First trailer for ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’: are you feeling this or not so much?

Last fall, we were getting some lovely photos from the London set of Bridget Jones’ Baby, the third film from the Bridget Jones franchise. The first Bridget Jones film, Bridget Jones’s Diary, is an absolute classic of the romantic-comedy genre, and to me, Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy is still everything that a flawed romantic hero should be. The second film was not very good though, and many wondered if there would really be interest in making a third film. The project went through many variations and it ended up gestating quietly for years before they ever got around to making it.

We already knew that the “plot” of this film would involve paternity drama – as in, Bridget doesn’t know who fathered her child, Mark Darcy or Patrick Dempsey’s character. I questioned that whole idea, because I honestly think that’s pretty juvenile for a heroine like Bridget. But now that the first trailer has dropped, I’m sort of reconsidering. While Dempsey does absolutely nothing for me – in fact, I tend to believe he’s a charisma vacuum – Colin Firth is absolutely selling this. And Renee is too, a bit. Here’s the trailer. You’ll come for the Mark Darcy and you’ll stay for the Emma Thompson cameo.

An issue I have with this incarnation of Bridget is that Renee really, really did not even try to put on any weight. In the pre-pregnancy scenes, it just looks like normal, everyday Renee Zellweger… not Bridget. That sort of sucks. But as soon as Mark and Bridget ordered their wine and Scotch, I knew I would be seeing this movie. I guess I’ll take mini-naps through the Dempsey parts.

    I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!

    • JenYfromTheBlok says:

I agree it might be funny, but for the love of God does she need to be a “skinny” pregger lady? I’d imagine the Real Bridget Jones would get some face and theighs on during her time!

Me too, I’m a slave to these movies and SO RELIEVED they didn’t go with the plot of the third book, which I was dying to read and stopped about 50 pages in because sad, boring, grey, failed-wistful, privileged, and lame. Bridget is a foolish woman, she’s a ditz, she’s many un-great things, but she’s never been a privileged upper crusty smug type, and she was in that book.

  3. Cecilie says:

I’ll be watching this for the Emma cameo.

  4. Mia V. says:

Bridget Jones isn’t looking like Bridget Jones.

    • Shambles says:

Thank you. I just do not understand how anyone could think she looks even remotely like her original self. She’s not believable as a character she played 15 years ago because she had a completely different face then.

  5. islandwalker says:

I used to think Renee was a very good actress (except that hideous portrayal in Cold Mountain.) I wish she would do more but this franchise should have died a while back. Move on.

    • Josefina says:

I agree. Renee is for me one of the prime examples of an Oscar curse – her career was going perfectly fine until she won. From that point on her career just took a nose dive (or did something happen in her life that I don’t know of?).

  6. Rista says:

Bridget Jones looks menopausal and well past the ability to give birth…

  7. Nikki says:

I literally didn’t recognize Renee Zelweiger, so… But have to say: Colin is my crush. I will watch it, heck yes!

  8. Jenns says:

I’m conflicted. I love the first movie so much. And while the second movie wasn’t great, I still watch it because I love the chemistry between Colin and Renee.

This trailer doesn’t look that great. But I’m still in.

  9. Michelle says:

Okay, obviously this is nothing like the book. But…this better be Mark’s baby because Mark is the only reason why I would go see this!

    • SloaneY says:

It’s more like the end of the column, but in that it was either Mark or Daniel Cleaver’s. That one had kind of a dark bent. It ended up being Daniel’s I believe, but at one point Mark was willing to be the father no matter the paternity but she turned that down?
I’m hoping maybe this is that story but with the better ending of Mark as father.

      • Pri says:

I thought that Mark and Bridget were engaged at the end of the second film?

      • K2 says:

Bridget Jones was originally written as a column in a British newspaper, The Independent. That was edited and turned into the book, and that in turn became the movies. But the column was first, and quite a bit darker and more savagely ironic in some ways, from memory (was written 20 years ago now, so may not be reliable!)

Well, the makeup and lighting people did an excellent job of making Renee look much younger and more like her pre-surgery face than in real life. Yeah, it would have been great if Renee had put on at least 15 pounds to look more like the original Bridget, but I can buy that Bridget lost weight after taking up spinning. I’ll see this movie. I loved the first Bridget Jones and even watched the second film. Renee is great as Bridget and of course there is Colin and the entire original cast (Bridget’s parents and friends) who are equally wonderful. I wish someone other than Dempsey was cast as Bridget’s love interest, but I can live with that.

    • Scal says:

Yea, at least they make it point to explain the weight loss and make it part of the story instead of just having it happen with no explanation.

    • holly hobby says:

Yes she looks very close to what she used to look like pre eye surgery. So kudos to the make up artists. I did chuckle at some parts of the video. I won’t go to the theatre to watch this but I will rent the dvd,

  11. The New Classic says:

The part with Emma Thompson made me giggle. I might go see this even though I’ve never seen the other two movies.

  12. SloaneY says:

    I absolutely adore Bridget’s mother.

  13. EscapedConvent says:

I’m confuzzled. Didn’t we hear that Mark Darcy was going to die in this movie? But in this trailer, they’re divorced? Honestly, I’m not sure i want to see this, and I love the Bridget movies. I thought that the Mark Darcy relationship was the best part of them. I’m disappointed.

    • SloaneY says:

See my message above. It explains it.

    • Tifygodess24 says:

Yeah I heard the same thing and that’s probably the biggest reason I won’t watch this movie. I’m not a fan of plots that kill off major characters, especially beloved ones. I watch a movie to escape, laugh and have fun-I’ll save the sad stuff for real life. I really loved the first movie, I actually enjoyed the second as well, and this trailer looks good but I’ll have to wait and hear what direction they took it.

  14. Gabrielle says:

i thought this was gonna be dumb but it looks awesome!

  15. TeamAwesome says:

Dang it….. I would pay to watch Emma Thompson and Colin Firth read a phone book.
I read the original columns, first two books numerous times, love the first movie.
But those silver threads in Firth/Darcy’s hair? Le. Sigh.

  16. Jess says:

I’m torn, excited to see Colin in this role again, but angry that they broke up…again! They probably should’ve left it with happily ever after and not done this movie, but I’ll go see it of course.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, that wasn’t supposed to happen!

    • Lyssa says:

Yes! Surely there was some other plot line than breaking up AGAIN or killing Darcy off! Maybe Bridget struggling with motherhood, marriage, work, and single friends.

  17. Lucy says:

Oh my God?????? Just one thing: say what you will about how she looks, but she still got it. The mannerisms, the accent…nothing has changed!

  18. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

My clip isn’t there for some reason, but I’ll probably see it and probably be disappointed. I loved the first movie.

  19. Ashley says:

    I love it,so excited!!!

  20. ShinyGrenade says:

Why no Daniel Clever? In the articles published in the Indépendant, the dad was Daniel.

  21. tacos and tv says:

I chuckled a bit. That mom is always so funny. I may go see it. I just loved Darcy’s line from the original, “I like you, just as you are.” soooooooo schweeet. and then when they kiss at the end in the snow. Ahhhhhh

  22. Amanda G says:

The first movie was brilliant… The 2nd movie was….okay…it had some good moments (water fountain fight). This movie…I don’t know…I would like to think Colin Firth wouldn’t sign on if it was awful. I don’t like that they are messing with Bridget and Mark’s happily-ever-after. Plus, Bridget is supposed to be plump, not fit. I’m sure I will see it, but it better be Mark’s baby!

  23. Cc says:

God, I hate love triangles so much.

    • Goodnight says:

Me too. Especially baby daddy ones.

I don’t get rom-coms, I really don’t. I’m the world’s least romantic person, they go totally over my head. I just really wanted to see how what people here thought about the movies.

  24. Reece says:

I’m in for the Firth and Thompson factor.

  25. Rae says:

    Can not wait!!!

  26. Ari says:

Is this SUPPOSED to be 15 years later because none of these folks can go back in time although I love me Colin lol

  27. NaturalHerbs says:

Yuck. I was so excited to hear there would be a new Bridget Jones, until I saw the plot.

I don’t find anything funny about getting knocked up and not having a clue who the father is. I’ll wait til it is on Netflix.
