Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron-Man will ‘mentor’ Spider-Man in the new Spidey movie

Here are some photos of Robert Downey Jr. and some of the cast of Captain America: Civil War in Berlin yesterday. They premiered the film in Germany, although in Germany it’s called The First Avenger – Civil War, for German reasons. I’m a little bit surprised that Chris Evans hasn’t signed away the next two months of his life to shill this movie in every major city, but it’s possible/probable that RDJ is a much bigger star in Germany and Evans didn’t even want to bother. Meanwhile, as many already know, Civil War features the Marvel-debut of Spider-man to the Avenger pack. Marvel has licensed Spider-man to Sony for years and Sony’s last reboot of the Spider-man franchise did not go so well, so Marvel is doing their own reboot with Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spidey. Holland has a small part in Civil War – he’s Team Iron-Man, and now Iron-Man will show up in Spider-man’s stand-alone film, Spider-man: Homecoming.

It looks like the team-up of Spider-Man and Iron Man seen in Captain America: Civil War won’t be the duo’s last. Robert Downey Jr., who plays the red-and-gold-armored Marvel character, has closed a deal to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel and Sony’s reboot of the web-crawling superhero, sources tell THR. Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and is making his debut as the character in Civil War (and already garnering praise for his take on the role). The movie establishes a key relationship between Tony Stark/Iron Man and Parker, and Homecoming will continue that thread.

Homecoming has been casting up ahead of its June start of production. Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May, while Zendaya is one of the female leads. Tony Revolori, who starred opposite Ralph Fiennes in The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Laura Harrier, who appeared in the soap opera One Life to Live, are also boarding the production, which is being produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.

Downey and his industrialist hero have been cornerstones of Marvel’s film slate even though unlike his other co-stars he has not signed the studio’s complicated multipic deals. His last renegotiation included his appearing in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, as well as Civil War. His appearance in Homecoming required another round of negotiations. It is unclear whether that is to appear in just Homecoming or subsequent installments as well.

Some people (Marvel people) believe RDJ is the cornerstone of everything Marvel, and that’s why RDJ should get paid the crazy money. But I do have to wonder if it wouldn’t have been cheaper, easier and less drama to just get one of the other superheroes to drop in and mentor Spidey? Because I am willing to bet that RDJ gauged Marvel yet again for what will probably be a handful of scenes in Homecoming. I mean, I bet Scarlett Johansson would have come much cheaper?

As for the cast of Spider-man: Homecoming… it’s exciting to hear that Tony Revolori will be in it, because I love that kid. Marvel also approached Michael Keaton to play the villain, but word came down yesterday that Keaton had backed away from negotiations. So Spidey still doesn’t have a villain! And Marvel already blew their budget because they hired RDJ.

    ….I still can’t believe they’re doing another Spider-Man reboot.

    • V4Real says:

I’m thinking that’s the main reason they want RDJ/Iron Man because they know his character is a box office draw.

      • Marty says:

Yeah, I get that. From a marketing standpoint it’s really smart because he is such a big draw and I think a lot of people have a groaning reaction to another Spider-Man so RDJ is a great selling point. It’s just there are SO many good Marvel stories that could tie into the Avengers universe. I wish Fox would give up X-Men too, another underwhelming franchise.

      • Nicole says:

I also think they used him because of the interesting relationship ties Parker has to the Stark family in the comics. Makes for good conflict down the line

  2. Dana says:

I feel like these movies would be successful with or without him. The Judge flopped.

    • V4Real says:

The Judged flopped, not Iron Man. Most of the comic book movie goers are not die hard fans of RDJ but a certain character he plays and that’s Tony Stark. Other actors haven’t done that well outside of their superhero characters either Hemsworth and Evans included.

They are taking a big chance once again rebooting Spiderman so soon. They are trying to guarantee success by including the biggest draw to Marvel films.

“Team Cap” which is Evans, Mackie, Stan & a Russo have been shilling in Beijing and Singapore the last few days.

  4. Chaucer says:

Has Scarlett even been papped recently? Has she been out filming or are we on baby watch for her as well? It’s odd that she hasn’t been present (that I’ve seen) for this.

Marvel split the two ‘teams’ up for promotion; Team Iron Man is in Germany right now, and Team Captain America is in Asia. Evans, Stan and Mackie did the premiere in Singapore yesterday.

  6. Karen says:

RDJ made less than Johnny Depp for the Pirates movies. So yes he’s getting huge crazy paychecks. But no islands.

Ehh movie stars making huge sums of money is not shocking. It’s only shocking if he was a woman, and her name was not Angelina.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

You read Lainey gossips.FTN,RDJ is The most paid actors of all time and you can buy a private island for less one million

  7. jinni says:

It makes sense to have Tony mentor Peter considering they are both brainy people, same way Tony immediately got along with Bruce in the first Avenger movie.

  8. Maya says:

No just no – I am sick and tired of Marvel putting RDJ/Iron Man in most of their movies.

RDJ smugness is putting me off these movies even though I love Chris H, Mark and Scarlett.
