Get your tissues ready because I lucked out in being the one to deliver your Good News Morsel today. David Beckham is a tireless advocate for children all over the world. His charities range from buying mobility devices for disabled kids, to fighting HIV, to protecting children against violence. Last year, he celebrated a decade of ambassadorship with Unicef by partnering with them to found his 7 fund, advocating for children in seven countries for seven different initiatives. Recently, Becks travelled to Africa to see for himself how effective the charity has been and what can still be done.

Proving once again that he’s more than just a pretty face, David Beckham recently traveled to Africa to visit children living with HIV, who are receiving support from his charity 7 and UNICEF.

The longtime Goodwill Ambassador shared a sweet photo from his visit, in which he’s sitting and smiling with a young boy in his village.

“Had an inspiring time in Swaziland with @unicef,” Beckham wrote in the caption. “To see how how my 7 Fund is supporting children living with HIV.”

Beckham launched 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund last year to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable children by focusing on seven different countries and seven different initiatives. The name of the charity is a nod to Beckham’s lucky number on his football shirts as well as for his and wife Victoria Beckham’s daughter Harper Beckham, whose middle name is Seven.

I realize Becks is not a saint but I adore him; I am not sure what that says about me. He may not be top of his class but he is an amazingly talented person and has used that fame to do a lot of good. As Kaiser reminded me, when he travels for Unicef, Becks’ one request is that he be allowed time to play some ball with the local kids; like in 2008 on his Sierra Leone trip when he asked the driver to pull over so he could join a pick up match he spotted while driving. In the video, just look at their reaction to him and his reaction to their ardor; he never stops smiling.

I have mentioned before when I fell in love with Becks, when I saw the video of him surprising fans at the 2012 Olympics. The way I see him is he understands the impact he had on people when he was a football god. Even though his talent earned him his fans, he never seems anything less than humbled by their enthusiastic reception of him.

And Christ on a Cracker he is still excruciatingly hot.

  2. Sixer says:

I can’t dislike little David, either. I know he has varied right plonker attributes but there’s something ineffably benign about him, isn’t there? He just seems, I don’t know, kind.

    • Mira says:

I agree with you. He’s not that smart or interesting but i can’t dislike him either. He just seems like a genuinely nice person.

  3. Astrid says:

Great story. Nice that he is using his fame for good.

  4. thebeachedwhale says:

Call me cynical, but I always wonder how much more good celebrities could do investing in vetted local organizations with local staff who are working on solving their community’s problems and are in desperate need of funding rather than creating a new outside organization with their name on it.

    • SparkleFace says:

I think perhaps they think if they are a spokesperson for their own charity, they can have more control of everything including donations. Also, they can use their fame to bring more awareness to a cause.

  5. TIFFANY says:

He just has a natural way with children. There are some people out there that have that gift. POTUS is the same way.

    • SparkleFace says:

Yeah every time I see POTUS with kids, his whole face lights up like it’s the best part of his day. 🙂 It’s so endearing.

David Beckham went to ‘Africa’? Africa is not ONE country… It’s a friggin continent! It’s like saying he went to Asia or Europe… He went to Swaziland, in Africa would be a little more enlightening.
    Vent for the day over….

  7. Suzanne says:

I always think the charity work the Beckhams undertake is to get David a knighthood. They really want to be Sir and Lady Beckham. I’m not a fan of the honours list or the monarchy for that matter. I am with another David (Bowie) who turned down a few honours.

    • SparkleFace says:

I don’t know, he does seem to genuinely enjoy helping people and making them happy.

  8. Lucinda says:

Regardless of his motivation, which I am going to assume is well-intentioned, these pictures are great. This is not someone who is just going through the motions and there out of obligation. The smiles are wonderful. This post made my day.

  9. Snazzy says:

Christ on a Cracker is my new favourite expression. I nees to use it, along with yesterday’s word of the day, canoodling

  10. cyn says:

I adore him. I cannot help it.

But, could we possibly have a David Tennant thread?

  11. odunayo says:

Hi, please note Africa is a continent with over 50 countries so am always surprised when I see most foreign people classify it or discuss it as if it is a country

I am sure you would never have written Beckham visited Asia

Good work Beckham for visiting Swaziland, one of the last country in Africa with complete monarchy.

    • Tris says:

I was quite surprised at CB being so insensitive to such basics. To refer to Africa as a country is similar to referring to the next president as “Hilary”; it reinforces subtle bigotry.

      • Dally says:

Nah, Hillary’s own campaign has been promoting the “Hillary” branding, since “Clinton” is so strongly associated with Bill, and it is helpful to distinguish between them, much as George W. Bush was branded as “Dubya” to distinguish from his father.

Love this guy. I think his intentions r genuine and im an old cynic…pity ther r not more footballers like him – ronaldo take note.
