Duchess Kate repeats a red Catherine Walker ensemble: fab or drab?

RED HEELS!!!!!!

Duchess Kate is wearing red heels! No wedges of doom. No nude pumps. No beige stilettos. She’s wearing honest-to-God red heels! And they’re good, aren’t they? I also have to say, I’ve always had a great deal of affection for Kate in red. She wears a lot of blue, probably because she A) thinks blue is her signature color and B) wants everything to match Big Blue, her sapphire engagement ring. But red looks amazing on her and she wears it too infrequently.

These photos are from yesterday’s Order of the Garter ceremony at Windsor Castle, William and Kate’s fourth public outing in as many days. Kate’s Catherine Walker dress and coat were repeats, but I actually didn’t remember them. She wore this ensemble for the first time in 2011, during her first royal tour to Canada. She actually styled it differently this time too – she wore her hair back and she wore a rather fancy hat. She accessorized with the same diamond drop earrings that she wore for her wedding (purchased as a gift by her parents), a silver pendant (which she has been wearing a lot lately) and an Art Deco-ish bracelet, which we’ve seen before. I’m totally fine with the whole look. And I’ll say again: she should seriously consider adding more red pieces to her wardrobe. And just say no to nude heels!

Meanwhile, Vanity Fair reports that William and Kate will be stopping by the Royal Ascot this week “much to the Queen’s delight.”

After a spectacular turn out for the Queen’s 90th birthday over the weekend, the royals will be out in full force again this week to celebrate Royal Ascot. Royal Watch has learned that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will make their debut at the annual race meet/high-society outing in Berkshire, much to the Queen’s delight. In the past, William and Kate have always turned down offers to join the Queen and her guests in the Royal Enclosure, but this year they are turning out as a birthday surprise for the Queen, who has attended every Royal Meeting at the Ascot during her reign.

“They know how much Ascot means to the Queen and they will be there for one day this week,” says a source about the event, which commences Tuesday. “They will enjoy an afternoon in the royal box with Her Majesty.”

[From Vanity Fair]

What’s interesting to me is that the Queen has requested their presence apparently multiple times over the past five years and they were always too “busy,” I suppose? I always imagined that when the Queen asks you to go somewhere, it’s not a request, it’s an order. However will William and Kate recuperate from this harried work schedule? I mean, they’ll be doing five events in one week! That’s a lot of keen-ness.

I agree she looks great in red. I’d love to see her try some different styles like the other European Princess but we have her hair up and no nude heels. Baby steps. Baby steps.

    • Vava says:

Well enjoy the red outfit because today in Northern Ireland she is Duchess Bland. Beige, beige, and more BEIGE. Awful.

    • Hknowles says:

Hate the red shoes, but I’m American so maybe it’s cultural? We don’t do red shoes here, and she’s wearing a hella LOT of color in these photos. But to each his own!

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

What is with the lame silver pendant? I would wear that with jeans and a t-shirt. She wears it with her wedding earrings? And yesterday with those big round earrings? Stop. It. She has access to some of the most exquisite jewelry in the world and it’s just wasted on her.
She does look pretty in red. And I love, love her hair that way.

    • Lisa says:

I’m thinking that either Kate’s to afraid to ask for use of the Royal jewels because she surely doesn’t earn her keep or the Queen has refused her requests for the use of them for the same reason.

      • Snazzy says:

I would kind of love it if the Queen said “no” to her using the jewels 🙂

      • Megan says:

I don’t think she is comfortable wearing big, flashy jewels. She has always preferred small, subtle pieces.

      • Llamas says:

I actually snorted at the thought of the queen saying “no” with the most unimpressed face ever.

    • Hudson Girl says:

Seriously, Gnat. I’m gonna be a blunt bitch and say that her jewelry always reminds me of this cheesy mall store- Zales.
Do a google images search for Zales jewelry.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I don’t think she could pull it off. Could she? She’s a very slim woman, big jewelry might look garish on her. Diana sometimes looked like she could fall over any second when she was wearing some of the flashier jewelry.

    • Vava says:

I love this entire ensemble, except for that necklace. It doesn’t work with the neckline.

Love the hat, the shoes, the earrings and bracelet, the coat dress, and her hair. This is one of her best looks so far this year. Like Alix says below, I’m ‘very keen’ on the whole thing, too. LOL

    • notasugarhere says:

The “lame” silver pendant is one of three very similar ones she has. Small, circular, tiny diamonds. They cost between $2500-3500 each.

    • HollyG says:

If it’s a small round pendant that looks like (Celtic?) openwork, set with diamonds, then she’s worn it to all events in the last week. Possibly she wears it frequently, but hidden under her neckline.

I love the red coatdress, and I’d like a closer look at the shoes. The teeny pix on my phone look like velvet uppers, which I refuse to believe anybody is wearing in June.

      • HollyG says:

I just realized that William is wearing…a cape. Is it an invisibility cloak that allows him to evade the media?

      • bluhare says:

It’s the uniform of the Knights of the Garter which hasn’t changed much since the 16th century. Including the feathered hats.

    • Hazel says:

It’s not silver, but a small dismond pendant of maybe white gold or platinum. Still boring. And sure, red shoes, great, but with an all-red outfit? I’d have preferred these shoes with any of her all-blue outfits. And the red of her dress isn’t the same red as her coat. That kind of thing bugs me.

  3. Alix says:

Outfit is amazing. She looks fantastic in red. I’m very keen on the whole thing.

  4. Goats on the Roof says:

I can’t complain too much about it as she looks pretty good. I love her wedding earrings.

    • Tourmaline says:

I know I think this is the first time she’s worn them in public since her wedding. Also the blingy (for her) diamond bracelet. Kind of surprised she busted out the fanciest stuff for Order of the Garter but no complaints.

      • mary s says:

The jewelry is very pretty, she should wear those earrings more often. The red dress looks good on her.

  5. CidySmiley says:

I like! It makes her look alive! Red is a good color on her, it’s good to not see her in the same blues, greens and pale pinks. This is good!

  6. Margo S. says:

Why does she keep repeating outfits? Can’t she afford a different outfit every outing? It’s not like she does a lot of them…

    • Goats on the Roof says:

She’s not doing enough to earn her keep as is and you want her to spend MORE on clothing?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Exactly. It’s the one “frugal” thing she does. She already spends tens of thousands of pounds on clothes every year.

      • hmmm says:

Smoke and mirrors, IMO. I think for every outfit she repeats often once, she buys thousands and thousands of pounds worth of new outfits. And the prices seem to be escalating as well. Not to mention that awful, ridiculously expensive Cartier jewellery.

      • notasugarhere says:

Minus the jewelry, she’s over $50,000 in new clothes this year and it is only June!

      • Senaber says:

I really like seeing repeats when they are styled differently.

      • Llamas says:

In that case her clothing for 7 mo could pay for 2 1/2 years of my college tuition. Nice. Hope she enjoys wearing said tuition.

      • La Ti Da says:

Her closet begs so many questions! What she is doing with all the clothes she purchases? Is she one of those women who have rows and rows of items that still bear the price tag? Its not as if she has no where to wear them to. Perhaps she isn’t actually buying much, but window shopping as a hobby? Maybe the shopping is retail therapy taken to a hoarding extreme? Because if she truly shops as much as is reported I can’t fathom not wanting to wear all of it. I guess Kate just tools around Anmer Hall dressed to the nines. I just don’t get it.

      • Amber says:

Well, WELL! over $50K @Nota. 😀 She wore $50,000 of clothing and accessories on the India/Bhutan trip. ($1,500 for four pairs of nude/blush shoes alone. I’ll never get over it.) She debuted that $3K Roland Mouret dress the other day. (With the $50,000 earrings of course.) There was the bespoke, Ice-Queen, coat dress from Walker which cost 5, 7, $10K+? Who knows? That was a new Philip Treacy hat at the Trooping. That’s another $300-7K. (I sh*t you not. This hat https://royalhats.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/philip-treacy-wave-beret.jpg?w=260&h=361 was $1,164. And this one was $557 http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/autumn-phillips-attends-ladies-day-on-day-3-of-royal-ascot-at-ascot-picture-id170924630. Let’s say Kate’s was $500.) These are new $700 pumps. The baby nursery, zipper dress she wore yesterday was $690-1,400. That’s a minimum of $12,000, not including jewelry, in a week when she repeated many things. If she’s been caught wearing new, designer gear boarding a helicopter back to Amner and shopping wearing thousands of dollars worth of clothes, I can’t imagine the bill that Chuck gets every month.

  7. Betti says:

Am sure their is a holiday to Mustique already booked so they can recuperate from all the ‘keen’ work they’ve been doing the past few weeks. Poor snowflakes must be exhausted.

  8. cindyp says:

Too much red; she looks like a stick of red licorice. Why are her outfits always so monochromatic? She needs a print or scarf. She just can’t wear clothes in a way that make them look elegant.

    • Jules says:

IKR? It’s like she picks her clothing colors from a basic box of crayons……………..

  9. cerys says:

She suits red and although it is another coat dress the whole outfit looks good. The only thing that put me off is seeing how muscular the backs of her legs have become. Yuk

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, flab is so much more attractive.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

I don’t think they look overly muscular at all. She looks toned.

    • justme says:

Gee — I was thinking how great her legs look! Nicely shaped and with defined muscles 🙂

    • Amanduh says:

Cerys: I have some advice for you- don’t look at the backs of her legs if they “put you off” so much. I’m surprised you can even see them all the way up there on that horse of yours…
Quite frankly, the backs of her legs are none of your business.

    • Cerys says:

Oh dear, I seem to have rattled a few cages. Lol x

    • hmmm says:

I agree with you, @Cerys. There’s no softness now. Chicken legs when she curtsies, and her legs look kinda stringy. There’s no fat there.

    • l_invo says:

You are absolutely right cerys. Her legs are awful. They really overly muscular. I saw it years ago. I don’t like calf muscle like hers. I don’t understand women with such horrible muscles who wear short skirts/dresses. And did you saw her toes? Photo from India. Her 4 and 5 toes are deformed. She loves to wear too narrow shoes.

@Amanduh – it’s none of your business what someone want to discuss!

      • Amanduh says:

…um, we’re on a public forum, genius. Of course it’s my business. I’m not the one complaining about someone’s body not conforming to my own standards.

  10. Starlight says:

Lovely – Lovely suits her colouring she has a very 1940s look about her with the hairstyle. Is she reading the blog!?!?! I would love to count how many frock coats she has in her wardrobe. I was a bit surprised Duchess Sophie wore a short sleeve bolero cardigan with her dress (not sure about that decision).

  11. bellebottomblues says:

Wondering the same thing about the jewelry,….maybe just restricted to special occasions, i.e. the chinese ambassador dinner etc.
Do we see Camilla in much borrowed jewels?
So curious how its done though lol
does HM offer some items before an engagement or does Kate shop the vault?
    Wouldnt that be keen?

  12. Eleonor says:

Red heels and a chignon !!! I really like when she keeps her hair up.

  13. Natalie says:

Didn’t Will and Kate go to Ascot in 2011? Kate wore a poufy white skirt and a collarless white jacket. edit: my mistake: it was the Epsom Derby

Carole and Michael were invited to ride in the carriages in 2012, and then that was it, I think. No more Middletons in the royal enclosure.

  14. sophie says:

Love the look even though it’s monochromatic. For Kate, everything was really spot on, especially her hair! AND she looked happy and rested. As someone else said – baby steps.

An errant thought. Was Eugenie, who garnered huge points for her two red outfits this past week, the impetus for Kate to wear red? Hmmm.

  15. mellie says:

She can sure wear that color beautifully!

  16. Capepopsie says:

    She looks good!
I’m sure she is trying to satisfy you
    all, ladies!
    😏

  17. ShazBot says:

She looks tanned, right? I noticed that with Trooping the Colour. She looks tanned, rested and happy. Secret vacay? About to be pregnant again??

  18. hmmm says:

They condescend to finally show up for Ascot at the Queen’s request? Well, aren’t they special.

    Red is her best colour.

    • Megan says:

They have never had an interest in horse racing so I think it is nice that they are going for the Queen’s b-day. I hope they bring George, too.

      • notasugarhere says:

They go to Cheltenham and Epsom regularly, and he goes out to the races with his buddies sans family. It is only doing something with the royals where they decide, “No” until they are assured of being the centers of attention. Like boycotting Christmas until they got to march ahead of everyone else for the pap stroll.

Finally showing up at Ascot after all these years? Yep, they’ll take the attention from HM. Odds on Kate Middleton wearing a new outfit with a skirt that blows up? Or shoehorning her family into the lineup somehow?

      • Megan says:

They last went to Epsom in 2011 and Cheltenham in 2013. To me, that does not qualify as regularly attending.

As for taking the attention from HM, how is that W+K’s fault? They have proven repeatedly that have absolutely no clue as to how to control the press.

      • notasugarhere says:

Merely stating that they have attended other races so do have an interest. You made it sound as if they’d never been seen at a racecourse. And he has been papped attending since with his drinking buddies.

They control the press all the time, with their private viewing of the kids, the banning of certain reporters and photographers from events, the hand-picked invication-only pap stroll (aka their daughter’s christening), the debacles on the India tour.

They choose their appearances and timing of them for maximum attention to themselves when they want it. Like her wearing all red to the Jubilee when most others were in pastels, brand new $50,000 in tanzanite jewelry at a memorial service when expecting, etc.

Flashy, showy, grabbing the headlines when they want them. Plays press games just like his mum when she hopped on Charles’s car hood in order to take attention from Fergie. If only Wm had any of her caring or work ethic, which all went to Harry instead.

      • Megan says:

And many headlines they don’t want like Workshy Willie and Duchess of Drab.

  19. maum says:

Red looks good on her but it is way too matchy! She needs a different colour hat/bag/shoes.

    Hasn’t anyone told her that?

  20. Rapunzel says:

I love the shoes. And the hat. The coat looks slightly ill fitting to me, somehow.

I don’t think her jewelry is inappropriate either; these are day events, and I think it’s fine to go simple.

    • Vava says:

The coat is hanging on her. She either is at an all-time low weight (because in Canada she was shockingly gaunt) or she just isn’t wearing padded bras like she did back then.

  21. JulieM says:

Kate looks good in this outfit. I like red on her, but it’s too monochromatic, head to toe. I don’t know, black shoes, or something. But, one of her better looks. I can be positive about Kate when I try.

Related subject: this was the Garter Ceremony. When does Harry get the garter? He deserves it much more than his lazy brother; although I recognize Bills’ place ahead of his brother in line. Any thoughts?

    • Feeshalori says:

Membership in the Order is extremely limited and can’t exceed a certain number, which l believe is 24. I had heard that the next vacancy may go to Harry and I really hope it’s true because the Ginger Prince really deserves it.

      • Megan says:

Two new members were installed today. Not sure why Harry was passed over.

      • justme says:

William was installed pretty early because he is the heir. Other younger sons have had to wait. Both Prince Andrew and Prince Edward were not installed until 2006. It may be that Harry will not be installed until Charles is king. Charles himself has been in since 1958 and Anne was installed in 1994.

William was the 1,000 Knight of the Garter – so that was also probably a reason he was installed when he was.

      • Llamas says:

Probably because they don’t want Harry to outshine the dearest chosen one, Willie boy.

      • Feeshalori says:

I didn’t know that, Megan, it does make you wonder then why Harry wasn’t inducted.

      • notasugarhere says:

As justme said, the younger siblings (ie. non-heirs) are not usually inducted until years later. Andrew, HM’s favorite, wasn’t inducted until 2006 along with Philip’s favorite Edward. Likely Harry will not be inducted until Charles is king. Wm was inducted as the 1000th one during the jubilee year as a PR move.

      • Canadian Becks says:

I knew Andrew is HMs favourite…but isn’t Phillips favourite, Anne?

  22. MinnFinn says:

She does look great in red. And this outfit is very appropriate. But I dislike this assemblage because it looks chaotic and mismatched with the slightly different shades of red in the coat, dress and shoes. She tries to pull the elements together with the hat but it doesn’t do the job. The coat looks faded/worn against the darker red dress and the shoe texture (suede or velvet?) draws too much attention to her feet.

  23. JoyJoy says:

Could someone explain the clutch thing to me? Its so annoying that she’s always gripping it like a lifeline. Why not be hands free? It’s not like she doesn’t have assistants or bodyguards to carry necessities.

    • Llamas says:

      Wants attention to her crotch

      • Joannie says:

LMAO! Attention to her crotch? What the hell for? For some reason I find that comment so funny. I was awake all night. Horny cats fighting outside my bedroom window.

    • Sarah says:

I think she glows onto that clutch so hard because it’s anxiety; I saw a pic of Camilla holding a clutch yesterday, she had gloves in one hand and her clutch in her other, holding it normally at her side, with ONE HAND!! Can you imagine!!! O) she must ask Camilla haw she does it!,

I do like her in red., though.

  24. Fireweaver says:

The necklace isn’t silver. It’s the empress necklace from mapipn and webb. Who also made her wedding earrings.
    http://www.mappinandwebb.com/Empress-19mm-Pendant/p/12142428/

  25. L84Tea says:

I might be in the minority here, I don’t know, but I still honestly prefer “Kate Middleton” fashion rather than “Duchess Catherine” fashion. I always loved her in her jeans and boots and tweedy jackets. That and I don’t like this rather frumpy turn she’s taken this past year, although she looks nice in this red.

  26. kodakay says:

    She looks lovely, as usual.

  27. LAB says:

I looked up the dress from her previous wear…and it looked better before, it seemed to fit better?
However, hair up and coloured shoes? Win.

  28. Kelly says:

Awesome hat. I want a hat like that and a place to wear it. Somehow Northern Arizona is not going to comply.

  29. Joannie says:

She’s beautiful and very classy. I don’t mind her jewellery. I find too much jewellery to look gaudy no matter the price.

  30. YankLynn says:

I dont feel like she needs to wear crown jewels necessarily. I’m one who wpuld like to see her wear more upscale “costume” necklaces or bracelets at some of the less formal day events anyway. I don’t know but suspect there must be some great designers she could promote AND liven up thse outfits. Again I blame poor styling and a lack of self awareness about that shortcoming. I certainly know that I would need that support in her shoes. I do “like her” in red but it kinda looks like she let George play “find a red dress, find a red coat, find a red hat ….” and then she threw it all on, with the necklace that’s been on the nightstand all week.

    • MinnFinn says:

LOL Now that you mention George helping her dress, today’s 50 shades of red remind me of how all of my nieces coordinated their outfits when they were really young. They assemble outfits based on the predominate color of each item. So pink pants, top and shoes go together because they are all pink. I doesn’t matter what shade of pink or what type of print.

  31. Citresse says:

I like red on Catherine. I also saw DM photos of her in Northern Ireland and thought she looked good except for the choice of hat. The hemlines are longer and she’s working at keeping her hair looking controlled while stylish. Now if she’d only give a speech.

  32. marcelle1 says:

give her a break! Kate has had two children in short order and the Queen is fine with her and William spending time with them. I think she has learned from her own mistakes… we all do.

    • Sarah says:

How do you know the Queen is fine with their laziness? Did she tell you?

And you do know that people who have babies can work? What would she work, about 5 hours a week?? And has a nanny at home. The poor dear!!!! She must be exhausted!

  33. CharlotteCharlotte says:

The photoshop on her leg and shoe stepping out of the car is crazy. It looks cartoonish. Why? Was she about to step into something??
