Prince William spent the night before his 34th b-day in France, watching football

One of the advantages of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s consistently sloth-like work ethic is that they get to “count” really fun activities as “work.” This has always been the case! So here are some photos of William working on Monday. He went to France to cheer on Team England at the UEFA Euro 2016 games. England was playing Slovakia yesterday, and I watched 30 boring minutes of the game while I was at the gym. ESPN even showed William’s bespectacled face briefly. This appearance wasn’t just work – he was also having some fun ahead of his 34th birthday, which is today. William is a Cancer, just like his mother. William is actually spending the first part of his birthday in Paris, but he’s going back home today to spend the rest of his birthday celebrating “privately.”

Soccer fanatic Prince William will wake up in France on his birthday after cheering on England’s soccer team on Monday night. William, who turns 34 on Tuesday, headed to the match between England and Slovakia in the French city of Saint Etienne. He’ll travel back home early on Tuesday and will spend his birthday “privately,” a royal source tells PEOPLE.

William attended Monday night’s game as president of the Football Association, which runs the game in England. Just before the game began, William joined in singing the British national anthem, “God Save the Queen.”

[From People]

I wonder what he has planned for his b-day celebrations (probably not flying a shift with the EAAA). Will and Kate usually do private celebrations for their birthdays, and I doubt there’s anything too extravagant planned. Probably just a private dinner, maybe a small party at Anmer Hall.

Will and Kate are actually saving their strength for Wednesday night, which is when they’ll be co-hosting a fundraiser at Houghton Hall with Marquess of Cholmondeley. We heard about this fundraiser back in April, and I still don’t know why the Cambridges can’t be bothered to open their home for a fundraiser for one of Kate’s charities (East Anglia Children’s Hospices). Instead, 90 or so people will make the trip to Houghton Hall and pay something like £6,000 per head for a lavish dinner. People Magazine actually had an exclusive piece about the fundraiser and how “a select group of Michelin-starred chefs” will be preparing a “taste of Norfolk” for the assembled guests – you can read the full piece here. Kate also has no plans to make any kind of rousing fundraising speech at the event. I bet she’ll enjoy seeing a grand estate though.

Should’ve gone to watch Wales for a less dismal evening.

    • Amelia says:

      Wales CRUSHED IT #DragonPower
As someone who doesn’t have a dog in this race but is forced to keep up with the results for work, I love the matches that completely subvert the predictions.
Like Iceland drawing against Portugal 😀

      • Sixer says:

I’m half Welsh and can’t stand most of the England players, so am loving it!

      • LAK says:

Wait, Iceland has a football team? One good enough to be in this tournament?

Ps: Full disclosure, i’m a rugby fan, but i am sort of aware of football.

      • Amelia says:

I have family who have retired to Pembrokeshire, so Wales are definitely my first choice of home countries over England when it comes to flag-waving 🙂

LAK, I know, I was surprised too! Sweden qualified as well, so I’m flying all the Scandi flags at work just to piss all the England fans off.
As a bonus, so many of the Icelandic players are ridiculously attractive to look at.
I mean, it’s silly. The same goes for Belgium.

      • LAK says:

        Ha.

Goodlooking you say? 🤔😊 in that case, i will watch a game. For research purposes only. I promise.

      • Sixer says:

        I also prefer rugby.

10% of the population of Iceland attended their first Euro match!

      • spidey says:

Sixer, apparently 9 of the Welsh squad are English. 😆

      • Sixer says:

        Lalala. Can’t hear you, spidey!

      • bluhare says:

Mr. bluhare was quite annoyed he missed a good match to watch England. Both matches were on at the same time over here, and he picked England. I said he should have known better!

Also (almost) half Welsh here, Sixer. Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia. It explains my inner Celtic princess, along with the Irish and Scots. 🙂

      • SnazzyIsAlive says:

That Iceland game made me so happy. Ronaldo’s such a big baby

    • Locke Lamora says:

But how bad is France at organising?
I’m Croatian, and at our game against Czheck Republic ( I can not believe we didn’t win) the whole flare debacle happened. It was done by a small group of hooligans who are trying to rebel against the Croatian FA by getting the national team disqualified. The whole thing was planned, they even announced at what minute it will happen and everything. The Croatian police warned the French in advance, and they still managed to get the flares in. ISIS could have blown things up ten times by now.

    • Pip says:

The Reykjavik Grapevine live tweeted the Portugal v Iceland game & it was hilarious – I’d highly recommend following them.

  2. OSTONE says:

My three lions need to get it together! England qualified for the round of 16, but they need to bring it in order to advance further. What a day in the “office” for normal Bill though. He has it tough!

    • dodgy says:

Hodgson still doesn’t know his best XI. in addition his training methods are said to be a bit… lax? Whatever happens, he can’t continue beyond 2016 for the sake of our young and upcoming players. Dier, Kane, Alli, et al deserve a coach to get the best out of their international careers.

  3. birdy says:

Of course they can’t host at their place – Carol is too busy trying to snare pippa a husband to plan, manage and host it for them.

    • Megan says:

Houghton Hall is a magnificent Palladin palace built by Sir Robert Walpole. It is many magnitudes grander than Anmer Hall or Kensington Palace. The venue is a huge draw in and of itself.

    • bluhare says:

Actually, she’s probably working on a wife for James. Gossip has her not caring for his girlfriend. Apparently she likes Pippa’s boyfriend.

  4. iseepinkelefants says:

Woke up alone in Paris? Didn’t want to bring the wife? If that was my husband and he was going to a match I’d be like why can’t I go? Granted I live in Paris and am having this footie tournament ruin my daily life, but if I wasn’t and I had enough money to fly in and out of.

    • Amelia says:

I feel the need to apologise on behalf of the small, British contingent of morons wreaking havoc across your beautiful country <3
(Whether or not that includes Willnot, I leave for you to decide!)

    • Sixer says:

Apologies from me, too. I have done many cringes.

  5. Astrid says:

I’m a little skeptical of how the money thing works for the charity. 90 people pay some crazy money to raise about 700K for the evening while the charity needs 14M and somehow the food is bought and prepared by famous chefs at someone’s estate?

    • Azurea says:

Well, Astrid, you know the filthy rich have to be rewarded for their largesse.

    • Megan says:

EACH has a diversified fundraising plan. Some money is raised through grants, some through EACH’s charity shops, some from direct donations, and some from events. It is pretty standard for food and other items for the event to be donated.

  6. LAK says:

Kate is not hosting. The EACH statement goes into alot of detail of other patrons of the charity, their contribution to the charity as well as the evening, and as an afterthought thank Kate and William for attending.

PR is spinning it as if she’s hosting, she’s not.

The Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley are hosting. WK are merely attending.

    Here is the EACH statement

    https://www.each.org.uk/about-us/media-centre/details/each-announces-a-taste-of-norfolk-at-houghton-hall

    • notasugarhere says:

Thank you LAK for bringing the facts. Doubtful W&K have done anything more than reluctantly agree to make a brief appearance. This is their new brand of royal – least amount of work for them, take credit for everyone else getting it done. #jasonweseeyou

    • Megan says:

When the event was first announced, she was billed as the host. Perhaps she has since reduced her role to special guest.

      • hmmm says:

I remember it was spun that way. And I don’t recall Willy being on the program at the time. Lazy bugger. When was the last time he did a shift?

      • LAK says:

I do remember, but at the time it was in a newspaper article, probably the DM, without much detail beyond Kate hosting a fundraiser for EACH at Houghton Hall.

William wasn’t included in the original article. It was vague enough about details to be believeable.

The statement on EACH website was posted recently, long after that original article, but who looks at EACH’s website after that initial misleading publicity?

      • Megan says:

@hmmm A few weeks ago the DM had a pics of W responding to a call. Not sure if they bought pics from someone, or if they have an ambulance chasing helicopter.

    • Chicken says:

The neighborhood association that I’m the president of hosts an annual fundraiser (proceeds go to our local low-income elementary school, our park, and neighborhood maintenance and art) and we call it Taste of the Fourth, as “Fourth” is part of the name of our neighborhood. We even bring in locally famous chefs, just like A Taste of Norfolk. I like that a bunch of middle-class volunteers from Georgia in good old US of A have the same idea for a fundraiser as the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley (which I understand is pronounced “Chumly” but to me looks like Choll – monn – delay).

    • notasugarhere says:

Another weird mix-up because W&K keep changing their minds? Remember the Winter White Ball, where she was on the original invitations then their PR claimed she was never supposed to attend? They blamed the charity, when the charity wouldn’t go to press with the invitations without Palace approval. Why are they always so sneaky?

      • LAK says:

In that screwup, the invitations had already gone out with both their names as hosts before she pulled out at the last minute.

They had plenty of time between the initial PR push of the event and the invitations going out for her to correct the Charity’s ‘misinformation’ yet they waited until AFTER the tickets were released to claim the charity had misinformed the receipients and the public.

Also, she pulled out on the eve of the ball, not immediately the invitations were released.

I think other charities learnt from that to wait until the very last minute possible to confirm her presence even if the media writes about their planned events indicating that she will attend because she tends to cancel at the last minute.

    • Kitty says:

My thing is, It’s very funny that Kate is attending a charity event that she is patron of but she doesn’t even visit the charities

  7. spidey says:

As President of the FA you would expect him to be there for some of the matches.

    • bluhare says:

I agree. Especially if they actually advance!!

    • Elisa the I. says:

ITA and he can cheer for England, Wales and NI, so a nice position to be in! 🙂

    • hmmm says:

      Because he’s magical? 🙂

I wonder how magical his non-presence is in his putative search and rescue job. One would think that was a more dutiful responsibility than showing up for a game.

  8. Kaz says:

Is anyone else thinking his face has morphed into a blobby sort of potato shape. Very strange.

    • KiddVicious says:

I think he’s looking more and more like Henry VIII and his Humpty Dumpty head. Don’t know the royal family tree, so I’m not sure they’re actually related.

    • LAK says:

That head shape, especially the big jaw, is from the Spencer family.

See his mother’s siblings and his grandfather and all his cousins on the Spencer side. They all have it.

  9. ClaireB says:

This post makes me feel lazy and vaguely sleazy by association for being a Cancer.

    • Starkiller says:

I feel you. I’m a Villa supporter and when I found out they were Billy’s team as well, I seriously considered changing my allegiance.

  10. Starlight says:

It’s interesting as most women I know who are spouses of husbands who own large houses do at least one charity event at their house per year whether it be afternoon tea in the gardens or a lunch with a raffle. All the more special is if the wife is a good cook or understands about party organising – I will say no more.

  11. Sonishka says:

Slovak over here. I saw your beloved Wills meeting our president. Im following the president on Facebook and was surprised that the lazy Prince is “doing” something.

  12. 600Purple says:

Houghton Hall is larger than Anmer so I suspect that is why they’re holding it there. Houghton Hall is also very impressive.

    • notasugarhere says:

It is being held there because it is the owners of Houghton who are holding and hosting the event. W&K are showing up for the bare minimum, shaking hands, and taking credit.

Also, no one will ever be allowed at Anmer outside of the Middleton family and maybe Harry.
