Angelina Jolie’s kids want to learn different languages & become musicians

Here are some photos of Angelina Jolie, Knox Jolie-Pitt, Maddox Jolie-Pitt and James Haven leaving LA and arriving in NYC. I haven’t seen James Haven, Angelina’s brother, in what feels like a long time. James and Angelina have always been close, but for years now, James rarely gives interviews or speaks about his sister in any way. It’s pretty rare to see photos of them together these days, although I don’t doubt that James is a doting uncle.

On Friday, Angelina was the guest editor for BBC Radio Four’s Women’s Hour – you can listen to the whole show here. She guest-edited ahead of World Refugee Day (today), and she was just doing more work on behalf of her many refugee-centered and women’s rights-centered humanitarian work. But she also got personal about her family, and there were some great quotes. Some highlights:

All the kids are multilingual: “It’s been very interesting, all the kids are learning different languages. I asked them what languages they are learning and wanted to learn and Shi’s learning Khmer, which is the Cambodian language, Pax is focusing on Vietnamese, Mad has taken on German and Russian. Z’s speaking French. Vivienne really wanted to learn Arabic and Knox is learning sign language. It suppose it just means you don’t know who you’re children are until they show you who you are and they’re just becoming whoever they want to be… they are interested in other cultures”.

None of the kids want to act: “None of my kids want to be actors. They are actually very interested in being musicians. I think they like the process of film from the outside. Mad is interested in editing. Pax loves music and deejaying.”

BRCA gene, double mastectomy & oophorectomy: “I thought that I had gained information that I wish my mother would have known, I wish she’d had the option, I wish she’d had the surgery, in fact, it might have given her more years with my family. I think it’s really important that we all share anything we learn and we stay connected. I believe in the way women can share and support each other….”

The wider conversation about women’s health: “It means a great deal to me. If there is even one woman out there who went and got checked and found that she had cancer or she was positive and she caught something in time, and if in any small way I was a part of that, it makes me very emotional.”

Giving birth to Shiloh in Namibia: “I went to a hospital in Namibia, where I was having my daughter, and I was in breech. I needed a C-section, and I knew I was in breech because I had had the money to have an ultrasound. But I found even the local hospital with many, many women – and this was a good hospital – did not have an ultrasound machine. So the amount of women that didn’t know they were in breech, the amount of babies and complications when they got into labor, with one simple machine. But I know there are many extraordinary people who are working on this and women’s health around the world, and many groups dedicated solely to that, and their work is so needed and these solutions can come.”

I want to hear Zahara speak French! Hell, I’d love to hear the kids speak in any language. I also think it’s funny/interesting that none of the kids give a crap about acting. I would have thought that maybe the littlest ones (Vivienne and Knox) might show an interest, but I guess not. I still think Brad and Angelina will have at least one actor with six kids. And maybe one deejay, although I don’t think deejaying should be the career end-goal. Music producer, songwriter, musician? Sure, aim for one of those. But how can you aim to be a deejay?

Knox is finally looking more and more like Brad to me.. they even have the same haircut right now. Angie is in NYC for World Refugee Activities. She is to is meeting with John Kerry at the State Department tonight.

there are pics of her taking Knox and Maddox to see Hamilton yesterday. Busy time in NYC.. I can’t get over how flawless her skin is. Just amazing.

  2. Eleonor says:

Of course the Empress speaks French, how can she talk with Choupette and Karl Lagerfeld ???

    • doofus says:

      lol…RIGHT?!

I think that’s great that the kids are learning other languages. that always serves you well in an international world. in that pic of her by herself, sort of from the side? she looks so lovely.

but I never would have recognized James Haven if you hadn’t ID’d him. he looks frail, and older than his years. hope he’s ok.

      • roses says:

I noticed that about her brother as well. I guess could just be the angles of the photos but as you said hope he’s ok.

    • Starkiller says:

Or maybe she just, you know, wanted to learn French? It’s not exactly an obscure language-it’s spoken by north of 200 million people worldwide either natively or as a second language, and it’s a lingua Franca in many parts of the world-for kids who travel as much as they do, it’s a very useful language to learn.

Angie’s dress is amazing and looks SO COMFY. Any clue, fashionistas, where we can find one?!

    • lisa2 says:

      The Dailyfail says Antonio Berardi

    • Carol says:

What I don’t get is how she can wear heels everywhere…the airport, store etc. I wish I had her feet because mine would be in so much pain in those heels.

  4. Miss M says:

So all her kids chose the languages they want to learn at a very young age?! They are truly gifted…

    • lisa2 says:

They travel a lot.. And get to hear lots of different languages. That broadens your awareness of other cultures and languages. I think it would be good if every child had to learn a 2nd language while they are young. It is easier then. We live in a Global world. Great that they have parents that understand that.

      • Miss M says:

I am not disagreeing on the importance of learning another language. I speak 3 and currently learnihg a 4th. I have never heard a child asking to learn this or that language…

      • lisa2 says:

Maybe they asked them what languages they would like to learn.

    • lower-case deb says:

it could also be that she or brad was the one who prompted them to learn a language to begin with. rather than the children waking up one christmas morning saying they want to learn such and such language.

could be that at some point she sat them down (or even individually when they hit a certain age) and told them: okay now you must pick a language to learn… but let the children decide the specific language according to what they fancy.

certainly i’m not claiming to have heard their conversation but despite how they come to learn it, i agree with the others, starting another language young seems to be better.

however, i’m not sure why she should say “thank god” so flippantly about actors. sure some actors can be a bit of an arse, but its a good, respectable profession. the rest of her talk is okay, but the thank god seems to be a bit flippant.

on the topic of the radio segment, the whole segment is very good if a bit heavy on the heart, but i think the testimony of the midwife touched me the most.

    • Esmom says:

I think the snark is unnecessary, clearly this family is atypical in how much they travel and how many places they have visited. Languages are probably on their radar much more than the average kids like mine. And even average suburban kids do think about the languages they want to learn, too, my niece has talked from a very young age about wanting to learn different languages.

    • Tiny Martian says:

More likely, one of them did, and the others followed suit, as can often be the case in families with lots of kids. One kid wants to play the violin, and then the next thinks, “hey, good idea!” and winds up playing cello. Same thing.

    • Mean Hannah says:

My son is almost 5 and he chose to learn Spanish about a year ago. He is not interested in learning my native language (Korean) at all, but he is learning Japanese and Mandarin. No one around us speak these languages he chose, though he’s heard them spoken in person and on TV/Internet, so I don’t know where he got the idea.

  5. Colette says:

I think it’s interesting Viv wants to learn Arabic,I guess she met someone who spoke Arabic. My cousin who is 10 is studying Japanese which is atypical for a African American boy living in Texas. He became friends with a Japanese American boy a couple of years ago and begged his parents to let him study that language.

    • Ennie says:

I think they are friendly with the Jordanian King and Queen, due to Angelina’s UNCHR work. They might have visited recently. Remember also how Shiloh went to visit with AJ a camp in Jordan or Lebanon, I think where that little girl from Syria who cares for her family is. Can’t remember her name, (I checked she is Hala) it was a very sad story. Shiloh probably told them something about when they were there.

  6. Talie says:

As long as they continue to be raised outside of LA…they will want to do other things. I suspect Shiloh will continue her mother’s work, which is why she already does trips with her.

  7. sushi says:

Angelina looks beautiful and healthy. I hope I do not have to read another faked concern about her thinness.

    • lisa2 says:

      It’s still early..

    • B n A fn says:

You will be reading fake concerns about Angelina’s health as long as she is with her husband Brad Pitt. There are a lot of jealous people out on the Internet. The good thing is, Angelina don’t read the comments posted about her.

  8. Almondjoy says:

Awesome! Children can learn languages really fast. I love when children are allowed to be explorative and choose their interests I stead of being pushed into things they really don’t like by their parents. Learning a new language really opens up so many opportunities and allows children to see the world in a different light.

I hope Zahara also learns Amharic, her native language. And sign language is one of my first loves, I know Knox will have tons of fun with it.

  9. CornyBlue says:

It is good that she is getting her children to learn languages at a young age. I have known three languages since i was like 2 and cannot remember putting any effort at all . But I found it so hard to learn like some other language when I was 18.

    • Starkiller says:

When we’re kids, our brains are like sponges-that starts to take a dive around age 7. Before then it’s very easy to learn languages. I was basically raised bilingual and am pretty fluent in two other languages and like you say, I don’t remember “trying” to learn the first two, but the ones I learned later took a LOT of effort. Grammatically speaking I am fluent but when speaking I always feel a bit…stilted?

      • lucy2 says:

Definitely makes a huge difference to start learning young, and I think the younger you are, the more you retain. A lot of my friends’ kids are learning at very young ages, it’s great.

  10. MrsBPitt says:

For some reason Knox is my fav of all the Jolie-Pitt kids (love them all, really)…he just seems to have that cool vibe that Brad has! I think that if any of the kids go into acting, it will be Knox…

  11. Ademinda says:

Again with the all black. TRY A LITTLE COLOR! She looks perptually depressed.

    • Zut alors! says:

I think she’s doing it to personally aggravate you, anonymous person on the internet. To which I say, keep rocking the black Angelina. You do you.

  12. EscapedConvent says:

These are obviously happy kids. Angelina and Brad must be doing some things right.

  13. Ravensdaughter says:

    No shade on this comment-really.
It’s interesting to see what kids aspire to and how they fulfill their aspirations in an environment that is completely open to self-actualization.
These kids have a top notch learning environment and they don’t have to worry about chasing money. If only more kids could have this opportunity, I think the world would be a much better place.
Think of Chelsea Clinton and what she has accomplished in a similar environment.

  14. Tris says:

I try and I try, and I just can’t fault her. I love that she said, “I could afford an ultrasound”. How many rich idiots even understand that most people on earth could not afford basic medical care? This is a good woman, and a good family.

  15. India Andrews says:

Angelina does love her neutrals-gray, white and black. If I had her looks and money I would mix it up.
