Saoirse Ronan in Stella McCartney at the Tonys: pretty or problematic?

Saoirse Ronan is currently starring in the Broadway revival of The Crucible, and she came out for last night’s Tony Awards. A lot of people thought she was one of the best-dressed women. My opinion? Anyone wearing Stella McCartney will never be the best-dressed. This pale pink gown is by Stella and yes, it’s one of the better Stella dresses I’ve seen. But I still think the color reads too “nude” on Saoirse, and I think it’s TOO simple.

Rose Byrne in Thakoon. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but sure. I think so highly of Rose that I’ll give her a pass on this confusing dress. From the neck up, she looks amazing. And she and Bobby seem like they’re so in love.

I only watched an hour of the Tonys, but it felt like there were a lot of cutaways to Claire Danes for some reason. I guess she was sitting up front maybe? Claire wore one of her favorite designers, Narciso Rodriguez. The simple navy gown is the new little black dress, I think. This looks very pretty on her and I’m glad she’s not covered in feathers.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Zuhair Murad. It’s okay. I feel like this is two decent ideas for a dress in one.

Renée Elise Goldsberry won a Tony for her work in Hamilton! She wore this great Oscar de la Renta gown.

That color on Saorise Ronan is awful. It looks awful in still pictures and it looked awful on stage. My husband actually thought she was wearing a body stocking.

Make that dress a fantastic jewel tone or a stronger pastel and it would have knocked it out of the park.

      Anaemic is the word.

Totally agree – the lines of the dress are surprisingly elegant, but the lack of color was a poor choice.

      Nothing burger dress

The problem with the dress is that it is too close to her skin tone; there was virtually no contrast. I literally did a double take when she walked out (and not in a good way!).

Claire looks great in this type of dress, but that hair color does her no favors. She looks way better when it’s a little darker/redder.

Renee looks AMAZING! The color and fit are fantastic on her; the styling is simple and perfect.

REG for the win imo. I love that dress!

Saoirse looked so great for the Oscars. Sexy and the green went so well with her eyes and skin tone. I have no idea why she would pick this nude Stella McCartney. It literally pales in comparison to her Oscar dress. I thought she would have realized by now which colors look the best on her.

OOHH I kinda don’t hate anything here to be honest, except Claire and her clenched husband (why do they always read so …. tightly wound I guess…??) No Satin , if satin doesn’t help Claire Dane’s little body it’s just not gonna do for anyone

I love the dress. I love the pale pink shade on her pale skin. It looks so ethereal. 10 out of 10 from me.
    Everyone else looks meh.

Saoirse looks amazing to me 😍

Absolutely hate Rose’s dress and it’s awkward length. (Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if it was floor length and covered her feet?)

Really really feeling Mary Elizabeth’s dress. So pretty. Looks like confetti!

I love Renee’s dress! Claire’s is pretty too though I don’t love shiny fabrics.

Yeah, those two look the best. Congrats to Renee on her win, I haven’t been lucky enough to see her on stage but “Satisfied” is my favorite song off the Hamilton soundtrack!

      • LizLemonGotMarried says:

I love when she comes in during the Reynold’s Pamphlet (I think) and is like, I hope you’re satisfied…I love the whole song Satisfied, but that little section just makes my heart ache with the beauty and pain.

Same, I love Claire’s for the 90s slipdress vibe.

  8. Jayna says:

I absolutely loved it on her. I loved the simplicity of the gown on her and the color, the soft muted shade of pink on her. I agree with #Locke Lamora. I give it a 10 also.

    Bobby Cannavale looks hoooooooooooottttttttttt

    Rose’s dress is hideous.

  11. Mike says:

Saoirse looks miserable every time she’s on a red carpet. I wonder if the attention makes her uncomfortable?

  12. Carol says:

Saoirse, Clare and Renee look fabulous to me. Love the colors, and the simplicity of Clare’s and saoirse’s dresss

  13. Starkiller says:

I’m not as bothered by Saoirse’s dress as I am by her makeup. Her foundation is way too light, and that eyeshadow is rank.

I never really had an opinion on Rose Byrne other than thinking she was gorgeous, but that was ruined by an interview I recently heard in which she came off as smug, self-obsesse and a generally nasty person. Her date may actually have the most smug expression I’ve ever seen, so I suppose here well-matched.

Claire’s makeup is a hot mess as well and that dress looks like a negligee, but I’m more concerned about her husband, who appears to have aged 10 years in several months. Is he ill??

Mary Elezabeth Winstead (who?) looks like an idiot. Way overdressed.

I’m not familiar with Renee Goldsberry, but she’s the only person in this post who looks nice.

I think Saoirse looks gobsmackingly beautiful in that dress.
