Jennifer Aniston refuses to throw out her ’90s clothes: ‘I loved the ’90s’

FFN_RIJ_CRITICS_CHOICE_SET1_011716_51949600

I don’t know if this is true, but I have a theory that Jennifer Aniston pissed off Anna Wintour back in 2008. That was the last time Aniston ever covered Vogue, and when that interview came out (it was the December 2008 issue), it was a total sh-tstorm. It’s totally worth it to go back and read that piece by the way. That was the “Angelina is uncool” thing, and Aniston got a lot of flak and she tried to throw Vogue under the bus (“Vogue is uncool”) for the way they covered her words. She hasn’t been on an American Vogue cover since. And while she doesn’t cover Vogue this time around, Vogue did do a new interview with her. So maybe Wintour has thawed a little bit. Unfortunately, Aniston isn’t talking to Vogue about a new film, which is probably why this isn’t a cover. She’s just talking about hair and fashion. Sigh…

How her thoughts on beauty have changed over the years: “Emotionally and mentally, I would say it’s just about loving yourself and loving what you’ve been given—to really appreciate it and take care of it. Because this is the only body we’re given, we need to be really good and mindful of what we eat and how we take care of our skin—getting a good night’s sleep is extremely important, as is hydrating with water, water, water. It’s so important to getting that extra glow.”

Bad trends: “Sometimes you learn the hard way. Sometimes what’s in fashion isn’t always your best friend. There was a phase in the ’80s where I don’t think anyone was sporting good hair and makeup. The amount of makeup I piled onto my skin and the wonderful hair colors and cuts that my hair went through—I don’t look back fondly on some of those choices. But I do laugh at them!”

Her regrets from the ‘80s: “The entire decade! I would have to say, there was a period where I cut my hair really, really short. It was long on top, short on the sides. I think right above the ears—about an inch above—I shaved my head, and that was kind of a really bad look. It was like a faux kind of chicken sh-t mohawk.”

The ‘90s are coming back: “The ’90s are coming back!? Why are they coming back, that’s mean. I’m just kidding. That’s really good because I have certain things I have yet to throw away from my days on Friends. My red squared-toe loafers might actually be making a comeback, that’s awesome. See, it’s coming back—I knew it. I also have those nice high-waisted jeans. I’m so glad I didn’t throw any of those out. I loved the ’90s.”

What lessons she’s applied over the years: “I think over the years, everything’s just continued to get simpler. Less is more, less makeup, less fuss, and just more natural, which I kind of prefer. My skin-care treatment is very simple. I’ve found that anytime I try to do some kind of fancy hair or makeup routine or skin-care routine, it gets more complicated. I love simple Aveeno products—they just came out with a new Absolutely Ageless night time cream and a new night time serum, which are wonderful. It’s important to find something that’s simple and affordable—and easy.”

[From Vogue]

Like Aniston, I would love it if the ‘90s really came back, and no, I’m not talking about Miley Cyrus wearing a flannel shirt. You youngsters don’t even know how awesome the ‘90s were. Flannel, grunge, slips-as-outerwear, Manic Panic hair, great music, music festivals that were actually for everybody (and not just rich kids), really simple makeup and hair, occasional goth styles, the rise of independent film, unconventional leading ladies and leading men, and the biggest f—king concern we had was, like, Bill Clinton getting a beej. Of course, it’s always funny to me when Jennifer Aniston or Gwyneth Paltrow admit the obvious, which is that they loved the ‘90s. Those are two women STUCK in the ‘90s. The ‘90s were their heyday. They would love to go back.

    I always loved Aniston’s style.

She and Penelope Cruz do casual in the best way.

    • Red says:

Me too, she’s relaxed and has awesome skin. I saw this when it came out, and looked into the new Aveeno night-time cream. I had always thought they were a company you could trust, but looking at the ingredients scared the ** out of me. It’s all chemicals and names you can’t pronounce. I guess they have great branding, and a lot of people following them based on Aniston’s on brand name. It’s a shame, because I was out the door to buy and then just was disgusted by what they put in their ‘natural’ products.

  2. Lucy says:

I’m 26 and I loved the 90s, my childhood was so simple and what you’d want a childhood to be. Riding bikes, playing outside, big comfy clothing. I see my 15 year old sister now and feel sorry for her, life is all snapchat, instagram and sending boys provocative pictures

    • Brittney says:

I’m 28 and I totally agree… no pressure to be a mini-adult, pre-9/11 innocence, pre-recession sense of security, etc. AIM and reality TV were the turning points for our generation, I think, too.

But I also say that as a white girl who grew up in the suburbs. I would never wish to rewind the clock, because there are so many people who didn’t have the voice and rights they have now. It wasn’t even that long ago, either.

      • lucy2 says:

The 90s for me were high school and college – definitely simpler times when I look back.
But I agree – there are things you can like about the past, but anything more undoes so much progress.

  3. InvaderTak says:

Yes, we all know you loved the 90’s.

    • Hadleyb says:

I dont blame her. I loved the 90’s too, they were my hey day as well.

The only thing better now is technology.

  4. aims says:

She should, the 90’s were good for her.

I my teen years were the 90’s and it was amazing! The music, fashion. My heart will always belong to the 90’s.

    • Green Girl says:

Buzzfeed had an article a few months back about how awesome 1999 especially was for music. I was reading it and it was like top song after top song after top song. I wish I could have 1990s music and clothing again, but with today’s technology because dial-up STUNK.

  5. Anon says:

I actually really like Aniston’s casual, day-to-day style. I think that’s when she looks her best. I agree about skin care, anything too complicated and I don’t stick to it. Skin loves a routine, so I try to keep it simple.

  6. perplexed says:

I’d like to go back to the ’90s. That’s before we saw Donald Trump on CNN 24/7.

I can’t fault Jennifer or even Gwyneth for liking the ’90s…

  7. lisa2 says:

I thought she said in a previous interview that she didn’t like the nineties.. but then most of her interview just all run together

    • Mango says:

I don’t think she said she didn’t like the 90s. She said her 30s “blew” though, in reference to her Pitt marriage. She’s a nice woman but boy she’s as shallow as a puddle in interviews.

  8. Nancy says:

I have saved certain pieces of clothing but don’t embrace them. I am more of a minimalist. Don’t use it, toss it or give it to someone who wants it. I do like Jennifer, but you can tell she isn’t a mother. She spends a whole lot of time on herself. I guess whatever works for you.

    • Esmom says:

The only thing I’ve saved from the 90s are my overalls, not sure why. And some nice work pieces from Banana Republic and J Crew. I’m not sure why I have those either because if I ever do go back to work in a conventional office I’d never wear that stuff.

As for Jennifer spending a lot of time on herself, I know plenty of women with kids who are the same way.

      • SilkyMalice says:

Oh my goodness, my favorite shirt came from JCrew in the 90s. The neck is frayed, but I keep wearing it. I have some really old Banana Republic as well. Good stuff.

    • Luna says:

being selfcentered have nothing to do with not being a mother

    • Nancy says:

Luna: I have two kids, a husband, work at home and the whole nine yards. I just meant I don’t have the “me” time she has. I’m not knocking her.

    • JenYfromTheBlok says:

I’m 45 and the 90s were my lost 20’s . Yuck. Worst most confusing time of my life. I wore vintage mostly and never ever watched television. I was truly a depressed grunger. Some of the music I miss (mud puppies?) but loathe the whole mainstream of that ere.

  9. knower says:

    I was a 90s kid….and man, THE 90S ARE AWESOME!

    I know, I’m biased.

  10. Sasha says:

I think that Aniston hasn’t landed a Vogue cover in ages is because she hasn’t done anything significant in ages…

  11. nicegirl says:

Born in 1975, graduated high school in 1993, turned 21 in 1996. The 90’s were my jam.

And wow, those music festivals. Those were the days!

    • Eden75 says:

      This.

The only thing I kept from the 90’s were the 12 pairs of Doc’s that I had. The made in the UK kind. I was recently told that I could sell them for a fortune. That is not going to happen. They are back in style, so out of storage they come. Bring on the flannel baby, haha!

      • CdnDutchGirl says:

I haven’t stopped wearing mine…but I wear them a little less and baby them because the made in China ones are crap!! 😄

  12. KBeth says:

I’ve always liked Aniston’s style but she looks kinda dated lately…the highlights & bronze face.

  13. mia girl says:

“music festivals that were actually for everybody (and not just rich kids)”

YES TO THIS. I was at the first Lollapalooza in 1991 (one day show only) and look at the ticket price:
    http://janesaddiction.org/img/tour/19910820_janes_ticket_1.jpg

Now a one day ticket goes for $120+ and if you really want to see the best bands you have to go multiple days.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Lollapalooza! I had no business going with my older sister but I did. I was a teen in the 90s but I do have fond feelings. All of the music alone is worth the throwback.

  14. Kate says:

We all loved the 90s but some of the fashion should be burned i.e. Overalls and half shirts.

    • I Choose Me says:

Pshaw. Overalls and half shirts with a fendi hat, big hoop earrings and mutiple bangles to accessories natch, were the bomb.

  15. AmyB says:

I was a young twenty something in the 90s and still have most of those clothes….now my 15 year old daughter is wearing them and loving them lol! I was more an 80s kid, young adult in the 90s and am SO grateful I am not young these days with social media trolls, the saturation of reality TV, Instagram and Snapchat selfies, and the self-obsession with getting “followers” etc. Even my daughter has remarked that she wished she grew up in a different generation. 🙁

  16. edith says:

….. the 90s style come back is almost over, I dont understand….. like…. it was here the whole time? everyone went grunge (and no, I’m not talking about miley) or goth with all this witch-stuff, did you guys miss this? this years fashion week was all about the 70s, we already are moving away to another decade!! GUYS!!!

    • tealily says:

I was thinking the same thing! It’s been flannels and baby doll dresses for a while now.

  17. kibbles says:

I was born in the 80s and remember the 90s well because that was basically my childhood and teen years. I feel old for saying this but the 90s seemed like such an innocent time compared to the world we live in now. I know people older than I also say the same about the 50s, 60s, 70s…but I really think that the internet, Columbine, 9/11, and all of the what followed (wars in the Middle East, the rise of Islamic terrorism, the collapse of the economy, regular mass shootings, etc.) was the beginning of a new era for both America and the rest of the world. I feel kind of lucky that I grew up before the internet and cellular phones. Columbine was such a major shock to the world and I remember a school assembly after that happened…now mass shootings seem like a regular occurrence. I don’t envy the children growing up in today’s world. So this one time I’ll agree with Aniston that the 90s compared to everything that followed was pretty awesome and I do reminisce about the fashion and the way things were before everything seemed to change.

    • AmyB says:

I posted above this and I completely agree with you @kibbles. I graduated college in ’91, wrote my Philosophy senior thesis without the internet and saw the OJ Trial unfold in real time in ’94. It was a more innocent time for sure. I agree Columbine, 9/11, cell phones (I did not have my first cell phone until I was in my late twenties about to get married), the internet, social media have all forever changed the landscape of our world today; and that is not such a good thing!! I worry for today’s generation especially because my young daughter is 15.

  18. Alix says:

Why on earth WOULD she be on the cover of Vogue now? Industry-wise, she hasn’t been relevant for years.

  19. Magnoliarose says:

I lived in my Daryl K hipster boot cut pants circa 1997 and artfully tousled bed head hair and my Cynthia Rowley purses. Baby Tees, leather jeans and combat boots. Vintage suede 70s coats and just about vintage anything. American Rag if you were in LA. Oh and vests as a shirt with deep red lipstick and glitter body lotion.

I remember well and I’m happy to recycle some slip dresses. But some of the high waisted jeans they are doing now are unforgiving of monthly bloat or a carbo loaded meal. They can give you an unfortunate pelvis situation so I’m not all onboard yet plus they lend themselves to camel toes. I’m easing myself into it and looking for a good match.

As for Rachel, I never believed she ever left 1998 so if she hangs on as we move through the decade, 1998 is right around the corner.

  20. JenB says:

Ahh..the good old days, still some of my favorite music. I love this video about the 90’s from Rashida Jones. It brings back so many memories!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T-P63_E-Ss

  21. Ashley says:

Who doesn’t love the 90’s ? Best decade ever!!!! The music, movies, sitcoms, fashion. I could go on,I thoroughly enjoyed the 90’s.

  22. lisa says:

    LOL! water, water, water

sure jen, i guess her water is coming with a tiny surgeon in it

  23. Antigone says:

I miss the ’90’s too. I graduated from high school in 1990 so the ’90’s were when I was a young adult. I really got into the grunge/alternative trends. I miss the whole 1990’s vibe, actually. I know I sound old but I am so glad that I was young before social media-no worries about any of my mistakes being broadcast online. It was an easier time overall (although I think the advances that the LGBT community have made in the interim are awesome and I would never want to go back in time in that respect).

  24. Jayna says:

I loved the ’90s. Seal was the ’90s with three great albums, Seal (1), Seal (2), and Human Being. Lots of great friends and lots of fun.

I always loved Jen’s casual style also, and I loved later her pencil skirts with tailored blouses and emulated the look. She was a little thinner then.

She does look more dated sometimes lately in some of her outfits for award shows.

    • Mango says:

“She does look more dated sometimes lately”

I agree. She was loathe to change her hair for a while too, and that made her look dated too. But her body is really insane. She’s got perfect proportions and she’s not stick thin. Amazing, amazing body.

  25. I Choose Me says:

Aveeno skin moisturizer and black head prevention made me break out, the opposite of what’s it’s supposed to do. I think it’s the salicylic acid. A friend and co-worker told me that anything with salicylic acid makes her break out too. It cost me twenty three bucks so I’m loath to throw it out but I’ll have to since I can’t use it.

I’m a 90s girl fah sure. Lots of fond memories.

  26. SilkyMalice says:

When it comes to makeup and skin, the older I get, the less IGAF for one, and for another, too much makeup ages you. I am trying to get my colleagues used to seeing me with less and less makeup. One thing I won’t do without though, is under eye concealer.

  27. Sara says:

I loved the 90’s. Best time being young. The music, the clubs, clothes, actual conversations and coffee houses. Every time I watch the movie Singles, I get goosebumps.
