Matt Damon: Brad Pitt ‘doesn’t get the credit as an actor that I think he deserves’

matty1

I went into this Matt Damon-GQ cover story partially annoyed and partially pleased. I was pleased because CB so rarely allows me to cover her Forever Bae, even though I totally love/adore him too. I was partially annoyed because GQ wrote the piece in a weird style, like just randomly assorted quotes from Matty D and his friends and coworkers (and all of his coworkers are friends). But once I sat down and read the whole thing – go here to read it – I was charmed. It’s not the most in-depth piece, but it’s light and funny and there are some really cool stories in there. Here are some highlights:

How Matty got the part on The Departed: “I was sitting at George Clooney’s pool in Lake Como, and Brad Pitt walked in, sat down next to me, and said, ‘Do you want to do a Martin Scorsese movie in Boston?” [Brad] was a producer on The Departed, and he felt like he had gotten too old for those roles. It’s one of the most absurd things that’s ever happened in my life. [Marty] said to me early on [in production], “I don’t know Boston. This is your town.” So I would show up with stuff that I’d write and give it to Bill [Monahan, the screenwriter]. and say, “Do you like any of this?” The first time I rehearsed with Jack Nicholson, he went over to get some coffee, and he turned around [and said], “You know, I never would have made it this long if I wasn’t a great f–king writer.”

Career goal: “I always thought the goal was William Holden. To just be in a lot of good movies.”

He’s glad he’s not too good-looking: “I don’t look like Marlon Brando. I remember Ben and I having a realization early on. Like, we were watching Brad [Pitt] in a movie, and one of us turned to the other and said, “I haven’t heard a thing that guy said in five minutes. I’m just looking at him.” And we realized there’s a good and a bad [that comes with that]. It’ll mask one of your lesser performances, but it also detracts from your best performances. Because Brad has been legitimately brilliant in some of the things he’s done, and he doesn’t get the credit as an actor that I think he deserves. I never had to carry that water.

On Heath Ledger: “He was too bright for this world. Coming off [The Brothers Grimm, I was] telling everybody that I just worked with the best actor I’ve ever seen. And people were like, ‘What are you talking about? The guy from A Knight’s Tale?’ And I was like, ‘You just wait. And wait until you see what kind of a director he’s gonna be.’ There were things that he did where I couldn’t have got there in three lifetimes. And there were ways in which he was like a puppy dog. You wanted to protect him. [His death was] just f–king pointless.”

30 Rock was his favorite show:
“ucy and I started watching on the first episode and were like, “This is our favorite thing.” I literally went up to [Tina Fey] at the SAG Awards and said, “Look, your show is so great, and if you ever have anything on it, I would love to do a guest spot.”

I love the William Holden name-check. People often compare Damon to Tom Hanks, something in the Jimmy Stewart-everyman-archetype. Handsome but not too handsome, a talented actor but he makes it look natural. But William Holden wasn’t an everyman – he was a handsome, charming actor who could do anything, from war movies to romantic comedies to epic dramas. Kind of like Matty D!

There are some great stories about the ups and downs of Matt’s career, and what’s nice is that at no point does it feel like Matt is throwing people under the bus for his own weird or bad career choices. He is still lamenting the fact that Billy Bob Thornton didn’t get to show his four-hour director’s cut of All the Pretty Horses. Like, that still KILLS Matt Damon. He also admits to being unsure of himself when he first walked onto the set of Ocean’s Eleven, etc. When Matty met Prince, Matt asked Prince “So you live in Minnesota? I hear you live in Minnesota.” And Prince said (according to Matt): “I live inside my own heart, Matt Damon.”

Matty looks nice in the cover photo. I agree with what he said about Brad Pitt… Burn After Reading is one of my all-time favorite movies and Brad is a comedic genius in it. I think he’s more talented than many give him credit for.

    • David says:

I agree. He was so great in Twelve Monkeys.

      • Tulip Garden says:

My favorite Brad films are 12 Monkeys and ….Jesse James….whatever the whole title was. I will watch 12 Monkeys whenever I catch it on, as much for Willis as Pitt. I just liked the look/feel/acting in that film.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

12 Monkeys was the film that made me realize Pitt isn’t just pretty. He was really, really good in that.

    • Brandy says:

I agree with you completely about Brad Pitt. My sister and I have this argument on a regular basis; she thinks he’s an overrated pretty face. I completely disagree. I think his comedic turns are brilliant – “Burn After Reading” and “12 Monkeys” are great examples of his range, and frankly, he broke my heart in “By the Sea.” I think that movie really suffered from their star power, and folks didn’t give it a chance on its own merits. He was very good in that, too.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Actually I wasn’t sure it was him! They airbrushed away some of his cragginess, like the lines between his eyes. I LIKE his cragginess.

    • KB says:

      I LOVE Burn After Reading!!

    • doofus says:

I think he’s got good comedic timing, too.

when he was on Friends (I know, I know…), I thought he was really funny but some folks say that “his timing was off” and “he’s terrible in comedies”…I just don’t agree.

    • sunnydaze says:

Totally agree – I can’t be the only person who saw Snatch and thought “Holy Sh!t, he’s effing amazing….” Sure, that body, but that accent alone was incredible…

    • CS(g)E says:

      You think that’s a schwinn!

  2. Harryg says:

    I agree, Pitt is great.

  3. Carol says:

Well, I guess we might be seeing Matt in “When Time Ran Out… 2.”

  4. Jayna says:

Matt is so chatty in his interviews, and what I like is he tells stories from throughout his career that isn’t all about him. He is a name dropper in interviews, but I always find it usually in a good way, like he brings you into the world behind the movies and the community of actors and interactions and friendships or just in awe of some he’s met. I was moved by what he said about Heath.

  5. Brea says:

It’s a really nice interview. Maybe I’m wrong, but I remember Susan Sarandon saying a very similar thing: that Brad is a very good character actor but people often overlook his talent because he’s ridiculously good-looking and I kind of agree.

  6. NeNe'sWig says:

    That Prince quote is perfection.

    Like gum.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I’m in love with your comment both because Prince and gum 🙂

    • doofus says:

loved the Prince quote…and not only because he called him by his full name, just like Charlie Murphy related in his story about Prince. (Dave Chappelle as Prince called him by his full name…I guess that was a thing he did. RIP.)

    • KiddVicious says:

LOL! I made my own Friends reference in another post.

    • Tara says:

      <3

    • Rayya Kirt says:

There was no other way to play off living in Minnesota

  7. Who ARE these people? says:

I agree. It was hard for me to see Pitt’s talent until he grew out of the pretty-boy phase.

  8. Anon33 says:

I’ve always thought Brad was gifted comedically…dramatically is another matter altogether.
Is that Matt’s actual hair? Why is it giving me the tingles, dammit?!!!

    • tifzlan says:

Brad was SO funny in Burn After Reading.

      • tracking says:

I agree, and Fight Club, with its dark humor. I’ve never been sold on him in dramatic roles either, but he was impressive in these two.

  9. Catelina says:

He’s talked about Brad in so many interviews that it really shouldn’t surprise me anymore when he continues to do it, lol. What he said about him is nice though, the whole profile is a nice read.

  10. Jus says:

Well I am most likely alone in the boat but I think Brad Pitt is a very one-note actor. I’ve never seen anything to suggest that he can portray a character that isn’t basically himself.

    • Jayna says:

I think overall he is a dependable, capable actor who serves a movie well, but not considered a great actor for the most part, but he has turned in a handful of what I think are great performances over the years that show his range.

    • perplexed says:

I was bored to tears by him in Moneyball.

I think his body is better looking than his face. When people go on about his face, I don’t get it. Though I do think he comes across as a nice enough person and that probably helps his looks.

      • Tiffany says:

I thought Moneyball was some of his best work. It really touch on both elements, comedy and drama and he nailed them both. I really enjoyed that film.

  11. Squiggisbig says:

Totally agree about Brad. Maybe he could pull a Leo and gross beard/dad-bod it up?

  12. Bex says:

I really liked this piece! You got a sense of the world they all inhabit beyond the usual soundbites- I hadn’t heard most of these stories before. I’ve never had much of an opinion on Matt Damon as an actor, but he seems like a very decent person.

  13. lucy2 says:

Too funny, I’m re-watching 30 Rock and just finished the Matt Damon story arc.
I’m not a huge Brad fan – I’ve liked him in some roles, disliked him in others. He’s OK. I don’t avoid his work, but he’s not an incentive for me to see a movie. So that may be influencing my feelings here, but I feel like Brad gets plenty of credit. He works as much as he wants to, has his choice of roles, is considered A list, and has had a bunch of award nominations. It’s not like the guy has been toiling away in the shadows for years, or stuck on some CBS procedural.
I do think he’s a very good producer though, his resume there is excellent.

  14. Elle says:

It still burns me that most people don’t know The Departed was an almost scene-for-scene remake of Infernal Affairs. Asian cinema is so underrated.

As for Brad Pitt, there are far better actors than Pitt who get even less credit for much better work. Hello to everyone in The Wire except Idris.

    Prince’s comment is amazing.

  15. I Choose Me says:

Brad doesn’t get enough credit for his comedic chops. I do think he’s underrated.

Burn After Reading, Fight Club, Twelve Monkeys, The Assassination of Jesse James, Snatch. All terrific roles by Brad.

    • Angelica says:

All of this. He’s freaking adorable in Snatch. I also liked Killing Them Softly even though he wasn’t really a standout to me, but he just looked so cool in it! I think he’s getting better as he ages too, I used to take or leave a Brad Pitt film, but now I look forward to watching any of his work.

  16. ellie says:

Not only is Brad Pitt a great actor, actually a great character actor in the body of a lead actor but also a solid producer. His production company Plan B is one of the few companies in Hollywood, genuinely attempting to employ people of color and minority in films, behind and in front of the camera.

    • Tara says:

@Ellie: “great character actor in the body of a lead actor” is 1) an excellent way to describe Brad Pitt 2) why I really like him 3) how I think he sees himself… and what he most enjoys.

    • Tiffany says:

I remember Susan Sarandon and Genna Davis saying that about him years ago in a Thelma and Louise anniversary interview.

  17. Soulsister says:

I agree with what Matt Damon had to say about Brad. I thought he was sublime in Snatch, Tree of Life and Killing Them Softly.

  18. TreadStyle says:

I really love him and think he has a great sense of humor!

  19. Rayya Kirt says:

I think I wanna come back as Matt Damon next life. It’s like he saved orphans for centuries to glow like this.

  20. Mei says:

Watched The Big Short recently, I genuinely didn’t even realise one of the more interesting characters was Brad until about halfway through, he had a wig, extra facial hair, a baseball cap a glasses on! One of my current favourites of his is World War Z though, he fit that role well.
