Third Eye Blind trolled Republicans: ‘Raise your hand if you believe in science!’

One of the most amusing and most reposted stories I’ve seen on Facebook this week (although it’s been a great week for gossip overall) involves a charity concert in Cleveland given by Third Eye Blind (“Semi-Charmed Life,” “Jumper,” “Deep Inside of You“). The band was playing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on behalf of Musicians on Call, which brings music artists to visit hospital patients. It wasn’t an official RNC event, but there were of course many RNC attendees there. Third Eye Blind refused to play any of their hits except “Jumper,” which is about the suicide of lead singer Stephan Jenkins’s gay cousin. Jenkins introduced the song by talking about gay rights and it was awesome. He also asked the crowd if they believed in science. When he got booed he told them he was the artist. It was incredible. Jenkins has been outspoken about his political beliefs and told Rolling Stone last September that he was embarrassed on behalf of Republican candidate Marco Rubio’s lack of understanding of climate change. Rolling Stone explains it better than I can.

Third Eye Blind trolled an audience filled with Republican National Convention attendees during a charity concert at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Tuesday night, with singer Stephan Jenkins continually blasting the GOP and antagonizing the crowd with remarks like, “Raise your hand if you believe in science…”

Knowing his audience, Jenkins used the microphone to condemn Republican ideology and perform a set list that refrained from playing any Third Eye Blind hits. At one point, after someone in the audience loudly booed the band, Jenkins responded, “You can boo all you want, but I’m the motherf-king artist up here,” Cleveland.com reports.

The one Nineties hit Third Eye Blind did play was “Jumper,” a song inspired by the suicide of Jenkins’ gay friend. The singer prefaced the performance by telling the crowd, “To love this song is to take into your heart the message and to actually have the feeling to arrive and move forward and not live your life in fear [not] imposing that fear on other people.”

After the concert, Third Eye Blind’s Twitter continued to prod Republicans. When one fan tweeted their disappointment regarding Tuesday’s show, the band responded “Good.” Another tweet asked whether the band was concerned that their actions would hurt the charity, to which the group replied, “Great question. We were not, as Musicians on Call were well aware of who we are and our take on things (like science and rights!)”

[From Rolling Stone]

Not only did Jenkins cleverly troll the Republicans at the event, he’s also given follow up interviews explaining his position. He told Rolling Stone that “The fact that I’m onstage 19 years after I wrote [“Jumper”] and we’re still talking about equal dignity for the LGBTQ community is absurd. But we are. And to yell ‘Who believes in science?’ and have half the room boo is [laughs] … their ideology is crumbling.” Hear hear! He also said that it was antithetical that the Republican party rejects Black Lives Matter. “Black Lives Matter is saying that people are unduly under threat, which is right down the middle of Republican framework. It’s a pro-police idea, meaning that we want good police … who aren’t going to imprison people on racist grounds. There’s nothing more Republican. I’m pro-police and so is Black Lives Matter.”

Jenkins called into TMZ live yesterday, where he explained that he didn’t know ahead of time that the benefit gig would have so many people from the convention. He said “My mother is a Republican… we love Republicans [and] believe in the gathering power of music. What we don’t believe in is the RNC and the grotesque who they have made their nominee.” He also answered “Yeah” when Harvey Levin asked if not playing “Semi-charmed Life” was punishment. I think I’m about to go listen to Third Eye Blind’s new album on Spotify. It’s called Dopamine.

Here’s Jenkins introducing “Jumper”:

    Kudos!

They popped up on my satellite radio the other day. And I’m like “Wait. I haven’t heard this. IS THIRD EYE BLIND MAKING NEW MUSIC!” I was so excited. I have a huge soft spot for the band, and I really love that they are willing to do something like that, and happily discuss it in interviews in such an intelligent way.

To me, “Semi-Charmed Life” is the song of the 90’s. That whole album was great. I used to have such a crush on Stephan. This story makes me love them even more!

    I love him

Like the man said its ridiculous, but here we are?

I do wish the anti-science crowd would take their feelings more to heart and stop visiting doctor’s offices and taking any necessary medication.

Also the irony of the ‘small govt.’ party’s whole hearted and at times rabid defense of ALL police has been amusing. Seems the only time they want a small govt is when it comes time to pay taxes or take responsibility. If not for that they’d have handed over the reigns to the govt. long ago with some of the foaming at the mouth diatribes about any criticism of police I’ve seen lately.

I totally agree. If you are a person who fights against scientific advancement you should be banned from reaping the benefits of those advancements.

      • LinaLamont says:

They don’t believe in evolution because when they look in the mirror, they see no evidence of it looking back.

      • Matomedah says:

I have 3 advanced science degrees, and I’m a current activist for cancer and heart disease research, so I’ll never argue against science! But aren’t a lot of the anti vaxer, anti food development, etc people the most liberal? Man I hate the mixing of politics, religion, and science. I get it, but life philosophies across all aspects of life aren’t easy to reduce as one solid platform sound bite. Neither party represents me well, certainly not in practice of what either actually passes.

      • LinaLamont says:

        @Matomedah

        Science degree here, too.

It’s a matter of numbers. The anti-vaxers are vocal, but, not nearly as numerous as the anti– evolution, global warming, science… The Republicans (the hardcore right) summarily dismiss science and facts across the board. They far outnumber the liberal anti-vaxers.

Yes, stupid is stupid; ignorant is ignorant.

BUT, can’t support fracking… looking at you, Hillary.

      • Helen says:

Matomedah, in answer to your question about anti-vaxxers being liberal, I would answer, not in my experience. In my experience, the ones I know are the OC housewives types of ladies (most of whom are vocal Republicans because, you know, their “hubbies” are) who think reading one article in their health and wellness magazine makes them experts on everything and who believe their snowflake is the most special of all. When I think of liberals, I don’t think Jenny McCarthy or Kristen Cavallari come to mind.

      • Melly says:

Who cares what your political affiliation is? If you don’t appreciate science and the benefits we get from it, you’re dumb. I don’t care if you’re an anti-vaxxer, anti-global warming, anti-evolution, etc. They are all the same. Science and facts aren’t a buffet, you don’t get to pick and choose what science fits with your world view.
If you’re anti-science, you should move to Idiot Island and live a life free of science where you can deny facts and reason without negatively impacting the rest of us. Consequently, you’ll likely die an early death from something entirely preventable. Boo hoo.

      • LinaLamont says:

        @Melly
“Who cares what your political affiliation is?”

I CARE. Because policy is determined by the party in power.

      • Melly says:

        @LinaLamont
I was attempting to make the point that anyone who doesn’t appreciate science belongs on Idiot Island, regardless of political affiliation.

      Savage.

    • doofus says:

yup, no radio, no tv, no cel phone (no phone at all!), no computer/internet…in fact, NO LIGHT BULBS FOR YOU!

      • meow says:

in fact, they should re-think their stance on the very scientific act of breathing.

  5. Lucy says:

    Hats off to them. Genius.

  6. Melly says:

I saw them live at some event a year or so ago and they were really good. When you hear some bands play live you cringe because they sound so different from the album version, but not these guys!
It’s terribly depressing when you can troll people by asking if they believe in science.

  7. Saras says:

Hilarious! Great they trolled the RNC. They are against so many rights we fought for so get out and vote! Especially women, minorities, and anyone who want to have the freedom to love / marry who you want!

  8. Freddy Spaghetti says:

This is one of my favorite things ever. Ever!

  9. Taiss says:

TRUMPette twitter was so mad last night, it was hilarious.

Speaking of #blm another unarmed black man shot by the police! at least this time he didn’t die. Smh.

  10. LindaBelcher says:

While I love this and it makes me giggle, I have to say, I saw him in concert a year ago and it was pretty bad. It was for a radio promotion and you could tell he had checked out of the performance before he even came on stage. He only played like two hits, and the others I had never heard of. It was over before my feet even started to hurt from my cute, but painful shoes. So I applaud that he trolled Trump fans, but dude should get some humility, and fast.

  11. YooOoooo! says:

I’m going to see them today in Stamford, CT!

  12. Luca76 says:

    This is awesome.
I remember when their song was big and we all considered it pretty lame. Sort of funny because the music out now makes their stuff sound like masterpieces.

  13. Tourmaline says:

    Awesome sauce.

  14. Marty says:

    This was amazing.

  15. Alex says:

I saw them live recently as well and they were great. I love that they took a stand and its funny that the ENC doesn’t seem to be aware that their biggest hits have heavy cultural/slightly political matter associated with them.

  16. JenB says:

Exactly. It’s astounding that in some cases otherwise pretty intelligent people choose to believe politicians over scientists about global warming. And they just stonewall ALL of the science. It reminds me a bit like how some scientists were persecuted because the argued that the earth revolved around the sun. Hundreds of years later we still have religious extremists saying “pfft” to proven science.
Maaan, Jenkins is looking mighty fine, after all these years! And bonus hot for trolling the RNC.

  17. The Old KC says:

TEB fan here – I was a fan in the 90’s and still a big fan now. “Never Let You Go” is one of my all-time favorite summer pop tunes. When I saw TEB in concert back in the late 90’s, they put on an absolutely amazing show. They were obviously not just studio rock musicians. Stephan Jenkins is a great musician and writer, and an all-around cool guy (he used to date The Charlize, for God’s sake!) and during their concert I attended, the band pulled a 10-year-old boy onstage from the crowd and played the kid’s request of his favorite song, “Motorcycle Driveby”. (That kid must be in his 20’s now and I bet he never forgot that moment.) They obviously care about science, children, politics and the future of this country. I think that makes them, dare I say it, patriots. I’m so excited they’re speaking out because the current state of politics in America is abysmal and terrifying.

One more thing – I didn’t realize, until I became a big fan of yoga in the early 2000’s and began teaching it, that the name “Third Eye Blind” refers to the yogic Third Eye, which is imagined to be on the forehead between our two physical eyes. This Third Eye represents our intuition and our ability to see truth, and is considered one of the major Chakras or energy centers in the body. So, if one is “Third Eye Blind”, that means they’re kind of fumbling through life, unable to trust their own gut instinct/intuition. Given the level of awareness on behalf of the band, I’d say they’re definitely not third eye blind.

Rock on, guys!!! You make me proud. 🙂

  19. JLo says:

My BF saw them years ago and the lead was so drunk/stoned, he couldn’t stand. He sat in a chair, sang incoherently and passed out. Impressive…

What really bugs me is they were performing at a benefit. Suck it up and be professional. Trolls suck, even if they share your views.
