Charlize Theron in McQueen at the MTV Movie Awards: regal or boring?

wenn23728915

Here are some photos of Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain at this weekend’s MTV Movie Awards. Charlize was nominated for some stuff for Mad Max: Fury Road, but I suspect she came to the show mostly because she and Jessica are shilling for The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Charlize wore this Alexander McQueen dress which… it’s okay. Of all the designers doing sheer fabric with applique designs, I think the house of McQueen does it well. My complaint is that it looks like they were trying too many different styling tricks in one dress.

From the front, I thought Charlize was doing a very daring high ponytail with a small fishtail braid, but that’s not what’s happening. She did an intricate mini-bun situation which… I sort of like? I like that she tried something new and that she didn’t get five pounds of weave, you know? That being said, it looks like her mini-buns are pulled too tight.

As for Chastain… I think she looks lovely. I love that Jessica and Charlize both wore black and they’re giving me Dark Mistress Witch-Queen vibes, which works for their film. Jessica’s gown is Givenchy, and this is the first Givenchy dress I’ve liked in a while. My only complaint is that Jessica’s girls look like they’re suffocating.

I’d fire my hairdresser if they did that to my hair.

    • Esmom says:

I can’t believe she showed up with that ‘do. Seriously one of the worst I’ve seen in ages.

    • Kitten says:

It reminds me of the Clueless-era hairtsyles of the 90s. No bueno.
The dress is unflattering and the makeup is terrible–what is going on with all that powder along her hairline?

      DISAPPOINTED, Charlize.

      • I Choose Me says:

It wouldn’t be so bad if whoever styled her hair didn’t look like they dumped half a jar of gel in it.

      • V4Real says:

Shhhhhhh; she’s trying not to look too beautiful. She has an audition for a meaty role coming up. 🙂

      • Flora says:

That’s what we call Croydon facelift. Not even Kate Moss can pull that one off and she is actually from Croydon!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Kitten–that’s what I do to my hair when I’m tightening my locs OR I want it out of my face and don’t care what it looks like. Yikes!

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Charlize looks ridiculous.

    • Snazzy says:

I am so confused by that hair

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, like, was it on purpose?

      • Snazzy says:

It’s like she was styled by a drunk toddler

      • Kitten says:

I guess she forgot to rinse out her shampoo horns.

      • Belle Epoch says:

The hair looks painful. It’s an instant facelift!

      • Locke Lamora says:

I like the hairstlye itself, but her face looks off. What did she do to her face?

      • Carol says:

I kind of like the mini buns but on someone else. That drastic up-do just makes her look older than she normally looks. No bueno

      • I like the hair in theory, however it looks like there is too much product in it, and it is too tight. Had they done it up a little looser and softer with more little pieces falling away at the front…maybe. It’s too severe and doesn’t balance the weight of the dress, which isn’t great either. Too much going on.

    • Cranberry says:

Wow. And I’ve been on the other thread ripping on Hiddles’ socks. At least he doesn’t look this bad. Sorry Charlize, you bombed here.

  3. Maya says:

No just no Charlize – dress is okay but the hairstyle is plain ugly, Croydon facelift doesn’t suit you Charlize.

Jessica looks stunning and the dress is nice and simple – hair looks vibrant and healthy.

  4. Elizabeth says:

I always think Charlize looks boring. I liked her a little at the beginning of her career, but have actively disliked her for years. Beautiful women who complain about being beautiful irritate the heck out if me, especially when they work like dogs to remain beautiful.

    • Lizbeth says:

Yes, how dare she be born gorgeous and put in the effort to maintain her looks? I mean, just eat pizza and doughnuts and replace that Dior contract with one from Domino’s, you beautiful fool!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s a complete mischaracterization of what Elizabeth said. It’s the constant complaining that Charlize does about how her stunning beauty has made her life so hard that was objected to, not the beauty itself.

      • SJO says:

I didn’t think it was constant. Just the once

      • perplexed says:

There’s nothing wrong with putting an effort into looking beautiful, but if you want a certain part I guess I don’t see why you wouldn’t do something to physically try to look the part (like, perhaps not do your hair properly like she failed to do at this event) if you want the role that badly. I’m not saying she has to get fat (and for obvious long-term health reasons I wouldn’t make that recommendation) , but there are things that beautiful people with good figures can do to look less good if their looks, at that particular moment, are a hindrance to them. Even the most beautiful person can look less stunning by not doing hair and make-up. She was born pretty, but even the most stunning people are born gorgeous ONLY UP TO A CERTAIN POINT. I think some beautiful people ( I’m not saying specifically her, but talking collectively about comments made in general by people who have a theory about their looks holding them back) are under the delusion that their looks are so stunning that even in the ugliest clothes they can look good and aren’t necessarily helped by hair, styling, and make-up. Yes, you beautiful person, in a Walmart sweatshirt and jogging pants, you too can look bad. Cindy Crawford said that even Cindy Crawford doesn’t wake up looking like Cindy Crawford, before hair and make-up.

In the end, I suspect any beautiful person would prefer the beauty (they enhance) to looking naturally terrible, which even gorgeous people manage to do when waking up first thing in the morning. We’ve all seen the difference between how Kristen Stewart looks when she’s in her streetwear (where she actually seems to downplay her looks and go out of her way to look terrible) and when she’s on the red carpet, and she’s by no means an ugly person (even if she’s not what would be characterized as sexy like Charlize is). She can look quite dazzling in the right clothes, hair, and make-up, and also quite bad in her jeggings (even though she’s a thin person with a good figure). So, yeah, not only can pretty people look bad, so can thin people!

      • FingerBinger says:

@GNAT When has she has constantly complained? An isolated comment becomes constant complaining?

    • Maya says:

@Elizabeth: I am like you – liked her in the beginning because she has talent, beautiful and seemed intelligent.

Then fast forward to a couple of years ago and her true bit*hy personality is revealed. Her interviews show she really doesn’t have a clue about normal people, her friendships with the like of Chelsea Handler (who calls children with racist slurs), her relationship with a known women beater (Sean Penn) has put me completely off her.

      • Kelly says:

She heading into the Gwyneth zone: they start to believe their own press. Special, special snowflakes.

      • FingerBinger says:

@Kelly Gwyneth conscious uncoupling Paltrow is telling you to get your vagina steam cleaned ,get stung by bees ,telling you what to eat and selling high priced junk on her website. Charlize isn’t close to being in the Gwyneth zone.

    • Tara says:

Here we go. So because she’s beautiful she’s not allowed to share what she’s seen on the auditioning circuit? Every other type of woman gets applauded for sharing the negative things they have experienced or seen though.

  5. Jess says:

    She’s wearing Rey’s hairstyle!

    • Jenns says:

I was going to say the same thing! Maybe she’s training to be a Jedi.

    • serena says:

Yess!!! That was my first reaction too!

    • Brittney says:

Came here to say this! I was actually wondering when I’d start seeing it in real life… did not have Charlize on my short list, that’s for sure! Was thinking more along the lines of “little girls at Disney” or “Hot Topic catalog models”.

  6. Lizbeth says:

Not a fan of the hair, but she has such great posture and a killer body.

  7. tegteg says:

I feel like Jessica has worn that exact same dress in a different color…. am I imagining that? And I don’t like Charlize’s hair or dress…

    • bella says:

I think Jessica wore a gown styled like this in emerald green to something…
Perhaps if the bodice was a bit more ample to contain her girls, she’d look better.
On the plus side for Jessica – her hair and makeup has been amazing for some time now after numerous misses making her look like she was losing her hair and matronly.

Charlize’s look is a letdown…too much going on.
And she has the same bad taste in shoes as jen Aniston.

  8. Barrett says:

Jessica looks pregnant to me. It may just be the look of the boobs being suffocated like they are in pregnancy and expanding. Not a good look if she’s not.

    • tracking says:

My first thought, too. Pregnant or very unflattering midsection design on this dress.

    • Erinn says:

Yeah I thought she looked awful, honestly. Just because it’s a bit less bad than Charlize’s look…it’s still nowhere near good.

  9. lilacflowers says:

Remember when the MTV Movie Awards were casual dress?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Remember when clothes were clothes, not bits of mesh with ugly other bits stuck on and granny panties underneath? Those were the days, my friend.

  10. tracking says:

I’m in the minority clearly, but I think Charlize’s hairstyle looks bad@ss. Love her whole look.

    • QQ says:

I see you, i Am With you 100% , if Anything I Think Is occasion Appropriate, mtv/rock and roll/goofy young centered award show? more so than the outfit

…..Though Maybe cause im high already the more i think about it the more it’s giving me nature/woods/and she is some witch all black I Mean… this shit couldnt be more on message, is kinda genius actually!

    • Tara says:

Exactly it’s the MTV Movie Awards. This look is perfect and as badass as she is. Her face also looks flawless. I told people on the last post it was just a bad makeup job. She won best female performance and thanked all the Furiosas out there.

  11. Nancy says:

I think Charlize is gorgeous. She looked gorgeous in rags in Mad Max. Girl has it. I don’t like her hair at all though. I don’t like her hair though. It was probably her nod to the MTV’s. Little funky!

  12. lisa2 says:

Strange how I love her with short hair; but hate her hair pulled away from her face.

    no..and I don’t like the dress either.

    • Jayna says:

I’m the opposite. I hated her with short hair, but she can pull off hair pulled away from her face.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t like anyone’s hair that way. It’s too severe.

  13. missmerry says:

looks like shes trying to channel Rey from Star Wars, and failed.

trying to be a cool mom, i bet…

let that hair down girl, it does nothing for you to tie it up that tight.

  14. prissa says:

Dislike both dresses, but Jessica’s ring is gorgeous.

  15. Mischa says:

I love that Charlize went for the Rey hair vut why such ridiculously tiny buns? Its like her hairdresser wanted her to fail

  16. perplexed says:

That hair looks really bad, which in turn makes her face look bland (at this particular event) and the only reason I’m scrutinizing it is because she said pretty people are asked to room the first. With that hairstyle, she wouldn’t be asked to exit the room first.

  17. Magnoliarose says:

I don’t like either look from head to toe. Charlize’s hair could have been interesting if the buns were configured differently and connected. Both women look good themselves but I don’t like the styling.

  18. perplexed says:

She’s done the see-through dress thing before. This looks like a repeat of the other dress, but with the dress hem-length cut off.

  19. Tara says:

Just wanted to point out that Charlize won best female performance at the MTV Movie awards and dedicated it to all the Furiosas out there. I loved it!

  20. Chem says:

People complain about kim kardashian’s outfits but this is the worst thing I’ve seen by far

  21. dAsh says:

She needs to stop messing with her face.

  22. Dee Kay says:

This is so not the best these amazing ladies can do.

  23. JenniferJustice says:

Both ladies’ dresses are unflattering. They make them both appear thick-wasted and neither Jessica nor Charlize are thick-wasted.

  24. maggie says:

Beautiful woman but I don’t like the severity of her hairstyle. Jessica is very beautiful but looks pregnant to me.

  25. Camille says:

I think Charlize looks awful. Ugly dress, and that hair style – yuck. And she’s been messing with her face (have thought that for a few years now), and in these pics she looks much older. This has to be the worst I’ve seen her look and that is saying something as normally she hits these kinds of things out of the park.

  26. Me Three says:

I think Charlize looks frumpy. When I first saw pics of her onstage I thought she was an older woman…one of the reps from the accounting firms used to count votes! That dress makes her look heavy and the hair…. meanwhile Jessica reminds me of Miss Kitty on that old show Gunsmoke. She’s so thin but that dress makes her look heavy as well! 2 Elks Club members ready for a night out at the lodge.

  27. khaveman says:

Really interesting dress and lovely woman — the hair is just bad. Really bad.

  28. what's inside says:

Love her pedicure, hate everything else.

  29. dana says:

Someone was on crack to put her hair up. Nooooo. Charlize never gets it wrong but that hair pulled away from her face should never happen.

  30. Cranberry says:

    No.

What made her think to put that hair style with that dress? I guess the question is irrelevant anyway because they’re both bad choices to begin with.
