Julie Klausner: Gwyneth Paltrow is a ‘backstabber,’ ‘there’s many a tale to tell’

If you’re anything like me, you heard the name “Julie Klausner” and thought, “Wait, I remember something weird about her?” The only reason I know her name is because Klausner started an absolutely insane Twitter beef with Zendaya earlier this year. Zendaya was doing her thing at the Kids Choice Awards and Klausner, who is nearly 20 years older than Zendaya, tweeted out a series of insults about Zendaya’s body – go here to review. So, we’re talking about Julie Klausner again. She’s the creator of the Hulu show Difficult People, which is produced by Amy Schumer Poehler. The premise of the show is that Klausner and Billy Eisner play two jaded, cynical comedians in New York. So when Klausner was chatting with Page Six, she was asked about her history as a “showbiz insider,” and if she’s heard any juicy gossip.

“Difficult People” creator and showbiz insider Julie Klausner says Hollywood stars only pretend to be pals — and Gwyneth Paltrow is among the phoniest “backstabbers” in Tinseltown.

“They pretend that they are [all great friends], but the stuff that is said about people behind the scenes is really terrible,” she told us at a second season premiere of her Hulu show. “Well — Gwyneth Paltrow — there’s many a tale to tell. All kinds of backstabbing.”

While comedian and writer Klausner was mum on the specific details, she figured of Paltrow, “she’s into [Eastern therapy] cupping now — maybe she’s cupping instead of backstabbing.”

Klausner is starting to sound like her character on “Difficult People,” in which she stars with Billy Eichner as two struggling New York comedians who hate everyone. Paltrow, whose showbiz pals include Jessica Seinfeld, Mario Batali and Jay Z, was once superclose with Madonna, but the duo fell out over the Material Girl’s ex-trainer Tracy Anderson, who is now sculpting Paltrow’s derriere, as well as those of many Hamptons and Manhattan moms.

Klausner has taken a shot at Paltrow before; in March, she tweeted, “Click here to witness the chemistry between Gwyneth Paltrow and Jimmy Fallon AKA the comedy version of ammonia and bleach!”

[From Page Six]

I’ve always wondered about the Gwyneth Paltrow-Madonna falling out. I always assumed it was about Tracy Anderson, but I suspect there are more layers to it too. Even though Gwyneth wants to brand herself as The Ultimate Girl’s Girl, I suspect she’s not. I suspect Gwyneth is exactly who we think she is: the kind of smug, name-dropping, humble-bragging elitist who will talk sh-t about you behind your back. Now, all that being said, Klausner seems like the kind of person who tries to bad-mouth bigger celebrities in an attempt to raise her own profile.

I think Difficult People is produced by Amy Poehler, not Schumer.

  2. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

    …what is with this woman?

Helpful tip for you crazy lady, in your attempts to gain fame and success through your own efforts maybe stop using other people’s names to garner all the attention.

But thanks for not making this particular comment about insulting or implying sexual misconduct on a black child.

    • jinni says:

She is def one of those people that namedrop just so someone can pay attention to her. Also, I hate people like her that say they have tea but don’t want to give up the details. Like if you don’t want to spill then don’t even bring the fact that you have tea up. Keep it to yourself.

She probably doesn’t know anymore than the average gossip follower, but wants to front like she’s in the know or hangs out with a similar group to those people that hang with Paltrow so people can think she is on Paltrow’s social hierarchy level. Trick please.

  3. Size Does Matter says:

I only clicked hoping for the glorious pink fleshsuit of hideousness photos. Shame! *rings bell*

  4. Gg says:

So glad the picture you had of her is in that FUG suit hahaha. Gwyneth is the ultimate love to hate her popular girl. Always has been always will be.

  5. Lorn says:

Wasn’t there something about Gwyneth backstabbing Wynona Ryder? She stole a script from her?

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

Yes, it was “Shakespeare in Love,” and whether this woman is a credible source or not, I would believe this about Paltrow. She is known to be awful.

  6. Neelyo says:

There is also the story that Paltrow stole SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE from her good friend at the time, Winona Ryder.

Can’t remember the details but I recall reading that in MOVIELINE in the 90s. God I loved that magazine.

    • Bridget says:

That’s a famous legend, but then again Gwyneth was very much Harvey’s golden girl at the time so I have a hard time believing that she wouldn’t have seen that script anyway.

      • Cricket says:

I think this was during the time Goop and Winona were besties cause Goop was with Affleck and Winona was with Damon.

      • Bridget says:

Yes, they were besties, but my point was that at that time GP was Miramax’s girl. She wouldn’t have needed to steal the script or the part.

    • tcbc says:

Also one actor cannot steal a part from another. The director changed his mind, that’s all.

      • Natalie says:

And even if Gwenyth did push to get a role Winona had, thank goodness she did. Gwenyth is at least a competent actor while Winona had already negatively affected The Age of Innocence because she couldn’t alter her very modern sounding voice.

      • LAK says:

Natalie, that’s not true about THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. You may not like Winona in the role, but not only was she praised for it, she was Oscar nominated for best supporting actress though she didn’t win.

She was also nominated in the same category for the BAFTA and Golden Globes for same role in that year. Won the Golden Globe.

      • Natalie says:

Oh, it’s just my opinion, which is very much anti-Winona for that role.

I also disliked Natalie Portman in Closer and I could not understand how she kept getting nominated for awards. Black Swan on the other hand, I understood. I like Winona in plenty of other roles, just not this one. The Age of Innocence is one of my favorite books and Daniel Day Lewis as Newland Archer was so great , and then Winona would show up looking beautiful, but ugh that voice.

      • annaloo. says:

Does it matter if it was Gwyneth or Winona, when CATE should have gotten the OSCAR for ELIZABETH that year anyway?

That is the bigger issue!! *waving fist in umbrage*

      • Natalie says:

        Very true.

Cate owned that role. Man, Christopher Eccleston as the Duke of Norfolk? Hot. “I am Norfolk!” “You were Norfolk. Dead men have no titles.”

      • Bridget says:

I loved Winona in The Age Of Innocense!

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

        annaloo.,

I agree Cate Blanchett was totally snubbed for “Elizabeth.” Weinstein payed for Gwynnie’s Oscar. I actually think her “best” acting performance was in “Sliding Doors.”

  7. Mia V. says:

At the time of the Madonna-Gwyneth break-up, it was said that Gwyneth believed Madonna was flirting with Chris Martin, which to me is bullshit. I also don’t think it was related to Tracy Anderson, although after the break-up Gwyneth kept Tracy and Stella McCartney, so it gives the idea they expelled Madonna from the group in a “you cant’s sit with us”.

    • JenniferJustice says:

You have it backwards. Madonna found texts from Goop to Madonna’s husband at the time, Guy Richy. Madonna full on cut her out of her life right then and there. They have never spoken since. And frankly, I can totally see Goop trying to compete with her own besties because Goop really does want to think she’s some kind of sexual goddess.

    • Sam says:

Madonna and Stella are still really close…her daughter Lola stars in the new POP fragrance ad for Stella.

This is just my theory, but I always thought the break-up between madge and Goop was a combo of Goop leeching on to Beyonce as she became a bigger pop star than madge and remaining friends with Madonna’s ex as they were divorcing.

Goop is notorious for leeching on to people at the height of their fame and discarding them once she finds more famous friends.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

You have two major narcissist’s trying to be friends, there was no way that was going to end well.

    • Artemis says:

Madonna wants everything to herself and she wants people to follow her rules. When Gwyneth had Tracy, Madonna tried Tracy’s method and after liking it, demanded to be her n°1 client. Madonna and Gwyneth worked out together too but Madonna calls dibs on everything she likes and that’s not the way a friendship should go. Sandra Bernard can tell you all about Madonna’s selfish ways and Christopher pretty much said everybody does what Madonna says or otherwise you’re out of her circle. All her dancers ‘converted’ to Kaballah. One of her best friends, Ingrid Casares, once fed Madonna (in public, it’s captured on camera!) and also follows Kaballah. Ingrid used to be Sandra’s girlfriend and she dumped Sandra for Madonna. Sandra was never a woman Madonna could control but Ingrid is/was Madonna’s lapdog (confirmed by Sandra and Christopher). Madonna does NOT like people who work against her or who have a different opinion than hers.

An older gossip blogger, a woman, said that Madonna is very complex and that you never really get to come close to her. Once you think you’re close to her and you understand her, she will dump you in the blink of an eye. Or ignore you until you get the message. I think Gwyneth dumped Madonna as none of Gwyneth’s friends (e.g. Stella McCartney) are as tight as they used to be. Stella was up on stage during her recent tour and she didn’t seem that engaged in what Madonna did. Although Lourdes in her new campaign, I think their relationship is more business than fun. Madonna’s lack of high profile girlfriends is very obvious in comparison to pre-2008 Madonna. Something happened and I think Gwyneth is at the centre of it. Which good for her, Madonna is not a woman to be friends by all accounts. You can’t treat people like pawns and Madonna got checked mate 🙂

      • Rhiley says:

As much as I despise Rosie O’donell, I think this is exactly what Madonna did to her- and Sandra Bernhard (I love Sandy just to clarify).

  8. Bridget says:

I’ve wondered if the issue with Paltrow isn’t back stabbing per se – I have a feeling that technically everything she does is above board – so much as she’s not the person that sticks with you when things are down. The folks that she’s infamously no longer friends with (Madonna, Winona) went through some tough personal stuff.

    • Sam says:

Exactly that…Goop doesn’t associate with people who aren’t on top. Jay-z and Chris Martin became friends as Beyonce’s star was rising and she leeched on to her as her own star dimmed. If you Google Bey & Jay’s daughter Blue, Goop has given more personal details about her life then her parents.

It’s really sad actually…she has to bump up her self worth based off of the powerful people who she can leech off of and brag about. I m sure she has normal friends but you wouldn’t know it based on her interviews

    • Livvers says:

Agree. Backstabbing is way too bourgeois.

  9. AC18 says:

I remember a story where Gwyneth was friends with Winona Ryder and stole her script that was on her coffee table of Shakespeare in Love or something like that.

  10. lucy2 says:

Julie is annoying with her “slam famous people to get attention” method, but at the same time, I have no trouble believing that about Gwenyth. She seems more concerned with the image of her friendships than the actual relationships themselves.

  11. pikawho? says:

The fact that Amy Poehler is friends with and produces a show for this woman really lowers her value in my eyes. Klausner is a horrible human being.

Combine that with all the shit Tina Fey did on Kimmy Schmidt last season, making fun of minorities who rightly get offended when shows have racist story lines…ugh. So disappointing.

And Gywneth has always seemed shady, this is not news.

    • Rhiley says:

Tina Fey is disappointing to me of late. I am not sure what she is doing with career, but I don’t like it. I wish that Netflix would pick up 30 Rock to do some new episodes. That show is brilliant and Tina Fey at her best.

      • Starkiller says:

Tina Fey ain’t sh*t. Glad other people are starting to get wise to the fact.

    • stinky says:

      ohnoyoudi’ntcomeforKimmySchmidt.

  12. Artemis says:

Yes they always have tales to tell and then end up saying nada. Just shut up in the first place then.

It’s like that annoying boring friend that tries to gossip ‘oh my god, you never guess what I heard about Bethany’ to then cockblock you ‘but I can’t spill, I promised not to spill!’. In the end you just realise they don’t have any tea because nobody trusts them and they never get into anybody’s inner circle…they’re just trying to make themselves seem more important than they are.

  13. CornyBlue says:

Anyone who wants to brand themselves as the Ultimate Girl’s Girl rubs me the wrong way. Like why do you want to be praised for having female friendships and supporting your fellow women ?

  14. HK9 says:

Since stepping on just about anyone to get attention seems to be her shtick, she just gets the side eye from me. I’d actually rather hear what Goop has to say about her.

    • JenniferJustice says:

I’d rather here this woman dish on Schumer, but that’s not gonna’ happen cause she can’t bite the hand that feeds her. They have the same catty attitude toward other women…rooted in jealousy I’m sure.

  15. Sea Dragon says:

Makes sense why she’s friends with the sly, sarcastic, volatile Chelsea Handler.

  16. Nicole says:

I think Difficult People is funny, got to stir up ratings I suppose. Not the best way, but who does it the ‘right’ way?

    • Lorn says:

      Difficult People is SO funny.

      • LAK says:

Julie Klausner is so funny. I blame he for my Real Housewives addiction because she used to recap RHOBH, NY and NJ on Vulture.com.

He books and show are equally funny.

She doesn’t pull any punches, but in a world where people are suddenly offended when gossip is given a name vs pretending they don’t gossip because it is a blind/speculative item from ‘sources’ Julie Klausner/Sara Hammell/etc will offend.

      • Nicole says:

Do people understand what comedy is anymore?

      • Nicole says:

I also think her comments about Zendaya were spot on

  17. cakecakecake says:

funny, Goop is disgusting and a backstabber BUT she knows that Goop is cupping though or is that her attempt at a lame joke??

lord, knows I cannot stomach Goop but this chick needs to sit down.
