Charlie Hunnam is a blokey Jon Snow in the first ‘King Arthur’ trailer: ‘GoT’ lite?

Do you guys like Game of Thrones? If you like Game of Thrones, you’re going to maybe like Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur. That’s what the studio is hoping, at least. Charlie Hunnam came out to San Diego this weekend to do some promotion for King Arthur. This film was originally supposed to come out this summer, but with Ritchie’s custody drama with Madonna and the studio not really believing in the film, it got pushed back to a February 2017 release. Many believe January and February releases are the graveyards of film, although there’s always a chance that people will be in the mood for some GoT-ish in February, especially since the seventh season of Game of Thrones is being delayed in 2017.

I’m not joking about the Game of Thrones thing either. This thing looks like Game of Thrones (perhaps with a bigger budget), and Guy Ritchie even cast two GoT actors in prominent roles: Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger!) and Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton). They are featured prominently in the trailer. Charlie Hunnam is also shirtless and showing off his Medieval Crossfit body, so… I mean, at least there’s eye candy? This film is already being criticized for being a total sausage party, although it does feature some women: Annabelle Wallis and Katie McGrath.

There are Children of the Forest and Hunnam’s Arthur is like a more blokey Jon Snow. I guess Jude Law is playing the bad guy, sort of like Joffrey combined with Melisandre. And instead of dragons, there’s a giant monster with tusks. Eh. I think I understand why no one really knew what to do with this film: how do you really market it? Historial/fantasy/sci-fi? What part do you emphasize? And now we know Guy Ritchie is an enormous Game of Thrones fan. While Ritchie has high hopes that this will turn into a franchise, I’m not so sure. It looks kind of messy to me.

I actually think it looks super fun! Love Guy Ritchie movies, everyone in the cast and yes, as a huge GoT fan I’m feeling the vibe.

    • kennedy says:

I love Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Hunnam’s hump, Charlie Hunnam’s bare torso, Charlie Hunnam’s other bits and pieces… so, this movie was pretty much made for me!

    • Camille says:

I think this movie looks like messy fun and I’d watch this over anything starring Tiddles or Cumbersnatch any day of the week. Plus bonus hottie CH.

  2. Betsy says:

I don’t watch GoT because I don’t like violence. So if this is graphically violent… pass.

    • Froggy says:

I thought hubby and I were the only ppl on earth who didn’t watch GoT.

      • Betsy says:

Nope. There are at least three of us. 🙂 Four when you count my husband!

      • Dlo says:

Never seen it either. That’s 6 counting my ss

      • amunet ma'at says:

You can add 2 more to the party. I tried to watch the season 1 finale, but when Drago died, I was like, “eh, no longer care”. My hubby doesn’t watch and has not idea what this stuff is.

    • Emily says:

I tried reading the books and watching the show. Neither was my cup of tea.

  3. manda says:

I thought it looked good. A nod to the fact that king Arthur stories took place during or close in time to roman occupation, and I think I saw the lady of the lake. I’ll def check it out

    • amunet ma'at says:

I am hoping for Morgana and Lady of the Lake. Those two are my favorite part of the Arthurian legend, next to Merlin.

  4. kiki says:

I think this is going to be a good film. Can I ask, what is Guy Richie’s style technique for directing?

  5. Marty says:

I see why they originally wanted this to come out in this summer. It looks like a fun popcorn movie. No really sure how it will play in February though.

Charlie looked hot and I’m just happy he didn’t give any more 50 Shades of Beige quotes this time.

  6. FingerBinger says:

All Guy Ritchie films are sausage parties.

  7. Jenns says:

I’m so glad you pointed out the Children of the Forrest, because I thought the same thing. This looks like a total GOT clone. Not that it’s a bad thing, because I’ll get to hear Roose Bolton’s voice again.

Honestly, it looks terrible. But Charlie looks hot AF.

  8. INeedANap says:

I feel like I’ve seen this movie a hundred times before. Add it to the pile.

  9. Sassback says:

I think it’s pretty funny y’all are calling King Arthur ‘Game of Throne lite’, when King Arthur is basically the original GoT. And aside from that, it pretty much looks typical movie of this ilk-Clive Owen did a King Arthur movie awhile back with similar moody lighting.

    • FingerBinger says:

This. King Arthur has everything game of thrones has. Incest ,murder magic and war. Dragons are what’s missing. Were there dragons in Arthurian legend?

      • Cirien says:

Well if you count the vision of the red and white dragon fighting that Merlin had then sure?

  10. Moxie Remon says:

Charlie looks like a dad with this outfit. He’s either very Jesse Pinkman or he’s Walt, no middle ground. But, I mean, Charlie can’t do no wrong.

  11. LinaLamont says:

Never liked blonds, but, I find him so funny and attractive–weird accent and all.
    That’s it.

    • Lucky says:

Was just about to say the same thing, not a fan of blonde guys but he’s hot! I love his accent. I won’t go to the theater to see this but will check it out on Netflix

  12. OhDear says:

This movie looks like it’s either going to be funny or a hot mess. Either way, I’ll check it out when it’s on streaming (movies are too damn expensive in theaters these days).

  13. Miss M says:

When I eas ready to ditch my crush for him…

  14. Cee says:

Ha, I love Guy films because they’re cheeky and ridiculous. I’m looking forward to this even though King Arthur has already been done a million times.

  15. Jade says:

Of course it’s a sausage party, it’s set in medieval times which typically wasn’t a great time for women in history.

  16. Pants says:

I don’t even care what this movie is about. I love Charlie Hunnam and I’ll be at the theater to see this.

  17. Tiny Martian says:

I am a sucker for King Arthur, so will definitely be seeing this!

Plus, Eric Bana is my secret heart throb, so there is that. And shirtless Charlie? Yes, please!. Throw in an evil Jude Law? Sounds like movie heaven to me! 🙂

    • Aussie girl says:

Love all things Arthur too, plus CH so I’m going to push on and see it and irgnore the GR factor. It’s not that I don’t hate his movies it’s just that I never really enjoy them ( for some f@&k reason I love swept away 😔 Shame face, it’s on my go to comfort B grade movie list). This doesn’t seem like something he would do. It felt lord of the rings/GOT to me. I hope it’s shot for CH sake because I want to see him happen and to justify dropping 50 shades

    • Mika says:

I will fight you for Eric Bana. He’s hot. Also, David Beckham is also in this movie. A lot of people don’t realise that Idris Elba was supposed to be in this as a Black knight but was allegedly written out due to racist people stating that black men wouldn’t have been a knight in those times. I think they lost a good portion of a fan base there. I went to see Thor just to see Idris, not Hemsworth.

  18. sun says:

    this looks so dumb

  19. Georgia says:

    Honks for Charlie!

Btw, I’m still waiting to see him in a good film. I will not hold my breath. Probably the only good career move he’s made post SOA was running the hell away from 5o shades

    • Anname says:

Lost City of Z, directed by James Gray, is likely to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Charlie plays Percy Fawcett, the real- life explorer who inspired Indiana Jones. So maybe a good one coming soon?

    • kennedy says:

Have you forgotten about Children of Men, arguably one of the greatest films ever made? Sure he’s not the main attraction (he’s not even one of the many second-leads) but he has a pretty prominent role and he absolutely eats it up. I really hope he reunites with Cuaron for another film. I also really enjoyed Crimson Peak – he was great in that movie and I love that he has a great mentor in Del Toro! Plus, Lost City of Z should be special. James Gray is one of my favorite filmmakers and even his lesser films are splendid.

  20. Don't kill me I'm French says:

I almost hate as the Guy Ritchie movies as I hate the Zack Snyder movies

  21. Mia4s says:

Oh dear, this has bomb written all over it. Looks terrible. And I say this as someone who really liked Man from UNCLE.

Scuttlebutt around film blogs was that the delays are partially due to that this film did not do “reshoots” so much as reshot the whole movie! Yikes.

    • kennedy says:

I really liked Man from UNCLE as well. I thought Alicia Vikander was superb and the entire tone of the film was excellent. Sad that it was considered a bomb for WB.

  22. QQ says:

This looks like a hot mess and a Cockney accented Sausage Fest… ten out of ten will be watching

  23. detritus says:

I usually get my hot anachronistic man fix from Vikings.
Although they are PG and there is never enough hot person nudity.

So maybe this is it? Hunnam and Fimmel do look really similar…

  24. Stacy says:

Someone on this site or another one pretty much called it GoT:Jax Teller edition. Or I guess what Jax would be like on GoT.

  25. Chanteloup says:

Damn, I wish I could clone me some Charlie!

  26. Helen says:

I really don’t see the GoT comparisons. Is it because it is set in medieval times? Is anything medieval then considered a GoT ripoff? Seems strange to credit one show with all creative efforts set in a similar historical setting.

  27. HK9 says:

It looks like GoT + RocknRolla to me.

  28. Snotface says:

I’ll be watching this. I’m a fan of King Arthur stories, Charlie Hunnam, Eric Bana, non-comic book movies, and Roose Bolton’s sexy voice, so–win!

Sadly, I don’t think it’ll do well in a February spot. This is definitely a summer movie. I know Clive Owen’s King Arthur tanked in the summer, but this one is way more action oriented and seemed perfect for a summer release.

    Oh well.

  29. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I am sick and tired of movies with washed-out colors. You know what helped to make John Boorman’s “Excalibur” so great and memorable? The movie was BEAUTIFUL. Ritchie’s version looks dull, forgettable, and inartistic. Plus, the choice of music for the trailer does not bode well. I will pass.

  30. Browniecakes says:

Josh Horowitz has a terrific interview with Charlie on MTV FB. Apparently Guy Ritchie didn’t even want to see him. Charlie is very likeable

  31. Mia4s says:

Annnd now it is being reported that Charlie is definitely out of Pacific Rim 2. Not a surprise, I cannot imagine that the studio wanted to pay his sequel option given that the first movie was a disappointment. So now it will star John Boyega (sweet!) and…Scott Eastwood (nevermind!).

  32. Tris says:

He is DREAMY! I miss SoA.
