Katy Perry in velvet Prada at the Met Gala: zombie fug or zombie fab?

wenn23817408

Ah, the Prada girls. Prada was one of the designer co-sponsors, and they chose their ladies very carefully. Too carefully! Katy Perry was obviously the show-piece look from Prada and the result was… um… not great. Think about it: Katy is going to the biggest fashion event of the year, an event her Mean Girl “nemesis” is co-chairing. You would obviously want to look amazing, on-theme, and like you could completely devour Taylor Swift, right? Instead, Katy looks like Maleficent’s budget cousin in a reworked velour tracksuit. And please, Katy: never again bleach your eyebrows. Please.

Jessica Chastain’s Prada was perfectly lovely – this color looks amazing on her and the fabric choice just feels “rich.” That being said, this dress had nothing to do with the theme. And I would have loved to see her do something new/different with her hair.

Speaking of doing something new with her hair, Emma Stone went dramatically darker. Emma has been doing shades of blonde for so long, I forgot what she looks like with darker hair. She looks like Margot Robbie all of a sudden. Her Prada was… okay. It seemed like an out-of-character choice for Emma, honestly. But maybe that’s good, she’s mixing it up.

Katy Perry, a big fat no for everything. Jessica lovely but boring.

    • mellie says:

I agree, that eye makeup is just such a tragedy.

    • whatever says:

I totally disagree! I think this is a COSTUME gala with a theme, and Katy hit it out of the park in terms of that. Chastain’s dress was no on theme and pretty boring. If the goal was “trying to look pretty” it would be the opposite, but that isn’t the theme of the night, to be frank.

      • Kyle says:

I must agree. It’s not a pretty dress ball it’s a costume ball. Katy is on theme with the tech versus dress theme. She looks like she could be the blue opera lady’s sister from Fifth Element. Some of these other celebs just phoned it in which makes me question why they came at all.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Yeah, I love it. It looks very Steampunk. She hit it out of the park.

      • Samtha says:

I agree–would it be good for an award show or something like that? No, but this is about costume and DRAMA, which she brought.

And I say this as someone who can’t stand Katy Perry.

      • Truthie says:

Totally agree here. Fit the theme perfectly and it looks like her styling was taken right from the runway.

    • Magpie says:

Yup, like Jessica but it’s a big yawn like usual.

    • imqrious2 says:

Katy: hahahahahahahaha (pause for breath) ahahahahahahaha!

Jessica: lovely; great fit, color, etc. Could do with a new hairstyle.

Emma: Like the darker hair, but the dress looks like a plain white plunger/column dress with a belt and collar stuck on as an afterthought.

  2. Diana B says:

Jessica Chastain looks lovely. I don’t care she wasn’t on theme she’s just beautiful. Katy P was a mess. Too much going on on that dress; it makes my head hurt.

    • vauvert says:

I adored that gown on Jessica, lovely colour and the silhouette flattered her immensely. Too often she dresses in fugly shapes that do nothing for her amazing figure. I think the detailed hand made lace work tied in the theme.

Katy’s outfit was a nightmare and whoever did that makeup job should not be allowed to coif poodles.
Emma went dark for her current role and I think it suits her. That Amazon type dress is interesting and I like it on her.

      • ichsi says:

Yeah, I read the lace as on theme too. The theme wasn’t “MACHINES” even though a lot of people took it that way. Call me crazy but I kinda like Katy’s outfit. It’s super ugly but therefore intriguing again.

  3. QQ says:

    Torch this post, sorry, nobody

  4. mia girl says:

Call me crazy, but I don’t hate Perry’s dress. The hair and styling forsure – but the dress is dramatic and has some cool details. And sorry, but I prefer it to the budget Forever 21 dress Swift wore.

I think Emma Stone looked great. Not so much because of the dress, but because she looks fit and healthy. For a while, she was looking a little gaunt.

    • CaliKush says:

      Agree 1000%

    • Jayna says:

I don’t hate the gown either. l really ove the drama of it in that photo. The hair and makeup is horrible. Even if she kept her hair and did beautiful makeup with it would have made a world of difference. I feel all of what’s going on above the neck is distracting from the grown. It’s a busy gown and doesn’t need all that busyness going on above the neck.

    • als says:

I totally agree about Perry and Emma. Katy knows how to bring the show. This was a gala of the Costumes Institute after all.
Emma’s new body is for a role.

    • ladysussex says:

Dress is ok but I wish she would have lost those stupid bangs (fringe) a long dang time ago. And OMG Emma Stone!! She looks amazing!!!!

      • Miridian says:

I quite like the dress too but the hair and makeup (with the lack of eyebrows) has got a very Effie Trinket vibe to it.

What is with all the shoulder harnesses everyone is wearing?

    • teacakes says:

Same, I love Katy’s dress but not her hair and makeup.

And Emma Stone’s new athletic build looks great in that dress, it would have been wearing her if she was at the size she was two years ago. She’s glowing and healthy, and that’s the best look.

    • CoKatie says:

I agree Miagirl. I can only imagine the HOURS of work that went into creating that dress. The craftsmanship is FANTASTIC. I’m blown away by the detail. The stylist should be taken out back and shot. The focus should have been the DRESS not the freaking eyebrows. Sheesh!

I’m also liking Emma’s dress. A little Kahleesi meets Zena. She wore it well.

    • I Choose Me says:

Yeah. Even though I don’t love it, I think Katy’s gown was appropriately dramatic. I agree with those who say that Emma looks great mainly because she’s put on a few much needed pounds. Her face and figure looks so much better at this weight.

  5. roxane says:

    Emma so dissapointing …

  6. Lora says:

I like katys dress, everything else was just too much :/

  7. Bridget says:

    I love Emma’s.

And one of the things I really enjoy about the Met Gala is seeing who represents what brand. I would never have guessed Katy Perry was so tight with Prada to be their showcase of the night, but then again Prada was the solo co-chair just a handful of years ago and all the big Prada girls came out for that one. This year really looks like LV was the primary centerpiece.

  8. Starryfish says:

Emma looks nice, but I can’t help but be reminded of someone cosplaying as khaleesi.

  9. Kitten says:

I guess I’m the only one who thinks Emma looks incredible. I’m excited to see her in a totally different look instead of her go-to whimsical/retro/twee thing.
She also looks like she put on a few (much-needed) lbs and man, what a difference that makes to her face. I love everything that’s going on with her here.

    • Dani2 says:

I was thinking the same thing about her gaining some weight, she looks WAY better at this weight, I think she was going through some stuff before but it looks like she’s a lot happier these days. I’m happy for her.

    • Lex says:

I think she does too. Emma is one of the rare people that can pull off any hair color, and I’m really liking the dark hair.

While I don’t necessary like Katy Perry’s outfit, I can at least appreciate her going all out. I feel like half of these celebrities jut wanted to look cute/sexy and didn’t care about the theme. And I also highly doubt Katy cares about Taylor (and vice versa). That feud was manufactured so Taylor could get press and have a song that wasn’t about a boyfriend.

    • RJ says:

Me too, I think she looks amazing.

    • Erinn says:

She looks amazing. She looks stronger and healthier, and I like the dark hair. She must be less stressed out or something. Either way, it suits her.

    • ladysussex says:

Kitten I think she looks completely amazing!! Very sultry and stunning with the darker hair!

    • Size Does Matter says:

No I agree. I think she’s my favorite. It looks like a machine is slowly overtaking her.

    • ab says:

I agree, she looks fantastic. I love the dark hair and that belt/vest thing (?). she’s fit now because she’s filming that billie jean king movie. all that tennis training looks great on her.

  10. Tifygodess24 says:

Emma needs a sword. All I see is fancy warrior princess.
I wish I had something nice to say about Katy because I do like her but the makeup is all wrong, and the dress isn’t the best. Although I wonder if styled differently (makeup, hair, jewelry) if the dress wouldn’t come off differently? It is technically suppose to be a costume ball so I get what they were doing to some extent but missed the mark completely.

  11. Alex says:

KP was a big nope. Emma looked stunning and she is one of those people that amazingly can pull off blonde (her natual color), red and brunette.

  12. Jenns says:

I hate Jessica’s dress. She is so beautiful, but her styling is usually a huge miss. She needs a better stylist.

  13. John says:

Emma Stone looks great with dark hair

  14. Sara says:

    I think Katy looks wonderful.

  15. Dtab says:

Sorry to disagree with everyone…but I am LIVING for Katy Perry here, she is bringing it (not on theme but whatever)

    • Eden75 says:

I absolutely love this as well. I do think she is on theme however.

The theme was suppose to be fashion in an age of technology. Well, this is a steampunk dress if I ever saw one, which completely fits the theme.

Like I said on another page, I would have totally worn this if I was cool enough to be invited to the Met Gala.

    • Lilybugg says:

I was going to post something defending Katy Perry’s overall look as well! I think there is a certain level of offense out there that she decided to look “strange” rather than pretty, but I think if she had styled her hair and makeup in a normal manner, it would have taken away from the overall look of the dress. The dress is so striking, she needed a makeup and hair look that not only stood up to it, but would also elevate the dress, and I think she ultimately succeeded.

  16. LisaMarie says:

I’m going to respectfully disagree about Katy Perry. Met Gala is not about playing it safe, and fashion doesn’t always need to be “pretty.” Swifty played it safe and went for the generic hot girl look that makes me question why she ever ended up as co-chair. Perry wore a look that will have people talking, and yes, those brows are nuts but its quite the counterpoint to the current instagram brows.

  17. Nancy says:

Don’t have to try so hard anymore Katy. Ugh. Just no no no Emma, the dress is the worse one I’ve seen, ill fitting and fugly. Why do they insist on having those slits so high. I’m just going out of this room quickly.

  18. Insomniac says:

Meh. I love a lot of Prada’s handbags but I have yet to see a gown of theirs that I like.

  19. Tiffany says:

If the post did not say that was Katy, I would have went directly with Jared Leto.

  20. Rhiley says:

I thought Emma Stone was Mila Kunis.

    • JustCrimmles says:

I think she looks a lot like Aubrey Plaza in these photos. She looks great!

  21. perplexed says:

Katy Perry looks bad, but to be fair, it seemed like she was trying to fit in with the theme. Clearly, the future means looking as horrible as possible with no eyebrows.

  22. Lukie says:

Katy looked AMAZING, like some fashion icon space alien. I absolutely loved it!

I mean, it IS the Met Ball. It had a theme, and to me, she nailed it better than most.

    • Lilybugg says:

I wish this site had “like” buttons, so we wouldn’t have to post a full comment to express our agreement with a statement!

  23. serena says:

Emma looks really good! I don’t like her with blonde hair ( I think they wash her out), but as a redhead and brunette she kind of rock.

  24. Scal says:

Katy looks like a android. PERFECT for the theme. It’s risky. It’s daring. It’s different and not another safe “i’m a silver robot” look. The point of the Met Gala, regardless of the theme, is to pull out all the stops on your fashion; to really bring something really risky and daring (even if some people say it doesn’t work) something that people talk about until the next gala. How many of us still remember SLP’s various looks even when they weren’t “pretty”? If the goal was to destroy shifty swifty, she nailed it.

And I’m sure the eyebrows are just glued down and then have a layer of foundation and powder on top. Drag queens do that with their eyebrows all the time and then draw them back in with the shape they want.

  25. JudyK says:

Katy Perry…theme or no theme, too “look at me” attention-seeking desperation.

  26. Dana says:

That’s the worst Katy Perry has ever looked.

  27. Christy says:

The snapchat coverage of the Met was pretty interesting to see.

It did point out that both Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom had tamagotchi devices somewhere attached to their outfits. Those two are totally the real deal 😉

  28. Livvers says:

While from a style perspective Katy’s hair and face is lip-curling, as a costume choice I think it makes sense. Actually, I want to argue her whole look is actually on theme. This sort of couture pseudo-steampunk, dark future-past look (Doctor-Who-with-a-better-budget-villain?) is in my opinion like an alternate-universe way to interpret the theme of man (hand) and machine.

  29. drnotknowitall says:

This whole crop is just no. Perry looks like the far east and Edward Scissorhands got together to vomit on her. I can’t. My eyes:(

  30. AnitaCocktail says:

Katy looks sooo much like Jared Leto in these pics!

    • Another Random says:

YES! That’s the first thing I thought when I saw these pictures. “Jared Leto in drag.”

  31. sauvage says:

FAB. The Met Gala Lok is supposed to be costume-y and dramatic, and boy, did Katy Perry deliver! I think her look is perfect for the occasion. (At any other event, I would run from the crazy.)

  32. molli3 says:

    Emma Stone looks terrific.
Jessica Chastain, why even bother showing up if you are not going to participate in the them whatsoever?
Katy Perry…I don’t know, I can’t get past the fact that she looks exactly like Marge Simpson to me.

  33. Nancy says:

Katy and Rita were both wearing I’m Not Becky badges. See Beyoncé you made your point. After looking closer at Katy, I changed my mind, she looks pretty.

  34. Bobo says:

The makeup could be a bit better, but Katy looks amazing. Best I’ve seen so far.

  35. kri says:

Jesus. Katy Perry looks like she didn’t take off all of her metal in the MRI room. If there was a kitchen sink stuck to the back of her I would not be shocked. I know you are supposed to take off one thing before you leave the house, but why did it have to be her eyebrows?

  36. token5151 says:

All I can say is WHAT THE FUG!!!!

  37. Magnoliarose says:

Katy looks crazy! Like an alien queen and I like it. She’s dramatic and over the top. Late Victorian or like a John Singer Sargent demented portrait. I was hoping someone would rock a nod to The Industrial Revolution and she comes closest.

Emma looks nice. Maybe a play on the popularity of Greek draping during the Regency era. Could be. The demi corset leads me to this theory as corsets were changing dramatically from the Georgian era.

    • Livvers says:

Re: Industrial Revolution, I was sort of surprised no one wore mauve, fuschia, or Paris green. Those colours are serious technology & fashion history.

      • Magnoliarose says:

I thought it was an easy concept but no one did it and that seems odd. I love those colors on the carpet done well. They photograph nicely.

    • Lambda says:

      John Singer Sargent demented portrait…

I’m dead. That should be a genre, or like an entire school of Sargent epigones dedicating their lives to it, while also reading some Edgar Allan Poe in their spare time.

  38. Mabel says:

Katy Perry looks like Jared Leto in drag. Emma Stone nailed it. She looks incredible on all accounts. She was my favorite of the night.

  39. Lucy says:

Emma can pull off pretty much any hair color and I hate/love her for it.

  40. JustCrimmles says:

Chastain’s dress would have been better shorter. It looks like it was trying to go ballgown, but couldn’t quite make it. Lovely dress, just not a great length.

KP…I’m not mad at the makeup. The lack of brows is what throws it for me. Her eyes are already on the kind of cartoonishly large side, adding lashes and removing brows just exaggerated that even more. Even steam punk alien Cyborg fashion queens need eyebrows!

Loved Emma. Love the corset. The brace. All of it.

  41. tacos and tv says:

Nope! The whole thing. But, I never thought I’d say this: Emma Stone needs to go back to being a red head.

  42. JennaR says:

That first photo of Katy Perry made me do a double take because I thought it was Jared Leto in drag.

  43. TOPgirl says:

Katy looks like she’s putting on yellow face. That is so racist. I kid. I think she looks terrible tho.

  44. what's inside says:

Katy looks like Rooney Mara playing The Bride of Fu Manchu– I was so confused for a moment. Emma’s look was really good and Jessica looked wonderful in that electric blue.

  45. NeNe says:

Fug, fug, and more fug. I can’t stand this chick!

  46. Alicia says:

Katy perry? I thought it was Jared Leto hahahahhah
