‘Jason Bourne’ trailer drops: will you watch Matt Damon do this one more time?

Throughout the awards season, both Matt Damon and Alicia Vikander were working on Bourne 5, also known as Jason Bourne officially. They kept on having to fly in from far-flung locations for awards-show appearances, which must have been exhausting. But still, we finally get Matt Damon’s return to arguably his most iconic character. Matty D had a falling out with producers several years back when they were interested in making a fourth Bourne film following The Bourne Ultimatum. Maybe it was about money, maybe it was about Paul Greengrass, maybe it was about the story, I don’t know. But Matty D walked away and they ended up making The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner playing an operative in the same “Bourne” super-spy program. Legacy didn’t do that well, and producers once again approached Matty D to reprise his character. This time it worked out. And here’s the first trailer!

I’m happy to see Julia Stiles once again reprise her Nicky character. Nicky and Bourne have such a tortured history, and I would enjoy it if they ended up as love interests. I actually feared that Alicia Vikander’s character was going to be shoehorned in as Bourne’s new, established love interest but it looks more like Vikander is playing some CIA person who is trying to get in Bourne’s head. We also get a glimpse of Professional Grumpy Cat Impersonator Tommy Lee Jones being gruff and mean, Vincent Cassel (!!!!) doing some stunt work, and Ato Essandoh, who I absolutely adore. And now I know why Ato Essandoh hasn’t been on Elementary in a while – he was filming Jason Bourne!

Anyway… are you into this? I’m sort of into this. Don’t tell CB though. She’ll shank me over Matty D in a heartbeat. Which is funny because he so clearly prefers me.

I never understood why this franchise was considered one of the “actually good” action franchises. I find all these films so boring and repetitive.

    • LadyMTL says:

I found the first one to be a bit boring but really enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd installments, IMHO it’s not just your generic “good guy vs bad guy and let’s blow stuff up” action series.

The one with Jeremy Renner was so blah, I regret ever having seen it. I might go and watch this one, I’m still on the fence.

One thing I really did like about the Bourne Legacy is that thy teamed him up with a intelligent woman who was actually older than him and was allowed to take out the bad guy, The romantic interest in the first films seemed to be pretty disposable and it worries me that they have cast another much younger woman; maybe a bit of a step backwards?

As with BvS I will wait for the reviews on this, it saved me a bit of money last time.

    • NeNe says:

      I think enough is enough.

  2. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I will watch it. Damon just does such a good and believable job as this character.

  3. Janis says:

Definitely! Jason Bourne is Matt’s best role IMO. I could watch those films on an endless loop some weekends.

  4. tracking says:

    Eh. On cable. Maybe.

  5. Ennie says:

    I will.
Much prefer any Matt Damon action movie than to any of Tom Cruise. For a very, very long shot and for several reasons.

  6. Tiffany says:

    I really The Bourne Legacy.

This one, eh, not really feeling the rush for it to get here like the previous four.

    • Jellybean says:

I am a scientist and I really liked the science aspect of BL, which was far less science fiction than people think .The film had issues with the writing and pacing, but I think there was real potential in a sequel going after big industry and government supporting unethical research. Mostly I liked the idea of a female scientist in her forties working with a spy to kick butt.

Maybe they will get back to that story line later. For now, they will have to come with something more than the running and jumping, because that has been done to death.

    • Jenny says:

I really like it too. I thought Renner was great and I like that he was a very different character from Bourne. I hope they do make another one with him (which I think was talked about but I don’t know if it’s actually happening).

    • Elisa the I. says:

Yep, I saw it last week on TV and really enjoyed it!
And I will def see the new Bourne!

  7. mama T says:

    Absolutely!

  8. roxane says:

Action movie are not my genre but if some of my friends want to see it i would go. Anyway with the return of Damon this movie will make loads of money.

  9. Melca.Blue says:

Absolutely! So excited for this. And I hope too that Bourne and Nicky become lovers.

  10. roxane says:

Oh and i’m not sure but if Jason Bourne is the kind of movies with premiere around the globe, if so it means fashion with Alicia Vikander and I hope we’ll have loads of brand and not just LV.

  11. AG-UK says:

Yes yes and yes. My son will love it and I have seen them all, he was born (no pun intended) to play this role and I think he looks really good.

  12. mandy says:

YES!!! and for as long as he keeps making them.

  13. kri says:

Tom Ripley was Matt Damon’s best role for me-but Jason is a close second. I still watch a Bourne movie if it’s on and I can’t sleep.

  14. bobslaw says:

One of the things I loved so much about the original film was its use of European locations. It looks like the major showdown happens in Vegas?

  15. TOPgirl says:

Hell yeah I’d watch this movie! I like Matt Damon. He’s a great actor and I also find him to be very down to earth.

  16. Mika says:

I like me some action movie but the Jason Bourne franchise, to me, is a yawn-fest. And Matt Damon does nothing to both my heart and cooch. Hmmm

  17. uglistepsister says:

Absolutely! I love Jason Bourne movies with Matt Damon.

  18. OriginallyBlue says:

Pass. I own the first 3, but since Matt has shown himself to be a complete jackass I have no interest in seeing this one. Plus Julia Stiles is my least favourite part of these movies and something about Alicia Vikander’s voice bugs my ears. I cannot pinpoint it but I can’t listen to her speak.

  19. Snazzy says:

    No Vincent Cassel photos!!
    SHAME *rings bell*

  20. ladysussex says:

I’m SO into this! Been waiting with baited breath! The first one was my all time favorite, but I do love the franchise. Even though they’ve veered so far from the books. A lot of people on here have mentioned it as an “action” movie. Perhaps it is, because there is action, but to me those are the most boring parts. I love the whole international intrigue/dirty governments/black psi-ops storyline much more than the car chases and occasional explosions.

  21. anon says:

Why is Vikander EVERYWHERE? Jeez, she’s so boring

  22. Fluff says:

nopers, he is a jackass. none of my coins his way

  23. laura in LA says:

Yes, I likely will, though that Vegas blowup looks too CGI fake to me. Maybe it’s to compete with all the other blockbuster superhero films that nowadays dominate the big screen?

That’s really too bad for old-school moviegoers/lovers like me. (I love a good story of international intrigue – and a rough-and-ready car chase scene!)

And what made the first three Bourne films so great (and builds suspense in any film) is a raw sense of reality and a fast-paced uncertainty, where even though you know the protagonist is probably going to get out of a tough situation, you want to watch to find out how.

As for The Bourne Identity, I read an interesting article about Doug Liman, a director whose style then was like filmmaking-on-the-fly, something that made the studios, crew and Damon himself nervous that the film might not even get finished.

And as for the problems with the next two (or three) in the series, you can read about them here: http://www.gq.com/story/matt-damon-gq-january-2012-cover-story-article?currentPage=1

  24. Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Kaiser, who wrote: “But Matty D walked away and they ended up making The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner playing an operative in the same “Bourne” super-spy program.”

Matty-D (and Paul Greengrass) walked because the story wasn’t good enough, Sistah-woman … and Jeremy Renner’s character (Aaron Cross) was ‘not’ in the same “Bourne” super-spy program (a.k.a. the CIA’s Treadstone program … no enhancement pills needed to make the Treadstone agents better, smarter, more lethal). Aaron Cross was in a Defense Department experimental program (probably the NSA … where the agents were given, and had to continue taking, enhancement pills to be better, smarter, more lethal).

Matt Damon, Paul Greengrass, and Christopher Rouse co-wrote “Jason Bourne” and Matt Damon, Paul Greengrass, and Frank Marshall are co-producing the film.

P.S. This trailer (or the first one) premiered during the Superbowl.

  25. Sarah says:

I’ve started watching Friday Night Lights (it is amazing) and the character Landry looks just like an albino Matt Damon. It is an insane likeness.

For me, the most iconic Damon parts were Linus in the Oceans films (a loveable dork) and in the Departed!! Amazing

  26. FLower says:

I loved all the Jason Bourne movies and I will be adding this to my watch list.
