Have Casey Affleck & Summer Phoenix split after a decade of marriage?

wenn20167276

For decades, the Affleck family has been close to the Phoenix family. I think the start of it was probably just the fact that Joaquin Phoenix was auditioning for the same roles as Casey and Ben Affleck back in the 1990s. Joaquin and Casey worked together in 1995’s To Die For, and they’ve been friends ever since. Back then, Joaquin was dating Liv Tyler (God, I remember those days!!!). At some point, Joaquin introduced his BFF Casey to his sister Summer, and Casey became involved with Summer. Summer and Casey got married in 2006 after being together for six years. They have two kids together. And now it’s over?

In Touch magazine has learned exclusively that Casey Affleck has split from his wife of nearly 10 years, Summer Phoenix.

“Casey and Summer have amicably separated,” Casey’s rep confirms to In Touch. “They remain very close friends.”

Summer, 37, and Casey, 40, have been separated for several months but are co-parenting their sons, Indiana, 11, and Atticus, 8.

“She was having a lot of trust issues,” an insider tells In Touch. “They went to couples counseling but they just couldn’t recover.”

[From In Touch Weekly]

Does anyone remember Joaquin’s I’m Not Here phase, which he later said was some high-minded performance art about the nature of celebrity? Casey directed that documentary, and it was said that Casey and Joaquin were both having, like, complete breakdowns as they shot that. While I think Casey is extremely talented, I also sort of wonder if he’s a good dude? Like, he seems like he might have issues. And I wouldn’t blame Summer at all if she had “trust issues.”

They have been together for almost have their life. This is sad. Can In Touch be trusted.

  2. Jegede says:

    Dunno if this is true.
But I thought there were known stories of a very married Casey cheating on Summer.

And I remember a sexual harassment case(s) brought against Casey ( by 2 females. Co-workers?), eventually settled out of court.

    • Coco says:

Something seemed off about him during the recent Colbert interview. I remember wondering if there was anything going on in his personal life, like a divorce, because he seemed distracted and rude.

      • Alexis says:

OMG I totally forgot about that!! I went and watched the Youtube video, and he’s not wearing his wedding ring and cleeeearly drunk.

    • Liv says:

I remember that there were rumours about his infidelity too. Seems to run in the family. She’s so beautiful, I hope she finds a nice guy.

  3. Orlanda says:

I wonder if this is one of the March divorces that Laura Wasser was talking about?

  4. jinni says:

Remember the lawsuit that two female crew members of the documentary had against him that was quietly handled? So, yeah, something is not right about this guy.

Ben may come off skeevy, but he still has a charm about him while Casey always seemed creepy to me.

    • FingerBinger says:

      Both Afflecks are creepy.

      • jinni says:

They are definitely both suspect as hell, but I can still sort of see how some can find Ben palatable, while Casey has nothing to dilute the creepiness.

      • Hannah says:

I don’t know who is more suspect but imi Casey is actually the more talented one. Very good actor that one.

    • doofus says:

agree…Ben may be an overgrown frat boy, but he does come off as nice and charming…Casey always gave me creepy frat boy vibes.

Like, Ben as frat-boy would be the one who cheated a lot on his GF but felt remorse, and Casey would be the date-rapist frat boy.

(NOTE: I am not saying Casey Affleck is a rapist, just agreeing on the creepy vibe.)

      • Alexis says:

I always thought that Ben was more creepy than Casey…Casey always seemed more loveable, while Ben was more of a schemer.

  5. Bonnie says:

He just doesn’t seem like a nice person. He never really gives off that “nice guy” side. Maybe he doesn’t like interviews, and just is an introvert. But he never really screamed, “HAPPY” to me.

    • Jayna says:

He agonizes over everything to do with his career and taking roles. It’s why he never got farther than he did. He cripples himself. Matt once told a story of literally being on the phone with Casey for two hours about some role or something or his career. After he gets off the phone, he talked to Ben and told him. Ben said he had spent hours on the phone with him also that day trying to convince him of the same stuff Matt did.

  6. Bridget says:

    “Trust issues”?

That “documentary” was ridiculous. While they were filming it EVERYONE kept saying “this is a joke, right?” and when it came out Phoenix and Affleck kept acting like it was some huge shock that they pulled it off.

    • doofus says:

yeah, I remember how the public was like “this has to be a hoax” and then, after the film was out for a while and they announced it was an “art performance piece”, they were like “we fooled you all – hahahahahaha!”

      uh, no…you didn’t.

  7. Candy says:

Both Affleck men are so unappealing to me.
    The epitome of douche

  8. Lala says:

    I’m skeptical.

  9. Mia4s says:

Well his cheating stories have reached “where there’s smoke there’s fire levels” so I wouldn’t be stunned. Good for her if she kicks him to the curb.

Like Big Brother, like Little Brother? Gee Mom must be so proud. 🙄

    • Liv says:

Yep, she definitely did a good job raising them.

      • Merritt says:

Their absent alcoholic dad didn’t exactly help the situation.

      • Mia4s says:

Not what I meant at all. I imagine she did her best. Men who cheat on their wives (not to mention the mothers of their children) are an insult to their own mothers.

    • Dani says:

I don’t think it’s fair to blame their mother. Sure, she raised them, but after a certain age you raise yourself and you decide whether or not to do the things you do, and for that, only you are responsible. Condemning their mother for their wandering dongs isn’t fair play.

  10. DarkSparkle says:

I’ll always have a soft spot for Casey, I loved him so much in 200 Cigarettes as the sweet, dopey punk-rocker awkwardly trying to court Christina Ricci.

  11. Izzy says:

The Wandering Affleck Dong Syndrome strikes again!

  12. Rhiley says:

Even his brother, bra, Ben Affleck, worries about Casey. He made a snide remark once, he was the reason he (Ben) was prematurely gray.

  13. Jayna says:

He’s the norm of people getting together young and it doesn’t last forever. tHow many have? Angelina Jolie didn’t find happiness and stability until her third marriage. Tom Hanks, his second marriage. Scarlett Johanssen, her second marriage. Ryan Reynolds, his second marriage. On and on. How many actors/actresses who married or settled down in their early to mid twenties lasted? Natasha Richardson, her second marriage. Liam Neeson said most men don’t have the maturity to be good husbands when marrying young and to wait until mid 30s at least, or for him 40 ws the right age. He got a lot of selfishness out of the way.. He said women really mature by age 28 and have their shit together much earlier than men.

In Hollywoodland, it surprise would be if they lasted, not that they broke up.

  14. Finis says:

I’m interpreting Summer’s “trust issues” to mean he screwed around, got caught, and she can’t forgive and forget.
If this is the case, I can’t blame her for having trust issues.

    • Naya says:

I just remembered that Summer was raised in that child abusing cult, “children of God” or something. I hate to think that she has also now spent all of her adulthood with a cheating dbag affleck. I hope her life is nothing but rainbows from now on.

      • Charlotte says:

Summer wasn’t raised in the Church of God. She was born AFTER the family left South America. She was born in Winter Park, Florida. So much misinformation abounds about that and gets repeated.

      • mp says:

if you listen to the Fresh Air interview with Joaquin, it’s a really interesting look at their family.

  15. Zaytabogota says:

He looked out of it on the Colbert show recently, he wasn’t able to process the questions and react appropriately. Drugged up to his eyeballs. Very sad, he’s a great actor, he needs to get it together before he throws his career away. I remember reading that he’d lost all his money on that awful Joaquain documentary and had turned down some really good roles to do it. That bad risk taking would put a lot of pressure on a marriage.

  16. Alexis says:

Everytime I read about an Affleck I think about Matt Damon saying how big Ben Affleck’s “member” was….and I can’t help but wonder if that runs in the family…

  17. Lemon Tea says:

I thought he was a little off but not a big deal on the Colbert show. I think a lot of these shows do a pre-show theme thing to figure out not-so-controversial stuff they can say to make it go viral. If you watch the video, they were pretty much just teasing each other. I couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. Casey Affleck seems like a neurotic type. He was okay for most of Triple 9 (lots of laughably gratuitous shots of T and A, by the way. Is John Hillcoat trying to become Michael Mann?) but didn’t come through with the emotional rage that I thought his role needed in the last 20 minutes.

  18. elle says:

I didn’t even know he was married and just realized that I had never considered his romantic life until this very moment. Curses!

  19. taxi says:

Don’t you think the Phoenix family has some inherent issues too? Joaquin doesn’t appear to be very well-adjusted, River was a talented mess, and whatever led the parents into their cult may well have left emotional quirks which remain in the family dynamics for decades.

    • Magpie says:

River was really heavy into drugs and joaquin is too I think. There was that blind where his rehab wasn’t for booze but much, much harder substances. I don’t know about the girls, but I think the boys had/have deep emotional and substance issues.

      • Lyssa says:

I think I read an interview where Joaquin talked about being the one that wanted to go to the Viper Room that night. River really didn’t want to go according to what I read. If that was correct then I think a lot of Joaquin’s issues are due to guilt. It would make sense that he would use harder substances in order to dull the pain/guilt.

  20. CharlotteCharlotte says:

The wording of that pisses me off. They’re splitting because of HER. Because SHE has trust issues. Yep, all her fault. Totally. Eurgh!!!

  21. Magpie says:

I think casey worshiped joaquin and married his sister to be family. He was on the cusp of getting a-list roles and then they made that stupid movie which hurt casey more than joaquin imo. Lots of cheating rumors, almost rapey, so of course summer has “trust issues”. Not surprised by this split, was waiting for it for a while.
