Matthew McConaughey to continue to make Lincoln ads ‘for a few more years’

2016 New York Auto Show - Lincoln Press Conference

Matthew McConaughey, no stranger to being labeled as slightly eccentric, announced he plans on continuing his relationship with car manufacturer Lincoln for at least a few more years. There are probably lots of wacky commercials to come. The 46-year-old actor was a surprise guest at the New York International Auto Show yesterday, introducing the new incarnation of Lincoln’s best known vehicle, the Navigator. Of course, Matthew brought his lovely wife, Camila Alves, to the Big Apple with him. Refreshingly, they were dressed just like anyone else trying to be comfortable for a flight.

Matthew, who has starred in a series of ads for the car company since 2014 (in his latest he debates whether to go for tacos, Thai or sushi with his BBQ loving dogs), said that he was “happy to be part of Lincoln’s growth.” He added “Going forward, it looks like we are going to continue that relationship for a few more years.” I can only hope that means more awesome ad parodies, like the ones Jim Carrey did on an episode of Saturday Night Live back in 2014.

I am not a fan of SUVs and this one is certainly not changing my opinion. Mind you, my little Camaro has been hit twice in the past two years by SUVs, so there may be an extra personal bias here. The gull wing doors make the Back to the Future geek in me happy but, as is the case in “concept cars” like the one Matthew presented, won’t be a feature in the actual production vehicle which will be available next year. So, without those doors, does anyone else think this new Navigator looks a little bit like a hearse?

Does he still need to add on a bit more weight to look like his pre Dallas Buyers Club hotness?

  2. Kate says:

I change the channel when these commercials come on. They’re so weird and melodramatic, not in a good way, either.

    • Tate says:

      Same here. They are annoying.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yep. They seem really long, too.

    • V4Real says:

At least he’s pitching for cars as oppose to Katherine Heigl’s shitty, kitty litter commercial. Boy how the mighty has fallen.

      • Kate says:

Yes the difference is that Katherine Heigl is aware of how the mighty have fallen. Matthew thinks his car commercials are Oscar worthy!

    • QQ says:

I have to too before my bf understands what’s happening and starts doing his ” Alright alright alright” *eyerolls*

    • pinetree13 says:

Those commercials are so painfully cheesy and UN-self-aware that they give me second hand embarrassment. I have to change the channel or they make me cringe every time.

  3. islandwalker says:

    Those ads are so creepy.

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

My husband has an SUV because we have a small boat that we trailer to and fro. It’s a diesel and it gets 28 miles to the gallon, it’s really comfortable and all that, but I hate it and I’m embarrassed to own it.

Also, I don’t like MM or these stupid commercials.

Sorry. We are babysitting a friend’s very sweet dog and she kept me up all night. More coffee, please.

    • Kitten says:

At the risk of offending someone I have to say that it irritates the f*ck out of me that so many people who live in Boston have SUVs. So freaking unnecessary. If you live in Vermont, NH, or even the ‘burbs ok maybe but there is ZERO reason to have an SUV in the city. It’s especially irritating in my neighborhood where street parking spots are much sought-after and many streets are narrow one-way roads. SUVs just take up too much damn room and obstruct views making driving more difficult. (get off my lawn!)

That being said I have a compact SUV..lol..wait hear me out, guys!
It’s a 15 year old Rav4 hand-me-down and it’s really small and easy to park. It’s not a real SUV.

Also, MM threads make me really miss Kiddo.

      • V4Real says:

When I used to live in Manhattan I never wanted a car, it’s the city. Throw a rock in any direction and you will hit a means of transportation. I agree SUV’s seems to be a bit too big for people living in the city but I can understand if you don’t live in the city but drive to work as oppose to public transportation.

Now that I live in the suburbs which is only about 20 minutes outside of the city I drive an SUV. And it’s a RAV4. LOL.. But outside the city limits makes sense. Plus I do a bit of traveling to NH and MA with friends and the drive is a bit more comfortable than a car. At least for me.

And in your defense Rav4’s are midsize SUV’s unlike a Suburban or a Navigator.

        BTW where is Kiddo?

      • Lilacflowers says:

SUVs in Boston drive me insane. I mean, seriously? Where do they think they’re going to put those things? And they complain about lack of parking. TAKR THE T!! I drive a Bug

      • lurkingweirdo says:

As a serial reader for nearly 10 years, I miss Kiddo, too. Glad you’re still here, Kitten. Love the humor here.

    • Kate says:

I have a small SUV because my greyhound isn’t comfortable in the backseat of a car. There. I said it. I bought my car for my dog.

  5. Jayna says:

I loved the ads. He has been a great thing for Lincoln. But I’m not sure how effective they would be going forward They were different and unique at the time when they first came out.

  6. Astrid says:

He has lost his hotness but he seems like a nice guy with his family.

  7. Qzie says:

We were randomly assigned a Navigator when we were renting a car during vacay last week, and as we rounded the corner and I saw the big huge black hulking thing…I said…omg, they gave us a hearse to drive! Yuck! No! (Seriously, at first glance I really did think it was a hearse–so funny you said that.)

And my husband said, calm down–it’s one of those Matthew McConaughey cars. And I said, Oh it’s a Lincoln.

So, there you go. The branding campaign is working.

  8. lilacflowers says:

Don’t care about the cars but I do like the BBQ-loving dogs.

His face has never recovered from that weight loss for DBC.

    • Kitten says:

Is it weight loss though or excessive sun exposure?
He’s always been the type of guy who’s tan all year long and that kind of thing usually catches up with you.

      Maybe it’s both…

      • lilacflowers says:

Maybe both. The area around his mouth just seems to have sunken in. The guy never really did anything for me but we met him at Fenway Park a few years ago (pre-DBC) and he was really friendly and nice to people. We were in the private box area and he was going from box to box and signing autographs and taking pictures with people. He was a really, really good looking man.

      • Kitten says:

Awwww I’m one of like, four people around here who really like MM so your story warms my cold black heart.

      • V4Real says:

I’m with you. I love MM.

He’s not pretty boy handsome but he has a unique facial structure that makes him handsome in my eyes.

And anyone who loves to play the bongos naked while they smoke pot is ok in my book.

  9. Sarah01 says:

That’s the only thing I think of is that his hotness has not come back. Like he looks sick and a lot older. Be beautiful again.

  10. Loo says:

I truly believe that these silly commercials will hurt his chances of getting another Oscar nomination. There is nothing wrong with doing ads but these are silly and embarrassing ads.

    • V4Real says:

No more embarrassing than Brad Pitt’s Chanel commercial. 🙂

    • Original T.C. says:

Assuming he will work for another one. I can see him just coasting the rest of his days with that one. It’s the ‘make more money’ phase of his career I think. Who shows up for car commercial week?
Just like I don’t see DiCapio working for a second. IMO, it’s European actors (with the exception of a handful of serious Americans) who continue pushing themselves after an Oscar win.

  11. jsilly4e says:

I really hope the Oscar was worth it because it seriously changed his looks. And not for the better. He had lost all of his cute and it’s not just age. I mean why all this drastic weight gain and weight loss for movies? Isn’t it acting? I can suspend belief if it means the health and safety of the actors (although I know most can’t like for example Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, etc. etc.). I understand gaining muscle for a part but not losing weight and/or gaining it drastically. He will never look the same.

And as for those commercials, if I can’t forward them I usually laugh and cringe. They’re bad.

ETA: he was so beautiful in A Time to Kill, The Wedding Planner, the Kate Hudson rom-com and Lincoln Lawyer.

  12. Harryg says:

He looks creepy in those ads! Creepy!

  13. Lucy says:

I don’t really care about the ads as I’m not from the USA, but I do have to say MM has really gown on me during the past few years. He seems nice, and he’s also very funny and talented.

  14. wolfie88 says:

They can keep those ANNOYING ads running…but stop (change) the Most Interesting Guy in the world ads?!?! Oh and the one with the mini Giraffe and the Russian guy!

    • Samihami says:

      Opulence! I has it!

(actually the Russian guy is Irish…Timothy V Murphy. He did several episodes of NCIS LA, also playing a Russian)

ETA: I really, really want a mini giraffe

  15. HowdyThere says:

OMG I thought this meant Lincoln like President Lincoln… I figured he had done a movie but couldn’t figure out why he’d do commercials for it for another few years…. was it stuck in post-production? He really kind of even LOOKS like Lincoln in that photo – you have to admit! Just darken the hair and throw on a top hot! C’mon!

  16. bondbabe says:

His looks have definitely changed and not just because of age; perhaps is hairline is receding more.

My favorite parody of MM’s Lincoln commercials is Ellen DeGeneres’ spoof: https://youtu.be/K69chHMtrs4

    Cracks me up!

  17. me says:

I hate those ads. They always seem like an SNL skit !

  18. Kit katty says:

He has aged a lot since his weight loss/gain. He looks like crap.

  19. Kit katty says:

He has aged a lot since his weight loss/gain. He looks like crap. BUT he’s a man, he’ll continue to get great roles and great pay (eye roll)

  20. Ellis says:

I would think Lincoln would prefer to have an actor represent them that moves his mouth when he speaks, and enunciates clearly. He is just as bad on the big screen now too. I don’t mind the commercials, I think the filming presents the brand well, but if I want to know what McConaughey is saying, I’ll need to activate subtitles. Like I did for Interstellar.

  21. TotallyBiased says:

No. It looks a LOT like a hearse.
