Johnny Depp ‘looked like he was auditioning for the Godfather’ in apology video

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard issue apology video

How many times did you watch the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard apology/hostage video yesterday? I’ve watched a half-dozen times and I cringe/smile every time. The late-night hosts were having a field day with it, and pretty much everyone thinks it’s the funniest thing Johnny Depp has done in a long, long time. Let’s watch it again!

You know what gets me every time? When Amber looks over to Johnny as he’s speaking. She’s the one trying to “engage.” They’re both shockingly bad at “acting” in this video, which is what makes so watchable. But it seems that Barnaby Joyce is not done with the Heard-Depps. Joyce is the deputy prime minister of Australia, and Joyce was the one threatening to kill poor Boo and Pistol last year. Joyce made some statements after the video apology was released:

Australia’s deputy prime minister — who once threatened to euthanize dogs belonging to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard — has mocked the actors’ videotaped apology for failing to declare the Yorkshire terriers when entering the country last year.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce told Australian public broadcaster ABC that Depp “looked like he was auditioning for the Godfather” in the somber apology video, but said he did not “think he’ll get an Academy Award for his performance.”

He doubled down on his criticism in an interview with CNN affiliate Channel 7’s “Sunrise” program, advising the Academy Award-nominated actor to “do it again” with “a little gusto.” The apology video by the Hollywood couple was played to a Queensland court on Monday as Heard appeared over the incident.

My God, Barnaby Joyce is such a wanker. I’m sorry! I know many of you think he was right to make an example out of them, and maybe he was, but now this guy is doing interviews just to mock them? I would want more from a government official, I’m just saying.

Here’s Stephen Colbert mocking them:

Here’s Jimmy Kimmel mocking them:

Barnaby Joyce is a nutter. He must have sold his soul to the devil to get to the position he is in today because he is not well-liked by most Australians. He was right in essence but the execution has been terrible. He is embarrassing.

    • Naya says:

Are you Australian? If you are, I love you guys and you make great beer. I say this with love and in the knowledge that Trump is precipitously close to power in my country but you all really need to get better at picking leaders. Seriously.

      • SKF says:

Yes I am an Aussie; but one currently living overseas. Thanks! Yes, well, there has been a distinct lack of good choices in recent years! What I wouldn’t give for an Obama or Bernie here!! Our current PM is okay but hidebound by agreements with the more extreme right elements in the Coalition. Barnaby has long been a joke, I honestly don’t know how he got to where he is!! He sometimes has good points or fights for good causes but he is a blustering attention seeker which distracts from that. Our biosecurity laws are important, and these two absolutely needed to be made an example of; but he has turned it into an international joke which is self-defeating.

    • SydneySnider says:

Absolutely right, SKF and Ksiser. Barnaby Joyce is a prize wanker. This Depp Heard mocking was likely an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, since he’s become a smug little media tart. It’s also fitting that he did this on Sunrise, which itself has become so cringeworthy that it’s dropping viewers in droves. Joyce has been mocked incessantly since he came on the scene, and hopefully, this will continue, because he IS an embarrassment, and more especially since he became Depity PM.

On a different note, I’ve only seen the video a couple of times on telly, and squirmed like I had the most severe case of worms. The funniest story for me was when they were just about to film the clip, and a reporter asked, “Mr Depp! Mr Depp! What’s your motivation for this scene?” Depp looked at him as if to say, “Are you high…?”

    • raincoaster says:

Yeah, but ALL Aussies hate ALL their politicians, always. It’s like a rule.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

Am I the only one who thinks they’re not bad actors trying to sound sincere, but two entitled assholes openly mocking the whole situation? It is completely obvious they’re taking the piss.

    • perplexed says:

It looks like they’re mocking the situation, and possibly the law, so I think it kind of makes sense that the government official would mock them back. It’s not like the official would have had anything to mock if Johnny didn’t look so constipated in the video.

We all know he can act so this video won’t hurt him, but I’d be reluctant to hire her for anything after seeing the performance she turned in for this. She probably could have used this video to her advantage, but instead…I’d be wondering if I’d want to hire someone like her who is an unknown quantity but seems to be kind of monotone to be in my movie. Oh well, she can console herself with Johnny’s money, I guess.

      • V4Real says:

Yes, it looks as if they are intentionally trying to issue a bad apology. It just seems so awkward, so cringe worthy so damn insincere.

However I am glad that Joyce decided against euthanizing the pups. Why make the pups suffer for some dumb shit the owners did.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

This. My mother said they’re ” too spoiled brats in the principle’s office pretending they’re sorry” and damn if it doesn’t fit.

    • MC2 says:

Nope- I totally agree. I think they are pissed off, could not care less & it shows. Heard personally attacked Joyce in the media after the incident and it didn’t help. Not that he’s been a winner in this. But she should have apologized & gotten her dogs on the 1st plane out of Australia.
Joyce is loving this and the attention. Amber was right- he seems like a total fame whore.

    • Jayna says:

      Absolutely.

    • Saks says:

Yes, that is also what it looks like to me. Like Johnny and Amber have zero f***s to give and they are mocking what happened

    • Marie says:

ITA. Their smug, I can barely contain myself from laughing, faces say it all.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Yep, smug entitled brats doing the absolute bare minimum. They feel having to do this is sooo beneath them, just like declaring the dogs was soooo beneath Amber.

That Barnaby Joyce guy may have been in the right and had the law on his side when it came to the dogs. Now he’s just being an arrogant gasbag, using this to elevate his own career. He’s the Deputy PM, surely he has more important business to attend to? They had to do the video and as hilariously bad as it was, they fulfilled their duty. The matter is over.

  3. kri says:

Colbert is the Universe’s angel of perfection. I’m just saying.

  4. GiGi says:

    Colbert was spot on!

  5. Greenieweenie says:

I nominate this story of 2016
And Australia, bravo. Your deputy PM has time for this.

  6. Brooke says:

Joyce wasn’t acing as deputy prime minister when he threatened to euthanise the dogs (extremely over the top and an unnecessary thing to suggest for animals)…the video and spinoffs are absolutely making us laugh endlessly in Oz!

  7. mayamae says:

I actually thought Johnny was doing Agador Spartacus:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYiKRaBDizk

  8. lisa2 says:

OMG.. look how young the woman playing Amber looks next to Colbert.. that says a lot..

People can say whatever about the official in this matter. If someone from another Country had blatantly broken a law in the USA peoplw would be up in arms too. Joyce maybe everything claimed.. but Johnny and Amber are more so. This could have been resolved better. And both Amber and Johnny were thumbing their noses at the whole system. Just made matter worse

  9. WTF says:

Can we get this to go viral? It’s EXACTLY how most people seem to be viewing this “apology” (I have open it full screen to actually see it).

    http://pagesix.com/video/johnny-depp-and-amber-heards-hilarious-apology-isnt-going-to-win-any-oscars/

  10. HeyThere! says:

Those poor dogs! Does anyone know if they have the dogs back?? Or are they being held hostage in some facility? The poor dogs don’t understand. Ugh. To bad their owners were being dumb. Here’s to hoping the dogs were given back a long time ago.

    • MC2 says:

The dogs were never taken. Amber didn’t declare them & she was given 72 hours (?) to get them out of Australia. If she didn’t comply then the Joyce threatened to have them put down.

      • SydneySnider says:

Yes, MC2, and she left our fair shores almost immediately after that edict was issued, along to with Pistol and Boo.

  11. Classy and Sassy says:

The whole thing seems like a piss-take. Depp and Heard seem like douchebags.

  12. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Men you’re free to make whatever choices you want in your bedroom and romantic life, but just remember…age may be nothing but a number but the camera tells no lies.

There will be a day when you’re side by side with your SO and the camera betrays you and your relationship in every conceivable way.

Johnny looks like an annoyed Father doing a forced probation apology with his daughter after he was found buying her underage alcohol. Awkward.

  13. Jayna says:

I loved what I read somewhere, that they looked like they were in one of those hostage videos forced to read a propaganda script. LOL

  14. Clare says:

How come Depp had to be in the video, though, if it was his wife that broke the law? Wasn’t he already in Oz when all of this happened, and therefore not party to the smuggling?

And this Barnaby fellow does sound like an absolute wanker. he has made a mockery of the whole situation.
Yes Depp and his wife are morons and were disrespectful and broke the law. Fine, punish them according to the law. But why s he running around acting like a z list reality celebrity?

    • MC2 says:

I had that same thought! Depp had nothing to do with this legally speaking. Joyce has made it clear that he loves the video & wants it seen as much as possible (to bring attention to Australia’s bio-security of course- no pissing contest here!). So I was wondering if Joyce or the gov told/asked Amber to have Depp in the video to it would get more play?

Joyce may say that this is all for the Koalas but I think he’s also a total fame whore. I also think Heard hurt his pride and so he has taken this on all as a personal vendetta.

    • mmm says:

Johnny was with Amber when they flew with the dogs to Australia. They returned together after Johnny’s surgery on his hand. The only reason he wasn’t charged was because he didn’t fill his own papers at their arrival because his injured hand so the government couldn’t reunite enough proves to charge him too

      • Liz says:

No, Depp was never, ever going to be charged because Amber Heard is the dog owner, she’s the only person responsible under the law. Her name is on their papers. Though yes, she filled out both their arrival cards according to her statement Depp was also “heavily medicated.”

Johnny is in the video because someone thought it would help her chances of getting off. No other reason.

  15. Twohearts says:

Barnaby Joyce is a wanker. I don’t agree with what they did or the fact they got a slap on the wrist. Australia has strict biosecurity laws for a damn good reason. However, the courts have made their ruling, they did your stupid video (regardless of how unconvincing and eye-rolly it was) so let it go Barnaby. Anything more and it turns back into a publicity stunt, which Depp and Heard can hide behind and say ‘see they’re out to get us’, rather than ever acknowledging they deliberately broke the law.

    • Greenieweenie says:

I think the apology is hilarious, but really, it’s weird. I’ve heard of people being compelled to apologize to the court, etc. But asked to apologize to the general public? That’s what community service is for. The rational thing to do would be to ask them to pay for (and make) a PSA. This weirdo hostage video? I mean, I’ll take it and laugh every time I see it but it’s weird. And whatsisname might not’ve been deputy PM when he was involved but have some respect for the office and at least pretend to be busy.

  16. JenniferJustice says:

Periodically on this site, we talk about resting bitch face. Can we talk about Amber’s resting cry face. Does she not always look like her lip is gonna quiver and her chins going peach pit up and she’s just going to start bawling. That’s what her face looks like in 98% of her photos. I get that she her mouth is constantly agape because she has that peach pit chin if she closes her lips, but damn it! I’m sick of her cry face. Doesn’t they have acting tutors or face tutors or something? I know they have tutors who teach them how to speak w/out accent. They have assistants who help with fashion. They have publicists to help with PR. What about her cry face?! Somebody do something.

Amber – I have a message for you. You don’t get good roles because you’re oh so beautiful – too beautiful. You don’t get good roles because not every role calls for permanent cry face. I’ll stop ranting now. I just can’t with this girl. She annoys the freakin’ heck out of me.

    • MC2 says:

Yes! When I saw the still I really thought she was crying & was surprised at how she came across when I watched. I even went back & looked at the still pic since I was so sure she was about to start bawling.

  17. sequinedheart says:

I agree Australia’s leadership sucks and has for sometime (I’m Australian although I now live in California, so I can honestly vouch for it) but this video is making a mockery of the laws of the country. I don’t care who you think you are, Amber-I-wish-I’d-never-Heard-of-you. You’re a shit actress and you broke a law – this apology is pathetic. Johnny, mate – sorry but you look worse than Gerard Depardieu hungover. What the hell has happened?

  18. AmericanInOz says:

I saw this interview live. He wasn’t giving an interview just about the tape. The person interviewing him started asking him about politics (taxes and elections) and then moved in to asking about the tape. He was joking the entire time through the interview. I highly doubt that addressing the Johnny Depp video was the most pressing thing on his agenda that day.

Also, he was being nice by letting them take their animals home. If that was an animal that had to take a public form of transport (bus, train, plane) the dogs would most certainly have been put down due to risk of infecting animals that did comply previously with Australian laws.

    • Apple says:

I totally agree – he was lighthearted about it, brought it up only when asked, and called Depp “an old trout” at some stage. I think these two just made it much worse and whether or not Amber was just too tired when filling out her card, they didn’t care about the customs laws to double and triple check and make their assistants responsible. They got off easy in the end, considering he threatened assault on Jimmy Kimmel and she accused Joyce, who was really just doing his job when responding to the famous dogs in Australia going viral, of wanting his 15 minutes.

  19. Bam says:

    Barnaby Joyce is an asshole.

  20. anne_000 says:

I think it’s great that Barnaby Jones is mocking Depp and Heard. The latter two made this video into one big mock-fest, so ‘they started it’ and now they get whatever they deserve. I’m glad they’re being mocked themselves. If they can’t be serious and contrite, then they shouldn’t have acted like a-holes about it. Just don’t do the video if they’re going to make it seem as if they’re giving a message that nobody should take it seriously. They’re getting it as good as they’ve gave. Poor entitled babies.

  21. familard says:

This goes in the vault: the Heard & Depp hostage video, the Tom Cruise scientology video, the Mel Gibosn tapes … etc

  22. Amy says:

Barnaby just won’t shut up. Such an attention whore.

  23. mmm says:

If I were australian i would be ashamed of having a politician like this at the head of my country and to waste my taxes in silly court cases like this one
That politician loves too much the camera and he used Depp and Heard as his guinea pigs

  24. Liz says:

The video was Amber’s “public apology plea deal.” Basically for certain offenses the court allows you to take a walk of shame and get off free. Her choice, she hauled Depp into it so she wouldn’t suffer alone. He wasn’t required to take part.
