Selena Gomez feels ‘defeated’ when asked about her personal life

It’s off-putting to me when fashion and beauty magazines use teenagers for their covers. But is it equally demoralizing to see 23-year-old Selena Gomez on the cover of Marie Claire? Come hell or high water, magazines are just incapable of making Selena look older than 15. Hopefully she’ll be blessed with looking young for her age for the rest of her life. Anyway, Selena isn’t talking about much in this Marie Claire interview, but I did learn some new stuff. Did you know that Selena has a roommate and they borrow each other’s clothes? Celebrities: they’re just like us! They borrow their roommate’s Metallica t-shirt too. Here are some interview highlights:

On dating: “I’ve been dating. I’ve been having the best time. But I don’t trust anybody, so dating can only be fun if I know I’m going to have fun.”

On how she deals with agents & managers: “Authenticity is my life. They make great choices, but I make the decisions.”

On being known for who she dates with not who she is: “I would try to promote something that I loved, and the entire interview would be about my personal life. I would leave a room feeling defeated, feeling embarrassed, but I would always make sure to put that smile on my face because I wasn’t going to let them get to me.”

On taking control of her career: “I had to not be afraid to ask dumb questions, which means I asked a million things about every single step that I was making.”

On her upcoming tour and film: “I finally just wanted to go for it. I wanted to do things that I knew were going to be me. I don’t want people to look at me as someone who is just this celebrity person.”

[From Marie Clarie]

Even though she’s had some extreme ups and downs over the past few years, I’m a believer in Selena Gomez. Is that weird? Like, I think she has a good head on her shoulders and I believe she’ll always be okay. Even though I know she wants to do more film and TV work, I sort of think she should just focus on music right now, because that’s going well for her and she has a nice voice. And even though everyone wants her to find the next big boyfriend after Justin Bieber, I like that she’s taking some time and dating around and not taking it too seriously, which is what you’re supposed to do when you’re 23. I even have faith that Selena will figure out this nonsense with Orlando Bloom, honestly. Like, he’s the one who looks like a douche. She’s just “having fun.”

Well considering what just went down with Orlando…

Honestly she was very young when she started with Justin so I try to keep that in mind, but the truth is I often look at the ‘big’ names in music currently and note how they pushed romance and who they were dating to the very background so the focus could always be on their professional.

Beyonce and Nicki Minaj were both in long term relationships and refused to admit it because they knew once there’s a man you now have to answer questions about the relationship rather than your work.

For better or worse Selena put her own work to the back to be in a committed relationship with Justin. He’s still a mess and now she’s struggling to really have that strong persona her musical peers already have.

she has a nice voice??? really? Autotune.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, I think even her auto-tuned voice is awful. I actually think Britney’s voice was better. (I also think Britney had more charisma — Selena is so boring when I watch her performances). The reason I bring up Britney is because Selena seems to take off her clothes in her videos now.

Selena doesn’t look older than 15 because she has very little definition to her facial bones, plus the hallmarks of a “baby face”–big eyes, high forehead, small round mouth. I think she’s beautiful, but it’s not a look that ages well when the face starts to hollow.

I figured she had something coming out, given the number of obvious Selena BIs on BG. Plus this ridiculousness with Legolas.

Has anyone inspired less commentary than Selena Gomez?

Her mom ran her career so I kinda get why she wasn’t more discreet with her Beiber relationship. This is why a professional is needed. And not those PR ppl who kiss ass. Someone who will be authentic. Very rare to find in Hollywood.

Ahhhh, first love. She just needs to realize literally everyone has been there. At some point she’ll relax and won’t be so hard on herself. She’s learning and growing. I really like how genuine she is.

I wish someone would ask her about the story of her and Waka Flocka and The ENTIRE Brick Squad. I’d like to hear her side.

Selena’s does NOT have a nice or great voice at all. Actually, she has NO voice. Without all the filters..she can’t even sing.

Dreadful singer, but she actually seems like a kind person.
