Thanks to Mr. Marshall for the fun memories, particularly the TV shows that were a part of my childhood (before cable and 9000 choices became the norm).

  2. Luca76 says:

RIP I totally watched way too much tv as a kid. Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days and even Odd Couple reruns all were a big part of my childhood.

    • Jegede says:

Here in the UK, Happy Days was a staple on Channel 4.

      Aaaah memories.

    • tracking says:

Such classic, and creative, shows. Can you imagine entertainment history without Robin Williams and Henry Winkler? RIP, Mr. Marshall.

  3. sassy says:

Have fun with Mork, Mr. Marshall

  4. Kiki says:

This sucks. First it is Nora Ephron, now Garry Marshall. Romantic comedy will never be the same without them. Ugh this sucks

  5. Coconut says:

I read Penny Marshall’s memoir “My Mother Was Nuts” recently. Garry gave her her first break in tv (secretary role in “The Odd Couple”) and they were close through the years. Her book is a great read through Hollywood history and full of colorful famous characters and backstories.

    • LAK says:

I adored Penny Marshall until i met her.

Sometimes, it’s best to never meet famous people you admire.

      • doofus says:

what didn’t you like about her? I ask because I met her too, and she was really nice. (genuinely asking, not trying to start anything…)

      • Christin says:

I’m truly interested in what both of you experienced, because I’ve guessed her personality as a bit moody (which is just based on the L&S years, when Cindy left the show amid rumors of discord).

      • doofus says:

I met her in a kinda social situation (even though I was acting as “the help” – nanny for my sister). she was very kind and cooed over my niece. she seemed really laid back.

      • LAK says:

I met her in a work situation even though i wasn’t working for her.

In the intervening years, i’ve gained more life experience to evaluate that encounter, and i still think my impression holds.

There are simply no extenuating circumstances that can explain her behaviour and personality as i experienced them that day.

    • Jegede says:

OK I’m gonna pick up that book.

    • Carol says:

Ok, now I’m going to have to read her book.

    • holly hobby says:

I’ve read both Garry’s and Penny’s memoirs (I grew up watching the Marshalls’ shows so yeah I was genuinely curious!). Both know how to tell a great story. If you’ve read Penny’s you have to read Garry’s. They come across as salt of the earth people. I was genuinely sad when Garry passed away. I hope he didn’t live to see Chachi’s address at the RNC! Now that is one guy that ruined my childhood impression. Watching Tameron Hall take Chachi down on live tv was glorious.

Richard Roeper wrote an article a while ago where he talked a little about Garry Marshall’s filmmaking and pointed out that Marshall loved casting unknown actors that he knew and liked in his movies and was responsible for a lot of people “breaking into” the industry. He also liked casting his family members, who are in almost everything he did. It speaks a lot that most of the praise he’s getting now does not speak to his technical achievements or career, but what a genuinely nice guy he was, working and otherwise. Godspeed, Ms. Marshall.

    • holly hobby says:

One of the celebs posted that Garry’s mantra was “It is nice to be important. It is important to be nice.” Those are great words to live by. RIP Mr. Marshall.

He gave Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway their first big break. Speaking of which there have been no statement from Julia. Richard Gere already put out a statement. They were all very close. What happened?

  7. Jane says:

My thoughts are with his family at this time. He did wonderful projects which will go down in history as being some of the greatest television (and movies) we’ve seen in a long time.

  8. Rose says:

I’m here for Third Eye Blind! The cojones. Kudos.

  9. JRenee says:

    Journey well sir!

  10. Emma - The JP Lover says:

Thanks for some incredible memories, Gary … and for introducing Chris Pine to the world in his first feature length movie, “Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement” (2004). You made me smile for 4 decades. Rest in Peace.

  11. Miss M says:

Rest in Peace, Mr. Marshall! Thank you for your movies!
