Zayn Malik on Gigi Hadid: ‘she’s super intelligent & we do the same type of job’

Zayn Malik is one of four “rebels” chosen to cover Elle UK’s September issue, along with Kristen Stewart, Amandla Stenberg and Hari Nef. You can see the other covers here. Elle created both a black and white and a color cover (below) for him. It’s a nice cover, albeit not too exciting. His eyes though *swoons*. Zayn is still promoting his Mind of Mine album and his solo career. In the bit that Elle released of the interview, he discusses music, Mom and marriage… no, not really. He speaks lovingly of Gigi Hadid but doesn’t mention marriage, I just needed the alliteration. After his flippant Glamour interview, it’s nice to see a little more depth to Zayn.

On his solo career and love of music: ‘My entire life has changed in the last year. I’m still taking it all in. I’ve found so much out about myself. Mostly how in love with music I still was. The album is a build up of six years and never being able to express what I wanted to say. I had something to get off my chest.’

On his relationship with his mum and sisters: ‘I enjoyed the womanly influence. I have a lot of respect for women because of them. They are so strong, powerful and do everything themselves…’

On his decision to leave One Direction: ‘At that time in my life I felt I had done everything I could do there and I just needed to change it up. It didn’t feel brave. I just don’t have it in me to feel fully secure in anything I do. I always strive towards something better. It’s why I think sometimes I come across the wrong way, a bit distant. I’m just stressed out trying to control how I’m perceived. I think about things a lot.’

On his relationship with model Gigi Hadid: ‘She’s super intelligent, I think that’s why it works so well. And we do the same type of job so we get that with each other.’

On the negatives of social media: ‘As much as social networking is a big thing now, there’s something to be said about having something real, if I had a choice I would take the camera off everyone’s iPhone and make sure we didn’t have Twitter or Facebook. It affects art form. There’s something to be said about living in the moment. I try to keep my phone for calls.’

Is anyone else a little bummed it wasn’t actually an alien that told him to leave 1D? As for Gigi’s being smart, I have no idea if that’s true or not. What I am curious about is why he thinks that makes them work – because they are intellectually matched? Or is is a yin/yang thing? Since Zayn struggles with anxiety, I am glad he has a strong support unit of his mom, sisters and Gigi – especially when he does actually go out on tour.

Many of my friends have the same opinion as Zayn about social media but they still don’t put their phones down. I don’t check my phone in public unless I am alone. However, something recently came up with a contract that forced me to check my phone periodically while I was having lunch out with my family. My only other choice would have been not to go. From now on, if I don’t want people in my party using their phones when we are together, I’ll ask them not to. But I’m going to stop worrying about what the people at the other table are doing unless they interrupt my meal. Since Zayn has active Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram accounts, he may want to rethink his stance on eliminating social media.

He’s very sexy but LORT he’s tiny!

  2. Lucy says:

Let me correct that: “She’s super intelligent and we’re under the same contract”. Also, his beauty is not enough to make up for his personality.

    • Bluebelle says:

I disagree, I think he’s one of God’s most beautiful creations. He’s more beautiful than Gigi even. But I agree with the personality thing, I can’t figure him out and what I do know about him doesn’t make my inner fan girl sparkle.

    • Bethany says:

You have a problem with his personality? He’s charming and a bit shy. What’s the problem. Anyway, I think he is extraordinarily gorgeous. Perfect!

      • Lucy says:

I do, actually. He may be shy and charming and gorgeous, sure, but I also think he’s arrogant and has an attitude problem, not to mention he’s a well-known cheater. And @Bluebelle, yeah, that’s what I was referring to, now I see I didn’t express it properly. What I meant to say is that, no matter how breathtaking he is (and he is), I still cannot give him a pass for his personality.

  3. snusnud says:

Him saying Gigi is so smart is just like Emily Ratajkowski trying to convince us in that interview a while ago that she wanted to be a brain surgeon or smth.

    • SKF says:

Actually a friend of mine did some work with Emily and she said she’s very quiet and bookish and very bright. And quite a few people have commented on Gigi’s brains too. Maybe they’re not bright by high academic standards, but they’re still bright and certainly not stupid. Both were pushed into modelling etc young by their parents.

  4. jeanpierre says:

He sure doesn’t look super intelligent with the mouthbreathing.

    • Somegirl says:

I don’t know why people always have to make nasty comments about mouth breathing. I have breathing issues and struggle to breathe or get enough air through my nose, so ya, I breathe through my mouth. Who the heck cares what orifice another person breathes through, as long as they get enough air?! It says a lot more about you than it does him.

  5. Nicole says:

    Yea ok sir.
You don’t like social media cause you regularly tweet dumb stuff like all lives matter
and respecting women? Ummmm you cheated on your fiance. try again
and I doubt Gigi is smart but sure

    • Locke Lamora says:

Is tweeting #AllLives Matter different when tweeted by minorities like Zayn? I realise why most people use #AllLivesMatter, and it’s such a shame, but maybe it’s different when tweeted by Fox News and different when tweeted by a brown Muslim?

      • ??? says:

Zayn, who heavily appropriates black culture and uses the n word, does not get a pass to tweet All Lives Matter. Yes, all lives do matter, but the point is that black people are the ones getting killed by police brutality, so this is who we need to stand in solidarity with. He should be one of the first celebrities in line to support the movement, along with all of the other ones who benefit from black culture and never credit it. By all means, he should also shed light on Islamophobia, but not like that.

      • Nicole says:

nope still is a way to take away from the movement and Zayn’s an idiot so I wasn’t surprised

      • Aliyah says:

Zayn wasn’t the one that said the n word. It was Ned (his A&R person I believe). The video proves that Zayn didn’t utter the word and I don’t think he would. I haven’t seen evidence of Zayn appropriating black culture. If you’re talking about his music, his genre is R&B. His genre of music is in the same category as Miguel, Usher, etc. He’s always talking about the influence of Black artists in his life. He has so much respect for black artists. His audition into the x factors was a CB song. As for the tweet, I do feel that the tweet itself was ignorant. Not malicious but definitely a tweet that shows the limit of the person’s understanding of current events. I won’t bother to defend that tweet but Zayn is a good person. I hope he gets the chance to clear up this understanding because I know Zayn would never intentionally hurt or disrespect anyone.

      • Leen says:

I think it’s a bit different when you have a Pakistani-British Muslim tweeting it than your white american bro you know? Considering the fact that police brutality in the UK IS a problem too (not on the scale of the US)..

  6. Margo S. says:

He is a very good looking man.

  7. Ayra. says:

    *blinks* Nope Zayn, sorry.
But on a somewhat related note, I saw that his album didn’t have great sales. (A 90% drop in his second week?)

    • Nicole says:

Yea the album was super hyped and Pillowtalk is his only hit single and the buzz around it completely died out in a few weeks

  8. mytake says:

She did get into NYU before she was famous, so, she probably is pretty smart.

    • me says:

NYU offered her a volleyball scholarship or something. She ended up dropping out to pursue modelling.

    • Little Darling says:

NYU will accept any celebrity child. Not saying without merit, but it’s pretty common and doesn’t necessarily mean booksmart.

However, I don’t think Gigi is a dumb girl at all.

  9. QQ says:

FAM! *stank face* how can one boy/man be so SO Pretty???! Idont get it , on top of that he kinda has the talent too ( Don’t fight me on this Mind of Mine sh*tty Chonga spelling aside is Absolutely undeniable)

  10. Umm says:

Nice to hear that Bradford accent 🙂

  11. Sarah says:

Gigi went to the New School in NYC, not NYU, before she dropped out. I remember this from watching Real Housewives. Not to say she is or isn’t smart, but she didn’t get in to NYU.

I have mixed feelings on Zayn. His album was ok but a lot of the songs sounded like other artists to me (PillowTalk/the Weeknd, Drunk/Usher; Frank Ocean and John Legend influences too), for all his talk about wanting to something original, I expected more. That said, I do like his song on the Ghostbusters soundtrack.

  12. Erica_V says:

    Sure Jan.

  13. J.Mo says:

I’m sure Gigi is smart and savvy, especially career-wise since she’s so successful. I just don’t think he’s a good judge of intelligence.
