Margot Robbie in Gucci at the ‘Legend of Tarzan’ premiere: lovely or ridiculous?

wenn24808047

Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of The Legend of Tarzan. My gut says that this film is a total mess, which probably means that the film will make a billion dollars, because I’m terrible at predicting what bad movies people want to watch. Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard are being pushed out non-stop these days to sell this film, and they’re doing an okay job. I mostly think people are interested in Margot Robbie more than Alex, but who knows? I’m also interested in Djimon Hounsou and Samuel L Jackson’s involvement.

I’m including photos of the cast and of Skarsgard, but let’s talk about Margot’s ensemble. It’s not great, right? And it doesn’t even seem to be the right season! This “Mandarin-inspired” gown is by Gucci. It’s satin (possibly silk satin), with a high Mandarin collar and… pink fur cuffs. Like, if Gucci had made a few edits, I think this might have been interesting. Edit out the pink fur cuffs, go for some shortened sleeves and… maybe avoid those giant stripper heels, maybe? The dress also has a very high side slit, which Margot tried to work by maneuvering her body in weird directions on the carpet. The whole thing just looks uncomfortable… for a June premiere.

Alex looks good though, as does Djimon.

Margot needs a new stylist STAT.

  2. lilacflowers says:

    That’s a pretty bathrobe.

    I’m just here for Djimon.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wouldn’t that be a pretty robe? Except for the fur. I don’t understand it as a summer dress, though.

      • lilacflowers says:

I would love it as a robe but yes, I would cut off those furry pink cuffs.

    • SnazzyisAlive says:

      Yes! Totally bathrobe chic 🙂

But agreed, those pink cuffs have to go

    • SM says:

It does look like a fancy robe. Judging from the trailer, this movie does look like a total mess. Even the viking won’t make me waist two hours of my day and get me into a movie theatre to watch this mess

    • Melody says:

He has the best smile, doesn’t he?

    • Esmom says:

I love him, too. Only he could make a double breasted suit work.

I actually like Margot’s dress. For this season the only thing I’d fix is shortening the sleeves to little caps. Pretty.

    • Cali says:

      Agreed. He is superfine.

  3. Lucy2 says:

I don’t mind the dressed except for the sleeves. The guys all look good too.
I’m going to see this with some friends, it should be a fun popcorn summer kind of movie.

  4. juice says:

forget margot and alex. djimon all day. he looks fantastic in that navy suit.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

Magot is so pretty, but has terrible styling…The men all look yummy!!!

    • Kitten says:

She is STUNNING but she almost always misses fashion-wise. Shame.

      • Boo says:

Her leg in that one pose looks like it doesn’t belong to her… like a mannequin leg sticking out. That’s a very weird way to pose. I like her so I don’t really understand how her fashion and hair happened here.

I like her bathrobe but not for event or in June. The men however are looking fantastic.

      • mp says:

I think she’s so pretty that it doesn’t matter what she’s wearing, she could make a trash bag work. About the stripper heels, Margot doesn’t look short at all, but maybe because Alex is so tall, she wanted those additional inches?

      • Carol says:

SO stunning. I think she’s even more beautiful than Charlize Theron IMO. I don’t mind her bathrobe. It’s ok.

  6. ronaldinhio says:

Yeah, if the dress ended with 3/4 sleeves it would be a mile better.
    The shoes are comedic.
I really don’t get the more is more is more vibe. I think she looks nice but the fashion is a mile off.
The men all look more polished

    • Detritus says:

I was thinking about that exact thing. Just above the elbow.

And she’s so proud of those shoes. And They’re so bad. And her hair is not done in any way. I think this is a self made woman. She cannot have a stylist.

  7. Alix says:

The China-themed Met Gala was LAST year, dear.

  8. Lee says:

Love her but this outfit is a big no.

  9. Delicia says:

Why does Margot annoy me so?? Is it her smug face? Her over-acting or her surname, ‘Robbie’ – which sounds like a dude’s nickname. She is a TRYhard.

  10. Kita says:

I would guess the high, high heels are to not appear super short next to Alex for the premiere photos?

Is she giving anyone else “Pam from True Blood” vibes too? She especially reminds me so much of Pam in the photo with her leg and shoe showing. I miss Pam and Eric! I almost expect Margot to open her mouth and a Southern drawl laden with over-it snark to come out.

    • Lisa says:

Eric and Pam forever! I loved them too Kita. I wonder if Kristen was at this premiere. She showed up at his Battleship premiere if I recall. In fact, Alex is wearing the same suit. LOL

      • Kita says:

Haha, Lisa, I bet you are right about his suit! It would be great if Kristen was at this premiere; they are as lovely together as real-life friends as they were on screen. Now that was chemistry and a pair I wanted to watch do anything, even (especially) a staring contest. What I always wished for was a show based on Pam and Eric. Wouldn’t that be great? Alex was just saying he missed playing Eric Northman…. someone make that show happen, please!

      • Lisa says:

Since they were the best thing about True Blood, a show with just Eric and Pam would be amazing. I’d definitely watch it or anything else with Alex and Kristen in it for that matter. The chemistry was incredible!

      • Kita says:

Oh yeah. Wish we could pitch, write, and produce this show, Lisa. All the sumptuous flash-backs, and the possibilities for the future. Those are two fangers I would place all bets on for surviving anything. I have read the chemistry with Margot and Alex is really hot, and she impressed me in her movie “Z for Zachariah.” She was phenomenally good in it — and ironically, she has a Southern accent as that character. And has a love triangle with Chiwetel Ejifor and Chris Pine too. They all did a mighty fine job. Have you (or anyone else too) seen it?

      • KV says:

        Kristen was there!!

      • Hejhej says:

Kristen was there, I saw pics at tumblr 🙂 Great to see her again, she’s so lovely.

      • Lisa says:

Kita, I’ve never seen Margot in anything (not even the Wolf of Wall Street) but I may have to check out “Z for Zachariah”. Maybe after I see this movie. As for pitching a show with Eric and Pam, I wish.
So great that Kristen made it to the premiere. I’m sure Alex was pleased to see her especially since he’s moved to NYC now. Their friendship seems so genuine and sweet. Now I’ll have to go and find those pictures…..thanks guys.

      • Kita says:

Yay! So glad to hear that KV and hejhej! 😀

Lisa, I think you will be pleasantly surprised with Margot in the Z movie. And what a triangle to be a part of!

      • lucy2 says:

That’s great that Kristen was there! They seemed like such good friends from the show.
I’ve only seen Margot in that dreadful Will Smith con man movie, but she was really good. I think she has that it factor.

  11. LadyJane says:

The Gucci dress is fabulous. No everyone has to wear boring-body-con with cut outs. This is different and she pulls it off and looks tres chic. Good for Margot for taking (an albeit slight) fashion risk, it pays off. God I am so bored of most red carpet looks. The shoes are stripper-fug though.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t think it’s a great summer dress, but I do agree with you that it’s refreshing to see someone wearing something different than flesh colored mesh and cutouts “strategically” placed. Yawn.

      • benchwarmer says:

Well put. So tired of the cut-out dresses too. And I love the Gucci ads I see in the magazines, it’s fun to see one come to life.

    • Flowerchild says:

I disagree it didn’t pay off at all and this silhouette is nothing new or special. What’s the “fashion risk” the tacky pink fur on the sleeves or that it to short for her arms.

Not evey celebrity is dress in tacky body-con and cut outs dress on the red carpet.

  12. JudyK says:

    A Kimono, Fur, and Hooves…now, there’s a statement.

  13. Talie says:

I followed the whole thread on Jezebel about how she’s actually in her 30s…she really fudged her age, even worse than Rebel Wilson!

    • Lisa says:

Yeah, it’s strange how she looks so much older than her stated age.

    • Bob says:

That thread resulted in someone she went to high school with sending in yearbook proof to Bobby Finger that she is NOT lying about her age.

      http://jezebel.com/after-all-that-margot-robbie-is-definitely-25-1776847566

      • lucy2 says:

I believe that’s her age. I think she looks a little older just due to the nature of her features, and she has a lot of confidence, so she comes across as more mature.

Plus Hollywood keeps pairing her with older guys.

    • Sarah says:

Haha is this still going on? She’s 25 and will be 26 soon. End of.
I am 26 and was in the same year as her at school. Some of my friends have perpetual baby faces but they look YOUNG. The rest of us look Margot’s age, myself included. We don’t look “old”. What should a 25 year old look like exactly?

  14. LannisterForever says:

I’m not a fan of the dress but I like her (and the rest of the cast!) so I will definitely see this movie 🙂

  15. Bex says:

Well, it’s different, I’ll give her that. I don’t think Tarzan is projected to do particularly well, but you never know.

  16. Hejhej says:

She’s very pretty and has such bad style! The dress is terrible. The pink fur is especially bizarre and the shoes are just so cheap looking.
I don’t get her hair either. Surely she could have gotten a much better do done by a stylist than this..

To me Alex looks a bit tense but I guess that’s a natural when he’s opening a big movie, almost all on his own. I also think it’s going to bomb but that probably means it won’t.

  17. Neelyo says:

Robbie seems to favor dresses that cover her up.

  18. Size Does Matter says:

Someone here described him as looking like a shrimp and now I can’t unsee it.

  19. Tig says:

I love the fabric- but the length and sleeves are wrong for a summer event. Those cuffs remind me of the furry dice you can see hanging from rear view mirrors!😏. This movie isn’t my cup of tea, but want to support Viking King, so will prob ante up.

  20. SJO says:

I can take or leave the sleeves, I just think it needs to be hemmed. And yes not worn at the end of June in the desert.

  21. Lucy says:

I actually like this dress in all its weirdness, furry pink cuffs and all. She makes it look good, and also seems to like it.

  22. EM says:

She, like most, is paid to wear these.

  23. Jena says:

It’s been getting quite good reviews from screenings, so yeah, your gut is wrong. Like that time you said Alex would get engaged to Alexa Chung for publicity.

    • Jenjen says:

I totally agree! Im pretty sure he would get more publicity getting engaged to a bag of broken glass anyway

  24. Karla says:

Margot looks great no matter what she wears so whether she has style is really neither here nor there. You just can’t make her ugly!

  25. Nikki says:

Looks like a bulky robe: awful. New stylist ASAP.

  26. Mei says:

Those cuffs are ghastly, who at Gucci decided to ruin the whole idea of a qípáo/cheongsam/mandarin dress with those? The embroidery is alright, nothing special compared to others I’ve seen but the contrast stitching is a nice touch. It seriously needed hemming though so she didn’t have to wear those awful shoes.

She’d look worlds better if she had put her hair up to show off the collar and the embroidery.

  27. Joanie says:

    Girl, no.

  28. OriginallyBlue says:

    Djimon! ❤

  29. sassy says:

No christoph love?? Good! Then he’s all mine!!!!

  30. Bread and Circuses says:

She wore the giant stripper heels because she was going to be standing beside a giant Viking.

It may even be studio mandated; you don’t want an actor to look like a munchkin on the red carpet. It’s the same reason why Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Harding always wear lifts on the red carpet — all you need is to get them close enough in height to their costars that no one really notices the difference, because if they DO notice the difference, that’s ALL the press is going to talk about.

  31. deevia says:

That is Áo Dài (Vietnamese), not Mandarin dress (Chinese). See links http://www.theworldofchinese.com/2014/08/differences-between-vietnamese-and-chinese-traditional-clothing/

The high slit is because you are supposed to wear pants! Gucci just bastardized the style.

    • Hejhej says:

      Thanks for that link.

I am not loving the way Gucci is turning out and this makes me like them even less.

  32. lisa2 says:

I haven’t read all the comments.. but does anyone other than me think that Alex Skarsgard would make an EXCELLENT BOND.. I see it.. does anyone else..

I don’t know much about him.. but I could see him as Bond. JUST SAYING IT AGAIN

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

Yes, I would. I think he would make a great anything…King, Prince, Knight, Viking…the list goes on and on. I LOVE him.

  33. Cc says:

    Wut… is… that

  34. Sean says:

A bit silly for an absurdly beautiful woman to cover up so much when she is trying to sell a movie that no one wants.
