Who Wore It Better: Dwayne Johnson’s fanny pack edition

Just a disclaimer: I am referring to Dwayne Johnson as DJ henceforth because I never know whether to call him Dwayne or The Rock. This ^^ is the hot man we have all come to know at the LA premiere for his new film with Kevin Hart, Central Intelligence. DJ was on Graham Norton this weekend to promote the film, which comes out June 17th (and in which he shows his derriere, just FYI.) As Graham loves his memes, he devoted a segment to the throwback pic of a 90s-era DJ werking a tucked in turtleneck and fanny pack. Not one to take himself too seriously, DJ’s explained, “I was just owning this look. I had a turtleneck, I had mom jeans on and I was wearing a fanny pack”. Graham emphasized the looks popularity by showing celebrity copycats like Seth Rogen:

Playing along were fellow action stars Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum who were promoting Independence Day: Resurgence. Liam slyly asked DJ, “this is you being serious, yeah?” After showing other non-famous folk, including a baby, dressed in the outfit, Graham showed a photo Liam and Goldblum had taken for the occasion:

Look at Liam – he is taking this so seriously; I think he’s pulling Zoolander’s Blue Steel. Doesn’t Goldblum’s face say, ‘gosh, you know, this isn’t a bad look’? When Graham mentioned the tissue under his arm in the photo, DJ defends it by saying that the place where he had put his arm was very dirty. I love that of the things going on in that photo, the tissue is what he felt needed context. Here is the full clip:

DJ covers July’s British GQ. During the interview, he spoke about his aforementioned WWF alter ego, The Rock. He says, “The Rock was – still is in fact - the best role I will ever get to play. I was being me, but me turned all the way up to ten. I could say anything, do anything and I would wink and everyone was in on the joke.” He also mentions politics as a potential future for him. He says he hasn’t ruled out governor and calls the presidency ‘alluring’ but, he says, “there are a lot of other things I want to do first.

DJ brought his mom Ata, daughter Simone and longtime girlfriend Lauren Hashian to the premiere. Laura and DJ have been together for a decade but they keep their relationship pretty private. Lauren gave birth to their daughter Jasmine last December.

I know I will get it in the neck for this, but the tag line for their film is ‘All you need is a little Hart and a big Johnson’. It made me laugh, not enough to pay to see the film, but it did make me laugh and I appreciate that.

    This guy 😍

  3. Maria_ says:

    Love him sooo much!

  4. Sixer says:

When Americans say “fanny pack”, it makes my eyes go all crossed. I will NEVER get used to the existence of fanny packs. But it does make me want to say “fanny packs” over and over again until my tongue crosses too and I die laughing.

    Sorry! That is all.

    • Rebecca/Becky says:

Sixer, I remember when an American colleague told me the phrase at a lunchtime pub outing, I nearly wet myself laughing. I still chuckle when I hear it 10 years later.

      • Sixer says:

I was saying this to GNAT the other day. I think the proper definition of fanny pack is a crude slang for tampon. So every time anyone says it, that’s what my mind tells me, and I fall about laughing!

      • Sabrine says:

There is nothing wrong with fanny packs. I have no idea why such a useful item gets such a bad rap. I wear a small one when I go for a walk because my clothing is not suitably equipped with pockets for cell phones, etc. Long live the fanny pack!

      • Sixer says:

It’s a transatlantic fanny thing, Sabrine. We Britishers do not think bottom when we hear fanny.

    • detritus says:

I only recently and somewhat embarrassingly found out that fanny does not mean bottom in the UK. A pat on the fanny is not what I thought it was.

  5. Alex says:

I love DJ he seems like a fun guy to be around. The fanny pack pictures made me laugh when I saw them on his IG.

  6. Mia4s says:

Stop making me love you Rock!! 😉

Oh and now I’ve got a crush on Jeff Goldblum…again.

  7. Naya says:

I am really surprised we arent talkiing about how much work Liam Hemsworth has had done. Graham showed teen photos of all three guests and Liam looks like a completely different person. Nose, chin even possibly forehead work done. Definitely dental, skin, hair straightening and colouring. Graham even asked him if had a mouth reduction surgery. That was the take home from that episode for me.

  8. Lucy says:

That is a wonderful picture. Good for him for owning it.

    • doofus says:

yeah, unlike Axl Rose who made it worse by demanding the pics be removed.

I think Rose doesn’t understand how the internet works.

  9. Tania says:

I just love him. I feel like he’s genuine, it’s not for show. He just seems like a sincerely good guy.

  10. Barrett says:

He has great genes. His mom looks fantastic

  11. Becki says:

I just LOVE him and I love that he can laugh at himself and own his silly 90s look. The handkerchief though!! HAHAHA oh my goodness, so awesome. AND b/c I love him so much, my husband and I are going to see the movie in theaters LOL It will be no Oscar winner for sure, but it looks like a good time.

  12. Natalie says:

I downloaded the Rock Clock. Haven’t used it yet, but I’m looking forward to being harassed out of bed by the Rock.

  13. Rapunzel says:

The Rock is amazing, always. Liam will unfortunately always be the lesser Hemsworth brother. Thor would have rocked the fanny pack better. But Goldblum and Rogan seem to be having fun.

Also, when did Rock’s daughter Simone get so grown up!? I feel old, as I remember when she was born, and Rock was with his first wife.

    • jsilly4e says:

Rapunzel I was just thinking that! I feel very old. She’s a grown up! And I can’t believe he’s been with his girlfriend for a decade. It’s feels like he was with his first wife not too long ago. Time flies.

  14. Melanie says:

Can we all just agree to write him in for president come November…..

  15. Pants says:

I mean, Rock has to win it, but I’m not mad at Jeff Goldblum either.

  16. Miss M says:

The Rock wore it better! 🙂

  17. tealily says:

I don’t like “DJ”… Rock or Dwayne is much better!

  18. Gaby says:

    He’s an adorable giant

  19. crictorrun says:

    Goldblum for life. Ouchamagoucha.

  20. Cc says:

    His daughter is gorgeous!
