Charlize Theron’s beauty didn’t keep her from being cast in ‘Fast & Furious 8’

FFN_RIJ_WE_CALIFORNIA_040716_52016600

Here are some photos of mind-numbingly gorgeous Charlize Theron at WE Day yesterday in LA. I’m truly shocked that people weren’t passing out at the sight of her powerful beauty! Anyway, as we know, Charlize thinks there’s a dearth of roles for gorgeous six-foot blonde models. People have no imagination, she says. They toss aside the beautiful women so that they can hire bridge trolls like Angelina Jolie, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman and more. We do not know how Charlize suffers! So thankfully, she was able to score one role which was probably meant for one of those ugly women, but Gorgeous Charlize was able to get the part somehow!

Charlize Theron has officially joined the cast “Fast 8,” the next installment in Universal’s long-running “Fast and Furious” franchise, sources confirm to Variety. Details behind the role are vague, but she’s expected to be playing some sort of villain. The studio went to the star early for the role, but because the script was still being written, Theron did not want to commit to anything until a finished draft was completed.

Even after a script was finished by Chris Morgan and Theron was happy with the end result, she still had to weigh her options as the actress was also attached to star in the Sony spy thriller “The Grey Man,” which is considered a huge franchise opportunity for Theron and Sony. Insiders say since the “Grey Man” script was originally intended for a man, Sony had the script rewritten; because of delays in delivering a brand new script, Theron’s schedule opened up, eventually leading to talks with the two parties.

The latest installment begins production this summer with a planned April 14, 2017, release. Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez will reprise their roles, with F. Gary Gray taking over the directing reins. Neil Moritz and Diesel will produce.

[From Variety]

This was actually a rumor back in February, when producers were first talking to her about taking the villain role. I said then and I’ll say now… I don’t think this is a bad move for her career at all. Some people look down their noses at the Fast & Furious franchise but those films mint money and the cast and crew really seem to enjoy working together. Plus, I’m sure the studio is throwing around a lot of money to get an Oscar winner like Charlize in the role. Thank God Charlize isn’t even more beautiful or she never would have had the chance at this role.

Is it just me or do her lips look strange in that close up? Maybe I’m too ugly to understand true beauty.

PS I did like her in the Italian Job, I’m sure she’ll be great in F8

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

It looks like she is wearing Nicole Kidmans lips. I am too ugly to understand true beauty also.

      • key says:

fillers bad work. There was a great article in THR time ago about the difference between LA vs. NYC regarding plastic surgery. Basically it said west coast is Meg Ryan’s bad, tacky work, while east coast is Robin Wright’s almost unnoticeable, classy work. Well, here Charlize actually painfully resembles Meg Ryan.

      • Liz says:

Nicole Kidman’s lips immediately came to mind as well! She needs to see Jennifer Garner’s lip plumper because hers look much more natural.

    • kai says:

I was going to ask about her lips as well. Those look new.

      • Calcifer says:

She looks like a cross between Nicole Kidman and Chelsea Handler in these pictures. Not like herself at all.

    • Eleonor says:

I don’t know to me she looks puffed, something in the cheek area.
But a strong gorgeous and self confident woman surely doesn’t need fillers and botox.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, she’s been fiddling with her face.

    • Christin says:

It was obvious in some daytime red carpet photos last year that she dabbles with fillers.

Oh, and she appears to have lipstick on her side teeth. Plus a Goop-ish crayon yellow toned hair color.

    • Tara says:

Just bad makeup. In candids you can see her face looks fine and lips normal.

    • Misti says:

@Snazzy – The Italian Job 2003 was great.
One of the few remakes that did justice to the original.
See also The Thomas Crown Affair.

    • Rae says:

I was just coming to comment with something along these lines.

      She’s had worked done, definitely.

    • amilu says:

It definitely looks like she’s had some work done since the last time I saw her.

    • Jezza says:

*sigh* count this uggo in for not understanding true beauty as well. Poor, beautiful Charlize, who has such a hard time of it because -excuse my beauty- she gets passed over for the meatier roles. In light of her comments, I wonder if she feels like she slumming it with the F&F franchise. I love the movies, but maybe the stuck up cow doesn’t.

    • Jillybean says:

…..aaaand we ALL jumped on those new lips…

  2. Alix says:

Didn’t keep her from winning an Oscar for “Monster”, either. Girl needs to shut up.

    • MooHoo says:

okay – but for that role she disguised her beauty by wearing a special mask or something

    • Tara says:

It just proves she’s right because it took her disguising her beauty to be taken seriously.

      • SloaneY says:

She had to alter her appearance to look like the character.

      • JWQ says:

No, it just proves that Hollywood is ok with hiring gorgeous women and then make them ugly for a movie (because for a woman it’ s brave to not use the apparently only quality they have, beauty) instead of hiring someone who is already ugly or average looking. Charlize Theron was going to regain her body and face in a matter of two months, and was going to be perfect by the time producers needed her for the promotional tour and award season: an ugly woman would’ ve remained ugly.

      • Tara says:

That may be true that ugly and unattractive people have a harder time in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean Charlize didn’t have to struggle to be seen as more than a pretty face and it took her masking that pretty face in a great role for people to see that. People just think when you’re pretty you should be quiet and never complain, so that’s why they are being hard on Charlize. Just because there are other people going through a hard time doesn’t mean Charlize’s own experience pre-Monster is invalid.

      • perplexed says:

” but that doesn’t mean Charlize didn’t have to struggle to be seen as more than a pretty face and it took her masking that pretty face in a great role for people to see that”

Why didn’t she just word her commentary the way you did? Your statement makes sense — hers was put in a blunt way, but the bluntness wasn’t presented well. There was no nuance in how she presented her statement, and if it takes that many people explaining what she might have really meant she didn’t state her ultimate point about pretty people also facing challenges very well.

  3. Liberty says:

I hope someone powerful who understands the plight of blonde tall models and tries to help them as much as he can, someone like Leo D, can offer her a shoulder and a foot up. Perhaps he can produce a movie as a kind of charity move, and she can play the building he lives in. So she doesn’t have to keep going begging for these franchise opportunities, poor dear. 🙁 the struggle!

  4. Supersoft says:

What happened to her face? She looks like a different person.

  5. Jayna says:

    I love her. That’s all.

    • GlimmerLinnie says:

I love her too, but I HATE the F&F movies 😀

    • Kitten says:

Me too. Love her but don’t like F&F.

    • SJO says:

Also love her but she is never going to live that sh&# down.
It was a fairly obtuse comment. If she were someone who was in the love to hate collum she would be completely shredded instead of the intense side eye she is receiving.

      • perplexed says:

Yeah, if Gwyneth had said this, I shudder to think….

      • Tara says:

Hopefully she explains it better because people aren’t seeing that she’s talking about the audition process. She’s not talking about herself now.

But how about Michelle Pfeiffer has been saying the same thing for years and no one had an issue.

    • whatnext says:

      I think she’s an a-hole.

      • mee says:

agree. have read enough about her that she comes across assy to me. eh maybe when she loses her overwhelming beauty, she’ll start to get really good roles.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Me too. I like her too. I’ve liked many of her movies and I like that she survived an abusive upbringing and I love that she doesn’t try to sugarcoat or tone herself down. I love that she gave Tom Hardy as good as he gave her. I would love to see David O try her and be around for the shut down. I like she possibly ghosted Sean Penn.

  6. Nicole says:

I think her lips are definitely being messed with but it doesn’t look bad on her. I think the improvement is she stopped doing whatever was messing with her forehead and eyes. When she was with Sean Penn she looked too tight and severe. She looks relaxed now…. Maybe it was just being away from him that relaxed her face!

  7. Cali81 says:

I doubt this is a big pay day (this franchise certainly doesn’t need “Oscar winners” to keep succeeding), but it a great victory for pretty people- take that “ugly” oppressors who steal all the good roles…ugly Meryl, Angie, JLaw, Cate B, etc. are so sad and jealous today.

  8. Maya says:

Beauty is as beauty does – always said Charlize is stunning but her personality is not.

As the years go by and she opens her mouth – I am proven right.

She would not have gotten this role in FF franchise if it wasn’t for her looks – FF is based on good looking men and women, car chase and action.

As a producer for Monster, she could have hired a person who was attractive and resembled the killer – not play the role herself by gaining weight and use makeup to tone down her beauty.

Scarlet Johanneson just gave a pretty good interview about equal pay and beauty.

Charlize could learn from her and other women like Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts etc who all accept how lucky they have been in their lives. Despite being few of the most beautiful women in the world – Angelina, Cate & Marion are getting some pretty meaty roles.

    • Jayna says:

She was amazing in Monster. Are you suggesting she shouldn’t have done that role? She won an Oscar. She is a tremendous actress who through great acting, not just makeup, made that part amazing.

      • Maya says:

        Missing my point completely there..

She hired herself and uglied herself to play that role.

She only came to the industry because of her looks and now claims it is stopping her from getting good roles.

Charlize cannot have it both ways especially since she got a role which could have gone to another actress who was less attractive.

      • Kitten says:

That’s actually not at all what happened, Maya.

Patty Jenkins sought Theron after seeing her work in The Devil’s Advocate. She floated the script for Monster to Theron because she thought she’d be perfect for Aileen. Theron was as surprised as anyone but she has talked many times about how she got swept away in Jenkins’s belief in her. Theron then signed on to produce the movie so she and Jenkins could have creative control.

Man, it’s so off-putting how women reduce other women down to just looks, even someone as incredibly talented as Charlize.
Maybe that’s what Charlize was getting at with her earlier comments. Hmmmm…

      • SloaneY says:

We aren’t saying she isn’t talented. She is very talented.
        We just want her to,
(to use a phrase bantered about here a lot)
        admit her privilege.

      • FingerBinger says:

@Kitten I said this yesterday in the weiner dog thread. The comments here are proving Charlize’s point. She’s being reduced to her looks.

      • perplexed says:

She’s not being reduced to her looks. She’s being reduced to her complaint.

      • Maya says:

Actually – Charlize reduced this down to looks and no one else.

We are just pointing out how wrong she was to say that statement.

No one here is questioning her talent at all.

@Lizabeth: if Salt wasn’t meaty then Mad Max wasn’t either. If Maleficent wasn’t meaty then Show White wasn’t either. If you say Angelina’s career is going down then so is Charlize’s.

      • FingerBinger says:

@Maya No she didn’t reduced herself down to her looks. She saying others are doing that. Reading these comments she’s right. You like many others are basing your comments on a comment she made without knowing the context. You don’t need to keep comparing Angelina and Charlize. They’re on 2 different paths with their careers. There’s really no reason for it.

      • Kitten says:

People are saying that Theron’s achievements are entirely due to her beauty-that’s reducing her to her looks, while conveniently ignoring the fact that she’s one of the most talented actresses working today.

“Privilege” is a word that’s been co-opted to describe anyone who isn’t ugly, overweight, of color, handicapped, poor, and elderly. Too bad because it’s an important term but it’s been bastardized.

      • Paige says:

People aren’t reducing her to her looks. People are just calling her out for the ridiculous comment she made. The only people that are making excuses for her delusional comments are the people that love her. I used to be a Charlize fan, loved her in Monster, Cider House Rules, and a few others but her comments are off putting. Her personality has made me dislike and I’m sure it has done the same to a few others.

      • Tara says:

I don’t see Charlize’s attitude as nasty. I see her as a strong, direct woman with great sense of humor. I have not seen her be nasty to anyone. She’s not the one with the reputation for being difficult on movie sets, Tom Hardy is. She didn’t take his crap. I respect that. She’s a strong, badass woman.

      • SloaneY says:

But people here AREN’T reducing her to her looks. They’ve just said that she got her foot in the door, or has more OPPORTUNITY because she is beautiful. Isn’t that the definition of privilege? At least, how it seems to be used on this site? Nobody on here is saying she is a terrible actress. No one. She is a good actress, and she has worked hard. But so have millions of other people in this industry. But they don’t have the opportunities that Charlize does. I’m not trolling you, kitten. I just don’t agree with your interpretation of what she said. She seems to think that pretty people get dismissed outright solely because they’re pretty, and I don’t believe that’s the case. How can it be when 95% of the people in Hollywood are above average in looks and meaty parts get played by gorgeous Actors ALL THE TIME. I just think she’s being disengenuous.
You obviously love her and don’t agree. That’s fine.

      • Kitten says:

Sorry guys but all I’m seeing in these comments are “This uppity bitch has the nerve to insinuate that she rightfully earned her career instead of having it handed to her because she’s genetically blessed.”

And yeah, I absolutely disagree and no, I won’t change my mind so I’m not sure there’s any point arguing about it. Sloane-you are right that I’m a huge fan of Theron as an actress. On a personal level, I greatly admire her for rising above what was by all accounts a pretty horrific childhood with an abusive and alcoholic father whom her mother eventually shot in self-defense.

She’s a strong, beautiful, and immensely talented woman and I don’t think she needs to apologize for that nor do I think she needs to play humble to make everyone here happy. I think she’s earned a successful career in acting through sheer talent, tenacity, and smart choices-fair and square-end of.

It’s all good if you don’t agree–doesn’t bother me one bit. I still like y’all 😉

    • Malice says:

I’m sorry but Angelina is NOT getting the meaty roles that the likes of Marion and Cate are getting.

      • Maya says:

Angelina refused Gravity, Serena and many other parts according Jennifer Lawrence and other people involved.

Maleficent, Changeling, Salt are pretty meaty roles and Angelina played them.

Apparently Cleopatra is still on, Maleficent 2 & Salt 2 are in the works and she is being courted for Bride of Frankenstein & another action character (forgot the name).

      • lizabeth says:

I’m not one to measure women against each other, but since you did (ha) I think Charlize is at the top of the list for talent and beauty, followed closely by Marion who does excellent work and is stunning.

Cate Blanchette is an acquired taste beauty wise, although wonderful on screen.

Julia and Angelina are mediocre at best, more movie stars than actresses in my opinion, with neither having particularly glittering careers at the moment. Calling Salt and Maleficent a meaty roles is just ridiculous.

      • Kitten says:

        What Malice and Lizabeth said.

      • Monica says:

Actually SALT was a meaty action role because Tom Cruise was originally suppose to star in it and Jolie got $20 mil for it. You telling me other actresses wouldn’t want that? Ditto to Maleficent where her name was above the title. Just because it’s not Oscar bait it doesn’t mean it isn’t meaty. Hence why Charlize is doing FF 8 and even the shitty the Huntman. Charlize is talented but has a nasty attitude.

      • perplexed says:

That’s an interesting point about attitude. I think it’s possible some people get parts because you know it’s going to be easy to work with them. I don’t think Brad Pitt is the best actor, and I’ve always been slightly baffled by his success when it comes to the talent factor, but everyone talks about how nice and easy-going is — that good attitude and professionalism has probably helped him to have a long career. Someone like Brad Pitt is probably easier to deal with on set than, say, Lindsay Lohan. (Of course, Brad Pitt’s looks helped him too, which is why Rob Lowe’s complaint about not getting roles because of how he looked was kind of annoying).

      • FingerBinger says:

@perplexed If attitude is an issue then David O Russell shouldn’t be working. Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf shouldn’t be working either. Attitude is irrelevant. This industry cares about a. can they do their job and b. can they make money.

      • perplexed says:

True, after you’ve established yourself as a star you can act like a brat, but I think a good attitude and sense of professionalism can help when you’re first starting out looking for parts and climbing the ladder.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Agree. Two different careers. Two different styles.

    • Monica says:

@maya mad max was raved and nominated for best pic at Oscars winning multiple critics awards. You can’t possibly compare that to SALT. I do think if Jolie was the lead it would have at least made more money abroad. The international numbers were not that spectacular. Anyways as I said before Charlize has a nasty personality, ask Tia

      • Maya says:

Both are action movies with strong female leads so yes I can compare those two movies.

  9. Esther says:

finally the pretty rich white women are succeeding!

  10. Malice says:

Oh dear, is she messing with her face now? You don’t want to become the new Nicole Kidman, Charlize.

  11. Sabrine says:

She looks great. A little fullness in the lips never hurt anyone.

  12. Jayna says:

I don’t think it’s injections. She’s always had great lips. I can see the liner around the lips in the closeup. Maybe just how the lipstick and lip liner is applied outside the lips a little to give the fuller lip look.

  13. InvaderTak says:

She deserves all of the shade for this news coming out right after that BS interview. Hilarious.

  14. Mimz says:

Ahh I think we’re blowing that whole “beauty” thing out of proportion. Although, she brought it onto herself, but I think she meant that the “meaty” roles seldom go to the drop-dead-gorgeous women. Those ones that people need to gain or lose lots of weight and go make up free and stuff.
Anyway Methinks Charlize got some fillers. I still think she’s beautiful though, but I hate that hair colour.

    • Original T.C. says:

      +1

    • Kitten says:

Shhhhhhhh! People must be outraged!! Don’t ruin it for them 😉

      • Mimz says:

Hahaha ok I’ll keep quiet 😀

      • Kitten says:

Too late! You already upset the masses, Mimz. Let’s go to a bar and let them fight about it amongst each other. 😉

      • SloaneY says:

I notice you still haven’t answered my question though. If it’s so hard for gorgeous women to get meaty roles, why are so many women who are getting these roles seemingly…..gorgeous?
I just went through the list of Oscar nominees for the past 20 years. I would say about 50% are what most people would deem drop dead gorgeous. About 40% are probably above average or pretty. About 10% are average or below in looks.
I think we could say that most Oscar nominated roles are considered meaty. So again, I ask, where are all these roles that aren’t filled by gorgeous women?

      • Kitten says:

Sloane-I’m wasn’t answering it because I answered it 8 million times on yesterday’s thread but since you’re basically trolling me, I’ll bite.

First of all, a better way to make your point would be to pick beautiful actresses who have no substance or talent who have gone on to score amazing and complex roles in Hollywood. Examples, please, because I honestly cannot think of ONE.

Instead, you named beautiful AND talented actresses who have won awards for their performances, which just goes to prove Charlize’s point that beauty alone does not guarantee that you’ll get a meaty role.

Charlize never said “it’s hard to be beautiful in Hollywood because all the good roles go to unattractive women”, yet you and everybody else have projected and extrapolated from her words to make the point that looks matter. Well of course looks matter and Charlize NEVER insinuated that they didn’t. She simply said that merely being beautiful is not enough, and that in an industry like Hollywood where beautiful women are a dime a dozen, beauty becomes a common commodity.

As I said yesterday, if beauty was all it took then Emily what’s-her-face would have a thriving career, so would Alba and Biel. The meaty roles don’t go to those women, the complex roles go to the talented ones.

And yes, talent and beauty are NOT mutually exclusive. It’s Hollywood, an industry that revolves around appearance and it won’t change overnight. Americans like seeing beautiful people on their TVs and movie screens—don’t blame the supplier, blame the people who are demanding good looks. This isn’t Hollywood’s fault and it’s not Theron’s fault-they’re just giving the public what they want.

Charlize has been reduced to *just* a pretty face early on in her career. Yes, that opened doors but her achieving staying power is ALL her, even though you and others continue to minimize her talent. People want to make it seem like she succeeded because of her looks when really she succeeded IN SPITE of her looks.
She easily could have gone the way of many beautiful has-beens before her but she worked her ass off to prove that she’s more than just a pretty face.

Honestly, I don’t get why people are so angry about this. It’s like everyone here is screaming about how her perception is completely invalid because she’s an attractive woman. Yes I get it. Attractive people are never supposed to complain about anything because life is perfect if you’re pretty. Must I remind you that this is a woman who’s experienced more pain and violence than most of us will ever see in our lifetime?

Privileged my ass. She earned it.

      • Magnoliarose says:

You again articulated well. My post disappeared but this is my point too. I’m not getting the vitriol or maybe I am and I can’t understand it. *shrug*

      • antigone says:

@ Kitten-I agree 100%. I feel like people really missed her point and that what she said was misconstrued.

    • SloaneY says:

Again. A 1% of 1%-er is complaining because they didn’t get a 1% job. I guess Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts et al are all ugly trolls. Sorry, I think all 3 of those, and others, are just as beautiful as Charlize. Where are these ugly women that are getting all these meaty roles? Even the average looking women? On what planet is Halle Berry less than stunning?

      • Tara says:

Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts have nothing to do with what she’s talking about. Do they have to audition for roles? No. She was clearly describing what it’s like for actresses on the auditioning scene when she says she’s been in a room and pretty people are turned away first. Clearly she’s not talking about A-list movie stars who get offered parts.

      • perplexed says:

But they all had to go through an auditioning process when they were younger too. They didn’t just magically become movie stars without going through the same process Charlize did. And I realize Nicole Kidman married Tom Cruise and that helped, but she did have to audition in Australia before she married him and that’s how she was discovered. Didn’t Tom see some reel of her from an Australian movie and then told the director they should cast her as a 23 year old surgeon a la Doogie Howser?

      • Tara says:

And bringing up Halle Berry is a bad example to support your argument because she’s said a million times that her beauty held her back. Not only was it hard for her as a black actress, but as a gorgeous woman she had a hard time getting great roles when on the auditioning circuit too. Michelle Pfeiffer is another person who has said constantly over the years the same things Charlize is saying. I side eye Jessica Biel when she makes those too pretty claims. I think it’s just an excuse with her. She’s not that amazing looking. But with Michelle Pfeiffer and Charlize Theron I absolutely believe that starting out finding roles based on more than looks was hard.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Yes I’m with you. Mimz. Nodding and agreeing.

    • mee says:

here’s the thing – if all the meaty roles go to less beautiful women, why do the women in hollywood complain that as they age, they can’t get ANY roles at all? Unless, they’re super talented, like meryl, helen mirren, judy dench. the fact is that hollywood is sexist and it’s hard to get interesting meaty roles as a woman, at all, whether ugly or pretty. so, maybe it’s true that when you’re beautiful, you only get viewed through the girlfriend role/lens but frankly once charlize loses her beauty, it will be interesting to see if she FINALLY gets those meaty roles she claims the pretty people are not given. by her reasoning, she should look forward to aging and losing her beauty because that’s when her career will blossom.

  15. Daisy says:

She looks so much like Dexter’s girlfriend Hannah McKay in these pictures to me

  16. Tara says:

She didn’t use the best wording, but I really think she was talking about it being hard to be taken seriously when you’re beautiful and in the auditioning phase of your career and trying out for meaty roles. Charlize, Julianne Moore, Angelina Jolie, and Cate Blanchett are not in the auditioning phase of their careers are they? They get roles offered to them. She was only allowed eye candy roles until a woman took a chance on her and cast her in Monster, so clearly she’s speaking from her own experience. That said, it is definitely harder for ugly actresses, so I think she was wrong saying pretty people get turned away first but I see what she meant about having a hard time pre-Monster. She almost lost The Devil’s Advocate role because of her beauty according to Taylor Hackford.

Anyway let her have some fun with a badass role in the increasingly good Fast and the Furious films. She juggles mainstream and serious fare like all those actresses named.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

      +1
Until Monster( what she produced),she acted “the girlfriend” or “the wife”.even if she already was good ,it was not meaty.

      • Goldie says:

@Tara I agree that there are young actresses who are getting great parts. My point is that 26 is young. With the exception of Jennifer Lawrence, I can’t think of that many actresses who were *consistently* getting meaty roles before they turned 25. I guess there’s Saorse Ronan, but she’s been acting since she was a child.

My point is that most actors can’t simply waltz into Hollywood and have super juicy, complex roles thrown at them. You have to work your way up, just as you do in any industry. But at least she was able to break into the industry. It would have been a lot more difficult for her to get any work if she wasn’t beautiful.

    • Goldie says:

People say that she struggled to find meaty roles before Monster, but wasn’t she about 26 when she filmed that movie? Most actresses in their early 20’s are not getting super gritty, complex roles, regardless of whether they are beautiful or not. By the time she was in her mid-20’s, she was getting great roles. So I still don’t agree with her point.

      • Tara says:

There are tons of young actresses today getting meaty parts. But look at my Devil’s Advocate example. Taylor Hackford went on record saying he loved Charlize’s acting in her audition, but that he thought she was too beautiful and sexy. Charlize had to fight for it. I think she was speaking generally anyway about gorgeous actresses trying out for meaty roles. She said she’s been in the room and they’ve been turned away first. She could be talking about other pretty actresses that she saw auditioning. Not even herself. People are misinterpreting what she said. She should have spoke more clearly. Or maybe the interviewer didn’t add the right context since everyone is after a sensationalist headline these days.

      • Kitten says:

        Exactly, Tara.

      • perplexed says:

Yeah, she was younger then. And the competition, I assume, is quite fierce. Even if she lost a part, it was probably to some other pretty young lady.

I remember Angelina Jolie got good roles when she was in early 20s, and I remember people taking her seriously. It was just the other stuff she was doing that people found odd — but I think she was probably actually considered a better actress when she was younger than she is now, and she definitely wasn’t an uggo then either. Everyone thought she was astounding in Gia.

Natalie Portman has always been taken very seriously, even when she stinks up the joint.

      • Mimz says:

@Perplexed – Nataile Portman is not in Charlize’s and Angelina Jolie’s beauty camp. NO. She can be where Keira Knightley and Mila Kunis are. Not next Angie or Charlize.
Also, Angelina took over our world because she has an unusual, exotic beauty, and had a messy personal life, so of course studios were throwing scripts at her. Charlize is an immigrant who had to fight for her most meaningful roles – different stories.

      • perplexed says:

I would consider Natalie Portman to be quite beautiful, even if she is much shorter than Charlize. She has a very beautiful face. It’s just her personality that works my last nerve. Despite that, I wouldn’t mind having her face. Ditto for Keira Knightley. I certainly wouldn’t mind looking like her either. Maybe I’d prefer looking like Keira to Charlize, because I think there is a certain mysterious distinctiveness to Keira, even though I think Charlize is a blonde 6 foot stunner. All this discussion shows is that tastes vary, and that looks are subjective, so maybe Charlize lost a part because the topic of who is good-looking and less good-looking might be up to the individual taste of the director (or how that taste translates to the screen — Julia Roberts might technically be considered less good-looking than Charlize by someone who doesn’t like big teeth or big lips, but we all know she has charisma in spades that lights up the screen and that ineffable quality makes a movie star).

Also, part of the reason we think Charlize is THAT beautiful is because she is famous. Fame enhances all of these lady’s looks — who knows if we’d react the same way to Charlize if she was working the cosmetics dept at Sears.

Yes, Charlize had to fight because she was an immigrant. So if I were her, I’d be more likely to complain that people got parts because they had the connections or were benefitting from nepotism, not because they were less pretty. In fact, I think you’re more likely to lose a part because someone had some connections, not because of how pretty you are. If she lost a part to Sofia Coppola, then I think that’s because Sofia had nepotism going for her, not because she had her less attractive face helping her out.

      • FingerBinger says:

@perplexed Did you read the interview? You all appear to be basing your comments on a comment without any context.

      • perplexed says:

I read what has been presented on the blog. I tried finding the original question posed and I did wonder if the original question asked about beauty specifically, but couldn’t find the actual question presented on the GQ website.

Even if the question posed asked her about beauty, it’s the part where said said pretty people are asked to room first that I’m reacting to. They may be asked to leave the room at some point after the casting director has gone through thousands of people, but I don’t think they’re asked to leave the room first.

I’m not inclined to actually buy the magazine since magazines cost a lot nowadays.

      • Mimz says:

@perplexed I didn’t say Natalie, Keira, or Mila weren’t beautiful. I think they are very beautiful but they are in a completely different league from Charlize and angie, and many others.
And I know it’s “hard” to feel sorry for pretty and successful people, but I can’t see what’s wrong with her acknowledging the truth – she IS beautiful. And beautiful people also have some struggles, and the fact that they are beautiful shouldn’t stop them from discussing their experiences. Are we saying she’s lying about seeing pretty girls leaving the Auditions after being rejected?
Why can’t we just take her story at face value? Pretty people have something to say too.

      • perplexed says:

Like, I said, different kinds of beauties exist. And people find those beauties appealing for different reasons. On any given day, a casting director might have seen something in someone else’s beauty.

What separates Charlize from the others is her height, not necessarily her face. She’s noticeable because of how tall she is. Well, that and the fact she’s famous and is accomplished. That all adds to someone’s beauty as well. If she were working at Sears and I’ve got my mind on other things like my bills, who knows if I would notice how beautiful she is.

“Pretty people have something to say too.”

Of course, they do. People can also disagree with what they have to say if the point wasn’t presented in an articulate manner.

I also think we have to factor in talent. Even if a less good-looking person got a role Charlize wanted, how likely is it that that person was completely talentless?
Maybe that person had some other quality that made up for the looks deficit — you’re also talking and moving when you act, so it’s not like looks are the only thing that factor in when you play a role. I can understand being upset if an ugly AND untalented person got a role you wanted, but I have my doubts as to how often that happens. I think it’s more likely for a good-looking, less talented person to get a role than a less talented ugly person. If the person is unattractive by Hollywood standards, then for sure they have to be talented (unless that person is Tori Spelling and they can get their dad to buy them a part on a tv show).

      • Misti says:

I think Natalie Portman is very beautiful. Not a sexy bombshell no, but beautiful nonetheless.

      • Becks says:

I’ve said this before, but I have seen Charlize in person. She is not a stunning beauty. She’s attractive and statuesque, but so are a lot of women here in LA. Without the smoke and mirrors, she looks very different.
But then again, I probably don’t understand true beauty 😂😂

      • Tara says:

Well Becks if you really saw her in person you differ from everyone else who says she looks even more stunning in person. Many come away saying she’s the most beautiful woman they have ever seen.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Tara, most famous people look somewhat regular without makeup and great lighting. But the playing field is the same once everyone is made up with great lighting. FWIW. Even in the life of the everyday person, some makeup and a great hairstyle go a long way.

    • anon33 says:

It really, really grosses me out when posters engage in “who is prettier” discussions. You’re just proving her point.

      • Goldie says:

It seemed to me that her defenders were the ones who were trying to argue that certain actresses (like Natalie Portman) aren’t as beautiful as Charlize and that’s why they didn’t have to struggle to get roles, like Charlize supposedly did.

  17. Stephanie says:

She is looking super puffy in these pics, but she is a natural beauty. I hate the longer hair on her, she needs to cut it off and display her face.

  18. Tara says:

People are completely misunderstanding what she said. When she said she’s been in the room and pretty people get turned away first that implies an audition is going on. So enough with saying she’s putting down the Julianne Moores and Nicole Kidmans. These are all actresses who get offered roles. She could even be talking about other pretty actresses that auditioned when she was in the room. She is a producer.

    • Kitten says:

Honestly, Tara, it doesn’t even matter. She couldn’t have phrased it perfectly enough so as not to piss people off, you know?

If she had said lied and said that her beautiful looks are why she has a career, everyone would be calling her conceited for referring to herself as beautiful.

If she had said that Hollywood is a place where only beautiful people succeed, then everybody would be trotting out examples of unconventionally-beautiful actresses with thriving careers.

      *shrugs*

People just don’t like her so they will always view anything she says through a negative lens, that’s all.

      • Goldie says:

I happen to like Charlize a lot and have defended her in the past. I also like the fact that she’s confident and doesn’t pretend that she doesn’t know that she’s gorgeous. Just because some people happen to disagree with her statement doesn’t mean they’re just haters who are trying to tear her down.

  19. QQ says:

BWAHAHAHHAHAH Fast And The Furious??!!?! gurrrrlll do you need new House money?!?!?! dear God!

  20. INeedANap says:

The FF movies are the only major Hollywood franchise that consistently hires POC both in front of and behind the camera. They’re stupid but fun. I imagine this gives her a chance to have a good time and take a role with some leeway so she can spend time with her son.

  21. FingerBinger says:

I don’t see anything wrong with her lips. They aren’t Kylie Jenner lips. As for her joining fast and furious it won’t hurt her. It’s no different from the actos who joined the x-men or the iron man franchises.

  22. perplexed says:

I think she’s done something, because she looks more generic here.

  23. Miss S says:

Just came here to say that I love the fact that she is wearing converse trainers on an event. That’s all.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, she looks stylish even in running shoes.

      • Miss S says:

Those aren’t really running shoes though. I don’t have loads of sympathy for her but seeing a woman not wearing heels in a context where they are pretty much expected to is good. And this is valid not just for 6ft blond women ^_^

  24. Original Kay says:

I love love love fast and furious, even Tokyo drift. They are on Netflix too!!

  25. sofie says:

Why be nasty about jolie? Difference is Charlize wants those top roles. Angelina couldn’t care less these days. Think Jolie will give up & do humanitarian work full time. That is where her heart is. She said herself she lost the passion for acting a while ago & that’s why she was at her best when she started but now she has so much more in her life that fulfills her. Unfair to put her down just to put Charlize on a pedestal. I think when you see all the misogyny in the industry I respect all women doing good work be it in film, TV or behind the scenes.

    • Monica says:

Sony leaks that people love to bring up here had Charlize agent begging Sony to give her the Steve Jobs role over ScarJo. The agents argument was that Charlize was a bigger International star than Scarjo, yeah I laughed too. Only role Jolie seems passionate about is Cleo. People love to bring up BTS as such a big failure that Jolie is done(from what I saw on the last Charlize thread) yet not a peep about the failed dark places movie that flopped critically and went straight to VOD.

    • lisa2 says:

Angie always gets pulled into topics that have nothing to do with her.

I have read so many of Angie’s interviews and you won’t find one where she is complaining. She has said that she doesn’t get offered the roles of the “Girl Next Door” or Comedic parts. That she doesn’t get cast as the Victim in a film. I don’t think she would be convincing as the victim.. but I think she would do a great job in a dark comedy. She became an Action star. She became that despite how she looks. Charlize had a chance at an action movie but it didn’t do well so no one came back to give her another. I’m wondering why they haven’t given her a MM sequel. It says a lot that they haven’t.

Angie never talks about not getting roles. And as was said’ she doesn’t have to do that. She has roles that are created for her. And if anyone thinks that if she wanted to act more that she wouldn’t be able to is fooling themselves. She said that Directing is what she wants to do. That she does have to fight to do that and she likes that challenge.

  26. Dee Kay says:

I didn’t hold Theron’s comments about her challenges against her. Everyone has challenges and yes some people’s are easier than others but that doesn’t mean they aren’t real.

I <3 the Fast and Furious franchise big time, have always been a huge fan and for me the films basically keep getting better and better (except 7 was so hard to watch knowing that Paul Walker was gone, and wasn't really in most of the scenes where his character appeared). Can't wait to see Theron, a gorgeous and great actress, as the supervillain of that universe. EXCITED.

  27. perplexed says:

Honestly, if she had just said that she wasn’t taken seriously at times because of how she looks (even though I do think she has a certain depth to her beauty that maybe Pamela Anderson doesn’t) or that you can be pigeonholed by being a glamazon, or that there are challenges to overcoming the physical presence she has to play certain roles, I would believe her.

But it’s the pretty people being asked to leave the room first that I find worded in an obtuse manner. She worded her statement in a way that makes not a lot of sense (you know, like how Gwyneth Paltrow talks).

    • mee says:

yes that’s the problem. pretty people being shown the door first? please. let’s start up a charity for all the poor pretty people

  28. jesb says:

Is it just me or is she looking more and more like Sharon Stone

  29. bcgirl says:

The shade and snark in this post are killing me,
    delectable!
    xo, K!

  30. elns says:

Hollywood beauty & talent, blah blah blah. I get what she meant. As anyone who ever was in a life time trying to get and achieve something … sometimes it’s not always as easy as it could be or seems.

But I really need you guys to focus on is the fact that F. Gary Gray is directing. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0336620/ Hello? The franchise is not everyone’s cup of tea but I love most of this franchise. I’ve gotten some great knitting done to it. The Kid and I have had some good bonding time with it. It will be interesting to see what this director does for this installment with an incredibly fun and diverse cast and crew. Oh yeah, he directed CT in the Italian Job in 2003.

    • Kitten says:

Thanks for the link. That IS exciting. I might actually watch this now 🙂

    • Miss M says:

I love the franchise too! Even F&F in Tokyo (I saw after FF7, i’m not gonna lie…)!

    • Dee Kay says:

in general i love Gray’s directing style. good visuals and very strong sense of story. i can also see why actors like Theron would work for him multiple times.

  31. Dlo says:

Thank you sooooo much for the tone in which this piece was written! I giggled through the entire read! 👌

  32. I Choose Me says:

I haven’t read the comments yet. Too busy lmao at Kaiser’s write up. Ah Kaiser, you magnificent sh-t-stirrer you. 😀

Ok, now to wade in and see what ruckus you have wrought.

  33. mayamae says:

Interesting how the comments have turned with each successive story. Initially, it seemed the majority of posters were defending Charlize’s comments, and now it’s pretty much the opposite. I have never liked her public persona, and I find her very cold. But she really touched me in a couple of movies. First in the movie Trapped. The movie was lame, but she and Dakota Fanning had amazing mother/daughter chemistry, and she was incredibly warm and nurturing. There’s also the movie, The Burning Plain, where she portrayed the adult version of teenage Jennifer Lawrence. There’s a scene where she’s cutting herself, and the pain and guilt were palpable. She actually made me cry in that one.

And now a physical appearance comment, just because she brought up the topic of her own beauty. She should go back to the pixie. It really works with her face, and she has just about the ugliest cotton candy hair. And while I’m at it, it looks like she borrowed Nicole’s red eyebrow pencil.

  34. I Choose Me says:

I don’t think it’s lip fillers. Could be she bruised or bit her lip on that side. At least that’s what it looks like to me.

  35. Trixie says:

Possible controversial opinion: I don’t think Charlize is that beautiful. She’s pretty, I guess, but she’s not mindbogglingly beautiful.

    • Lili says:

I agree, for some reason I can’t explain I just don’t like her. The same with jennifer Lawrence.

    • lisa2 says:

I think she is beautiful. I remember how gorgeous she was in Cider House Rules.. more so in the nude scene than when she was just dressed in average clothing.

She doesn’t have that kind of beauty that people go on and on about. I don’t see people describing her in these poetic ways. I have seen just a few Hollywood women described that way. Like going nuts about her looks.

  36. perplexed says:

I think it’s because so many actresses have told us how they’ve been asked to lose weight, get a nose job (i.e Jennifer Grey) or that they weren’t pretty enough (Winona Ryder of all people was said she was told this) also probably affects how I might view Theron’s comments.

  37. toni says:

Isn’t this about the patriarchal society that we live. In Hollywood, men run the show. They pit women against each other. Do you remember the controversy about how women are written in screenplays. Hollywood is very sexist read this http://www.vogue.com/13397973/female-script-descriptions-twitter-producer/. Plus Hollywood has a casting couch. You don’t know how many times Charlize was asked to perform a sex act in order to get a role. This town is about building you up and then tearing you down, i.e. just look at the comments here.

    • Magnoliarose says:

That seems to be a problem with women supporting other women. It is support for women as long as the issues are acceptable. We should be appalled in general about the lack of roles and within that conversation, about all roadblocks keeping women talented women from fulfilling their potential. We should be disturbed that all women are put in categories based on looks, regardless of how they are categorized. But if a woman complains she isn’t considered attractive enough to play sexy, then the outrage begins.
Ugh the casting couch angle. That’s a whole other Pandora’s Box.

      • perplexed says:

“We should be appalled in general about the lack of roles and within that conversation, about all roadblocks keeping women talented women from fulfilling their potential.”

That’s probably how Charlize should have phrased her commentary, but unfortunately she didn’t. I’m not sure if it would have even occurred to her to phrase her observation that way.

    • perplexed says:

I think it’s Charlize’s phrasing that put some of us off.

Setting aside whether you think Jennifer Lawrence is as pretty as Charlie, I think if you asked Jennifer Lawrence the same question about attractiveness or whatever else, I doubt she would have answered in a way that sounded quite as off-putting. Charlize’s comments didn’t sound that, well, smart, and I generally think of her as being a smart person (I can’t pinpoint why I have that perception — hey, maybe it’s in part because of her… cough cough…. appearance!).

Anyway, some people sided with Charlize so I don’t know if there is a consensus on how her comments were perceived.

  38. Tara says:

BTW Charlize showed up to the MTV Movie awards with her face looking flawless (proving my point that the pictures above are just bad makeup) and collected the best female performance award for Mad Max Fury Road after the lame Oscars snubbed her. She looked fierce! Work, girl! Let these haters hate on because I know pretty people aren’t allowed to share their bad experiences while every other type of woman gets applauded for sharing theirs. Furiosa forever!

  39. Sara says:

    She has def.had work done.
