RuPaul: ‘What do I think of Hillary? I think she’s f–king awesome.’

If I could, I would cover RuPaul interviews every week. It’s not that I’m a crazy RuPaul super-fan, but I just love his interviews SO much. The only reason I don’t cover RuPaul’s interviews all the time is because people don’t think to interview him all that much. Either that, or RuPaul just doesn’t do the media promotional tour like other stars. He’s not chatting with The Hollywood Reporter or Variety. He’s not giving an exclusive to People Mag. I covered his interview with New York Mag back in March, and it was SO good. And now he’s chatting with NY Mag again, this time following the first-ever Emmy nomination for RuPaul’s Drag Race. You can read the full piece here, which I would recommend because everything that comes out of his mouth is glorious. Some highlights:

His reaction to getting his first Emmy nom: “Well, my agents called me up and told us that we had been nominated, and my first thought was I was happy for Logo getting that kind of recognition. Logo is a corporation. The industry, which is a corporation, recognizing another corporation is good for business. It’s great. But, like I said before, I’ve lived my life and worked my career outside of the system, off the grid, so for me to start being inspired by what other people think of me is not what I’m about.”

The Emmys are junior high school:
“You know, in ninth grade, I won best dancer and best Afro. And I indeed had the best Afro and was the best dancer, but that’s not what got me the award. What got me the award was I was hanging out with all the right people, and life doesn’t change much when you leave junior high school. It’s the same.”

A spectacular George Clooney reference: “Well, I know that probably having me on the ballot reflects what’s happening with the times. You see certain actors who have been bachelors their whole lives — real f–k machines. By the time they’re 50, they have to settle down, marry someone, and have a child because, if they don’t, they’ll be portrayed in the press as being an old latch, or a creepy old guy who’s preying on young poon. So it’s an image thing. It’s like politics. There’s a certain way you can play the public to where they don’t catch on to your ways.”

Trump & the lowest common denominator: “The truth is, you look at the selection, you see what people are doing, and you see, Okay, the subconscious mind, it’s still going for the lowest common denominator. Yes, Trump is this weirdo and he’s creepy, but the saddest, most worrisome part of this is that there are millions and millions of people who are devotees! What I’m trying to say is that people put on this face because it makes them look good, but underneath lurking in the subconscious is this other face that you’re thinking, Ooh, that’s f–king gross! And most people act from that subconscious, gross place.”

What he thinks of Hillary Clinton & the Democrats: “I f–king love them. I have always loved them. And let me just say this: If you’re a politician — not just in Washington but in business and industry, you have to be a politician — there are a lot of things that you have to do that you’re not proud of. There are a lot of compromises you have to make because it means that you can get this other thing over here. And if you think that you can go to f–king Washington and be rainbows and butterflies the whole time, you’re living in a f–king fantasy world. So now, having said that, think about what a female has to do with that: All of those compromises, all of that sh-t, double it by ten. And you get to understand who this woman is and how powerful, persuasive, brilliant, and resilient she is. Any female executive, anybody who has been put to the side — women, blacks, gays — for them to succeed in a white-male-dominated culture is an act of brilliance. Of resilience, of grit, of everything you can imagine. So, what do I think of Hillary? I think she’s f–king awesome. Is she in bed with Wall Street? Goddammit, I should hope so! You’ve got to dance with the devil. So which of the horrible people do you want? That’s more of the question. Do you want a pompous braggart who doesn’t know anything about diplomacy? Or do you want a badass bitch who knows how to get sh-t done? That’s really the question.

[From Vulture]

RuPaul also has a surprisingly philosophical take on what’s happening between Donald Trump, his supporters and the structure of the GOP, and how “there are people who are rejecting the forward motion of mankind. And they don’t want to be present for what’s happening because they don’t want to change.” It’s really profound, no joke. He also talks about the tragedy at Pulse in Orlando and that moved me to tears. But what he said about Hillary being an outsider to the system and succeeding in a male-dominated society… damn. RuPaul is the best.

Love him, and totally agree. It is extremely weird seeing him dressed as a guy though. It’s like he’s in drag!

“You’ve got to dance with the devil.” –RuPaul

There’s so much I could quote but that really jumped out at me. Also this: “Any female executive, anybody who has been put to the side — women, blacks, gays — for them to succeed in a white-male-dominated culture is an act of brilliance. ” +1000

“You’re born naked and the rest is drag.”

He’s so amazing. I am a huge fan of Rupaul and Drag Race. I swear, he deserves that Emmy. It’s a typical reality show in some ways but it’s poignant and unique in the way it spotlights conversations about race, class, gender identity, privilege, queerness, sexuality, self acceptance, forgiveness, otherness, and empathy. Sociology professors could just play Rupaul’s Drag Race in class. It humanizes so many relevant issues and is somehow super powerful to watch these outsiders as they paint their contour and tell their stories. It’s like RuPaul wants you to watch their transformation and also raise a mirror to the audience by asking them to listen to these voices. It’s very philosophical at times, even though it’s silly and my husband makes fun of me.

The man is a treasure. Total love! And a goldmine of quotes. Thanks be to RuPaul. Amen.

    PREACH!!! He is brilliant!

  6. susanne says:

    I like “young poon.’
He is so articulate and wise, and hysterical. And that’s in print- I could read him all day! Is his show this good?

    • Esmom says:

I know, I laughed. He speaks the truth…but the sad thing is he will never be heard by Trump-bots because he represents the change they are fighting so hard against.

    • bettyrose says:

It’s a great line, but in all fairness, it could be about *anyone*. Sure the comment resembles Clooney, but maybe it was a prediction about Leo?

    • Justjj says:

I cannot recommend this show enough. It has its catty drama like all reality shows but RuPaul brings something else completely. He’s great. It’s the only show I’ve watched in the past 10 years that can make me laugh out loud hysterically and also make me cry, and make me feel self reflective and genuinely connected by the vulnerbilities that exist in all of us, no matter who we are.

  7. OTHER RENEE says:

This man is brilliant. I love reading his interviews. Re Trump, that’s exactly what I’ve been saying! Trump scares me but the fact that he has so many supporters scares me much more. He may be in melt down mode but a large percentage of the voting public still supports him. Omg what does that say about the people of this country?

    • QQ says:

me too, I don’t watch Drag Race cause I can’t ever find it ( so I probably don’t have Logo?) but his interviews are always a Great Delicious Read, he is a Deeply Pragmatic and Otherwise Lowkey guy, like lives in Montana with his guy and when he is working he is on!

You can log in at logo with certain other ISP logins. There are also some episodes on Hulu and Untucked is on Youtube. I watch the new seasons on Preject Free TV.

I love RuPaul. He’s above the system yet he will play it to his advantage.

    WORD.

  10. Sigh... says:

Agree or not, no word salad.
No “yes, but no, but yes…”
    No affect.
No carefully/poorly worded statements full of nothing.
So Ru clearly PAYS ATTENTION TO THE WORLD AROUND AND ACTUALLY THINKS BEFORE the interviews.
    So unicorn-rare in celebri-dom, yet so refreshing…

    RuPaul for President!

    Oh Ru.

  13. Bohemianmartini says:

Yes Mama Ru! I wish he had his own talk show (again). Fingers crossed he wins the Emmy! RPDR for life!

  14. Neelyo says:

One of the best reality shows around and it’s been so for years. It’s about time it finally receives some acknowledgement.

  15. ela says:

The Clinton campaign need to get him out on the campaign trail, pronto.

  16. Gina says:

Genius! So smart and on the money. I love a realist.

  17. Insomniac says:

That was awesome. He nailed it.

  18. Jayna says:

I think this is the best interview I’vs ever read. There was so much intelligence , insight, honesty, and common sense in his answers and zero pretentiousness. What a rarity.

And all of a sudden I swelled up with such pride for Hillary and how tough she is but shows a lot of grace.

The underbelly of the Republicans depresses me, which has come out of the shadows in their love of Trump’s hateful word-salad rhetoric at rallies. They’ve become an even more intolerant party.

    • Original T.C. says:

I have been saying what Ru explained about Hillary (not as brilliantly) to my Bernie or Burst friends for months but they refused to let go of the unicorns and rainbows. Cutting and pasting interview to email 🙂 That’s reality and I have been proud of Hillary Clinton’s badass resiliency for years. She gets things done, that is why most people struggling from paycheck to paycheck were voting for her over Bernie. Bernie voters had jobs or parents who were paying for their living, insurance etc. They were in general Occupy Wallstreet protesters.

Same with Trump. A new survey from Gallup came out showing that most of his voters are not the White Americans who have lost jobs or whose jobs have gone overseas. They are successfully employed in industries that cannot be outsourced. Nor are their jobs in danger of being taken over by immigrants, they live in more racially homogenous towns. They just have anxiety about the changing of the culture and fear for future generations of White Americans. The media has been doing a poor job of presenting an accurate profile of their concerns and background.

      • vauvert says:

Everyone, check out the new article in Mother Jones about another glaring conflict of interest for the orange buffoon. He leased a historic building in DC by submitting a ridiculous proposal that outbid other hotel chains in order to transform it into a Trump property… He has already been attempting to re-negotiate multiple details on the lease and – wait for it – IF (God forbid) he were to become the president, he would be his own lessor. Not only that, but having so many business interests (never mind how much they are worth) would require him to completely put them aside during his tenure in order to avoid any suggestion of impropriety.
Prior presidents have used blind trusts and other methods to insure that no one could doubt that they were acting in their own interest rather than in the country’s interests… guess what. Trump was only asked once in an interview what he planned to do about it if he won. His answer was classic Trump: I don’t know, I might do a blind trust. My kids would probably run the businesses. FTR, having a family member run your business while in office is NOT a blind trust. Read up on it, and also check out the new John Oliver video. He signed up to be a Trump election observer. It’s hilarious, scary and unbelievable.

And sorry to go so off topic here – I have been thinking what RuPail has articulated so well for ever. Hillary had to be ten times smarter, tougher and badass than the men surrounding her to make it. I don’t give a damn about her emails. The GOP has wasted millions investigating her to no avail. And the fact that some of her aides and the foundation staff are referring people for jobs is a snooze as far as I’m concerned. Doesn’t everyone do that? Whether it’s business or “modelling” careers for celeb kids – that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

  19. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Man knows what he’s talking about.

Sometimes I really feel bad for Hilary on a personality level. She, as a woman, gets shit leveled at her on every level.

If she talks too much about being a woman she’s trying to manipulate the female vote. If she doesn’t engage in touchy feely politics she’s cold and empty. If she raises her voice it’s used against her as a charge. If she tries to remain calm she’s accussed of being uncaring. All things that past presidents and current candidates have done and been praised for.

It just shows how many hoops and games women have to play just to remain in the competition without even getting into actual skill and work ethic. It boggles the mind people still ask, “Is she qualified?” while we have men with no political history at all running who everyone just readily accepts.

I don’t even know what kind of person I’d be on camera if I had to put up with that bull day in, day out, but it sure wouldn’t be a tenth of the control she has.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, she is pretty amazing. Most people would have thrown in the towel by now. And after so many decades she gets reduced to “Crooked Hillary” by the biggest buffoon the GOP has ever championed and people buy it, no questions asked. Makes my blood boil.

    • Tiffany says:

Yep, the whole is she qualified thing bothers me. Ummmm, read her resume. Check her references. Are you kidding me with that question.

      • JustCrimmles says:

@Tiffany why did I read your comment in Arianna Huffington’s voice? 😂

        More RuPaul any day.

      • Natalie says:

Are you keeeding me with that kwestchun?

Wait, am I doing Arianna Huffington or the Count from Sesame Street?

  20. Sadezilla says:

    Love RuPaul! Truth-telling, right here!

  21. mayamae says:

New campaign slogan – Hillary Clinton: Badass Bitch

  22. the_blonde_one says:

Rupaul is a seriously under-rated human being. He is truly a national treasure. We have so few national treasures. Basically, Dolly, Betty and Rupaul.

  23. elns says:

RuPaul sounds so smart in every interview. He also sounds very grounded and true to himself. I can’t appreciate him more in times like these.

  24. Flowerchild says:

Ru give me life!!! Like others have said above he knows exactly what he’s talking about and gives zero f*ck.

  25. Laura says:

Ru speaks the truth so simply and elegantly. Brilliant!

  26. Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

RuPaul. Keeping it 100. Love this man.

  27. Guesto says:

I love him anyway but this interview is just so uplifting: His zero tolerance for bullshit, his humanity, his wit, the cut-to-the-chase nature of his comments on and support for Hilary Clinton.

He’s such an all-round class act.

  28. Tiffany says:

I am just going to add a comment so more RuPaul stories come our way.

  29. CareBear says:

    Beyond impressed. Love you RuPaul!!!

  30. Koolkitty says:

For those interested, I highly recommend his podcast with Michelle Visage, called “What’s the Tea”. More of the same awesomeness!

  31. Betsy says:

I loved that endorsement of Hillary when I read it and I was hoping you’d feature it!

I love RuPaul, although his advice in one of his books to have regular colonics was off-putting. But I suppose he generally makes sense, so one pass. : )

  32. outoftheshadows says:

    MORE RUPAUL PLEASE!!!!

  33. stace says:

Rupaul is great, but one could argue that she won’t be as affected by the policy decisions of a potential candidate as say someone struggling to keep their middle-class job. I’m not pro-Trump, and I don’t hate Hillary, -it’s just that I’m concerned that she’s surrounded by sycophants and wonks who ultimately won’t defend, repair, and enhance aspects of our economy that will facilitate the growth of the middle class. Casting aside vitriolic labels like “bros”, I would have preferred a presidential candidate more like Warren and will spend the next four years figuring out how to help make that happen. Overall I find Rupaul’s assertion cynical.
I’m truly anxious about what seems to be a prevailing attitude of our political elites, which is that Joe and Sally middleclass should be happy to take it to the chin to advance an agenda of globalization. We need better candidates.

    • Original T.C. says:

Hillary Clinton is the only candidate running for office since the beginning who has realistic policies for both the lower and middle class jobs period. Everyone else from Bernie to Trump to Jill Steinbis selling flowery speeches. They either have no details or their plans will do nothing but explode our deficit. It’s just some people don’t take the time to read about her policies.

  34. Red says:

This man is a GOD and a QUEEN.

  35. NL says:

Was not expecting to love this interview so much. Brilliant all around.
