Are Victoria & David Beckham setting up Cruz, 11, to be the next Justin Bieber?

David Beckham posted a video on Mondayof his youngest son, Cruz, singing the Carter Family’s song “When I’m Gone.” Eleven year-old Cruz performs Anna Kendrick’s a cappella version from Pitch Perfect. He looks happy in his sunny backyard and is doing a pretty good job handling the percussion using only a cup and the table. Give it a watch, it’s pretty cute:

I got so excited at the prospect of Victoria risking the crease lines to cheer at the end of the video like that. But David doesn’t have the most masculine voice, maybe that was him squealing? Coincidentally, this comes only days after Victoria posted a video of Cruz singing Twista’s “Hope.”

Super cute Cruz!! @davidbeckham @brooklynbeckham #proudmummy X vb

Was this just a couple of cute family memories posted on social media? Not when your name is Beckham. The videos have gone global and are being viewed as Cruz’s formal declaration of war to unseat Justin Bieber as the Heartthrob Crooner. However, not everyone is happy with it. Piers Morgan is crying foul; declaring it “shameless.” He thinks the Beckham brood should wait until they get out of school to decide what they want to do for a living, saying, “Trying to make him a star like Brooklyn is now a photographer, and I’m like, can’t they just be kids? Really?” Certain things really hurt my soul and one of them is having to admit Piers Morgan has a point.

So is this all one big audition? Now that 17 year-old Brooklyn has his photography career and 13 year-old Romeo has his modeling career, did they turn to Cruz and say, “right, how do you intend to pull your weight?” If it is an audition, it supposedly worked because U.K papers claim it caught the ear of Scooter Braun, Bieber’s former manager, who is looking to sign him. Whether that last part has any legs or not, does it matter? Let’s be honest, if Cruz wants a singing career, he’ll get one. It’s not like anyone expects him to pay his dues.

I guess that leaves Harper, but I think it’s clear she is working on a fashion empire to unseat the Olsens.

You know what I love about celebrity couples who don’t exploit their children on social media/in the public eye? They’re giving their children the option of having a normal life. And by normal life I mean away from Hollywood so that they get to choose if they want the fame or not. The Beckhams aren’t one of those couples. And say what you will about how they’re too famous to hide…they have the money and resources to do whatever it is that they want. They just choose to throw their children into this mess and the only ones who truly suffer are the kids.

    • Alix says:

Exactly. Side note: think any of the kids has ever seen Mom smile?

    • Esther says:

exactly, they are the english kardashians.

      • Locke Lamora says:

They’re not. Their kids aside, David was the most famous athlete on planet Earth at one point. They do have legitimate reasons why they’re famous.

      • Sune says:

Oh my god, please stop. You do realize who David Beckham is, right?

      • perplexed says:

I think David Beckham is considered to be talented at soccer though.

      • Annetommy says:

Beckham was good but not great. A lot of his fame came from looking like he was in a boy band and marrying Posh. No Lionel Messi.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Well, yeah, he was no Maradona, but he was a genuinely talented football player. He has a legitimate reason for being famous.

      • perplexed says:

When he married Posh, wasn’t he already famous?

I figured his fame increased in America because of “Bend it Like Beckham.”

  2. paolanqar says:

Cruz is really cute. His siblings are incredibly cute. But I really had enough of celebrity kids.
And pushing your kid to become the new Justin Bieber is beyond cruel.

    • Alix says:

Really. They could aim a little higher.

      • Supersoft says:

*rofl* I think they meant moneywise.

      • perplexed says:

For all the money Bieber makes, he also gets mocked a lot. So on that level I’m looking at the Bieber thing and going “Why?”

Although maybe 12 year olds don’t mock Bieber as much as adults do.

    • Ethelreda says:

“Cruz is really cute. His siblings are incredibly cute.”

They all look very average to me. Nobody would be cooing over them if their parents were teachers or check-out assistants.

    • Greenieweenie says:

I don’t think they’re pushing him. Don’t you remember him breakdancing when he was 3 onstage at a Spice Girls concert or something? That kid was probably always a performer.

That said, can’t these kids just join a boys choir or something? Please, no more Biebers….

      • Magpie says:

I was going to mention that, it’s so cute, he’s killing it and loving every minute while posh is trying to get him to stop.

  3. Neners says:

That was so cute! I used to play the cup game when I was little too. And he actually has a very nice voice

  4. Ethelreda says:

I’ve said it before, but I’m always amazed by how positively the Beckhams tend to be viewed in the US.

Here on the other side of the Atlantic, they’ve long been considered as just a step above the Kardashians. And they’ve been blatantly marketing their children for years now. Nobody in the UK will be surprised by any of this.

    • Jegede says:

      Very very true.

I can tell you here in Blighty, Vicky Becks was pretty much a big time punchline for over a decade.
I even remember when fashion houses used to distance themselves from her.

Not so much David (Though he did get the mickey taken out of him like most of our celebs do)

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

Remember the glory days when Alexander McQueen banned Posh from wearing his designs. Fun times.

      • Ethelreda says:

David did at least have genuine talent – although he was by no means the only decent footballer out there, and much of his worldwide fame was due to his looks and marriage.

Vicky is the singer who didnt sing, and the designer who doesn’t design. Now that their brand is slipping – apparantly ‘her’ fashion house is losing millions – they seem to be getting desperate, and are now turning their children into an extension of their brand. Like I say, I’m often amazed at the lack of cynicism towards them on sites like this.

      • Jegede says:

        @Zapp Brannigan

        Oh God yes! LOL

Victoria gave bitter interviews about how McQueen should “shove his clothes up his backside” when he snubbed her and refused her seat requests at his shows!

      • Ethelreda says:

        @Zapp

My favourite anecdote is about the time when Tom Ford, who was then head of design at Gucci, heard she was going around town wearing his designs. The story goes that Ford immediatly called his PR office, and was told that Vicky had bought the clothes in their London shop, at full price.

Ford’s response? “Well, somebody stop her.”

    • Karen says:

The US was spared on the WAG years. No solo singing career made it here, none of David’s cornrows appeared in our mags. Not until they moved to America, extensions out – lob in, did they really get any press, and since they did a TV “special” they had a lot of control on their first impression.

      • Ethelreda says:

Yeah, maybe that’s it. Maybe Americans missed out on Victoria of Baden Baden, Queen of the Wags, complete with fake tan, fake boobs, fake nails and fake hair.

      • zinjojo says:

The photos of their wedding are the absolute best! Height of WAG time, complete with gold thrones.

    • vauvert says:

I don’t get it either (Canadian viewpoint). She was a terrible singer, I think her designs suck (really, she puts her name on them, it’s not like she actually went to school to study design) and with David retired and living off endorsements they are pushing the kids into careers while the parents still have visibility.
Really tired of celeb parents who not only buy the kids a career’ they rob their children of the chance at a normal childhood.

    • perplexed says:

I have to grudgingly admit that I think the Beckhams come across as likeable in interviews.

I do think their wedding was kind of tacky nonetheless.

  5. Ang says:

Very cute family! The parents are proud of their kids…wouldn’t you be too? I believe they had control over which pics were released to the media. The story as well…eh?

  6. Jegede says:

Cruz is the only cute one IMO.

    He looks so like David.

    • PinaColada says:

I think the 2nd oldest boy is the only cute one. But looks change, so who knows what grown up versions will look like.

    • hunter says:

NOOOO!!! Brooklyn is the hotness with his swagger and confidence. The others still seem to be trying. I like Brooklyn. Also: I’m 39.

  7. Karen says:

Brooklyn the “photographer” is 17 and unsupervised at Coachella’s drugfest, while they’re p!mping the youngest boy to Scooter, these are some black marks on parenting.

  8. Nancy says:

One Bieber is enough. They have very cute kids and undoubtedly at least one of them will have some future in the spotlight. Hope they don’t go the way of the Kardashians. He does resemble his father so he has advantage on looks alone to the tweens of his generation.

  9. lucy2 says:

I think it’s great to encourage kids’ interests, whether it be photography or singing or whatever – but it doesn’t need to be a career while they’re still children. And if I were famous, I would try to let my kids live as privately as possible, which means NOT putting them on social media all the time.

  10. Magnoliarose says:

This is ridiculous. How much is enough in the celebrity children competition fame game for these celebs? I honestly believe it is about the parents and their egos and less about the actual child.
I hate to bag on children but they are average kids. Nothing unusually spectacular here. Which leads to the question:Why would you want your children to be in a business where they are constantly judged?

I never was a fan of either David or Posh or the Spice Girls. I actually loved it when Anna Wintour refused Vicky B for ages. Dark hearted on my part but the schadenfreude was excellent.

  11. NewWester says:

The Beckhams would actually consider having the man who manages Ariana” donut licker” Grande and Justin ” Needs to be placed in his car seat” Beiber to manage their son? They need to rethink that idea

  12. Cee says:

Of course they are. How old is Cruz, anyway? I always feel as if Romeo is much older than 13.

  13. guest says:

is it me or does he look like kendall jenner?

  14. HeyThere! says:

I think all their children are adorable in their own unique way!

  15. Tris says:

I wonder if maybe we shouldn’t be so cynical about this. I hate to defend a celeb (instead of being deliciously bitchy), but so often we see pictures of David or Posh touching or holding their children so tenderly, I actually think it’s quite sweet. They seem to actually enjoy their kids, and love them, and maybe she is just posting proud mom vids like any of us?

    • Ethelreda says:

The Beckhams have one of the most tightly managed images in the business. Just about anything you see has been put out there for a reason, including the ‘tender’ pics you refer to. Though any time I’ve seen Victoria with her kids, she has her usual ”Who just let one rip?” expression. So no, I don’t think these are ‘proud mum’ videos. I think it’s just more of the Beckhams’ carefully orchestrated PR campaign to push their kids, one by one, in front of the cameras in order to revive their flagging brand.

  16. Sea Dragon says:

Victoria looks great with the weight she’s put on lately. I’m guessing she’s added 15 pounds? Ha! Kidding! She’s just as bony as ever.
As for Cruz, WTH are they thinking?? Wanting their child to become a used, abused, entitled asshole of a child star is simply cruel. It’s possible he’d grow into the role as a well adjusted, well rounded kid but who are we kidding? What Bieber has endured behind the scenes would horrify any parent, nevermind the justifiable public ridicule he’s earned as obnoxious, uneducated druggie. Woe is the day this kid is thrust into that role. Ugh.

  17. Miss M says:

Cute videos, but I do think he is too young. Let them be kids!

  18. Bess says:

Brooklyn is at the age where he will act out if not given proper boundaries. We’ve yet to hear anything about Brooklyn partying too hard or being a brat. The Beckhams have either been very lucky or they’ve instilled so
E sort of sense into their eldest.
