and woman who have continually supported the Miss California USA pageant. I know some were hurt and felt a sense of betrayal, but I thank you for your understanding, communication, love and continued support. shannaxoxo Health, Wealth and equality for all.”

From OK! Magazine

Shanna is making some of the same points that Perez Hilton made on Tuesday’s Today show, basically saying that there was a way to answer the question without personalizing it, and without coming across as inarticulate and a little sanctimonious.

When I first heard about the “controversy” Monday morning, my first thought was “she said that in front of all of those gay men?” My second thought was “this will last maybe three days tops”. So, here’s hoping that sometime today or tomorrow we collectively figure out that we were getting pissed at Miss California, a ditzy blond who will most likely end up a daytime co-anchor at Fox News.

If she had said she supported gay marriage-no matter how she had worded it she may have fared better. She wouldn’t have had to have been ‘diplomatic’ if she’d just said what everyone wanted her to…

  2. JustSaying says:

And just who is Shannon Moakler? I wish celebrities ( I use the word loosely!) would just perform and keep their opinions to themselves…

  3. Mis says:

Have we forgotten that Miss California DID NOT win? Miss North Carolina did! Why is the runnerup getting more press!

  4. j. ferber says:

Good for Shanna. She hit it spot on. But would it kill her to use the proper article with a noun?

  5. crab says:

@JustSaying, Shanna is a former Miss USA and she was performing her job!

  6. blackberry says:

She (Prejean) answered honestly and ethically. She didn’t denigrate anyone, she simply answered the question she was asked. Shanna tries too hard, over and over, to be a hero.

  7. Revlon10 says:

Why is a gay man judging a women pageant?

  8. bros says:

revlon10, what a dumb question. this dumb tramp needs to shut her pie hole, accept second place, and go back to her christian college where all the rest of the people think like her tiny pea brain. she is clearly proving she has no class or tact by gobbling up the spotlight memememememe! for the last 3 days and she didnt even win! anyone who watched that pageant knew she wasnt going to win. north carolina, as far as beauty queens go, was a much better contestant. please shut up already and go back to “your country and your family”

  9. Ned says:

A contestant in an outdated “beauty” contest, gave the same answer as Obama (with the same sentences he used).

Mario (Perez Hilton) is to blame for this.
He asked her opinion on a very polarizing matter.
Had she evaded, he would have said she didn’t really answer the question, had she said she supports gay marriage it would still be a controversy, since her own state does not support that, and she is supposed to represent her own state.

IF a model is now an ambassador that represents the face of America, that what is the president of the United States of America?

Why are they going after a young model who is not running for office, but Obama gets a pass.

I don’t agree with her, but she did exactly what they asked her to do. That question should not have been asked, it’s a beauty pageant.

  10. Ned says:

Oh and Kaiser, how is it “inclusive” and politically correct to call a model a “ditzy blond”, just because you happen to disagree with her.

Is the color of her hair, now an indication of her intelligence?

  11. gg says:

Because Perez has made such a big stink out of this is the only reason she is now appearing on talk shows. I’m sure she’s glad as hell she didn’t win, because now Perez has made her a career just by being his usual aho self.

Blame Perez if you don’t like that.

For the record I support gay rights but people with any integrity are not going to lie in her situation. Everyone would have kn9own.

  12. Kaiser says:

You’re right, Ned. I apologize. Most of those Fox News girls didn’t start out blonde. ZOMG the carpets don’t match the drapes.

  13. bros says:

yes because kaiser, we all know ned is the defender of women’s integrity and crusader against sweeping generalizations. when he is taking a break from calling all women gold diggers, sluts, dimwits, insane, hating on all things jolie, and a whole host of other denigrations, he would appreciate you not making stereotypical comments about womens hair color and its purported correlation to intelligence.

  14. Kaiser says:

Exactly, Bros… my rule is to only make fun of things that people can change… like the “choice” of hair color, not the “choice” of being gay.

  15. Annie says:

    LOL.

I can always expect a good laugh from the comments.

Kaiser! Don’t you know that they clearly choose to be gay. I mean, don’t you wake up sometimes and think “Man, you know what? I would love to be treated as a second-class citizen today. I’d love to get bullied and beat up and be stripped of rights. That sounds like great fun.”

  16. judy says:

It is too bad that they do not teach kids in school about genitics or evolution. Gays are born not made and the poster is right they do not wake up one day and say..”gee I think I will be gay now so people will abuse me and make fun of me and take away my rights even tho I pay the same taxes as they do” Why are our kids not taught about reality in school ? This way there woulsnt be so many uneducated people in this world especially those that look at a book that was written hundreds of years ago ,written by man and translated over 900 times lol They belive some book before they will believe what science has proven..

  17. Terrian says:

Miss California was asked whether or not she believed that all 50 United States should make gay marriage legal, NOT if she believed gay marriage was right.

That is where she went wrong. She made the question personal.

  18. Danielle says:

People are born gay? When I was little I was more worried about my toys and not my sexuality. Who would’ve thought that I was just “born” straight? Maybe I should’ve thought of that when I went through my interesting bi-sexual phase. Everyone always has a choice. That’s what makes America so beautiful. It’s not against the law here like it was in Ireland years ago. So at least we have something over other countries. I take no stance on this, not because I’m afraid of what people will think of what I think, but because I think it isn’t worth half the drama it provides. Such utter nonsense that this girl is getting attacked for being honest. She holds no power so why is she being treated as such a threat?

    ~Dani

P.S. I’m taking a quote from The Notebook. “Science only goes so far and then comes God.”

  19. Badkrma says:

#7 comment is right on. But just one thing boggles me, why is giving your opinion such a taboo. We allow gays and lesbian to tell us how they feel, why not other people with other views. Why are they so sensitive to hearing an opposite opinion?

  20. cherryblossom says:

Ugh….who cares you nasty little attention whore?

Go back to the premordial ooze from wence you came!

    I hate that woman (Moakler).

But can we stop talking about this? Really? Who cares? I’m gay and I’m getting sick of this shit.

  21. Hieronymus Grexx says:

Shut up Shanna ! You can’t even keep one boyfriend for longer than 6 weeks, so WTF do you known about real relationships?

  22. heh-heh says:

DOES ANYONE THINK it’s odd that Shanna has sworn an oath of loyalty to a beauty queen???

” I have NOT and will not abandon our reigning Miss California”

It’s not like you’re being asked to commit treason or something…
