Melania Trump’s speechwriter falls on her sword for plagiarized RNC speech

wenn28263866

Early Tuesday morning, some Trump campaign staffer had a full-fledged meltdown on MSNBC and threw a hissy fit about how Melania Trump’s plagiarized RNC speech was barely a one-day story. Not so much. Like so many scandals these days, the scandal absolutely could have been minimized into a one-day story if someone had simply stepped up in the first hours and said, “You know what, this was a bad move. We apologize, our bad.” It became a week-long story because the Trump campaign and other Republicans (Trump surrogates, mostly) couldn’t get their f—king stories straight. No one could come up with a plausible lie or, failing that, no one could properly sort out the blame for the plagiarism. I hope people are watching, because THIS is how Trump handles a minor crisis. Imagine how he would handle an actual crisis.

Anyway, we now know who was responsible for the plagiarized text in Melania’s RNC speech. The first reports came out in the NYT on Wednesday morning, and by Wednesday afternoon, the story was confirmed: THE BALLERINA DID IT. I’m not joking. At first, Melania’s RNC speech was written by two long-time Republican speechwriters, Matthew Scully and John McConnell. It seems that Melania didn’t like the speech they wrote, so she approached one of her husband’s ghostwriters, a former ballerina-turned-ghostwriter named Meredith McIver. McIver largely discarded the first draft and she worked with Melania to make a more tailored speech. McIver came forward with a personal written statement distributed by the Trump campaign:

My name is Meredith McIver and I’m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family.

In working with Melania on her recent first lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. This was my mistake and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.”

Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family but they rejected it. Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and we learn and grow from these experiences.”

I asked to put out the statement because I did not like seeing the way this was distracting from Mr. Trump’s historic campaign for president and Melania’s beautiful message and presentation. I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused. Today, more than ever, I am honored to work for such a great family.”

[Via The NYT]

Once again, it sort of feels like the campaign is throwing Melania under the bus. The Trump Org. just distributed a statement saying that Melania was the one studying Michelle Obama’s speeches and telling her speechwriter which passages she wanted to copy! I can see how this is an honest mistake between Melania and Meredith, but there’s a larger problem: that no one in Trump’s campaign looked at Melania’s speech before she gave it, and no one thought to double-check it. Disorganized. Chaotic. Shambolic. Unprofessional. These are just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about this Republic National Convention.

This speechwriter has drunk the Kool-Aid, alright.

    • doofus says:

and her “confession” still doesn’t explain the Rick Roll!

I’m sorry, as I said yesterday, I am NOT buying this woman’s confession. they needed to find a low level staffer to take the blame on the plagiarism but didn’t address who stuck in that Rick Roll. again, that HAD to have been deliberate, which makes me think it was sabotage from an internal source, which the Drumpf campaign CANNOT admit to. it’d be yet another sign that they have no coordination/control over the campaign.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Quite possible. They booked Third Eye Blind and the band trolled them from the stage. Sabotage from within is very likely

      • doofus says:

lilac, the Third Eye Blind stuff is EPIC. they are awesome. “raise your hand if you believe in science!” DYING.

      • Betsy says:

Either that or Melania is very bright and has been looking for a suitable way to get her revenge on the D.

That’s my new theory. Melania is actively trolling her husband. 🙂

      • Tesch100 says:

Do you really think that the speech writer wrote her own confession? I wonder who she borrowed it from.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Did you see her intentional and telling smirk after the RickRoll?

I do not for one second believe that a professional writer who knew FLOTUS speech was being referenced and studied would not have cast a sharp eye for plagiarism. Melania wanted all of it included , and in true Rump sociopathic fashion, got what she wanted.

It seems insane to me that they would think they could get away with it. Of course there would be eagle-eyed people scrutinizing her words and performance the moment she walked onto that stage.

      • Erica_V says:

I’ve had intense conversations about how I believe that for months Trump has been trying to subtlety self sabotage his campaign. I can’t remember what happened first to make me think it but I feel he really amped it up by referring to 9/11 as 7/11 in NYC. That felt too deliberate to be a mistake.

      • ohdear says:

I agree @Doofus. There is a report out that Trump offered Kasich ‘the chance to be the most powerful VP ever”. I don’t think he wants the job. I think he started this whole thing as a money making scheme, then got caught up in the ego. And now he can’t get out, no matter what tomfoolery comes out.

      • Janetdr says:

The rick roll seems really significant to me too. It seems more likely to have been Trump (or Mrs) rather than sabotage by another person. I always thought he was running as a joke and it got out of hand. Doesn’t appear that anything he says bothers his base…..

    • Bread and Circuses says:

Has anyone reputable established that this woman exists?

I’m not giving the Trump campaign any benefit of the doubt when it comes to honesty.

      • gwen says:

I’ve been wondering the same thing myself, smelling a coverup which wouldn’t be new to this campaign.

      • Christin says:

It seems convenient that they get all this publicity, then he looks like the forgiving, good guy by rejecting the unknown(?) person’s resignation offer.

    • Adella says:

@Erica_V , your comment about Trump trying to sabotage his campaign makes me think of the idea/conspiracy going around that the Clintons encouraged him to run. Both Bill and Hillary are very smart. Trump is not. But if he listened to them and even if he isn’t aware that he is being used (which I believe since he just doesn’t have the political mind/expertise to go up against the Clintons) he might have agreed because he either he thought, what the heck, it will raise his brand/profile, or he thinks he’s smarter than them and can actually win.

      • Zombie Shortcake says:

Re. conspiracies: I too have wondered if he is in this as some intentional red-herring candidate; there is just so little about his behaviour and entire campaign that makes sense.

  2. Patricia says:

Other words that come to mind when talking about the RNC:
Bigoted, angry, dangerous, racist, entitled, uneducated, small-minded…

    • Neelyo says:

Seriously. That twit from The Real World was speaking with her congressman husband (also Real World) and when she said her parents were born in Mexico, she was booed. She supports their insane platform and they still booed her. That tool Peter Thiel is speaking tonight as a ‘proud gay man’, he’ll probably be pelted with tomatoes.

      • lucy2 says:

That’s awful. How can you be a part of a group that would react that way to your parents’ heritage?

      • doofus says:

lucy2, I said something similar yesterday regarding the Log Cabin Republicans.

why would you want to be part of a group that has such hatred for your demographic? especially this year, after the GOP added the most discriminatory language against LGBTQ folks they’ve ever had. I mean, they actually put in there that they support so-called “conversion” therapy and that kids are better off with a male/female parental combination.

      • Taiss says:

Same with the Muslim Americans for trump guy, when he was giving his speech, someone shouted: “no Islam” .

I hope they paid him enough to be there, and that he only did it for the money and knows there’s no place for him and other Muslims in the “great America”.

      • EscapedConvent says:

Oh my God. Is this circus real? A Mexican woman °who supports Trump° was booed because her parents are Mexican?! Mind. Officially. Blown. 😵

    • annaloo. says:

Look, I’m no huge mega nut for Clinton, but if one woman can have so many conservative men in a rage, then you can bet my vote is going to her.

The tone of the RNC is to be expected, and I’ve heard nothing but ass-backwards thinking– HOWEVER– I am puttiny money on the GOP millennials. They are the most interesting group in politics that no one is talking about and they don’t give two hoots about continuingthe GOP’s conservative social issues about LGBT, abortion, etc positions. There are still stalwarts, of course, but this party is late to change, but it is coming.

  3. Mika says:

Too late Melania, I’m enjoying all the parodies of your “speech”..especially this one
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHd6UzveDYc

    • David says:

Why would you make a video like that? Can you do one of Hillary too? 🙂

    • doofus says:

there’s a great one of video of Mrs. Drumpf with MO’s voice dubbed over, and it’s so FUNNY. Drumpf’s mouth is speaking the exact words you hear MO saying.

  4. LAK says:

Nevermind others checking it, how are Melania and this speech writer so stupid that they didn’t think anyone would notice the plagiarism from recently, very publicly made speeches?

I can understand plaguarising some obscure, nobody-heard-ever-heard-of-it speech. Still very wrong, but it would take awhile for the plagiarism to be discovered or noted.

….but use a speech made at a presidential convention by one of the key note speakers?!?!?!

    Stupid, dumb, and stupid.

    Both of them.

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

No one voting for the Trumpet cares that their team is dishonest and small minded- this is everyone else’s fault. I probably forced Melania to commit unintentional plagiarism. I will submit a public apology today.

    • Lucrezia says:

      I actually buy the excuse.

I don’t think they meant to get away with word-for-word plagiarism, I think they’re so incompetent they simply didn’t double-check the original source of the inspiration.

      • LAK says:

The speechwriter specifically said she made notes from Melania reading her parts of Michelle’s speeches that has inspired her. She specifically says they were discussing Michelle Obama.

It’s right there in the mea culpa note above.

I can understand being inspired by a speech and using the ideas in it as the basis for another one. It’s another to use entire sentences, word for word, from the original speech.

      • Lucrezia says:

We agree on what happened, it’s the why …

You’re saying they meant to pass it off as original, and were stupid to think we wouldn’t notice.

I’m saying they never intended to sneak it past us, they thought what they had was fine, they were stupid because they didn’t modify it enough. (Either they thought changing a few words made it okay or there was miscommunication and somehow the ballerina didn’t realise how close Melania’s notes were to the original or the ballerina took bad notes and forgot this part was a quote from Michelle.)

Either of us could be right. But, to me, knowingly trying to pass off plagiarism as original just seems unbelievably stupid. Mistakenly thinking the speech they had was okay (for whatever dumb reason) seems stupid, but believably so. Like La Ti Da says below, it is all too common in university. Most students caught plagiarising weren’t trying to fool the lecturer, they honestly thought their work was okay.

    • La Ti Da says:

Neither are speech writers or in any way involved in Politics. Melania likely didn’t even realize she’d get nailed as a plagiarist after she changed the words around. She simply isn’t engaged whatsoever in anything other than celebrity. I’m not calling her stupid, but I was a TA at a large University for two years and I can’t tell you how many times a student was shocked at being accused of plagiarism since they didn’t copy word for word the exact sentence. And those are people who’ve had fairly extensive instruction and warning about doing such a thing. As for McIver, she’s a ghostwriter, so she literally takes other people’s words and tweaks them to make their message more palatable. She’s used to having her work reviewed and edited by other professionals before it reaches the masses. It was just clusterf*ck.

    • Christin says:

Beyond the sheer stupidity, look who they are copying. MO is supposedly of the evil party, united with the terrible man who is responsible for everything bad that has happened (even things that technically happened under GWB).

That’s what the takeaway should be in all of this, but unfortunately most are probably missing it.

  5. Louise177 says:

What made the whole thing so funny is that Trump and his team were blaming everybody but themselves and making ridiculous excuses. My favorite was saying the My Little Pony had similar quotes.

  6. kiki says:

Melania Trump has been thrown under the bus. I feel sorry for her because these idiots did not check her speech and whether or not it is good or not. In addition, they (The RNC campaign) are covering their own assets, for God knows what. My fellow Americans, I just want to say vote with you conscience PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

  7. Jayna says:

That’s the most convoluted explanation. So parts of Michelle’s speech accidentally ended up in the final speech? Oops. That’s so easy to happen. LOL

And Melania read some of Michelle Obama’s passages over the phone to the woman? Okay. So when Melania is practicing over and over her speech from the final written speech,, she doesn’t notice that the passages she supposedly loved from Michelle’s speech and read over the phone as an example are now in her own speech that she’s giving at the RNC?

    Sure.

So this staffer for his Trump organization agrees to take the fall. Got it. The exact truth we’ll never know. But this was no accident, and there is no way Melania didn’t know she was reading Michelle’s words unless the beginning of the mea culpa letter was false and Melania never read her parts of Michelle’s speech over the phone as an example.

At this point, who knows and who cares? The rest of the convention is like a bad reality show that is going on. I need to go buy more popcorn.

    • Jan says:

I wonder how much Trump paid the speechwriter to trash her own reputation by taking the hit for this.

      • Neelyo says:

Knowing his past, she just got some empty promises of remuneration down the line which will somehow never materialize and if she asks for it she’ll be threatened by lawyers.

      • Kaye says:

        My thoughts exactly, Jan.

      • swak says:

He allowed her not to resign. That was her payment.

      • lucy2 says:

        Neelyo is right.
Whatever he promised to pay, she’ll get part, and then be told her apology wasn’t good enough to earn the rest. It’s how he’s done business for years.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

Does the speechwriter actually exist? Trump has pretended to be his own press agent before.

      • Christin says:

I truly wonder if the woman (assuming she exists) had anything to do with the speech at all.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Yes, exactly. If this is really what happened Melania belongs under the bus along with the speechwriter. She didn’t practice the speech (or even read it before giving it) and recognize the Michele Obama quotes Melania had provided to the speechwriter?

      • B n A fn says:

I don’t believe this last explanation to fiasco. I believe the person who helped with His wife speech was his son in law, Jared Kushner. He cannot be fired because he’s his daughter husband and he has been writing speeches for Donald. This woman is taking the fall for the team. Another thing, I do not trust anything coming out of anyone’s mouth on his team. They all lies for over two days. They even blamed Hillary saying she was jealous of MT and wanted to make trouble. As Berney Saunders says, Donald trump in a pathological liar.

      • april says:

I agree with B n A fn. I don’t believe the story about the speech writer goofing up. I think it was someone in the family like Jared or Ivanka.

  8. JenB says:

Blame Sparkle Pony! She’s the guilty party! (That reference by whatshisface was incredible.)

I think Melania is so over this whole campaign thing. I also wonder if Trump *really* wants to be President. Like, I wonder if he thought he was going to get this far.
The RNC people are getting a little over the top with the Hillary hate, even for them. They are becoming a really rabid mob, bit disturbing but not surprising.

    • Farah says:

According to the NYT, no. The Trump campaign approached John Kasich to be his VP. They told him he’d be the most powerful VP in history. Kasich would take care of domestic and foreign policies. When asked what Trump would handle, the Trump camp said “making America great again”

FACEPALM. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED. Remember the President Cheney jokes? This is going to be 100x worse.

    • Jayna says:

I think he wants it, but doesn’t want to be that involved. I really believe the sources surrounding the Governor Kasich story. Of course, the sources are coming out of Kasich’s own camp. Governor Kasich refused to come to the convention and refuses to endorse Donald Trump out of integrity, saying he was not prepared to President of the U.S.. I don’t agree with a lot of Governor Kasich’s ideology, but I respect that he refused to support someone who is so divisive as their nominee.

But here’s an excerpt from the NY Times below, where they were trying to woo Kasich as a possible VP.

“But according to the Kasich adviser (who spoke only under the condition that he not be named), Donald Jr. wanted to make him an offer nonetheless: Did he have any interest in being the most powerful vice president in history?

When Kasich’s adviser asked how this would be the case, Donald Jr. explained that his father’s vice president would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy.

‘Then what,’ the adviser asked,’ would Trump be in charge of?”

“Making America great again” was the casual reply.”

There’s more in-depth articles on this, but, obviously, Kasich authorized all of this leak. Trump is furious and denying it. LOL

      • Farah says:

I believe that he honestly didn’t think it would get this far, and now he’s just running on ego. He doesn’t care about governing, he just wants to be “the most powerful man on earth”

      • doofus says:

Farah’s got it right. he didn’t think he’d get this far; his ego won’t let him back down.

now, he just wants to win, he doesn’t want to actually do the job.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Jayna, your first sentence sums it all up nicely. He wants to plaster his name on something new, something YOOOGE. That’s his M.O.- name recognition only, no work involved, reap the gains, ignore failures and blame them on others.

      • Christin says:

Funny that he denies it, when I’ve linked a HuffPo article from May that other sources are now referencing, which quotes his team guy specifically saying DT sees himself as board chairman, not CEO or COO.

That seems to be very similar to what Kasich’s side is claiming the son spelled out in the offer.

    • TwighlightSparklePony says:

Melania and I have special friendship magic that allows for her to steal my thoughts!

Sean Spicer is right that myself and Kid Rock both said “This is your dream. Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now”.

But I also have special friendship magic with Kid Rock.

      And Michelle Obama.

      And John Legend.

      • farah says:

        @TwighlightSparklePony

Poor baby, you’re the REAL victim here. I think you should tell Team Trump “I’d very much like to be excluded from this narrative”.

  9. Birdix says:

The nyt article hilariously dances around calling her a stripper–says yes she studied ballet at SAB, but then took trips to Europe and thanked the owner of a Crazy Horse, a French strip place in her book.
All in all the story of her forgetting to check/change the quotes doesn’t add up. The Times even “liked” some comments saying as much.

  10. Aussie girl says:

So it was the ballerina….and she would have got away with it too if it wasn’t for the whole meddling American population… But I think the big reveal will be when they remove the ballerina’s mask to find Hilary underneath.. I couldn’t help it😁.

  11. Onerous says:

I love that people are seriously questioning this McIver person’s existence!

  12. Emily says:

    >> “In working with Melania on her recent first lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. ”

Omg amazing! Maybe Melania is a closet Dem. At the very least, I doubt she has any interest in becoming “First Lady”. Maybe she’ll secretly vote for Hillary.

    • lucy2 says:

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Melania and maybe Ivanka too secretly voted for Hillary. I think there may be a lot of Republicans secretly voting for her, and I can’t imagine either actually wants him doing the job.

    • Helen says:

I laughed while reading that imagining the rage strokes the quote probably gave Republicans. And I can only think that the speechwriter was still trolling by saying that..I mean it’s almost worse than the plagiarism..Melania looks up to and admires Michelle Obama. Hahahaha.

  13. Jayna says:

I love this in the NY Times.

“Mr. Palitz, a lawyer who has remained friends with Ms. McIver for decades, said that knowing her generally meticulous attention to detail, “it sounds like she sort of stepped up and fell on her sword.”

“It was not the first time Ms. McIver was faulted for lines she wrote for the Trumps.

“In a 2007 deposition, Mr. Trump was grilled over whether he had overstated his debt by billions of dollars in a couple of his co-written books to make his comeback seem more significant.

“He acknowledged the exaggeration, but the mistake, he said, was not his. “This is somebody that wrote it, probably Meredith McIver,” Mr. Trump said.”

So Trump has used Ms. McIver as a patsy before.

    • Christin says:

Perhaps Ms. McIver lives in seclusion with a Mr. John Miller, until she’s needed for ghostwriting damage control.

  14. Erin says:

I don’t see how that’s possible since Trump (who says the best and truest things) said that Melania (who is the most beautiful, smartest, accomplished, bestest lady ever) wrote the speech all by herself.

  15. Katenotkatie says:

I’ve said it before, but I swear this scenario played out on an episode of Veep. Funny then, terrifying now.

  16. Jenns says:

So everyone in the campaign swore that there was no plagiarism.

Until someone we never heard of came out an said the speech was plagiarized.

So who is lying here? But really, that question doesn’t matter. This just shows how utterly f**ked up this “campaign” is.

    • doofus says:

yeah, it was like “NOPE NEVER HAPPENED NOTHING TO SEE HERE” until they found someone to take the blame.

  17. Misvl says:

But the REAL question is : does this woman really exist? https://www.good.is/articles/will-the-real-meredith-mciver-stand-up

    • doofus says:

whoa. each of the social media and “employment” pages were created in the last 24-48 hours, and the pic she had on twitter was some pic stolen from a Pilates instructor’s page?!

what the F kind of sh*t show is Drumpf running?!

considering he’s made up personas to act as his “spokesperson” in the past, this is completely believable…

      • Erica_V says:

HAHA that’s what I said above. She’s about as real as John Miller is.

      • doofus says:

        or “John Barron”.

      • Christin says:

The name “John Barron” reminds me of Elvis’ assumed name, John Burrows. Supposedly there have been recordings by a John Burrows that people think is really Elvis, assuming he went into hiding.

Hey — that could be the RNC’s closing entertainment! “This is yuuuge — We have found Mr. John Burrows, who was a really, really big star by another name. He’s exclusively agreed, because he loves me so much, to come out after 39 years of hiding and perform for you tonight.”

    • Tiffany :) says:

OMG!!! That is so crazy it might be true! Holy cow!

    • Insomniac says:

In any other election year, that would seem strange …

  18. Sparkles says:

I’m scared. I have been watching snippets of the convention because I cannot stomach watching it in its entirety, but I am terrified. Watching the Fourth Reich in that convention hall has been nightmare inducing.

I don’t understand why the media lets Annoying Orange Trump get away with everythinggggg. Are journalists scared of him? Trump supporter Senator King basically said that only White people have contributed to civilization, a Trump advisor said “Hillary should be put in the firing line and shot for treason,” his son offered Kasich the Vice Presidency with full responsibility for domestic and foreign affairs while Trump is busy “making America great again.” Trump’s reply: “John Kasich was never asked by me to be VP.” HE didn’t, HIS SON did!!! Why isn’t this newsss! The only people who see this are the people who already go online and read from different news sources, not the ones that SHOULD hear it. Even George Stephanopoulos interviewed Trump about the plagiarized speech and he kind of just sat there, doe eyed, listening to Trump. He didn’t grill him on the matter AT ALL. WHY WHY WHY WHY??????

    • Jayna says:

I posted above about Governor Kasich. I agree. And the convention is in Kasich’s home state, and he refuses to attend or give a speech and is everywhere talking to delegates and fundraisers, except at the convention throwing his support for Trump in a speech. You can’t make these things up about the revolt within the party at their own convention.

I love the CNN article about the Kasich controversy and the quotes from both sides.

      An excerpt from it.

“But on Wednesday, another Trump aide dismissed the news of a vice presidential offer, which was first reported by The New York Times.

“Completely false. His vetting read like a trashy novel,” the aide said, when asked by CNN about the reports.

“The Trump campaign compiled a dossier on Kasich, but never actually vetted him.

“A source close to Kasich responded by saying, “Their comments are demonstrably false given the effort they put forward — and offer they made — to get Kasich to join the ticket. They must be confusing it with the file on Manafort, which must read like a Russian novella.”

“Trump sources have acknowledged, though, that long before Trump settled on Indiana Gov. Mike Pence for his running mate, top Trump aides viewed Kasich as their best bet for winning the White House in November.

“Kasich, however, has remained steadfast in his opposition to Trump, following a vicious Republican primary which tore the party in pieces. The Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign launched a concerted and sometimes public effort to woo Kasich back into the fold ahead in the weeks before the convention. But Kasich rebuked their advances.”

    • Sparkles says:

I couldn’t edit but I forgot to add-

Why isn’t he GRILLED about the fact that he wants to put people to work but both his clothes and Ivanka’s are made in China? Or the fact that he hasn’t released his taxes? Or the fact that his supposed charitable donations were made on the day that his charitable contributions were investigated and questioned????? Whyyyyyyyyy?????

      • lucy2 says:

There are some media outlets asking those questions, but the big ones only care about ratings, so they’re just letting him go Plus, his supporters don’t seem to care. It’s baffling, they’ll yell about whatever he’s yelling about, but excuse every hypocrisy.

    • Lynnie says:

My only hope is that now this plagiarism issue is “solved” some more interesting soundbites will come out from the convention and the media can do their job and report on that. The speech was too much of a distraction tbh

Apparently this speechwriter does not exist on linkedin or have any noticeable online presence. Weird for someone who needs to be known about to get and do her job.. *coughJohnBarroncough*

  20. Jade says:

The sad thing is none of their supporters care and will not change their vote anyway, even in the face of evidence. Good luck.

  21. TeamAwesome says:

I am a registered Democrat. In my first mock election as a kid, I voted for Dukakis. I am no fan of the Republican party, but I am sad for them. This shit show circus is beyond comprehension. There has been nothing of substance coming out of this convention. It has been a modern day “she’s a witch, burn her” Monty Python sketch. I 100% believe that Kasich story.

When this story broke my first thought was of COURSE they found a woman to fall on that sword.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Actually, they may have made up a woman to fall on a sword

    • lucy2 says:

I’m sad too. I’m an Independent, but I mostly vote Dem (because the GOP has gone batsh!t and offended me on so many levels) but I always want good, smart, capable candidates on both sides. I want to vote for my choice but feel like we’ll still be OK if the other one wins.

  22. Tiffany says:

I wonder if Melania is going to try for a divorce and a big settlement. She knows where the bodies are buried. She could not have gotten out of Cleveland fast enough after the speech.

  23. Insomniac says:

Heh. I’m sure Trump fans will forgive the plagiarism, but I bet Melania never completely recovers from the writer’s statement that she — *gasp* — admires Michelle Obama!

    • JenniferJustice says:

I’d be more upset that the writing team stated publicly that they only use “fragments of my thoughts.” You know, ’cause I can’t think for myself and my thoughts are so….fragmented.

  24. TwighlightSparklePony says:

Shut up, Meredith, and give me credit for my speech!

  25. OTHER RENEE says:

    Ah Speechgate. I love it.

  26. Tesch100 says:

Perhaps it took a day of negotiating how much this person was going to get paid for saying it was her fault was only a day. Or, it took a day for them to find someone to accept the number that they were willing to pay.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Or it took their interns a couple of days to create her fake persona. My money is on that.

      • doofus says:

        ^^^THIS, completely.

this person’s entire online presence was created over the past 24-48 hours.

  27. KiddVicious says:

I now can’t look at Melania without seeing Caitlyn, thanks CB. Now that Melania has embarrassed Trump he can just switch her out with Caitlyn, no one with notice.

    • Lisa says:

LOL! I’m sure Kris Jenner would loooooove to have Donald Trump and Caitlyn on a very special episode of KUWTK.

  28. holly hobby says:

If this wasn’t happening to us I’d be laughing right now. I’m furious that this is the best the Repubs have to offer as a candidate. I can’t imagine what the founding fathers think of this shit show.

On the other hand, I am greedily waiting for Game Change 3. I read 1, never finished 2 because it was sort of boring but I’m sure #3 will be great – only if Hilary wins. I’d problably cry if Orangino won.

  29. JenniferJustice says:

So, it’s everybody’s fault except Marshmallow elbows’ or Rump’s? Is he telling us he never even looked at her speech – not once? I don’t believe it.

    • Adele Dazeem says:

Agreed. And better yet, I know Melania isn’t a Mensa member, but my fourth grade nephew knows the definition–and punishment–for plagiarism. Even if she did like Michelle’s ‘thoughts,’ she had to realize she’d get busted for outright copying, right??

  30. greenmonster says:

I really want this to be an intern sabotage. Here are my theories:

    1. It’s Melania. Someone has written a speech for her and she is the one who put Michelle Obama’s words in. She doesn’t want to be FLOTUS. She doesn’t want to work. She wants to stay in her ivory tower, spent lots on money and look pretty.
    2. It’s Donald himself. He never thought he would get this far. Now he can’t back down, because then he would have to admit that he is a clueless orange clown. So he says the most outragous things (hoping people would finally wake up), picks the worst candidate as running mate and hands Melania a plagiarized speech and throws her under the bus.
    3. (and that would so glorious and my favorite) It’s Ivanka. She usually came across as smart and likeable. So what if Ivanka (and her husband) can see right through her father and see him for what he really is? She might know that Donald is no presidential material. But since his ego is so big, he wouldn’t even listen to his golden child, when she tells him to step down. Esp. when his sons (who might be crying out loud for his attention and approval) tell him the opposite. So, what if Ivanka has given those words to Melania or the speechwriter? She wouldn’t be open about her disapproval of his politics, but she might be stabbing him in the back secretly.

    • Lisa says:

The last one would be so deliciously glorious if it were true. Unfortunately Ivanka and her husband seem to love all the attention along with rest of the Trump family. I think all of them have massive egos just like Donald or are at least a little scared of crossing him because he signs all their paycheques. OT but I wonder what Ivana thinks about this whole sh*tshow.

      • Christin says:

The whole family – golden daughter included – are likely not as brilliant as presented. I completely agree that she seems to be basking in the attention.

Ivana’s take on it would be interesting, indeed.

  31. Xtrology says:

Her real name is Melanija. And try to pronounce that the way she pronounces Melania. Nothing real about this girl. My opinion: Melanija did it on purpose. She doesn’t want to be First Lady. That would require work. And she’s mad a The Donald.

    • Ann says:

? In eastern euro languages, the J is a Y sound. So yes, even with the J, you still would pronounce it Melania (more like Melan-ya, I believe, instead of Me-lan-ee-ah) – she just took out the J so that people wouldn’t be inclined to pronounce the letter J, which would be incorrect.

  32. Zombie Shortcake says:

“A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama.”
Lol Be sure to not laud too much praise on MO there.

  33. Ann says:

It was so gracious of Melania to say she admired Michelle’s speech. What a class act. I can’t wait for the Trump family to get into the White House.
