Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton at the Met Gala: adorable or not so much?

FFN_CHP_MET_CostumeGala_050216_52042167

This year’s Met Gala included honorary co-chairs Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada. Ghesquière is currently doing terrible things with Louis Vuitton, and a surprising number of women chose Vuitton for the Met Gala. I have to think… if I was forced to chose between Vuitton, Prada and Chanel, at this point, I would probably pick Prada. But I’m not a fashionable celebrity, which is how so many chose Vuitton. Alicia Vikander was one of the first ladies on the Met Gala carpet, and she was one of the first disappointments. As many said on Twitter last night, it’s like three ugly dresses fighting with each other in one terrible dress. The shoes don’t help matters either. Alicia didn’t bring her boyfriend either – she was the official date of Ghesquière.

Miranda Kerr also chose Louis Vuitton. This too seems like two meh dresses put together. But… I feel like this is the most interesting of all the Vuitton dresses we’ve seen.

I am so NOPE on Michelle Williams in this LV. And it’s not even about the dress, which is too boring and basic to even be offensive. It’s about the HAIR. Why in God’s name would you show up to the Met Gala with this hair?!

And finally, Grimes in LV. I’m constantly confusing Grimes with Halsey, but I won’t do that anymore. Grimes looks like Kurt Cobain. Halsey looks like Gozer the Gozerian.

Dude, look at the cheekbones of the guy behind Miranda Kerr in the first photo! (right side)
    DAMN!!!

  2. Calcifer says:

Lovely Alicia. Not sure about the fit of the dress, but it’s playful and she has the confidence and good posture to pull it off. Poor Michelle Williams though. She looks like someone who has escaped from a prisoners’ camp in a science fiction novel.

    • Jenny says:

Nearly spit out my tea laughing, Calcifer! Poor poor Michelle indeed. Nobody looks good in such short bangs, nobody. And combined with the rest of the hair cut it makes her look like she was also lobotomized in said prisoner’s camp…

    • Annetommy says:

These are all terrible. I wonder what the combined cost was to make such good looking women look so awful.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I actually like Alicia’s dress and shoes, and I am not a fan of hers. This is leagues better than that boring sh!t she wore to the Oscars. I don’t like her hair and makeup though. She never does anything interesting with that.

      • mee says:

agree- i like her dress and shoes as very fitting with a futuristic robotic look. she does robots well; she has the perfect, cute body to play one.

i loved the combat boots on the women! great contrast w/the dresses.

michelle williams looks emaciated. she needs a few pounds and longer bangs.

    • bobslaw says:

Love Alicia. She looks like a kicky little cyborg. Very cute!

    • drnotknowitall says:

      I love Alicia’s dress. I don’t know why. But I love it

    • ladysussex says:

Literally lol’d Calcifer! I love Alicia’s fresh faced beauty, but the dress was underwhelming. And Michelle. Poor Michelle. To me she looks like a teen who escaped from a treatment facility. It’s the hair, I think.

  3. paolanqar says:

She’s always had a quirky style and it suits her. She looks as if she’s having fun in it and she looks cute.

    • Samtha says:

I agree. It’s a different look, but she pulls it off and looks pretty cute. I like that she tried something different.

  4. roxane says:

Why Alicia is wearing six dresses in one ?!! I like the makeup and the combat boots but the dress is a disaster. At least she had fun.

  5. Emilee says:

I liked it, it’s fun and she always seems so thrilled to be wearing Ghesquière’s creations. Who wouldn’t? Frankly she was the MVP of the awards season. Her SAG dress, her Oscar gown — stunning! And the one she wore to the Critics Choice Awards was lovely, too. I am jealous of her contract with LV as she gets everything before everyone else and gets it for zero dollars. LV >>> J Law’s Dior nightmare clothes.

  6. D says:

All of the dresses are pretty awful and those boots…no, just no. I never understand Alicias fashion choices, her makeup looks nice though (I’m judging while wearing sweatpants).

  7. Ally8 says:

OMG, that dress on Alicia Vikander looks like it came from the last episode of Project Runway, where they had one hour to re-hash a couple of old dresses into a new one.

I understand they’re desperately trying to find something ‘new’ in fashion, but this just looks like amateur hour on a big fashion house budget.

And re: Michelle Williams, I am really the first to type “bangs trauma” on this Celebitchy thread? I’m pro-bangs generally, but those ones do look traumatized.

  8. vauvert says:

Oh my Lord, they just took remnants left on the cutting floor and assembled dresses for Alicia and Miranda and Grimes (who is she??). So I guess they interpreted the theme as “dressing post-apocalypse in recycled tatters”.

The navy top of Michelle’s outfit would be OK for a summer evening on the Croisette, with some white palazzo pants, but this styling for this event is tragic. I never find her hair or makeup particularly good but this is… sad. (Maybe her hairstylist came down with food poisoning at the last minute and that’s all Michelle could do by herself.)

    • Sea Dragon says:

+1 on everything in the first paragraph. Never heard of Grimes either until now. I just watched three of her videos and was thoroughly unimpressed.

  9. roxane says:

She should had come as Ava, bald with silver body-suit.

  10. Kristen says:

Why are all the women wearing combat boots? Did someone send around a memo?

(I don’t dislike combat boots, but someone must’ve declared, “These are in style now!” or something; it’s too big of a coincidence that they all decided to wear them to the Met Gala out of nowhere).

    • Norman Bates's Mother says:

Combat boots are the basis of the new LV shoe collection and the entire outfits here, incl. shoes, are parts of the look created by the designer. So they didn’t just get to randomly choose their foot-wear from other collections. Only Miranda got to wear a different type of shoe, but hers also look like they were designed to match that dress.

  11. Renee says:

Alicia went for the ice skater meets beer wench look.

  12. Lola says:

Designers should be shamed for all above dresses.
There is a difference between breaking the mold and breaking the Art of Design basics.

    • helena says:

agreed. there is something called creativity and art. however, this is not this. this is lack of imagination, wannabe different and fresh, failing at being different and fresh, lack of harmony and a visual attack at any person who appreciates aesthetics.

  13. lilacflowers says:

Every element is Alicia’s dress is awful but she looks so happy, she almost manages to pull it off. The others all look like they’ve been through Hell.

  14. Diana says:

This whole post is tragic bye.

  15. mellie says:

Ugh to all these, but Alicia is just such a cute girl. Just adorable.

  16. OriginallyBlue says:

Blah. The dress, hair, makeup, everything looks fug. She has nice legs though and seems happy in that terrible dress.

  17. Karen says:

It’s a black-tie gala requesting drama and costumes…. cute cocktail dresses are underwhelming compared

  18. AG-UK says:

No jeeez. And one important question on most of these photos WHY are they all soooo shiny…

  19. SloaneY says:

So ugly. All of them. The dresses, not the women.

    Alicia looks 10 years old.

    • Tandy says:

I was just coming to say this. And I’m so over grown women who deliberately style themselves to look like 10 year old girls. It’s creepy. And yes, Alicia does this.

      • Roxane says:

I will never understand this kind of comments, you make it sound as if she was dress in some kind of lolita fantaisie, she isn’t the whole look is more Wonder Woman or gladiator with those combat boots. I just don’t see it.

  20. Meee4 says:

Alicia association with Vuitton needs to end now. She just doesn’t wear their clothes well or they have done her a great disservice by always putting her in crap. All of the other Vuitton looks last night were pretty awful as well.

  21. Jayna says:

I must be the only person on the planet that thought Alicia looked adorable in her outfit and shoes, even though I agree that it isn’t Met Ball gala wear, which I was just complaining about in another thread about a lot of these outfits last night. So I just contradicted myself.

  22. Size Does Matter says:

Michelle Williams had that same haircut during Dawson’s Creek, the College Years. It was awful in 2002 and is also awful now.

  23. Rae says:

    U.G.L.Y

That is one design house I would never, if I was a celebrity, get into a brand ambassador contract with. Hideous.

  24. Locke Lamora says:

Alicia’s dress looks a bit steampunk-ish, so it might fit the theme, but it’s hideous.
    Miranda’s dress is okay.

  25. lucy2 says:

Alicia looks like a child there. Ariana Grande is going to be pissed she stole her thing.

    These are mostly hilariously bad.

    • ichsi says:

Right? I know I know, I’m being SUPER mean to Alicia again but why do I think it’s quite effed up that the most positive reaction she’s getting for it is ‘adorable’? She’s a 27 year old woman who’s styled to look like a teenager, at an event where actual teenagers are styled to look like sex goddesses. I’ve been complaining about this the whole award season but I think what LV is doing to her is borderline creepy. Yes she has a baby face but that’s no reason to emphasize it and push the whole sexed-up Lolita thing. The rest of dresses are awful too.

      • Minxx says:

        I think she’s deliberately styled as a teen. It’s a bit creepy, I agree.

  26. Diana B says:

I like Alicia’s dress. It’s flirty and fun. The rest are just ugly, ugly, ugly.

  27. mp says:

this is concern trolly but I’ll say it: Michelle’s fashion is not the only thing that looks bad, she looks worryingly bad. She used to have such a full face.

Here is a picture of her from 2013, does she not look totally different to anyone else?

    http://www.marieclaire.co.uk/news/celebrity/543077/michelle-williams-spotted-holding-hands-with-artist-dustin-yellin.html

    • bobslaw says:

What’s she up to lately? She used to be all over the place with interesting Indie movies. I miss her and her better hair.

  28. Lambda says:

Alicia looks like a manga character, which I love.

  29. Bridget says:

The wearers don’t “choose” to wear LV, they’re there as Ghesquiere’s guests. Some because they’re representing the brand, some because they have personal relationships with Ghesquiere, and likely one or two were matched up, as each celebrity goes as a fashion house’s guest. And then they’re essentially given something to wear. There’s some work in conjunction with stylists, but it’s not the Oscars where the star and stylist are in control.

    • Dara says:

If I had been a guest of LV, I would have been supremely disappointed/pissed at having to wear any of those looks. Small consolation I suppose, at least no one LV guest looked especially better or worse than the others – I thought they were all hideous, and would have gotten the designer kicked off Project Runway in the first round.

  30. sauvage says:

WHY OH WHY is Alicia Vikander’s make-up so underdone even in combination with THAT BUSY A DRESS? Would it really have hurt to put some bold lipstick on her for once? How about some serious smoky eye? I think the dress is awful, but at least the look could have been Alicia Vikander wearing an awful dress insted of what we got, which was an awful dress wearing Alicia Vikander.

  31. Mixtape says:

I know it’s too soon to reference the Cosby Show with nostalgia, but the minute I saw AV’s dress, all I could think of was that “designer” shirt Denise made for Theo.

  32. Betti says:

I actually love this dress on Alicia – she suits it and wears it well thou the make up lets it down a bit, could have popped a bit more. Miranda’s was just urgh.

  33. kri says:

All Vikander’s look is missing is Wonder Woman’s diadem and bracelets. WTF.

  34. tacos and tv says:

All of them look bad. Alicia needs to wear some makeup. I love the fresh face look, but girl.. you are at the met gala! step yo game up, please! Miranda Kerr should be arrested for not calling the police on whoever brought this ensemble to her. No! Michelle Williams has lost a ton of weight. I shouldn’t comment on someone’s body, but wow. Also, she needs a deep condition on that hair and a gown that says “hi, remember me?” not a dress that says “I’m crashing the met.”

  35. rudy says:

I loved Alicia’s dress and shoes. They totally work together and she manages to look gorgeous in that weird dress and somehow makes the patchy dress work.

  36. what's inside says:

The original Ex Machina and somebody screwed her look up like this — that should be a hanging offense. As for the other gals – more tragedy. It was almost like a somebody was doing drugs when the designs were drawn.
