Susan Sarandon asked to describe her relationship with Bowie: ‘absolutely not’

I had the chance to thumb through People Magazine’s “Most Beautiful” issue and it’s full of interesting quotes from the celebrities on beauty, body image and things like makeup and hair. Unfortunately they’re all the best quotes culled from older interviews so there’s nothing we can really report on.

People also has videos of some of this year’s “most beautiful” women without makeup and with hair that looks like they just rolled out of bed. Cover star Jennifer Aniston didn’t participate in the no makeup video despite the fact that it was sponsored by Aveeno. (I guess we’ve already seen her without makeup in Cake.) Susan Sarandon, Priyanka Chopra, Zendaya and Sarah Silverman were among the women who were interviewed makeup free and I have to give them credit for it. I hate going out without makeup. Sarandon was asked for “the most beautiful thing about her life today” and she turned it around to make it about her kids. “The fact that my kids are happy and healthy and pursuing passions that they have.” That was just inspired and nice to hear.

Sarandon was also on Watch What Happens Live last week, where host Andy Cohen tries to get tipsy celebrities to dish. Cohen asked Sarandon about her relationship with David Bowie, around the time they did The Hunger together with Catherine Deneuve in 1983. She’s admitted dating Bowie, calling him “extraordinary,” and that it was an “interesting period,” but has not gone into details about it. She told a call-in listenere that she wasn’t going to talk about Bowie but then she did gush about him in general terms.

When a caller asked if she would describe her love affair with Bowie, the 69-year-old actress replied, “Absolutely not.”

“I didn’t know you had a love affair with David Bowie,” show host Andy Cohen admitted.

“Oh, god, where have you been?” Sarandon jokingly responded.

When Cohen asked about the kind of man Bowie was, again, the actress only had good things to say about him.

“Oh, brilliant, gracious, funny, private but really smart. I loved the way that he just kept changing up. He didn’t stick to one thing,” she said. “Pretty brave. I mean, when I knew him, he was pretty stable, as opposed to early days maybe. By ‘The Hunger,’ he was very productive. Found a great love in [wife] Iman.”

Naturally, Cohen followed up by asking if Sarandon “ever [smoked] it up with David Bowie” to which she replied, “Yeah.” Then she gave Cohen a high-five.

Bowie didn’t meet Iman until 1990, many years later. I like how Sarandon kind of deferred to Iman in her response, that was the right thing to do. I would say that Sarandon is a smart cookie and that she knows how to phrase things so that she doesn’t get misinterpreted, but that hasn’t been the case recently. On this one she got it right.

This looks awkward right?

Well, I was holding my breath because she has been brimming with stupid lately, but that was a nice response.

Haha. I don’t know why I’ve got a mental picture of you literally holding your breath but I do. I also don’t know why the mental image has me giggling either but there you have it.

Susan always has been a strong woman, the kind that keeps her secrets in tact….something that is rare….a Kardashian she is not. Makeup free? Zendaya is a child and shouldn’t look much different with or without makeup.

  3. Talie says:

I wish she had supported Bernie without going so far off the rails…I feel like she and Tim and Rosario Dawson have gone cuckoo.

    • Gg says:

Are you saying she is a Bernie bro!?! LOL!

IMO she rocks! An amazing example of a strong, bright, talented, and sexy woman.

    • CK says:

Shailene Woodley joined that club this morning by comparing Bernie to MLK and Nelson Mandela. Honestly, at this point Mark Ruffalo and Nina Turner should be the only BS surrogates that get to speak without a script.

  4. Bettyrose says:

Don’t judge me but I would love to hear salacious details about their relationship. But I also totally respect her discretion, an her nod to Iman was nice.

    • Carol says:

Oh me too, love the details! But I’m glad Sarandon remained respectful to Bowie and his wife

  5. Embee says:

Good answers! And I think her answers pretty well fall in line with her perspective, i.e. her relationship with a subsequently married and know deceased man is inappropriate gossip fodder. Also, the respect she shows his recently widowed bride is likely genuine.

  6. JudyK says:

I’m not a huge fan of SS but do give her credit for having some class and some mystery about herself and applaud her for being discreet. She looks lovely in the very top picture.

  7. Tig says:

I do think one of the joys as you get older if you have kids is to see them happy and pursuing their interests. And agree with earlier poster- Rosario Dawson has really gone off the rails.

  8. kri says:

Vintage Bowie stories awwww. I will miss him every day. Can you imagine-“Oh yes, I had an affair with David”…sigh.

She talked about their relationship on Maron last week. He sounded pretty extraordinary.

THE HUNGER is an excellent film.

The fact that you consistently block me is a testiment to how insecure you are.

  14. Amanda G says:

I love how she respectively brought his widow into the discussion. Susan is a classy lady.
