Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein at the Met Gala: amazing or budget?

wenn23818065

Lupita Nyong’o has done the Met Gala carpet before, to mixed results. Lupita seems to view the Met Gala as an opportunity to do weird/unconventional/amazing things, and last night was no different. She chose a simple enough Calvin Klein gown in a liquid green, a shade of which I can only describe as “metallic seaweed.” The color works on Lupita, the cut works on her, and the dress itself is fine. But Lupita dared to do something unique with the styling: a giant hairpiece that gave her at least a foot and a half of giant hair. I don’t know… I sort of like it?

Emma Watson and Margot Robbie were the other Calvin Klein girls at last night’s Met Gala. Margot is the next big thing, and she’s probably going to be a major star when The Suicide Squad is released. Is this what the next big thing should wear? No. This is a nothing dress. It’s too minimalist and too clean. She looks like she didn’t try at any level. As for Emma’s dress, it was made from entirely recycled materials. While I appreciate that she was doing something different and new, the actual dress and design is super-boring.

I love Lupita’s hair. I hate the dress. The cut is ugly, the colour is ugly, the material is ugly, everythig is ugly.
It’s more suited for an aging show girl.

I like that Emma followed the theme and used recycled materials, but I don’t like the dress.
    Margot looks boring.

    • Diana B says:

They all look boring, hair piece and all.

    • Audrey says:

Lupita’s dress doesn’t fit her right. I don’t know if it’s the cut or the tailoring but it makes her look bigger than she is. It’s just not flattering, honestly.

The hair is fun for this event though and I can get on board with that.

    • Carmen says:

Love Lupita’s dress, the color is great on her, but what color isn’t great on her, and I love the hair. And that skin and those arms… Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Not feeling Emma’s dress at all. It seems lopsided on top.

  2. OriginallyBlue says:

Lupita wins. The hair was a risk, but she looks great and definitely stood out. Also I want her arms.

SERVE ME THIS ELECTRONIC QUEEN OF ZAMUNDA REALNESS LU👏🏾PI👏🏾TA

  4. Alex says:

Lupita is daring and I wish she would cochair a gala. At least she pushes the boundaries. Robbie looks like she didn’t try. Emma’s dress was boring but I love the train

  5. Alix says:

Love Lupita’s dress; dunno that the Marge Simpson ‘do added much to her look.

    • Nancy says:

Lol….that was my first thought when I saw Lupita….Marge Simpson’s long lost sister!

      • Taxi says:

Yep. Hair stack adds nothing attractive. Color is nice but not a good style for LN. She’s flat-chested with a skinny upper body & quite a full lower body (& very round legs.) The shape of this dress accentuates nothing good.

  6. paolanqar says:

Margot Robbie is a great Sofia Vergara impersonator. 😀
Looove Lupita. HEr skin is amazing.

  7. AlmondJoy says:

    Yes yes yes.

There was THE MOST hilarious picture of Nate Parker stopping mid sentence to stare at her booty and it was all over ig and the captions had me cackling like a hyena. He looked mesmerized.

  8. vauvert says:

Liked everything about Lupita’s look and Emma’s eco-fashion was one of the few that actually embraced the real theme. Margot never does it for me even though she is beautiful, and happening, and all that. I know I’m supposed to be bowled over, but I am not.

  9. Jayna says:

Hate Lupita’s hair. Love the gown on her.

  10. Neelyo says:

I thought Watson looked stunning, like a 21st century Sargent painting. And she looked mature without looking like a matron or Real Housewife.

Robbie’s look is boring and unflattering. Cut outs rarely work.

    Love Lupita’s hair.

Emma’s was one of my favorite looks of the night. I don’t think the pics in this post really show all the elements of the dress. The train and slight deconstruction of the skirt overlay worked and modernized a classic look. Plus I am pretty sure those are pants underneath it all. Plus you could tell she felt great in it. Win for me.

Lupita look lovely and the train did look like water flowing behind her. Great color for her.

      • lucy2 says:

I too saw better photos of Emma’s.
I love the skirt of Lupita’s, but not the dress overall.

      • tiny martian says:

I totally agree about Emma, she was my favorite! Love that her look involved recycled materials in keeping with the theme, thought the fit was impeccable, and loved that she wore pants with an enormous kickass train! There were much better pics of her alone, and she looked truly lovely and very mature.

      • Taxi says:

Yes, there are pants under Emma’s dress. In think it’s gorgeous, with a deliberately asymmetrical neckline.

  11. Brea says:

Lupita makes everyone else look like trash, as per usual. 🙂

Emma’s is okay. She’s a really pretty girl but her style is so boring.

Pass on Margot. I used to kind of like her but she doesn’t know how to dress for her body type and always shows up looking like the woman from My Name is Earl. No charisma.

  12. madi says:

I love her hair, so different and fun! I wish mine could be styled this way even though I don’t have any costume galas to attend and it would garner to much attention.

  13. Jenn4037 says:

Loved Lupita’s hair, but are we really goving her a pass on another pastel, lowcut CK dress? Yawn.

Emma looks great as always, but I like the story behind her gown.

  14. Gomez says:

Margot Robbie is so forgettable. Pretty but bland.

Lupita is gorgeous and I like that she takes risks and has a bit of fun at these galas.

I wish Lupita had Hollywood pushing for her as much as Robbie does. She’s altogether more interesting.

  15. ied says:

Met is supposed to be daring and not Oscar savy boring. It’s costume gala.

  16. vanessa says:

Margot’s dress is cute, but she should have worn it at another occasion. Lupita was gorgeous as always and totally nailed the theme but i hated the hair. Emma’s dress was one of the worst look of the night.

  17. K says:

The Met Gala is a place TO DO UNCONVENTIONAL THINGS!!! THIS IS AN EVENT ABOUT FASHION!!!! Lupita understands that!

I swear so many people are boring at these and don’t take risks, this isn’t the Oscars this is a FASHION even celebrating FASHION, and how fashion through its art and vision has changed the world and our culture. The dresses on THIS carpet shouldn’t be safe! They shouldn’t be understandable, they shouldn’t be loved by the masses! Fashion true fashion never is it takes time for the masses to get it.

  18. Wren33 says:

Love the hair. Very Dr. Seuss / chess piece / ancient queen.

  19. Blackwood says:

Lupita’s hair looks like giant anal beads.

  20. sofie says:

Lupita hair looks like what I use to do to my troll doll.

  21. serena says:

I love the idea of Lupita’s look, but her dress seems really made of plastic.
The other two are just zZZZ.

  22. Mikeyangel says:

I dont love Lupita’s hair, but I love the risk she went for. The dress sucks, but she looks great and could wear anything and make IT look good so no hate for it but damn if Claire Danes dress wouldn’t have looked so much better on Lupita. That is the difference, Claire looks great because of the dress, Lupita looks so goddess-like and makes anything she wears look good. No hate to Claire either, I like her quite a bit as an actress-MSCL was very impressionable on me, and she has done some great work since. Lupita has a fashion it girl quality that many don’t.

  23. err says:

Emma looks like she raided Hot Topic :/

  24. Jade says:

I thought Lupita’s gown was pretty great. I have mixed feelings about the hair. I think her hair should be a dramatic afro. Something like Diana Ross.

  25. grace says:

Lupita is just nominated for a Tony! Happy for her

  26. OhDear says:

Oh yikes, Emma’s dress looks awful in these pictures! There were better pictures of it elsewhere, though those photos had a weird romance novel vibe to them. But at least she tried to follow the theme.

Lupita’s hair was interesting and she has the face to pull it off.

  27. vck says:

Wasn’t Margot’s dress also at least made from partly recycled materials?

  28. Zadie says:

I don’t like the dress but Lupita’s hair is glorious, very futuristic and afro-centric if it makes sense. Margot is boring and Emma’s look is a nice change.

    • LAK says:

Definetely African realness. If you look at african fashion mags from the 70s or simply look at tribal hairstyles or modern hairstyles influenced by tribal hairstyles, Lupita’s hairstyle would fit right in.

Infact, my mother probably wore that style back in the day. Very popular in East Africa.

    • Jwoolman says:

Yes, the hair struck me as very sci-fi also. Liked the dress, too.

  29. drnotknowitall says:

Lupita is a stunning woman. But that dress is not at all flattering. Emma looks a mess. I have no idea what the hell she put on.

  30. Bobo says:

The train on Lupita’s dress is so beautiful.

  31. Starkiller says:

Emma needs to lay off the high-concept stuff. Something from Topshop or ASOS would be more her speed.

Lupita looks fine, but why do they always give her such basic stuff? She always elevates it, but just imagine her in Claire Danes’ gown.

  32. kri says:

I thought Margot Robbie was Rebecca Romijn. Has she done something or is it just her make-up? Lupita is lovely. Emma I normally love, but since she seems to be so petite, I think she would look amazing in something really tailored. That was not it.

  33. Miss S says:

I like that Lupita does try different things and seems to have fun with it. Didn’t enjoy the dress but like the material. Watson’s outfit just reinforces the idea people usually have about “green fashion”: boring and awful cut.

  34. tacos and tv says:

Oh Lupita makes me smile. I love that dress and the color looks great on her skin. Emma is basic, so who cares, in my opinion. Margot missed the mark and the point.

  35. Lucy says:

Lupita looks crazy amazing, but Emma is the only one who’s respecting the theme here.

  36. I Choose Me says:

Not sure about Lupita’s dress but I’m loving the hair. Love that she’s never afraid to change it up and take risks. Emma’s outfit is a’ight.

  37. Magnoliarose says:

I love when Lupita is on display. She really brings it even if I don’t always love the style she makes it interesting,

Emma’s idea is great but not the result.
    Snooze Margot. As usual.

  38. Die Zicke says:

Something about the fit of the dress doesn’t look right. Also, I don’t know if the dress and the hair work together. Like, the dress is just a regular sparkly red carpet dress, and the hair is cool and avenge garde. She should have saved the dress for a premiere or something (because the color is very nice on her).

  39. Sunnyawesome says:

At first glance I thought Lupita was unfortunately posed in front of a background topiary aaaand then I scrolled down. She has looked better.
