David Schwimmer shares a beer with his five year old daughter (not really)

After focusing on his family for few years, David Schwimmer recently returned to television playing Robert Kardashian in The People vs. OJ Simpson. Next he’s headlining in his first series since Friends called Feed the Beast, premiering June 5 on AMC. Some outlets call it a dark comedy but David describes it as a drama with dark humor in it. He plays a widowed, alcoholic sommelier raising a son who hasn’t spoken since his mother was killed in a hit-and-run. Jim Sturgess plays his childhood friend, a chef who just got out of jail. With the help of a loan from the mob, they decide to open a restaurant in the Bronx. God, I am all over this show! David is making the promotional rounds and spoke to Seth Meyers about inadvertently making his five-year old daughter, Chloe, a beer drinker.

Like father, like daughter?

David Schwimmer visited “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Wednesday and shared a story about his 5-year-old daughter Cleo’s developing taste buds.

The “Friends” actor stars in a new AMC series, “Feed The Beast,” in which he plays a sommelier, struggling with alcohol abuse, who hopes to open a restaurant with his friend, who was recently released from jail. While doing some “research” for the role at home, Schwimmer allowed his daughter to have a sip of wine upon her request.

“Listen … I don’t know how the other parents are out there,” he said, “but when I pour myself a glass of wine that my wife and I have over dinner and my daughter says, ‘Can I try that?’ I thought, ‘Well, if you start saying no then they’re just going to want it more.’ So, I thought ‘Yeah, all right. Go ahead, sweetie. Have a sip.’ And luckily she was like, ‘Blah! No!’”

Cleo, instead, took a liking to another one of dad’s adult drinks: beer. According to Schwimmer, she now “loves” it and will take swigs when her parents aren’t looking. Clearly, he’s not too thrilled about it.

He added, “If I have a beer out, I have to watch it, because if I turn my back, she’ll be chugging it.”

[From The Huffington Post]

The exact thing happened to me. Using the same logic as David, I ended up having to wrest my champagne flute from my daughter’s clutches when she was five. To this day, I drink champagne from a Solo cup to hide it from her.

Seriously, I can’t wait for this show. After years of working in restaurants I have developed a love for shows that reveal how bonkers the business can be. Here’s a pretty good write up on the series. Feed the Beast is loosely based on the Danish series Bankerot. Man, I hope Anthony Bourdain makes an appearance.

I can relate with the beer story. If my daughter left her beer bottle where her daughter could reach it, she would also take a swig – and she liked it. Learned real quick to put it out of her reach (she was about 18 months at the time).

His wife (?) is BEAUTIFUL. and so is his daughter. I love the synopsis of the show, and I’m curious to watch it too.
I don’t really like the idea of making kids try drinks but then again i don’t have kids and i understand the reasoning. They won’t like it so they’ll stop asking. Except some kids love it from the beginning and there might be a problem!!!

The daughter is like a mini me of her mom. So cute.

I tried a sip of Bud when I was 5 and I found it repulsive. Interesting how some things never change…

Yes, we are from Louisiana where crawfish boils and abita beer are sononomous with one another and my 5 year old boys went on and on and on and on about tasting it. Finally we gave in. They each took a huge swig and rightly spewed it out. Claiming it the nastiest thing they ever tasted.

    Problem solved.

My dad let me try very small sips/gulps of alcohol from when I was very young. I have been drunk a handful of times and rarely drink as an adult. I never saw any taboo or secrecy around alcohol and grew up feeling respected and included bu adults who knew that kids were not stupid…kids always understand what adults are doing at least on some level.

Ps David’s wife is a stunner.

So did my dad, and I thought it was the most revolting thing ever. My mom didn’t love it but she didn’t want there to be any mystery about it either. When I was a teenager I started developing a taste for it, and I would drink a beer or a glass of wine with dinner with my family. I never had the “omg I can drink now and I’m going to drink ALL the alcohol!” so many people experience when they leave home. I was like been there done that, I don’t want your cheap nasty beer.

@Hecate-I keep seeing the commercials for this show and I agree that it looks really good!

I have been re-watching Friends recently and I have to say that now Ross is one of my favorites along with Phoebe. I used to hate them but I really have changed my mind about those.

Also, my 5 year old niece is a beer lover too. you really have to keep an eye on her otherwise she would grab the bottle/glass and never let go.

    • MooHoo says:

hilarious – I feel the same way. I keep thinking when I watch old Friends episodes that David Schwimmer is actually the best actor in the show. he hams it up so well.

My parents have the cutest photo of my brother when he was 2 years old holding one of their Coors Light cans. He tried to sip it and ended up pouring it all down his chest, where he then developed a huge rash exactly where it touched his skin. Lucky for him, he’s grown out of that allergy.

  8. Kiki says:

My dad smoked a lot and because I looked up to him, cigarettes fascinated me. Once I expressed interest in smoking he said: “You can try it. It’s better you do it in front of us”. You know what? I hated it. Never smoked in my 35 years of life. Good logic David!

  9. Louisa says:

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but he was my favorite cast member of friends and Ross was my favorite character. He is such an excellent comedic and dramatic actor idk why everyone didn’t like him or thought he was obnoxious…. I thought he was freaking hysterical and I wish he would do more comedy. On top of it, he’s a brilliant director and producer. He’s a true thespian and I just really respect him and I like watching him. Off topic but I needed to say it!! Am I alone in this?!

The leather pants episode. Makes me laugh so hard I almost cry whenever I see it. 🙂

Or the spray tan episode (did you count to ten? You mean mississippi-less?!?!?)

    • Lozface says:

I was and still am a huuuuge Friends fan! David / Ross had some of the funniest moments and he was brilliant. His character was a pain but I think that’s what I loved about him.

I can’t wait to see him in this new show… A combo of drama and dark humour will suit him perfectly.

I still laugh when I hear the word: ‘pivot’ because of Ross!

    PIVOT!

I really hope he does well as he is hilarious
