Keri Russell in Monique Lhuillier at the Tony Awards: striking or fug?

Keri Russell was at the Tony Awards last night to present Waitress, a musical based on the film of the same name, in which she starred in 2007. Keri just had a baby, with her Americans costar Matthew Rhys, a couple of weeks ago. She was in a red low-cut Monique Lhuillier gown with cutouts along the back, buttons down the front, gathered sleeves and some kind of silver leaf-like pattern along the top. To be fair to Keri, this dress may have been a last minute choice in honor of the victims in Orlando, for which people were wearing silver ribbons. So she picked a dress with silver applique. It’s not her best look.

Busy Philipps was also in Monique Lhuillier, she went as her bestie Michelle Williams’s plus one. Busy was in a strapless pink gown with a mod floral pattern. She was carrying a Jane Eyre clutch by Olympia Le-Tan, which she already owned. This dress isn’t bad, it’s a good choice for the event.

Karolina Kurkova was in a black formfitting Coach dress with a gold and black jacket over it. I looked through their ready-to-wear jackets and there’s nothing quite like this one, not that I would want to own it or anything. It’s very Grease. Coach does have a military insignia jacket, but nothing with this diamond pattern. I think it was custom made with the silver ribbon motif.

Tavi Gevinson was also in Coach, in this somewhat shocking mix of patterns. Tavi is in The Crucible. This look is very similar to the Coach Christina Ricci wore to the CFDA Awards, however Christina had this same blouse and a-line skirt in all black with some gold piping. This looks like the 70s and 90s got drunk and had a fight.

I like Busy’s dress, it’s pretty and nice for spring/early summer.
I always think Keri is so pretty, but this overall look isn’t that flattering to her. Ditto to Karolina, the bulk of that jacket makes her head look oddly tiny.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I like the cut of Busy’s dress, but the print and colour are ugly.
And yeah, Keri is so pretty but this is awful.
      Tavi looks great.

      • Sullivan says:

I like Tavi a lot. She’s young, smart, talented, and funny. She can pull off this look.

    • Kitten says:

      I love Keri but…no.
I’m not feeling the slicked-back hairstyle that is so popular right now. It’s so severe.

    • bluevelvet says:

I love Keri’s dress, but could do without the wrist adornments. It’s a little too much bling…otherwise…YES!

  2. littlemissnaughty says:

Keri Russell is paying homage to Blanche Devereaux, yes? If so, I applaud her.

  3. Nancy says:

I never would have recognized Felicity. Oh my time does fly.

  4. Almondjoy says:

I kind of hate everything here. Busy’s dress isn’t all that bad but it isn’t all that great either.

Also, no hate for Keri and the center part? I learned here on this very site that middle parts look good on no one! Of course, I disagree. But still.

  5. Krista says:

Love Sarah Bareilles. She’s one of the most talented artists around these days.

    • Brea says:

I love her too, she’s one of my favourite songwriters. I’m glad the play got recognition, I would love to see it

    • Alarmjaguar says:

Me, too. Saw it, it is great fun. Very girl power. I am bummed not to see Sarah’s dress discussed here. I really liked it

  6. tracking says:

She’s, what, a month or so post-partum? Damn, she is genetically blessed.

  7. Tiffany says:

Maybe it is Keri’s hair and makeup that is throwing the overall look off. Everything is severe.

    • Esmom says:

That was my first thought. The gown actually kinda works on her if maybe she’d loosened things up above her neck. Way too much concealer and that hairstyle isn’t very flattering.

I still just don’t know what to make of her and Matthew R.

  8. Nilber says:

I’m rather obsessed with the clip of “Waitress” although embarrassed to admit to have never heard of it before today.

    • Susan says:

Jessie Mueller is phenomenal in that clip. One of the best performances from last night. Although not unexpected since Mueller was phenomenal last year too.

      • Giddy says:

I saw an interview with Jessie Mueller and she said that for “Waitress” an oven was installed in the lobby of the theater and pies are baked each night so that the audiences get greeted with the aroma!

    • DelilahJones says:

You should check out the movie it’s based on! It’s great!

  9. Darlene says:

What’s on Keri’s chest? Have they covered a tattoo? Acne? Does anyone else see it?

    • Tiffany says:

Looks like the HD makeup was not blended in well enough.

    • Kk says:

She looks tired and like she kinda wishes she was home on the couch in sweats (don’t blame her). The dress is fine. She’s capitalizing on the postpartum…uh fullness. I think they probably used a lot of makeup to try to minimize the vein-y look of early breastfeeding.

    • amilu says:

It’s just powder. Apparently it looks normal in normal lighting, but gets a little crazy under flash bulbs.

Keri got off easy. If you google powder + Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Drew Barrymore, Ashley Judd, etc… you’ll see some waaaaay more horrifying examples of this silica powder on the red carpet.

  10. Kellyrae says:

Waitress was a great movie. Very sad that the writer of the movie, Adrienne Shelley was murderered before the musical was made. She also co starred with Kerri Russel. If you haven’t seen the movie it’s definitely worth checking out.

    • amilu says:

She was murdered before the film was released. I always liked her and was so sad to hear she was killed. Such a senseless, tragic death. Her daughter was just a toddler at the time. 🙁

  11. Lisa says:

I try to avoid saying this about anyone, but Keri Russell is so boring. I can’t find anything to like about her… Nothing about her acting stands out or makes me want to see more. My friends stan for The Americans, but I’m surprised it is as successful as it is with her as the lead.
