Blake Lively in Burberry at the Met Gala: stunning or poorly styled?

wenn23817389

I’m still sort of shocked that out of all of the potential (British) models and actresses Christopher Bailey could have chosen, he ended up going with an American celebrity: Blake Lively. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that Bailey probably wanted to make a big statement and this Burberry gown is a big statement, even more so because he put it on someone known for being a Fashion Girl, like Blake. While I love this dress – truly and completely love it – I don’t think it has anything to do with the theme. It’s just a beautiful statement gown and it looks great on Blake. My one qualm is that I think Blake’s jewelry choices are not the best for the gown. I feel like it should have been rubies or diamonds, not coral. Also, she barely looks pregnant here, right?

Naomie Harris also got to wear Burberry. I love Naomie, but this dress is a snooze.

I didn’t expect to love Karlie Kloss’s Met Gala look, but here we are. Karlie wore Brandon Maxwell and I thought she looked STUNNING. My only disappointment was that she looked so much cooler with the coat/cape thing as she traveled to the Met Gala, and once she took it off to pose on the carpet, the look was not as special.

Did…. Did Blake give birth? She doesn’t even look a little bit pregnant, and she was very obviously showing a month or so ago. I hope it’s not anything awful :-/

    • anon says:

Well there were rumors that she used a surrogate for her last pregnancy but who knows. This is why I don’t like glorifying celebs bodies post pregnancy, we don’t know the how’s or whys.

      • Goats on the Roof says:

Were there really rumors of surrogacy? Pretty silly if so. Not only did Blake have a legit-looking bump the last go round, her face changed, and she let her roots grow in to avoid hair dye. Not to mention she has posted pics on IG about breastfeeding.

    • Michelle says:

You can see a ittle bit of a belly in one pic. I think she’s still only about 16-20 weeks along so while she’s showimg, it’s still managable. She may be just wearing spanx to hide it, which is uncomfortable but doable. She didn’t reveal with James until the third trimester and while she got outed this time, she may be trying to cover it up until she can do a spctacular belly-reveal.

      • Somegirl says:

I actually had to go to a gala for work in November (baby was due in early Feb.) & wore a similarly designed gown- high waist, tight bustl, flowing skirt, same style neckline. It was great at hiding the pregnancy. Looking at the pictures you can’t tell I was pregnant in a lot of them, and in regular clothes I had a very discernible bump. I think it’s just a great style and cut for a pregnant lady.

I’ll also add that I got mine on mega clearance at Nordstrom Rack for $16… That’s totally unrelated, but it was probably the best shopping deal I ever found!

  2. Lou says:

Keep that cape, Karlie. Wear it EVERYWHERE.

  3. Sam says:

She tends to hide her pregnancy really well. As for the dress…theme or not it looks absolutely stunning and Blake looks fantastic. She is wearing that dress is well. I guess maybe it was refreshing to see someone not drape themselves in tin foil. And I make that statement for everyone who looked great but didn’t stick with the theme.

    • Melodycalder says:

I love Blake’s dress but it would have been way better last year, the Alice in China year

  4. Jegede says:

    Karlie Kloss looked amazing.

What the heck happened to Blake Lively’s bump?

  5. paolanqar says:

Blake’s makeup is dreadful. I can’t see her baby bump though. Did the dress hide it so well?

I still don’t get the hype for Karlie Kloss. The smugness on her face drives me up the wall.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Whenever I see someone posting about a person looking smug, I can’t help but think, “Maybe it’s just her face?” And yeah, that just looks like Karlie’s face to me.

Sometimes I think people use smug to justify a dislike for a person.

    • Bridget says:

If the dress was made custom for her, I’m guessing that the bodice ends where her bump begins. She definitely looks pregnant to me.

  6. vauvert says:

Blake’s Burberry dress is fantastic. I love it. (Her hairstyle needs to be ashamed f itself and the earrings are way.too.much but that dress… wow!) Also absolutely LOVE Naomie’s dress, I think it is gorgeous.

I think Karlie’s cape was beautiful. The dress though, not so much. Why are side cutouts a thing? I really, really hate them – I don’t find them even remotely elegant, they interrupt a dress and distract from a person’s face, it’s just… ugh.

    • Nike says:

I like Naomie’s dress, too. It’s the first today, that I saw, and thought, “Wow, that’s lovely.”

      Blake’s earrings are too much.

    • Boo says:

“interrupt the dress”…thank you! I was grasping to explain to myself why I was not enthralled with this dress, though it is interesting. But that’s exactly it, as you said – it interrupts the dress.

  7. delorb says:

Naomie Harris is NEVER boring. That stare of hers is everything. I loved Karlie’s dress and coat. If you look like that, you wear what she wore, LOL.

    • Locke Lamora says:

      I love Naomi’s dress.

Blake’s dress is really ugly? Is it just me? It looks like a Marchesa.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

It isn’t just you, Locke Lamora. To me, there are too many layers, and each has its own thing going on, which competes with the other layers rather than complimenting them.

    • Magpie says:

I really like this dress. Hate the neck piece, hair and make up zzzzzzz, but do really love the dress. Could have elevated it with some more dramatic hair.

  8. Zadie says:

I always say that Karlie is one of the few models out of the new crop who has that “striking” factor that the supermodels had back in the 80’s. Blake looks gorgeous but completely out of theme.

  9. Greenieweenie says:

Well, haute couture is pretty much the definition of fashion a manus….manum? Mani? Blake’s gown looks embroidered, and I actually love those earrings.

Maybe Anna Wintour would have better luck getting people to dress for the theme if she eschewed Latin words.

  10. mellie says:

Blake looks pretty hot here…but the earrings…ewww. Karlie nailed it. That cape!

  11. Dani2 says:

I love Naomie but this look isn’t doing anything for me, Karlie’s dress is amazing though.

  12. Jayna says:

That gown is stunning on Blake. The earrings a huge no.

  13. Nancy says:

I actually like Blake’s dress. But whoah she went heavy on the makeup..

    • Prince Valiant says:

At least the make up it is not shiny/oily, like the majority of the women present. The hairdo is fantastic when seen from behind. I am surprised nobody wore a metallic Courreges-style mini dress.

      • Boo says:

Yeah I thought Claire Danes looked very unfortunate in the face because her makeup was so oily looking. With that dress too, not good, IMO of course.

I don’t understand how they don’t get makeup all over themselves, their dates, their clothes, other people, when it’s so wet …and it looks like it feels gross. I still haven’t figured out how they’re doing it either, making their faces look that oily. It’s not a good look anyhow IMO.

  14. Mimz says:

Loved her look, makeup is a bit harsh and hairstyle a bit too severe, but overall, she looks super sweet. I think it’s an illusion because of the “fitted bodice” aspect of her dress, but I think her bump is just concealed underneath.
Karlie ‘s coat is DIVINE, and it’s a shame it was covering up that mess of cutouts. that dress would have been so much more chic if it hat the same silhouette but instead of the cutouts, have some sort of contrast paneling there, maybe with a different fabric, texture…
I love Karlie, she’s beautiful and smart. But the dress is a no-no.

  15. OriginallyBlue says:

What? I love Naomie’s dress. Blake’s looks nice, but the hair and earrings are too much, but she seems to be a big fan of big chunky accessories. That cape is gorgeous. I want it.

  16. Karen says:

    The theme was not robots.

It was hand vs machine, and how fashion changed due to sewing machines/technology. So I think Blake’s (hand?) embroidered dress actually works. Maybe in a sea of silver its easy to miss the point.

    • Sam says:

THIS! I think people thought if you weren’t dressed in aluminum or you didn’t have some sort of technology thing you “missed” the theme. But yea I just looked up how Blake’s dress was made and if you read the official theme description from the Met Gala she is actually on point with the theme.

    • Jayna says:

Exactly. I was beginning to think I didn’t get it.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I liked it too and yes, and those how stayed away from the “metallic machine” theme were like a breath of fresh air.

    • teacakes says:

honestly, we can try to handwave its dullness all we want but the Met Gala is supposed to be about taking risks and being experimental, not showing up in a dress that could be worn to any charity gala at any time. Or to a movie premiere.

This dress? Is pretty, but utterly basic. Claiming it’s the best of the night is like claiming Starbucks is amazing coffee.

  17. leigh says:

Blake’s dress is a Blanche Devereaux dress.

  18. Rae says:

Blake’s makeup, hair and jewellry choices ruin it here. The dress is lovely, the more I look at it, but overall I am not loving it. Perhaps I would be more open on any other night, but the dress doesn’t fit the theme at all.

Also, Karlie’s body is BANGING! I would DIE for her body.

  19. Jayna says:

I love Naomie’s gown on her.

  20. QQ says:

Oatmeal Girl might be on point themewise but she just look like this strwberry Oatmeal im eating rn in thing I couldn’t make up it i tried.

Karlie “never my supermodel” Kloss looks great WITH THE CAPE ONLY

  21. Kate says:

I really like Blake lively but I am going to just say that this partially opened mouth, tongue between the teeth smile is bad. She is beautiful and has a nice smile when she really smiles. I hate the dress and the hair and the make up so much. But I still like Blake. A rare misstep for her.

  22. SilkyMalice says:

I want to see the back of Karlie’s dress, and I can’t find photos anywhere. I think she looks stunning.

Blake still looks pregnant to me. I like her dress, but her lipstick is harsh.

  23. vanessa says:

blake dress is stunning but the hairstyle, makeup and earrings are a big no. such a shame

  24. Shutterbug99 says:

Was Blake’s pregnancy confirmed? I’ll have to take a look through the archives. To me, she doesn’t look pregnant here whatsoever, although I thought she looked pregnant -and looked to be hiding a possible bump – in those on-set photos that surfaced a while back.

  25. Bridget says:

Total miss for Blake. The dress needed to be on someone less orange.

  26. Zuzus girl says:

Blake looks lovely except for those awful earrings and the make up is a bit harsh.

  27. serena says:

Blake’s dress is stunning, but I hate how they did her hairstyle, make-up and accessories.

  28. KiddVicious says:

Deborah Kerr popped into my head when I saw Blake’s dress. There must be an old photo somewhere with Deborah Kerr in a similar dress.

I think Blake looks pregnant, her waist is usually much smaller.

  29. HappyMom says:

Wow-I’m clearly in the minority because I HATE this dress-the color, the style, everything about her look is awful.

    • teacakes says:

same. Blake Lively may be a nice person but all this promotion of her as a fashion girl is totally Emperor’s New Clothes because she has a way of making even expensive clothing look like it came from a mall store and is made of flammable synthetics.

I can’t believe we’re praising this – THIS! – as one of the good dresses of the night, it’s an utter snooze and the hair+makeup+accessories choices are all wrong.

    • mee says:

yes. she dresses fine, if you’re 16 yrs old. but she’s not.

    • Samoonta says:

Gah thank you, we are indeed in the minority. I’m not a fan of Blake Lively at all between her general easy go to haute fashion choices (how is it at all your look if you exactly copy the runway?) and also her typical golden CA blonde look is boring as hell. Also, try not to get married on a slave plantation? But I don’t know if I’d like that dress on ANYONE. It looks all over the place to me, and very unflattering. But her hairstyle and harsh makeup and weird jewelry choice just cements it.

  30. HeyThere! says:

Blake looks great. Naomi looks great. For some reason I’m not digging the dramatic cut out dress on Karlie.

  31. sauvage says:

I think Blake Lively’s dress would have been more befitting with the Chinese theme last year, or was it already two years ago?

  32. kri says:

I adore Naomie’s dress. That fabric is sumptuous. Blake Lively-I just feel nothing. She is always a pretty picture. Karli with the cape yes. Karlie without. NO. Who applied that tanner? An actual tanner? Not necessary.

  33. ReineDidon says:

I agree Karlie Kloss is the definition of a supermodel. That body is insane. I don’t like her dress (has been worn so many times by so many people for so long) but her cape-coat is fashion perfection.

Blake is clearly pregnant. The flowy material under her belly hides it but in profile pictures you clearly see a bump. And I think that she carries herself so well that even though make up or jewelery are not in point, she still looks pretty classy. I love that about her.

  34. B says:

I think the dress and how she styled it were super tacky

Its like a hybrid between Marchesa and Versace

    • teacakes says:

she always looks like that tbh, her style can basically be summed up as having a grand total of one purpose – i.e. to show off her body. There’s no flair or imagination there.

  35. Lucy says:

Are you kidding? If anything, Blake was probably one of the few people who actually respected the theme. Her gown is almost entirely handmade.

    • Sam says:

Exactly. As Lainey said just because you dressed in aluminum doesn’t mean you fit the theme but most people didn’t even read the description of the theme. Blake’s dress is one of the few that actually fit the bill.

      • Lucy says:

Kanye is the one that made me laugh the most. He calls himself the Greatest Thing That Has Ever Happened to Fashion, yet couldn’t be bothered to read the actual description of the theme of what’s probably the biggest fashion event of the year, beyond its title. Same goes for most people except maybe Blake, Zoe Saldana and Lorde. EDIT: And Beyoncé!

    • Jegede says:

      @Lucy-

The dress is OK. I like the colour more than anything

But I’m loving how pressed/angry its making some who don’t like it, that others have the audacity to like it!!!

  36. tacos and tv says:

Yes to Karlie. Her body and that dress on ridic. Love it. Black Lively is a no. But she is always a no. Why? because she reminds me of oatmeal and there is nothing anyone can do to oatmeal to make me want to eat it. I don’t know why, I hear it’s great, but no. Same thing for blake. I used to think the same thing about her husband.. and I still do. Even after Deadpool. Actually no, I take that back, I think him in that mask running around, made me like him better. So, maybe if black did a masked look… I may sing a different tune.

  37. Jh says:

Her hair and makeup makes me irrationally angry. So unflattering and uninspired. Yuck. Ruined a beautiful dress.

  38. Magnoliarose says:

I don’t hate Blake’s dress but the styling is bad. She seems to have this problem all of the time. I don’t think she’s ever been styled well and as a fashion girl she doesn’t cut it.
Karlie’s cape is great but the dress is just ok.
    Naomie is whatever.

    • Bridget says:

Every once in a while she really gets it – the nude Kors look recently was a total home run – but most of Blake’s “fashion girl” cred comes from borrowing outfits Pat Field put together for Gossip Girl. And the current makeup trend of orange undertones is doing Blake no favors here, though she’s in good company there.

This is going to sound mean, but I think this look was a total miss.

  39. escondista says:

I’m pregnant in early 2nd tri and some days my belly pops and some days I can easily zip my pants. Some days my face looks hormonal and pregnant (fuller and shinier) and some days my face is slim and dull.
    I don’t know if that’s common!

  40. lucy2 says:

I think the dress is pretty, but I can’t stand the earrings.
Love the dramatic cape on Karlie’s.

  41. what's inside says:

Blake’s look was just not happening — too heavy on the make-up, the dress was like drapes and a pair of sheer curtains that was draped over her form. Karlie – I think I hate her. How can one woman have all of that going on???? The cape was great, the body to wear a dress with that many cutouts was insane, and her make-up and hair was perfect. Yeah, I am pretty sure that I hate her.

  42. Ramona Q. says:

Please Blake, it’s time to change the orange hair color.

  43. Emilee says:

She has such bad laugh lines for someone so young. Bad skin/genes.
