Ben Affleck surprises fans at Comic-Con, shows new ‘Justice League’ footage

Ben Affleck was a surprise addition to the Warner Brothers panel at Comic-Con, which featured footage from the Wonder Woman movie, Fantastic Beasts and Kong: Skull Island (which Kaiser and Hecate are covering separately). They also showed new Justice League footage which included Ben as Bruce Wayne and briefly as Batman and a very gorgeous Jason Momoa as Aquaman (Popsugar compiled all the shots of Momoa in the trailer, you’re welcome). We also see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Ezra Miller as Flash. That scene made me laugh out loud. Miller looks familiar to me and it’s because I know him from Trainwreck! He played the jailbait intern whom Amy Schumer’s character punched in the face. (He was also in We Need to Talk about Kevin and Perks of Being a Wallflower.) I’m sure we’ll see much more of him, he has a real presence. We also get to see the new Cyborg, played by relative newcomer Ray Fisher. Here’s the video:

That was really good, right? It was clever and funny and looks like it’s going to be a blast. Like Batman v. Superman, this was also directed by Zach Snyder but it has at least one new writer involved and the writers are credited in a different order. What I’m saying is this looks better than BvS and I believe they they learned some lessons from that and made this one lighter. Justice League is out in November of next year and they’re still filming it.

We didn’t get to see Superman in the trailer but Henry Cavill was at Comic-Con, along with all the other stars. USA Today reports that Affleck took a photo of the 6,500 fans in attendance and said “This is kind of nerdy, but this is a big deal in my life. This is never going to happen again.” Conan O’Brien, who was moderating, joked “I think this may happen for you again.” He’s right, there are so many more DC movies coming out, including Justice League 2 and Affleck’s standalone Batman film. Affleck also said that Batman “is one of the most iconic characters of contemporary [times].. I’m deeply honored and thrilled to get a chance to do [the Batman film]. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.” That’s nice, he sounds sober too.

Here’s the first part of the panel. Jason Momoa wore a giant hat, Ray Fisher had on a “Borg Life” t-shirt and Ezra Miller was Gandalf but with a Flash baseball cap!

Again DC learned from the critiques so good. I fell asleep during BvS twice before I made it through the entire movie.

Ben is such a nerd it’s why I felt bad for him during the #SadAffleck news lol

  2. INeedANap says:

Man oh man, few things irk me more than seeing industry events where the woman is wearing a dress, heels, and a full face of makeup, while the guys show up in jeans and tshirts. I realize the dudes likely spent as much on their outfits as Gal Gadot did on hers, but they look like immature bros while she looks like a gorgeously turned-out professional.

Batfleck needs to step away from the booze and Botox.

Can you tell this Monday morning is not treating me well? 😉

    • Jane says:

@INeedANap- LOVE the Batfleck reference. He just needs to go away, period. He is certainly NOT the person I want to see first thing on Monday morning. However, give me Jason Momoa any day….

      • kimbers says:

Ben looks lie what i imagine a middle aged dude who takes HGH would. Kinda sad looking from so much cosmetic fixing. He reminds me of a sad aging LA woman.

    • Lisa says:

Batfleck looks like Matthew Perry on a bender

    • Ellie says:

They are correctly dressed for comic con. She is overdressed.

      • ashl says:

False. She is the star of a movie that Warner Bros. is banking on in a major way. She is also the first female superhero to get her own film in forever. She has to look A++++. She can’t show up in a friggin’ t-shirt or a costume. Same with Brie Larson.

      • Annetommy says:

Her top looks really low cut for this event, no harm in a bit of cleavaciousness but woah…and I still can’t dislike Ben.

    • Persephone says:

Is there such a thing as inappropriately dresses for ComicCon.
It almost looks like they’ve dresses how their characters would have dresses, especially Miller.

  3. Mira says:

Gal looks gorgeous! I am more interested in Jason Momoa than Batfleck or his boring sidekick Cavill.

  4. Pepper says:

Someone needs to tell Ben that holding his arms away from his body like his biceps are just that huge makes him look like a giant tool, and the excessive fillers aren’t helping matters either.

The trailer looks like a typical Snyder trailer, good on the surface but if you look past the flashiness you can see the cracks. Snyder’s not good at balancing multiple characters across a film, so I’m not holding out hope for this one. I still wish George Miller had got his JS film off the ground instead.

  5. Bishg says:

Ezra Miller is astonishingly beautiful, and so is Gal.
This is all I have to say.

    • QQ says:

He really really has a Beautiful face ( I keep hearing he is super unpleasant and difficult with press) also I find it kinda sad/curious that he seems into “Butch It Up” for the DC crowd cause Ezra was def. presenting way more androgynous and fluid up to the presser for that BvsS movie

      • I Choose Me says:

I think he’s out isn’t he? Never heard about him being difficult per se but he does strike me as the type of person who’s sometimes moody and deeply cynical. Whatever, he IS beautiful and a great actor. His role in We Need to Talk About Kevin haunted me for days.

  6. cyn says:

I loved that Henry Cavill crashed the Suicide Squad panel and pranked Will Smith. The Justice League trailer looked awesome. I love Ezra. My daughter freaked out because Perks of Being a Wallflower is her favorite movie.

  7. cyn says:

Also, this may be the first year that DC outshone Marvel.

    • amunet ma'at says:

Right! I’m pumped. I grew up a Batman & Wonder Woman fan. The only Marvel characters I liked growing up were the X-men. I enjoy the Marvel movie train but I am so glad that DC got it together. Now I can geek out. And they casted my bae as Aquaman. Looks like I will get Black Panther and Aquaman in the same year. How did I get so lucky?

  8. Bridget says:

Another day, another leather jacket for Ben. At least this one wasn’t some hideous color?

  9. Karen says:

DC has learned to cut good trailers: only show build up, a couple of jokes, flashes of fighting, and put good rock song behind them. It’s directed by Zach S. I’m not confident.

  10. lee says:

How is it a surprise appearance when he flat-out said a few weeks ago that he’d be there?

  11. Georgia says:

Jason Momoa in that trailer is EVERYTHING! I would have never believed I’d be saying this, but I’m really looking forward to the Aquaman film.

    • dj says:

Jason Momoa as Aquaman is so delicious. He is everything in this trailer! Ezra Miller is beautiful. I cannot look away when he is onscreen. But I really, really hate to see Affleck in anything anymore. Not hate…just not love.

  12. Miss M says:

I think Ezra is fine, but Grant Gustin will always be Barry Allen to me.

    • Aj says:

THANK YOU for saying that!! 😊 Yeah, Grant Gustin is soo good as Barry Allen!!

      • Miss M says:

Grant really got the Barry’s personality right!
Unlike Marvel, DC never quite gets the casting well. They usually get it right for the tv shows… For instance, anyone can play Superman better than Cavill. Tom Welling was superb as The man of steel!

      • Aj says:

        Dear Miss M…
You are absolutely right with everything you said!! I have nothing against Ezra or Henry, BUT they will never be, as good as Grant Gustin or Tom Welling!! And that is the truth!!

  13. KHLBHL says:

Anyone…uh…not enthusiastic about the Justice League footage? If I say this anywhere else on the Internet, I will get attacked. But here….maybe some like minds?

I think the humor is too forced and it really looks like DC is over-correcting and trying to capture more of Marvel’s tone, which is difficult to do when you don’t have that established universe. The problem with BvS was tonality, but that was not the major or only problem.

I said this in a different post, but I’ll say it again. IMO, the only saving grace was Jason Momoa. I think they should just digitally replicate him and make the Justice League comprised of seven Aquamans….Aquamen? And then keep him shirtless for the entire movie.

I dunno, I think even the comic book bros would love it.

    • HH says:

Well given that it’s still a little over a year until the movie comes out, I’m hoping they work on some things. I think the humor feels forced because it’s SUCH a contrast with BvS. The Flash is naturally more lighthearted, so it was always a given he would inject some humor into the film. And given that he scenes between he and Affleck were the main parts of this footage, that’s probably why it seems more humorous. What really irked me wore the costumes for The Flash and Cyborg…eeeeehhhhh. Not feeling it.

    • Krysten says:

I said the same thing. I was watching the trailer thinking really? This is what all the fuss is about? My husband heard the trailer and said what are you watching because it sounds terrible!

  14. Lucy says:

I like Grant Gustin a great deal, and have liked him ever since I saw him in Glee, but I really cannot wait to see Ezra as The Flash. He’s an incredible actor and this is so different from everything he has done so far, so this is exciting!! And yes, this trailer already looks like an upgrade from BvS.

  15. ashl says:

So odd when everyone else on stage is so enthusiastic and obviously excited to be there, and then there’s Ben. Wet blanket Ben. Didn’t he earn $43mil last year most of which came from Warner Bros to be Batman? Can’t he at least PRETEND to want to be there? Isn’t he supposed to be an actor? God he annoys me. Cheer the eff up or stay the eff away. There are about a million actors who would love to be in his position and he acts so ungrateful and miserable all the time. He SUCKS.

  16. V4Real says:

Can’t wait for this movie. That’s all I got

  17. Kristen says:

If you only know Ezra Miller from Trainwreck, you really should see some of his other films. Idk how JL will turn out, but he’s really a pretty incredible actor.

  18. Thaisajs says:

Do we think its notable that Superman wasn’t a part of that trailer? I know its not an official trailer, but it seems a bit weird they wouldn’t include him in it. Unless Cavill is just as wooden in this film as he’s been in the others.

    • cyn says:

Um…Superman is dead. That’s the reason why he wasn’t in the trailer. I doubt that he will be in any of the trailers. I think he won’t be in the movie until the final fight scene as a shocker which is stupid because everyone knows that he is filming and they put him on the dang poster.

  19. mire usted! says:

Putting aside the atrocious critical response to Batman v Superman, the Snyder/Affleck collaboration under performed comparatively with Nolan/Bale collaboration (which generated OVER a billion dollars for 2 out of its 3 films yet the Snyder/Affleck collaboration failed to generate a billion dollars ) at the box office. So what does WB do? Put out ANOTHER Snyder/Affleck collaboration with yet another one on the way. Fascinating business decision.

I can’t wait to see Black Panther! If Ryan Coogler can breathe life into Rocky, I can’t wait to see him breathe life into the Black Panther series. Chadwick Boseman – Yes! Michael B. Jordan and Lupita too!

    • cyn says:

IMHO Snyder is what’s wrong with MOS and BVS. Why do they keep letting him write and direct?

  20. Abby_J says:

They made Aquaman interesting, I didn’t want to punch Batfleck in the face, and I REALLY like Wonder Woman. Didn’t get to see much Cyborg, and maybe their Flash will grow on me, but I love CW’s Flash a LOT.

Second most excited I’ve been about a DC movie in quite a while (First being Suicide Squad. I don’t care if it is a trainwreck, I am gonna love it). I have no doubt though, that Zach Snyder will find a way to ruin it. Ugh. Why are they letting him anywhere NEAR this?

Oh, and props to DC if the rumors are true that Kiersey Clemons will play Iris West in the Flash. I don’t know anything about her, personally, but I’m happy that they are following CW’s lead and making her a POC.

  21. JoJo says:

Ezra. Ezra. Ezra. I first saw him in We Need to Talk about Kevin and was completely blown away. Amazing talent and incredible charisma/presence. I went back and watched any movie I could with him in it. City island, Every Day, Another Happy Day, etc. All smaller movies, but he steals every scene he’s in. He’s one of those rare actors where I’ll watch a bad movie just to see his performance. Stanford Prison Experiment is another one – true story, ok movie, awesome Ezra performance.

  22. Danielle says:

Why does bat fleck talk in that weird gravelly voice? It’s distracting.
