Jon Stewart’s RNC mic-drop: ‘This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it’

late show

Stephen Colbert has been making a return to political satire in a big way this week at The Late Show. Colbert even asked for help from his friend and mentor Jon Stewart, and Stewart has been making appearances on The Late Show throughout the week for the RNC coverage. Last night, Stewart joined Colbert at the desk to discuss Fox News and Donald Trump. And now everyone is talking about it – “Jon Stewart” and “You Don’t Own America” were trending on Twitter throughout the morning.

First, Colbert and Stewart reacted to the news that Fox News CEO Roger Ailes is finally out, following a (still incomplete) investigation into Ailes’ conduct around female employees. We learned this week that Ailes would be exiting Fox News sooner rather than later, and on Thursday, the announcement came. Ailes is out and Rupert Murdoch is stepping in as CEO for the time being (probably through the election). After that, Jon and Stephen tackled Donald Trump’s RNC speech. The entire video is pretty much a liberal/progressive raised fist.

He had me at “a thin-skinned narcissist with no government experience.” But the whole thing is beautiful. “Angry groundhog” and “Inject Rudy Giuliani with a speedball and Red Bull enema” and “I’m sure it’s easy for people without ethics or principles to embrace someone who embodies everything they said they hated about the previous president for the past eight years.” But this was the most beautiful part:

“You just want that person to give you your country back, because you feel you’re this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that: This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no real America. You don’t own it. You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police, and firefighters. Trust me. I saw a lot of people on the convention floor in Cleveland with their Blue Lives Matter rhetoric, who either remained silent or actively fought against the 9/11 first responders bill reauthorization. I see you, and I see your bulls—t. I see it! You’ve got a problem with those Americans fighting for their place at the table. You got a problem with them because you feel like – what’s Rep. Steve King’s word for it? – subgroups of America are being divisive. If you have a problem with that then take it up with the founders. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.”

Boom! Mic drop. And all this does is remind me that I miss Jon Stewart so much. We’ve really needed him this year. I think he knew that.

I LOVE JON STEWART. OH PLEASE, PLEASE COME BACK.

    • zinjojo says:

I know he’s off rescuing animals and doing good work, but darn, I’ve missed Jon Stewart SO MUCH and have needed him to get me (us!) through this horrible trainwreck of an election.

      • Kiki says:

I knoooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww! I know most people don’t like Hillary Clinton, without any reasons but would you rather bigot, insensitive, whiny baby Donald Trump for you prez? I really miss Jon Stewart because he speaks the truth and straight shooter. God HELP US ALL AND AMERICA.

    • Jenns says:

I was coming here to write the same comment in all caps.

I miss him so much. WE NEED YOU, JON!

    • Merteuil says:

Without reason? Benghazi? There’s just one reason anyone with a brain needs.
We’re doomed with Trump and Hilary.

      • cr says:

Benghazi isn’t actually a reason to dislike Hillary. Sorry, but that’s all Republican propaganda and wasting of that precious tax payer money that Republicans claim to care so much about.
There are actual policy issues to disagree with her on, but Benghazi is propaganda.

      • MsGoblin says:

        CR, you are correct.

Merteuil, after spending $5 million investigating, it had to be admitted that Secretary Clinton was not responsible. Additionally, the republicans voted to cut the security budget and, therefore, left the compound with even fewer resources for defense.

Time to stop watching Fox “news”.

      • Merteuil says:

MsGoblin, do try to continue reading. I clarified. Come on now, Fox News is a LOW blow. I can actually admit when I’m wrong. But the hive mind has shown itself.

      • Ann says:

Benghazi is not propaganda. And hiLIARy letting down our Americans is only the tip of the iceberg, sadly.

    • Merteuil says:

It was proven she lied and held knowledge of the torture and death of our ambassador- least I believed. Republican propaganda or not, no thank you. theres really no winning. And I’ll be damned if I vote for Hilary based on the fact we share genders. Lucifer is a better candidate than these two.

      • Johio says:

No, if it had been proven she lied, the Republican led investigations would have said so. There were 8 investigations done and all agreed that whole the security should have been better, no one could have rescued the 4 lost there. Again, this was conclusion of Republican led committees and you know they would have burned her if they possibly could.

      • Merteuil says:

You’re not wrong about that. They’d be yelling it to the rooftops. I was misinformed. However it still won’t make me vote for Hilary. Ever.

      • cr says:

        Amb. Stevens wasn’t tortured.
        http://www.snopes.com/POLITICS/military/stevens.asp

You don’t have to like, or vote for, Hillary. But if you really believe Trump=Hillary you are not paying attention.
ETA: since CB is eating my comments, I’ll add ‘you were misinformed’ about the torture and reports. Except that information has been out there for years, and you chose to believe the Republicans instead of reading for yourself, because of your hatred of Hillary.
You can not like her and still be factual about her, you have chosen not to be.

      • Blueflie says:

May as well not even try Merteuil. I watch these “the sky is falling” comments on this website everyday. I’m with you, she flat out lied about that, and the email scandal was a disaster. The email fiasco alone could and probably put this country in jeopardy. It was daily reading for other governments to catch up on in real time. I don’t know anyone could think how that is ok.

      • Merteuil says:

I’ve been paying attention enough. But I’m still not going to side with the lesser of two evils. Especially one that has always been against gay rights but changed her mind when she thought she would gain those votes. America will be burned to the ground with Trump or Hilary in office. She’s the standard politician that lies about her wants to gain public appeal. Every single one does it. Hilary is just unfortunate enough to have her previous statements on video for the world to see. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Blueflie, I don’t understand why people quickly dismiss Hilary just because she’s facing off against the new aged Hitler-Trump. Lesser of two evils is still evil.

      • bluhare says:

It *is* about the lesser of two evils. I don’t like Hillary either, but I think she will do much less damage than Donald Trump. This is an awful election slate. I thought I would be so thrilled to see a woman running for President, but I wish is was not Hillary Clinton.

      • cr says:

        @Merteuil:
        “I’ve been paying attention enough.”
Obviously not enough to still have believed that Amb. Stevens was tortured at Benghazi.
I’ll repeat: You don’t have to like Hillary, or vote for her. But you’re deliberately filtering what you hear to fit what you want, and to convince yourself that Trump=Hillary.
I remember this crap from the 2000 election, Bush wouldn’t be any worse than Gore, etc. That turned out to be crap, and so is Hillary=Trump.
Is Hillary my ideal candidate? Hell no. But she really is much preferable to Trump/Pence. Really.
And for all this complaining about how horrible they both are, are you even paying attention to the lower end of the ticket in your state? Are you supporting and voting for your type of candidate in local and state elections? Because that’s going to make a difference, both in the support, or lack thereof, the winner gets when they take office, and what kind of candidates that can be fielded nationally.

      • Merteuil says:

I agree with you other than the first part. It’s rediculous that it’s come to this. Id rather Obama do another term and then next election see if something better is there. Our representatives do not truly represent the people. We wouldn’t have regressed ethically or morally as a nation if they had done so. The majority aren’t happy with how our country is going.

      • cr says:

“Our representatives do not truly represent the people. We wouldn’t have regressed ethically or morally as a nation if they had done so. The majority aren’t happy with how our country is going. ”
But this isn’t entirely true, they do represent the people. Not everyone, but Trump is actually appealing to a great number of people.
People tend to vote against their self-interest, if they vote at all. So if people don’t like the way the country is going, they need to start actually paying attention and actually vote, in every election. And stop saying ‘my vote doesn’t matter’. It does, especially in the smaller elections.

      • Jwoolman says:

The e-mail scandal was a mountain made out of a molehill. When she set up the private server for private e-mail, it was not against the rules. The rules were changed in an attempt to make leakage of classified information harder. There is simply no evidence that she actually compromised classified information.

      • bluhare says:

I would totally be up for calling the election off and giving Obama another term, Merteuil!

      • Scotchy says:

        Merteuil,
What you want won’t happen. Obama has to leave. Sometimes in life we have to do what is for the greater good of all. A vote for Hilary is a greater good for all., because a racist, dictator is running against her and you don’t want that man in charge. Abstaining or throwing your vote is helping Trump get in, which is dangerous, and foolish.
Also when voting pay attention to the senate seats up for grabs, and as those positions hold a lot of power, almost more than the president.

Needless to say the US is in a precarious position and I for one want to see it get better not worse.

I am sure you are a nice person, but your thinking in this election is very very dangerous. I am sorry you guys have horrible choices, but please make the right one. I say this as a beige woman/part time resident that is very fortunate to work in the US but if Trump gets in fears that may not be possible, because he doesn’t like beige/brown migrants, even ones that earn a lot of money and pay a substantial amount of taxes for that privilege. People like me that love and admire this country and don’t want to see it torn apart.

So your vote affects my life. Please swallow it and know it’s only 4 years and then it will change.. Another candidate will rise…

      • Original T.C. says:

The Benghazi report actually showed that Hillary Clinton was not responsible for the death of the ambassador not was he tortured. In fact, they found intelligence report from the CIA and lack of communication to her and others were the biggest problems in Benghazi. I find it ironic that people who hate Hillary and call her a liar have only lies to back up their hate for her. Their arguments are usually built of sand. Or regarding her husband’s cheating. Over-looking that in policy she has always championed women and children.

I don’t want to have beer with her but she is the most experienced candidate for the office in decades: Lawyer, First Lady, senatator, Secretary of State. In fact being a woman seems to be seen as her DIS-qualification. She is a regular politician but as a woman she should be angelic and wholesome. If a White man with her experience was running for office it would be a no-brainer.

      • isabelle says:

It has been investigated over and over again. Republicans aren’t even beating a dead horse anymore they are beating a dinosaur.

      • Meegs says:

Merteuil is a TROLL who has a Repub b0n*r for BENGHAZI!! and PRIVATE SERVER!!, just like the right wing demos have brainwashed via Fox News, to the set of the population who is content to not question or independently verify the veracity of what is presented to them. SAD!

As flawed as she is, if you equate Hillary and Donald effing Trump as equal evils, or that HRC is the worse evil, you are a terrible judge of facts, let alone character.

      • Merteuil says:

Well actually, calling me a troll is giving me far too much credit. If having an opinion that isn’t yours is a troll- so be it. I bet you think you’re clever. People can be unaware- especially with our American media which shows what it would like to show.

They BOTH are evil you twit.

But really, I’ll let you all in on something. I’m writing a paper for my bachelors that has to do with bullying on social media. I’ve screen grabbed all the comments above. Some weren’t that bad in the way of just giving their opinion. But then there were some that were just downright rude, disrespectful, and if you were to say that to someone in person- you wouldn’t walk away unscathed. Using the Internet as a crutch then crying foul when your words are used in ways such as it will be used. Don’t worry, I’m using Facebook comments as well. Your names will not be blocked out. Thank you to the very few that were as nice as they could be with their comments.

For the record, how I truly feel about the politicians and my political view is not translated here. Above was an experiment to see who would come to try to unload wisdom before insults. 🙂

    • Algernon says:

He has a TV deal with HBO, and will be hosting his own show on HBO by the end of the year. They say he’ll come back in time for the election. I think his appearances on Colbert are as much about getting back in the groove as they are about helping his friend with his ratings problem.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I LOVE Jon and I wish he would come back, but I have to say, Trevor Noah is doing a really good job with the Daily Show.

      • Alyce says:

I can’t get into Trevor Noah’s style. Did the writers leave with Stewart? I just feel like it isn’t as funny.

      • Wilma says:

Yeah, I love the new Daily show too! But I do get the feeling that this has something to do with being European. There definitely have been changes in tone.

      • Persephone says:

I’m loving the show too, I’d stopped watching but thought I’d check out the new guy and haven’t missed an episode since.

    • H says:

      Stewart/Colbert 2020!

Oh GOD! I miss him so much! I NEED you ! Your COUNTRY NEEDS YOU JON STEWART!!!!

    • Melly says:

I’ve missed Jon Stewart so bad during this crazy election

    • nicegirl says:

      cr: You are smart. 🙂

Come back Jon!!! We need you!!! He speaks the truth!

Arrogant and ignorance is not going to move us forward as a country.

  5. cyn says:

I love Jon Stewart. That is all.

    • Little Darling says:

Sigh, me too. Coming here to say the exact same thing. I am a Jersey girl and I love him. LOVE him. These two always always make me feel better.

  6. Pinky says:

    • Algernon says:

He’s got one. HBO gave him a huge contract. He’s developing a new show for HBO.

  7. nicole says:

this site is getting too political for me… if we were talking about trumps hair and orange face or hillarys manic smile for fun, sure okay! just won’t click on these stories anymore. i come here for the light stuff.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Like domestic abuse (e.g. Johnny Depp) or discussions about racism? This site has been including serious topics for a long time.

      • ab says:

and this is one of the few sites where the commenters can have discussions about serious topics without descending into pure madness.

      • nicole says:

i dunno, i can’t remember which of the writers said it, but one of them once said they stay away from the heavy news (years ago) and that has seemed to change, especially with the election. i get that even the light stuff can be sprinkled with big issues, but over that last few years, i’ve noticed more and more social stories than celebrity stories. i agree the commenters on here are far more normal and intelligent than any news outlet site out there, but i’m not here to discuss politics. i’m here to read gossip and make judgy comments on fashion. as i said, i’ll just stay away from these stories , but just wanted to put my opinion out there.

      • Maria says:

I agree, what I love about this site and why it’s the only gossip one I read, it’s because I don’t feel it treats us as airheads. I think its target are smart, well-rounded women who just happen to love celebrity gossip too.

    • greenmonster says:

I understand where you are coming from, I guess 🙂

But to be honest, I rather read and discuss about Trump and Clinton (because this is one of the few sites where people have actual discussions without cursing each other out), than read another article about Taylor Swift and why people hate her.

      • Betsy says:

Me too. I’m only a casual Tay Tay fan, but good gravy – some people on here really, really hate her. For a facade she has constructed? Who cares? She has a public persona at odds with her reality, she hasn’t been torturing bunnies in her basement or lighting small children on fire.

      • Mltpsych says:

Yes this!! So much hate for Taylor. So she has a fake persona, she is an entertainer – most of them do. Calvin Harris is a fake name so we would think Adam was a Black DJ. Fake. Kimye FAKE!! Why is it so important to tear this girl down?

      • noway says:

Yes!!!! We found out Taylor Swift can be as fake as Kim Kardashian’s butt, and in more news Trump’s hair is orange. People seem so upset when the image they were presented of a pop star isn’t exactly the reality. Imagine how a large portion of the US electorate are going to feel when Trump decides to show what he really wants and can do if elected. Talk about a person overselling themselves with an image he isn’t. Blue collar billionaire? Yes Jon is right that isn’t a thing. Trump looks like a used car salesman, yet a large portion of the public doesn’t see it.

As far as this site going toward politics, I think when one of the candidates for President is a reality tv star the gossip sites should have full reign. It is there areas after all.

    • Angelica says:

That’s unfortunate. I like the political side of this site because it doesn’t take it too seriously a lot of times. Revisiting statements that have the funniest lines to give us all a laugh and such. Political sites usually take themselves too seriously, even though many issues are serious, it’s still fun to poke holes in politicians when they fumble, while getting the important messages across. I love it, I barely read any other sites for coverage anymore. But that’s just me, of course.

    • Snowflake says:

Don’t read the political ones, just click on the gossip ones

      • mary s says:

@Nicole do what Snowflake suggested. This site is nice that way, in that there is something for everyone. I love the socio-cultural stories and comments, and I’ve learned a lot from the thoughtful comments themselves. Sometimes, though, depending on how the comments are trending, I need to scroll through to find celebitches who agree with my PoV. Like, I love KStew’s look, but most comments seem to be negative about her style choices. I can understand if one’s political thoughts lean toward the right, you wouldn’t enjoy the political posts, since the site is definitely liberal in thought.

    • Tate says:

We are in some pretty serious times. It is ok for us to discuss what is happening and the impact it could have on all of us. All of the Taylor/Kimye stories annoy me so I just don’t click on them. Problem solved.

  8. Lucy says:

President Jon Stewart. How’s that sound? 🙂

  9. Sullivan says:

Right on, Jon! Damn, I loved this. It was just what I needed.

  10. lucy2 says:

    We really, really needed that.
I understand why Jon was done and he is taking some well deserved time off, but I’m so grateful he came back to do that. The 9/11 first responder bill comments were SPOT ON.
He flat out destroyed “Lumpy” (aka Sean Hannity) too, so bonus.

  11. Nona says:

That clip was beautiful! I miss him so much!!! And damn, is he good looking or what?

  12. Mia4s says:

Brilliant and more importantly….true. Bravo Jon Stewart!

Calling out those “Blue Lives Matter” people who fought the 9/11 responders bill is an absolute mic drop. He should name names. They are jumping on a bandwagon to fear monger. They don’t give a damn about cops unless it suits their agenda.

While we are at it can we call out the morons who passed the ridiculous transgender bathroom laws in the name of “protecting women and children”, but won’t lift a finger to ensure funding for testing of rape kits? You know, something that would get actual rapists of the street. Seriously they can go to hell.

I fear for you America, I really do.

  13. Trinity says:

    Oh that was perfect!!!

  14. Jayna says:

I miss Jon. It was so amazing watching this. He is brilliant and spot on. I couldn’t stop smiling from beginning to end.

    “Lumpy.” LOL

  15. Bonzo says:

    MOAR Jon Stewart! MOAR Colbert!

    #StewartColbert2020

  16. Saraya says:

Nobody can build a strawman quite like Jon Stewart. The dude has a black belt in logical fallacy.

    • Betsy says:

      Like for example.

    • Veronica says:

A strawman’s argument requires interjecting and arguing point the original party didn’t make. That’s not what’s on display here. He directly quoted criticism made of Barack Obama and juxtaposed it with the reception toward Donald Trump. His point on the definition of “our America” also isn’t a strawman’s argument because it’s directly engaging one of the fundamental principles put forth by the Trump campaign – “Make America Great Again.” The idea behind “making America great again” implies that everybody agrees the America of the past was great in the first place. Not everybody does, nor does the methodology their encouraging reflect what everybody thinks is the way to fix it. You might not agree with him, but that doesn’t mean he’s creating logical fallacies out of nothing. Biased? Sure. But I didn’t vote for Obama in the last election, and I completely agree that the GOP is completely undermining their own principles just to win this election. It’s one of the few points of respect I have for Ted Cruz that he refused to compromise his position to endorse Trump.

  17. La Ti Da says:

I wonder if they are really going to retool the Late Show or Colbert is already gone. As Jon was going off I kept wondering if Colbert hadn’t decided to go down in a blaze of glory for the next few months.

    • Veronica says:

I think he’s on his way out, honestly. Political satire is really where Colbert thrives, and the more sanitized world of late night television doesn’t really allow him to explore that.

  18. Snowflake says:

Omg, he is awesome! He’s sexy, i just wanna eff the heck outta him!

  19. Tiffany27 says:

This is exactly what I needed to hear after reading an acceptance speech from an angry cheeto named Donald Trump. Come back Jon!!

  20. mire usted! says:

Welcome home Jon! We missed you! Colbert’s show has been amazing this whole week! He should win another Emmy next year! I pray his show stays on. I like Fallon but as a Gen-Xer, I can only take watching Fallon smash eggs on a celebrity’s forehead for so long. Colbert has a more intellectual spin. He’s silly but his jokes have a bite. I do think it’s hard to move on from his old show’s character – he perfected it. His show needs revamping a bit – like this week! I can’t wait for Jon Stewart’s new HBO show. He has to be on cable.

  21. Little Darling says:

OH man, did I need this today. This was incredible!!!!!

  22. Kilo Tango says:

Jon Stewart articulated so well what seems so outrageous to me about right wing politics in the US. He is great and I hope his new show comes to the UK 😀

  23. Green_Eyes says:

    TRUTH! TRUTH!! TRUTH!!!

  24. Cheryl says:

So true, so perfectly said, so needed right now!!

And – anyone else want scruffy, tan, salt and pepper Jon Stewart to do funny things to them? No? Just me?

  25. The Original Mia says:

Mic drop indeed. Once again, it’s Jon Stewart bringing the truth about the Republicans because we can’t trust the MSM to do it anymore. They are too busy catering to them and paying them consultation fees to do their jobs and call out all this racist/misogynistic/isolationist bs.

  26. Kath says:

I’m scared sh-tless about this election and I really don’t understand how it has gotten to this point. If the Bernie supporters stay home, we’re stuffed.

And, speaking as a non-American… Trump is treading a fine line with his rhetoric about NATO etc. I think a Trump presidency will be the end of the ANZUS treaty and the ‘special relationship’ with the UK, just for starters.

    It is truly scary.

    • isabelle says:

I voted for Bernie and in no way will sit out this election. Its the butt hurt Bernie bros that are angry about Hilary but it isn’t the majority of Bernie voters.

    • Tate says:

I voted for Bernie in the primary as did my husband, siblings, in laws, friends…. We will all show up to vote for Hillary in November. Trump becoming President is not an option.

    • Kath says:

Thank you! The rest of the world thanks you!!

I liked Bernie too – but I hope people can suck it up and vote for the least objectionable candidate. While my fantasy candidates would be Elizabeth Warren and Bernie – that’s just not going to happen.

Hillary may not be perfect, but she is at least SANE and won’t wreck the global economy and start a war on immigrants, women and minorities.

The world needs stability now, and a power-drunk proto-fascist with delusions of grandeur is not the one to provide it.

I don’t think many Americans understand just how directly their choice of president affects the rest of the world. A lot of Republicans tell non-Americans to ‘mind their own business’ – but we’re often the ones who have to deal with the fall out (see: refugee crisis in Europe).

With Russia’s increasing nationalism and China’s territorial ambitions – we’re at a very dangerous crossroads.

So, my lovely American pals – PLEASE get out and vote for the only sane person on the ticket!

  27. Jess says:

The best point Jon made in that awesome rant is which side is actually being divisive – not the side saying everyone deserves a seat at the table, the side saying you can’t eat at my table (cough, RNC, cough, Trump).

  28. Ann says:

Not only is Benghazi NOT propaganda – but voting for Trump ensures us he will be everything that hiLIARy is NOT. And that is a GOOD thing. With Donald, it’s true, we can’t relate to his past as a politician because he hasn’t been one before, but with hiLIARy we KNOW what her experience is in government and it’s been a failure. Disappointment. Dangerous. Corrupt. It’s fact. It’s all out there for those who look for it. I’d rather go with a true chance at hope and change, with Trump, than the same ole Clinton crap. More years of BO. Who have the clinton/obama’s helped? Poverty is growing. Government dependency is growing. Equal pay for women still doesn’t comply … not even in the White House. Law and order is down the tubes. What have they done?

    • Jwoolman says:

Ann – you’re just repeating what Donald Trump has told you. Please check other sources. For instance, law and order are not down the tubes. Look at real crime statistics – there has been a steady decrease, not increase. Trump is just scaring you needlessly. He either never bothered to check things out himself or is outright lying to get your vote. Neither option is good for a potential President.
