Kelly Ripa promises to return to Live Tuesday, is expected to host with Michael

Kelly and Michael host the show before Micheal's big announcement as seen on ABC's 'Live! with Kelly and Michael.'
There’s still so much drama and press leaks surrounding Kelly Ripa’s abrupt departure from Live after learning that her co-host, Michael Strahan, would be leaving to join Good Morning America in September. Given the sheer number of stories about this, I get the impression that Kelly has the press on speed dial and is giving them quotes as she tries to figure out how she’s going to handle things. For instance Friday right before 1:00 EST, People published a story that Kelly would return to Live but that she didn’t think she could deal with continuing to host with Michael. I guess that’s fair enough, Michael didn’t tell her that he was leaving until right before he made the announcement and she felt hurt by that. I think she should be upset at the network executives, but I get it. A source told PeopleI don’t believe that co-hosting together is a viable option anymore.

Then, at about 11pm Friday night, People published another story claiming that Kelly had emailed the entire staff of Live and promised she would come back this Tuesday. You may remember that Kelly was scheduled to be on vacation on Friday and Monday but that she took sick days on Wednesday and Thursday after being “blindsided” by Michael’s announcement. Well now she’s fine co-hosting with Michael. I wonder how she changed her mind. TMZ reported earlier Friday that the crew of Live was “furious” that Kelly was jeopardizing their jobs. Here’s People’s announcement.

Kelly Ripa has said she will be returning to co-host Live! With Kelly and Michael! alongside Michael Strahan PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

“They’re both expected to be there Tuesday,” a source says.

PEOPLE has learned exclusively that Kelly sent an email to her staff late Friday night saying: “Sorry for this late Friday night email. I wanted to thank you all for giving me the time to process this new information. Your kindness, support, and love has overwhelmed me. We are a family and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning. Love, Kelly.”

[From People]

TMZ has the background on Kelly’s change of heart. They say that Kelly was in talks with executives who promised her the show wasn’t being canceled. Their source also claims that Kelly wants Michael to leave before September. So it looks like Kelly’s press leaks may have been a strategic move to show that she wasn’t taking this lightly. I don’t know if it was the “right” way to handle it, but we have to see how this plays out. I do think she was treated poorly and that she took some time to think about it. TMZ also claims that Kelly and Michael haven’t gotten along for at least two years.

A source close to Strahan tells People that he’s looking forward to Kelly coming back, that he’s relieved and that “He got why she was mad but it was out of his control.” Whatever is going on, the ratings for this show are about to go through the roof. I know I’ll be watching Tuesday.

Tuesday morning will be SUPER awkward for them… I guess I’ll be watching for once. Schools are closed for voting so I’ll be off work and tuned in!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m having a colonoscopy on Tuesday, so we can compare notes on Wednesday to see which was more awkward. 😳

      • AlmondJoy says:

😳😩 you might be the winner, GNAT. I hope it goes well and you don’t have too much pain. Keep me updated!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’ll be drugged and asleep, so I won’t feel anything. I’ve had one before, and it’s not painful. It’s just weird and you have to discuss things with your doctor that are not regular conversational topics. Unfortunately, I find that awkward. But I want to hear how Kelly behaves!

      • AlmondJoy says:

I’ve never had one but have heard people say it was very uncomfortable for them so wasn’t sure… Glad you won’t be in any pain though! I will be sure to watch Kelly closely for you!

      • bluhare says:

The prep work is the worst part. 😀

      • antipodean says:

I agree, @bluhare, good luck our GNATTY, we will be thinking of you, and will miss your input on Tuesday. Your colonoscopy is far more important that Kelly Ripa’s overpaid shenanigans. That Golightly stuff, and the Beef Tea are the worst part of the whole process I reckon, but the knowledge that there are no potential nasties lurking in one’s gut, is worth the mild discomfort. I was really lucky when I had mine, the folks I went to were so caring and helpful, it was very reassuring. I wish you the same GNAT. Good thoughts flocking your way.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Good luck! You will be missed here. 🙂

      • nicegirl says:

GNAT, just had one myself on Thurs this last week. I will be thinking of you on Tues while watching Kelly and Michael squirm through Live. I wish you the best and hope your procedure produces only good negative type lab results. Rest and relaxation to you, GNAT.

      • rylan says:

GNAT, i had one a few months ago. When the nurse was putting me out, I was telling her I have a high toleration to medication (I’ve had insomnia the last 15 yrs & take a lot of medication for it) &I’d need more than usual to put me out. Then i started to tell her that i was sorry I didn’t fall asleep & she says “you’re done ” !! I like , “really? I slept ?? That’s it ??”LOL. The worst part was looking at the pics with my doc later!!!! You’ll do awesome !!! I’ll be thinking of you Tuesday !! — One of you’re many fans !! 🙂

      • SilkyMalice says:

Oh dear. I am supposed to have one, and I am not looking forward to it.

  2. vauvert says:

Someone in Kelly’s camp (lawyer, agent, manager) told her to cool off the grandstanding and remember that she is under contract to do a job, which, if she is not willing to perform, lots of other would and could.

The whole thing was a big power play by her and it will end up hurting her. Because no one in real life is that hurt that they have been “blindsided” with the news that the co-worker they don’t even get along with is moving on in FOUR months.

I capitalize it because all week people kept saying how disrespectful it was of Michael and the network to not give her advance notice. Notice my eye, she got way more than anyone else ever would. And if on top of that the person leaving is not your BF, soul mate, unicorn twin but rather a guy you just tolerate, you should be thrilled. The only reason she acted this way was to garner sympathy, become a trendy hashtag and gauge her negotiating power with the network.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. I think her behavior was childish and unprofessional, and I still do not understand why so many people fell for it. You do not have some “right” to know what your coworkers and employers are discussing. Sorry.

      • Nancy says:

GNAT: Agree as well. Hope all goes well for you Tuesday 🙂

      • Amy says:

I think she was probably more upset about the effects of him leaving than anything else. It sounded like she thought this was the nail in the coffin for her show, in which case she was treated very badly. He gets a promotion, she loses her job with very little notice to find another one.

      • EM says:

GNAT – good luck on Tuesday.

The more I read about this, I think Kelly handled it badly and it may hurt her in the long run. I am sympathetic to a certain extent but frankly the network could have factored in her possible reaction into the timing. I also think that Regis was treated worse (especially after all of his years of service) and didn’t see Kelly standing up for him.

      • Bridget says:

GNAT: because it’s clear that there was more going on than just Strahan going to GMA. And again: lady gets upset at work and takes a couple of sick days to cool down. Not even close to unprofessional.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thanks everybody! I’m sure it will be fine.

        @Bridget
Taking a couple of sick days is one thing. Leaking the story to the press and trying to position herself as the victim of a huge betrayal is another. Risking the jobs of all of the show’s employees, making them spend days wondering if they still had jobs, trying to paint her coworker as a douche because he kept his word to his employer and had the audacity to accept their offer of a better job – that’s unprofessional.

      • Magnoliarose says:

I can’t agree more. She behaved like a child with all of those leaks basically trying to make Strahan look partly responsible. He owes her nothing and I highly doubt she would’ve done things differently if the shoe were on the other foot.

      • The Original G says:

“……..lady gets upset at work and takes a couple of sick days to cool down. Not even close to unprofessional.”

Um, in her position, this is the definition of unprofessional. She’s supposed to be a leader. The only thing she’ll get out of this are a lot of eye rolls and having to defend it during upcoming contract negotiation.

      • Snowflake says:

In my industry, it would be viewed as weak to take a couple of sick days because you’re upset. She’s making herself look weak. If she would have cussed or been pissed, they would view that better than taking a couple of sick days cause you can’t deal.

      • Original T.C. says:

        +10000 GNAT

And where were the cries of sexism when the younger Kelly came in to replace an older woman who was still younger than her male co-host?

Sexism does not mean supporting immature behavior just because the person is a woman. This was unprofessional straight up, I would never act this way and have had much, much worse occur at work. She didn’t win anything and was forced to act like an adult.

    • Kate says:

Agree 100%. I never watch morning tv, so I am not invested in any of this garbage. Obviously the things are cash cows for the networks (which I still don’t get, but whatever), but it strikes me that Kelly is delusional if she thinks this “power play” was going to help her. What power does she have, really? She’s replaceable. Michael Strahan is replaceable. Everyone is replaceable.

    • Catwoman says:

Totally agree. She behaved like an immature and unprofessional baby. I wouldn’t expect this kind of behavior at any level but from such a public figure who makes 15 million dollars a year is unacceptable and plays into negative stereotypes of women.

    • als says:

“The only reason she acted this way was to garner sympathy, become a trendy hashtag and gauge her negotiating power with the network.”

I believe that is the most important reason to act like this, the reason that makes it all worth it. That is a work environment, not a family get together. These are the rules of the game.
Why not increase the negotiating power? Why not garner sympathy? Why not become a trendy hashtag?

      • The Original G says:

But she did not gain any negotiating power. She lost it. She publicly revealed that she was out of the loop on the decision making. And she demonstrated that she would call out a potential employer when she doesn’t like something. Her insecurity about the future of her show looks real. In one move she’s made herself look difficult and redundant. She’s not that important a commodity for ABC. Anyone can see that whole morning line-up needs to be re-envisioned.

She need to position herself as someone who can roll with with and lead some change. BTW, where is her representation on this? They must be the worst.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Because it’s dishonest, game playing bs like that which makes the world of business stink.

      • Magnoliarose says:

As the two above pointed out, she didn’t win anything. These are not the intelligent moves of a person with real power and she behaved in a way that makes it look like the network was right in not telling her. Even if it wasn’t, now you wonder if she is difficult and they had no choice. This was not a “Go girl” moment.

    • Mgsota says:

I agree! The more I’ve been thinking about it the more I think she acted like a baby. She had four months notice…how the hell is that blindsided?!?! I could see if he said “today is my last show…” But come on, she had plenty of warning! Did she think she deserved to know that he was in talks to make the move?!? That would be none of her damn business!

    • tmc says:

I wasnt sure what I thought but then Lainey made the good point that her name is on the SHOW and in the Daily News today a columnist talked about everyone wanting her to be the * good girl * . It is not like just anyone else not being told something. It just isnt comparable. If your name was on the company, it is different. If you helped give someone a major leg up in the industry, there is a certain respect that is due.

      • holly hobby says:

Why don’t you ask Kelly where was she when ABC forced Regis out the door? Didn’t he give her a “leg up” so to speak. Works both ways.

    • iheartgossip says:

I also believe she was ‘blindsided’ by how the general public reacted to her reaction. She believed she was much beloved & found out it wasn’t exactly true.

    • holly hobby says:

You summarized everything correctly. Whoever advised her gets a gold star because she truly is nearing breach of contract. If someone I did not like at work decides to leave I’d be the first one clapping over that!

  3. She is very cute and I love her hair.

    • Suzanne says:

If you watch the show on a regular basis…which I try not to…you soon figure out that she is always interrupting the guests and making it all about herself. She thinks she’s so damned amusing and her constant ploy for attention gets really annoying after a while. It has become obvious she makes half the stuff up she tells….adding to each antidote to make herself appear funny. It’s all I can do to watch the whole show. Wish SHE was leaving…instead of Michael.

      • Snowflake says:

Right, I loved regis, Kelly is too annoying, I stopped watching once she started hosting.

  4. als says:

So, why did they hide Strahan’s move from her? Was it really necessary?
I bet it’s because they never expected this reaction. They thought she would take it lying down, that she would be ‘professional’ and nice, they thought she has an expensive lifestyle so they can make her their b*tch. Maybe they’ll think twice next time they want to shit on her.

I like her. She was pissed off and she had a strong enough position to show her feelings and tell the world the kind of jackasses she works with every day. And she did.
If you’re not going to call out the jerks you work with when you are a 15 million dollars a year network star then when are you? Not to mention the power plays. If you want to negotiate a bigger and better contract, you need to prove that you can walk away anytime and that you’re not going to accept whatever they throw at you.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So throwing a temper tantrum and missing two days of work because she wasn’t told something that was none of her business is admirable? Ok.

      • als says:

I understand that she took some sick days and some other days she had already reserved for her vacation. Taking sick days is legal, right? It’s no one’s business what she does with her sick days, just like it was not her business that Strahan was leaving. Do you see how that goes?
As for her ‘tamper tantrum”, I don’t imagine she has been payed such a huge amount of money for such a long time because she is ‘unprofessional’, ‘childish’ or prone to ‘temper tantrums’.

      • Snowflake says:

But if they haven’t gotten along for two years, why would he or the network inform her of what he is doing until absolutely necessary? Would you give the person you disliked the information that she could leak and use to screw you over? Her statement to People shows they didn’t get along, so I think they did the right thing by not telling her.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She didn’t just take sick days. She leaked rumors of how “betrayed” she was and how “devasted” and what a douche he was for taking another job and not telling her, I guess because she’s the center of the universe. She made all the show’s employees wonder if they had a job to go back to while she sat at home and sulked. She made herself look stupid and her employer look bad – i bet they will pacify her now, because she managed to momentarily paint them in a bad light, then after a suitable period, they will cancel her show and her time will be up. This kind of move might work in the short run, but they won’t forget it, and first chance they have to pay her back, they will. It was a dumb move.

    • swak says:

If he was chosen over her for the job, then yes, she has every right to do what she has done considering the experience she has over him. This anger was all over her not being told about it. That’s petty. People everyday get promoted without coworkers being told.

      • Colette says:

Michael has been working for GMA for two years so he has more experience working at GMA than she does. Her bosses should have told her Michael was leaving.

      • tmc says:

She also had been told apparently per NY Times article that this would not happen once he started doing pieces on GMA. And then it did. Perhaps if they had given her some notice it might have added a bit of salve to the whole thing, but they didnt even do that.

    • bluhare says:

A person can be angry and have hurt feelings and deal with both in a professional manner. Kelly didn’t.

I understand that she’s upset because she wasn’t given the heads up before everyone else. From what I’ve read part of that (other than — as vauvert says — it’s not much of her business) they didn’t want the news to leak. Kelly doesn’t like Michael. I can see her letting that one slip too. I think she should take the high road and help choose a successor who she actually likes.

But then this isn’t much to do with any road, is it. It’s about ratings and money.

    • Magnoliarose says:

The problem here is that these loud stands only work for a moment and then the dust settles. If she were your employee would you ever forget this? She just advertised her petty weakness for the world to see. Her position is weakened, not strengthened. When they slowly undermine her show, don’t be surprised and she shouldn’t either. The public only rushes to a person’s defense so many times before their complaints become white noise.
Even look in these threads. How many times has the 15 million a year quote been mentioned? It was a network leak that hit its mark. Basically they asked her supporters: If you made 15 million a year would you throw a tantrum? And guess what America she’s not just like you now is she?
They also let her know that she can’t survive without them and it’s true. She is ok in her spot but I don’t see anyone rushing out to lure her away. That show is like Law and Order was. The format is what worked not necessarily the actors.

    • Original T.C. says:

      @ALS

Hmm no, Heads of corporations don’t hold information back from an employee they respect or think will act professional or not leak internal moves. They hide it from her BECAUSE they knew she would lose her sh*t and act similar to this. She proved them right. This was not a win for her. Maybe you speak for her audience who will come to her defense.

But for the millions of women who fought hard to climb the corporate ladder and be taken seriously she comes across as embarrassing and lacking smarts.

  5. zappy says:

    this case is so strange…

  6. Louise177 says:

I do think that Kelly should have had some notice, a couple of days even hours. I just don’t think she should have found out with everybody else. People are saying that other people don’t know when others are leaving but it’s not the same. If another lawyer, cashier, etc leaves work you job isn’t going to be too effected. But a co-host is different. Michael is part of why the show is successful. Him leaving could effect viewers leaving, the chemistry of the show, even if the show is cancelled. A lot of variables could effect Kelly’s livelihood.

    • Lille says:

Exactly. Even if she didn’t really like him, they made a successful show. It is rare the a host is replaced and a show stays strong in the ratings. I am sure the show had long term plans on content for the show, that was dependent on him. She had extra job security knowing that they we’re successful, and now that is changing. Plus, she asked and they said it wasn’t going to happen. They didn’t need to tell her while they were negotiating, but they should have told her last Friday, to give her the weekend to process it all, and then announced it to the public this week.

  7. willful ignorance says:

“I wonder how she changed her mind”

    Mmmmm.

Could it be she would have been sued for breach of contract and she wouldn’t get her mega cheque for basically going the best job on TV?

  8. Rice says:

Or it could be a brilliant move by all involved to get more people to watch. Mission accomplished.

  9. Snowflake says:

I didn’t care for the way a lot of people assumed it was sexist and she got treated that way because she was a woman. If they didn’t get along, that’s why the network and Michael didn’t tell her. But a lot of people just assumed it was sexism.

    • Jayna says:

Right. Because if it was Regis, they never would have told him and instead would have blindsided him? I disagree. It never would have happened, and Regis would have done the same thing if ti did happen.

She is an important person on a show that made them money for years. You don’t blindside someone like that and inform them of such an important change-up and tell them the second the world finds out and then you have to go out on stage with that co-host.

Insane and shows her how little they valued her and total disrespect by Michael and the network.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I usually agree with you and I respect your opinion, but how is this blindsiding her? A cohost she didn’t like is leaving. They are firing her. They aren’t changing her job or lowering her salary or doing anything that affects her except getting a new cohost. I think she’s blowing it way out of proportion.

      • Colette says:

Well if she feels so disrespected by ABC than maybe this is a good time to move on when her contract expires.

      • holly hobby says:

No they forced Regis to retire. He was unceremoniously shown the door. So was Kathie Lee. Stop throwing Regis under the bus.

  10. QQ says:

That sh!t is finna be more akward than me at my cousin’s wedding last night when Im literally not talking to 5-6 Family Members just cause im fed up of them and them trying to act like we cool in public, fronting for the Guests LMMFAO

    • Snowflake says:

      Lol

    • antipodean says:

Ha, ha, QQ, I would love to have been a fly on the wall while you were showing your fronting rellies just what their insincere nonsense is all about! If I had had a few G&T’s inside me I would have joined you in the fray! People like that are just not worth your time or trouble, family or not. I hope you gave them the sharp edge of your tongue! If there’s one thing I cannot abide it’s insincerity. It’s funny how these things always surface at weddings, funerals etc! I can’t be doing with it either, good on you, QQ.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Haha. Family gatherings are always something else. Lol

  11. Jayna says:

She was always coming back on Tuesday. I never believed the total boycott rumor, because all the other reports were that she was coming back.

I believe she was incapable of sitting by his side while she was furious with him and the network by being so blindsided and she needed to make the network come to her with assurances and so took a few days. Because this was all about more than Michael. It definitely looks like they are setting up GMA to be longer in the morning, and they way they treated Kelly, telling her the minute the world knows and having to go out and do a show with Michael, showed her that most likely her show was on the chopping block and they couldn’t care less. So why should she make it easy for them? She shook it up, and the network had to do damage control for their blunder in how this went down.

And I imagine he will be there for a month and then be gone, and she will have Anderson Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris and Andy Cohen and others help fill in.

    • The Original G says:

I agree that this is about much more that Michael. But her show is not inviolate. There is no compelling reason that it needs to go on in it’s current format. TV is way overloaded with lifestyle, celeb show talking heads.

It’s not about making it easy for them, it’s about using her power to make her next move the most beneficial for her. She needs to look forward here, not look back to replicate an old format.

  12. Clare says:

I’m totally team Kelly on this one. I do understand that perhaps she doesn’t have the ‘right’ to know when a co worker is leaving…BUT I think it’s common courtesy to inform key co workers, or people who work in the same team, of a colleagues departure before it is announced to the rest of the business.

For example, if you’re quitting your job you legally/officially probably only need to tell HR in writing – but if you work in a team wher e your presence closely impacts other people, surely you, or their manager, would give a heads up before the whole company is notified?

    • holly hobby says:

She got 4 months to find a suitable replacement. He’s not leaving today. She was unprofessional and blew this out of proportion.

  13. iGotNothin says:

Let’s be real. She’s not just pissed because Michael is leaving and didn’t tell her. She’s mad because he got a better opportunity and much more after being on HER show for such a short time. Call a spade a spade.

    • Miss M says:

Exactly! I have never heard a co-worker had the obligation to tell his/her co-workers he/she was negotiating to leave a job and get another. There is a very good article on linkedin about “when your co-worker thinks he/she is your boss” (something like that).

    • Magnoliarose says:

Of course that is part of it. Live is the end of the road for her most likely.

  14. Bridget says:

Lady gets news at work that makes her upset and take a couple of sick days to cool down. Will come back to work after her scheduled vacation.

  15. Ali says:

She could’ve taken the high road, congratulated him and wished him well and all of that, and then be all mad and pissy in private. Instead she made herself look like an a$$hole. Simple as that.

  16. Giddy says:

I never watch this show, but you can bet that I will on Tuesday. The ratings should be sky high! Will they discuss it? Will she say that she was devastated because she adores him? Will they address all the rumours that they really don’t get along anyway? If so, I’m looking for a creepy big hug while they tell us how untrue that is. If I were in her shoes my hurt feelings would definitely be stuffed down and I would just concentrate on my lovely 15 million dollars. Ha!

  17. PJ says:

Though I’ve liked Kelly since I was a little girl and would come home after school and watch ‘All My Children’ with my mom in which she was the rebellious Haley Chandler (Lol), and I LOVED her cameo last year on ‘Broad City’, I’ve never gotten into her morning show. That being said, you bet your sweet ass I will be home, planted on my couch and GLUED to my television on Tuesday morning! God. I.Can’t.Wait.

All that being said, wouldn’t it have been a much better move on her part to come back from vacation on schedule, pretend that she knew about Michael’s move all along (she would have had days to corroborate a story), act like it was no sweat off her back then privately lose her sh*t all she wanted on everyone involved BEHIND the scenes? Kelly has always seemed so calculating when it comes to projecting a certain image…I’m actually shocked that she didn’t do it that way and instead let everyone in on the fact that she was made a fool of…

  18. jezmyopinion says:

Too many unemployed that would love to sit and run their mouth and earn millions per year.
    So, suck it up buttercup.

  19. Cricket says:

Saw the photo of her house in the Hamptons… it looks just like the house used in Something’s Gotta Give with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson.. so jealous of that house! It’s beautiful!!

I think she played this wrong and was threatened that if she didn’t come back and doesn’t behave when she does come back, she would be in violation of her contract and sued by the studio.. I know I wouldn’t want to lose that beautiful house and $15mm pay day.. Reality check turns things around pretty quick.

I think she overreacted if this was just about Michael leaving the show but if she got the vibes that the show was going to be cancelled in Sept when he leaves and he knew about that in advance of her being told then I would understand her response and be total agreement. But looks like this Live with… show will sputter on for at least another season. I read her contract is only for one more season. Her biggest challenge will be what she does afterwards besides commercials. Her relevance will be flushed when this show ends.

  20. Margo S. says:

Clearly a PR Stunt. Well done.

  21. l says:

I like Kelly. I hope this all works out for her in the end.

15 million, that’s all I have to say. To make 15 million and have the nerve to pout or stomp your foot. She has a dream job and paycheck.

It does look like Kelly leaked the “blindsided” story to TMZ. She thought screaming she was blindsided would get her more power and money but how can you be blindsided if Michael doesn’t leave till September? She is delusional. Her antics only made her look weak and unprofessional. ABC should and will not forget this. I still can’t believe that someone working on a “live” show would make this so public. She created a soap opera out of all of this and she lost big time in so many ways. It’s crazy how money hungry and fake she seems to be.

Oh Kelly… The show used to be Regis & Kathy Live….. Just sayin…..

Doesn’t sound like any of the leaks were coming from her though and that she is planning on returning after her SCHEDULED vacation.

I really think I’m missing how she is being unprofessional by taking a vacation, fine she called in sick and that isn’t great and probably embarrassed the network but they embarrassed her so not really the end of the world. And if ABC hadn’t had constant leaks it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
