Bethenny Frankel’s Botox doctor explains how he achieved her new look

bethennybeforeafter
Earlier this week, Bethenny Frankel admitted to getting Botox to reshape her jaw. It was refreshing to hear a celebrity own up to injectables, as so many try to fib and attribute their altered faces to skin care, diet or weight loss. (Looking at you, Olivia Munn.) Bethenny explained that her dermatologist told her that her jaw was too “tense” due to habitually grinding her teeth. She said “About three years ago, my dermatologist said to me, why don’t we try injecting your jaw because it’s so tense.” The result is that her face looks more filled out, her cheeks are less prominent and she does look “better.”

Radar Online was able to get Bethenny’s dermatologist to speak about her procedures on the record, and he explained it as an aesthetic decision to bring her jaw more in proportion to the rest of her face.

Botox doc — Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel — is exclusively telling all to RadarOnline.com about his client’s injections.

“Botox can be injected in the Masseter muscle, right above the jawline. This is often done to correct the discomfort and tensions of TMJ, specifically what I did for Bethenny.” Dr. Sobel, the founder of DDF Skincare, explains to Radar.

The professional admits the 45-year-old mom’s face has changed shape.

“Bethenny’s jawline was very prominent and not in proportion to her cheeks,” he says, adding that he injected small amounts of Botox over a period of months to atrophy the muscle.

“By shrinking the Masseter muscle down slowly, her cheeks became more prominent than the squareness of her jaw, resulting in a softer, more feminine look.”

Dr. Sobel would not comment on any other services the outspoken star may have received.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Susan Evans— who has never treated the star— recently told Radar that she believes she has gotten cheek implants or fillers, in addition to a chin implant and eye lift.

[From Radar Online]

It doesn’t seem like Dr. Sobel really read Bethenny’s interview or he would have said something about her bruxism, but the end result is the same and she probably did get some relief from her tense muscles. It doesn’t sound like it was the reason he originally presented to her as she claimed, but whatever. I love how Radar adds another surgeon who speculates that Bethenny probably had a bunch of other things done too.

In related news, Bethenny skewered Sonja Morgan on the last episode of Real Housewives of NY. Apparently Sonja has a prosecco brand called “Tipsy Girl” which enraged Bethenny for potentially capitalizing on the success of her alcohol and lifestyle brand, “Skinny Girl.” Bethenny had Sonja in tears as she said “When a brand rides on the coattails of another brand and kind of uses a similar name, they call it a cheater brand.” She then dismissed it by adding “You can’t affect my business at all. It doesn’t matter,” but told Sonja she wanted nothing to do with her at all. Bethenny has since penned a blog calling Sonja “sad,” bragging about her business ventures and claiming she welcomes competition. It doesn’t sound like it.

These Real Housewives should go into business helping women decide what kind of Botox, fillers and plastic surgery to get. I just googled that, and plastic surgery advice coaches are a real thing. Obviously Bethenny couldn’t do this because you have to be good with people, but there’s definitely a call for it.

In the 2013 pic her cheeks look like they are going to fall off her face. So weird.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

In that pic she looks like she is smuggling hard boiled quail eggs in her face. Very weird.

  2. SilkyMalice says:

As I commented previously, I am currently undergoing the same treatment for bruxism. I have always had a very square jawline, so it will be interesting to see if that changes. I just hope it will relieve the TMJ!

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      Silky,

How is it working for you? I, too, am a bruxist- I have worn a custom night splint for about 20 years and still managed to get some superficial fractures in molars ( I clench my jaw like crazy at night, seriously, like a damn vise grip ) necessitating crowns (3 now) before the splint was made extra thick to put pressure on the front “cliff” of it. I do not have an angular jaw at all, so would not be looking for cosmesis, but relief of the night clenching and tightness I wake with. I am interested to hear anything you’d like to share. Thanks!

I am also curious to hear about any/ the degree of change to the appearance of your jaw, because I still believe that both Munn and Frankel had their jawlines reduced via intra-oral approach feminization surgery.

      • Anonymei says:

I also have bruxism. You might want to investigate if you have a magnesium deficiency. All of a sudden I started clenching my jaw at night plus some other symptoms and taking a magnesium supplement stopped it. Thanks to the Internet.

I’d honestly try the botox but may not go for the jaw shaving cos I’m too scared. This is the reason why I don’t like to smile in photos. My face looks like wide screen tv. Yes, I could be sensitive. Anyway the other thing I would want is to be taller but surgery absolutely makes me say no. But trust me, if they made a safe pill (yeah right) that costs 10k, I’ll save for it. I find that short people especially short women, work harder to be taken seriously at work. Doesn’t help that studies allege that tall people go further in the workplace. Anyway….I can’t tell if she looks better. Some plastic results are pretty good. Some are bad. Best thing is not to overdo, I guess.

    • Erinn says:

I’m so freaked out by botox. I have TMJ and migraines… and botox is weirdly enough supposed to really help both. But I’m too squeemy for it.

      • Zuzus girl says:

Erinn- Botox was originally for migraines and has done miracles for some people. Consult your doctor and talk about your fears. (Fellow migraine sufferer. Fortunate that mine are very rare.)

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Botox knocked out my bad migraines about 8 years ago. Only rare minor headaches since. Still perimenopausal, but hormone swings not so bad as 10 years ago, so the may have something to do with it, too.

      • Botox got rid of my smaller migraines however I had much worse larger episodes and in the time When l still took Botox I was hospitalized more frequently than with using other treatments. Other people have sworn by it as a miracle. For me it was a waste of $300 bucks every 3 months.

      Please update later, so curious

  3. HollyG says:

Um nobody on any Real Housewives show needs to give advice on plastic surgery.

Quoting Tina Fey: “They [Real Housewives] try to look young, but then they end up looking like a purse that melted in a car accident. They look like when a kid draws a face on its hand.”

  4. LAK says:

Wow, you learn something new everyday. Who knew botox could be used this way?

Sonia agravates me. The other ladies show more kindness to her than i’d be capable of showing. And considering how rudely direct Bethenny can be, i thought she was very gentle in this chat Sonia. And someone needed to be direct with Sonia.

    • Miss M says:

As far as I know, Botox was initially developed for the treatment of spams, , chronic pain, dystonias, etc.

      • Lindsay says:

No, it was made for cosmetic reasons and doctors started noticing patients saying it helps with migraines. I started using it for migraines at the very early stages and had to see a plastic surgeon, then a pain specialist neurologist have finally come around and have been trained to do it.

      • LAK says:

The first i heard of it was as treatment for migraines.

The first i heard of its use in Hollywood, it was injected underarms to stop ladies sweating on Oscar night.

    • Jade says:

Haha yup LAK, but this Botox jaw treatment has been around for at least 3 years. The V Shape face is very desired in Asia, especially China, Taiwan and Korea. Celebs claim they photograph better and easier (less digital touch ups and contouring) with a slim face.

    • Bridget says:

Not a Sonia fan here at all. I find her to be kind of jerky.

    • anna says:

sonja is a fraud. she is in this financial mess because of her own doing. it’s about time someone told her to take responsibility for her bullshit and her failed businesses. remember the toaster oven shoot with heather? she really effed herself by trying to help sonja.

      • LAK says:

I felt so sorry for Heather. She really tried and tried and Sonia just kept screwing her over without a blush.

    • Chrissy says:

I agree, LAK. And Bethenny really had reached out in kindness to Sonia regarding business advice and done more than others to try to get her on track. She viewed this as being stabbed in the back for that help, as would anyone. Of course she wouldn’t be concerned about her business being affected – when has Sonia’s business ventures ever amounted to anything. The conversation very clearly seemed to show her upset about the personal dig at what Sonia did. It was about time Sonia was spoken to like that.

  5. shewolf says:

I’m not sure how someone can look at someone and think “her jaw is not in proportion to her cheeks.” It never would have occurred to me to look at someone and think that the way they were made is somehow deficient. I don’t really understand how some people are pleased with the results of cosmetic surgery either… especially people who have nose jobs. I get that a “hook nose” isn’t the most flattering and if I had one I’d probably hate it… but you can’t just get rid of that shape and act like it works with the rest of your face. Generally speaking if you have a certain type of nose the rest of your bone structure will support that shape and anything else looks kind of… off.

I dont mean to lecture or to sound judgy because to each their own, I have a few friends who’ve had cosmetic surgery and don’t find fault with them for it! I just think there’s something in appreciating the face you were given and if you cant see beauty in it, it doesnt mean its not there. I guess we all have different preferences.

    • pinetree13 says:

I know what you’re saying and I wouldn’t have thought it wasn’t in “proportion” though i did notice her jaw used to stick out but not terribly so to my eye.

  6. klaas says:

I think Kylie jenner did that aswell.

  7. JudyK says:

Wondered why I suddenly found Bethenny so beautiful…best Botox job I’ve ever seen. Also love the haircut.

  8. Iridescent says:

But is there any danger to weakening the masseter muscles? “Shrinking” a muscle seems like it could have negative aspects.

    • SilkyMalice says:

I’ll let you know if food starts falling out of my mouth. 😀

    • Jade says:

So far the blog reviews I’ve read have been positive, but as a disclaimer, some of the bloggers’ treatments were sponsored.

  9. Kitten says:

This is one of those rare Hollywood cases where the injections were done well and with a lighter touch. She really does look better in the “after” picture.

Now if only we could fix what’s inside….

  10. realitycheck says:

I thought her jaw was shaped that way because she was bulimic and it caused the significant purtrusions of her cheekbones.

  11. Izzy says:

Yet she is still hideous on the inside…

  12. outhousecat says:

She still looks like a gopher and acts like an ass. Cosmetic changes can only do so much, and they can’t touch the inside.

    • Aren says:

I don’t know why some people like her, there’s nothing beautiful or special about her. Plus, she looks about 15 years older than what she claims she is.

      • NeNe says:

She’s trash!!! In my opinion, she nothing but pure trash. She’s pathetic, bitter, angry, whiny, and just plan annoying.

  13. Jen43 says:

I object to calling her a celebrity. She just isn’t. But I do agree she looks good. I remember when she was pregnant. I hadn’t seen a photo of her pregnant but I tuned into her show, and I swear I have never seen a pregnant lady whose face looked so different. It was like when a thin person goes undercover as a fat person. She was unrecognizable. I think she’s actually messed with her face plenty.

    • Sabrine says:

She looks good now and I don’t think she’s the ogre people make her out to be. She is a good mom to her daughter and of course she was fighting for her rights during her contentious divorce from Hoppy. She speaks her mind which insults a lot of people but I like it.

  14. Denise says:

I don’t see how botox can change the actual SHAPE of the jaw. Soften, sure. But it wasn’t just tense looking, it had a square but jagged shape, it had a point on each side. She must have had it shaved. That’s a significant amount of bone that’s not there anymore.

  15. isabelle says:

Her new hair cut really helps as well. Too many of the realhouse women think youth is in very long long hair extensions and honestly it ages them. They wear the same exact hairstyle and its not flattering on everyone. The shorter hair women tend to look younger than the very long hair extension women.

  16. Velvet Elvis says:

The work was an improvement but I still think she looks older than 45.

  17. Can botox into the master muscle give you an eye job and a neck lift?

  18. raincoaster says:

No, she is lying. She may have had botox in the jaw too, but she ALSO paid to get it broken and made smaller. Bones don’t shrink because of botox.

  19. Tania says:

I think her jaw looks better but I don’t understand what’s going on with her cheeks. Are those implants? They must be, right?

  20. Chantal says:

Ugh. That face is hideous. Why, why, why do women get those fake-ass balls under their cheeks? It NEVER looks good nor natural!

  21. Alexis says:

    She. Looks. The. Same.

  22. Karla says:

I acrually think she looked better in the 2013 picture :/
