Since before Jaden Smith could talk, he knew no one would understand him

jaden1

Jaden Smith is in the new Netflix show The Get Down. Have you been watching it? I have not. It’s not that I’m not interested in seeing some of it, just to get a taste. It’s just that there’s so much other sh-t going on that I just haven’t seen it yet. In any case, to promote the show, Jaden did a “Young Hollywood” cover for Variety. And he talked about how he always knew he was going to be different, ever since he was a baby. Because babies remember. Babies are self-aware and they remember.

Jaden has always been an outsider: “I’ve always looked at life differently. I always knew no one was going to understand me — since before I could talk — and that’s why I was so quiet. I was very calm, very to myself. I could tell I felt about life differently than other kids; I could tell by the way they treated me.”

His style: “I’ve always been super-duper fly and super-duper different. People just start caring when they have a reason to start caring,” he says, and cites his style icons: Andy Warhol, the Joker, Poseidon, and Spike from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

His clothing line, MSFTSrep: When asked to elaborate on the collective, Smith says, “It’s pronounced ‘misfits.’ I took the ‘I’ out of ‘misfits’ because we’re a team and there is no ‘I’ in team. It’s a place for the lost kids and everyone to go, and something for them to have.” He says it’s created for “the girl that wants to be a tomboy or the boy that wants to wear a skirt, and people try to condemn. We’re here for you. Tell us your stories. If someone at your school’s trying to pick on you, it doesn’t matter because Jaden Smith’s got your back.”

Who does he credit for his strong sense of self? “My parents, of course. My parents told me that the world was harsh and that we had to be strong within ourselves.”

[From Variety]

“I always knew no one was going to understand me — since before I could talk — and that’s why I was so quiet.” In case you couldn’t tell, I’ve sort of done a 180 on Willow and Jaden. I used to think they were such annoying kids, but now I find them sort of daffy and charming. I mean, that quote is just Peak Jaden. He’s marching to the beat of his own drummer and it’s fine. Good for him. Of course, there’s a darker angle to that quote too – Scientologists have all of these theories about babies and what babies remember, so it could be that Jaden is just regurgitating some Scientology crap that he was taught (instead of going to a proper school).

The get down seems good, I will watch it.
I like Jaden and Willow. They are interesting, cool and beautiful.

    • Megan says:

Me, too. I think they are quite charming.

    • frank says:

      they’re awful

      • Beer&Crumpets says:

I’ll see your “awful” and raise you an “insufferable”. At least I can say that neither of them seem malicious, thats something. I do wish that kid would shut his mouth, though.

I mean that literally, btw. In just about every picture of him I’ve ever seen, he’s slack-jawed all to be damned.

  2. Karen says:

On that quote: He sounds like every teenager; no one gets the real me. Or am I missing something?

    • Tiny Martian says:

Nope, you’re not missing a thing, Karen. He sounds completely typical to me.

    • AngelaH says:

Yep. He’s just taking it to the next level. The other babies knew he was special and didn’t understand him so they treated him differently. I’m just picturing all the babies in the hospital gathered together in a little gossipy group and him all alone and misunderstood. That makes me laugh.

But yeah, typical teenager talk. I’m so different and deep and other people just can’t possibly understand. Oh well, at least he isn’t talking trash about other people and he seems to be sending out a positive message to other kids.

    • FingerBinger says:

He sounds every teenager brought up in the church of scientology.

    • Darkladi says:

Do we tell him how typical he really is? I don’t know if he could handle it

    • Kate says:

I was just coming here to say that. He does sound like every other teenager in the world.

  3. Tate says:

IDK, I still find them to be annoying kids.

  4. justme says:

    I cannot stand this kid.

  5. Chelsey says:

    Poseidon!?

    • mimi says:

I wanted to laugh too but you know what I can actually so get on board with this, like I can see his vision and it actually comes through in how he presents. Also, I have Artemis (certain artistic interpretations of her, of course, as I’m sure Jaden means with Poseidon) as one of my fashion inspirations, no joke, so there you go.
      😉

      • Lynnie says:

Same here with Athena and Aphrodite! Athena is actually my role model ever since I read the Percy Jackson series and then started researching more about Greek mythology. Him and I are the same age and for a while all things gods and goddesses were cool with our age group when we were younger, so the Poseidon thing could stem from that too.

      • Chelsey says:

But like, isn’t Poseidon just shirtless?? Lol

      • Hazel says:

In most renditions of Poseidon that I’ve seen he’d nude & carries a trident. I guess I’m not cool enough to see the fashion in that.

    • tegteg says:

I spit my coffee all over my keyboard when I read that. Does he mean Aquaman? This kid…. ahahahahaha no.

  6. doofus says:

I have watched the first six episodes of The Get Down and it’s great, though Jaden is the ONE weak part of it. his delivery of his lines is SO FLAT.

but the music is OUTSTANDING. and the rest of the cast is so good!

  7. tegteg says:

“When I was in the womb, I had a deep conversation with myself about the nature of the Universe and mankind’s quest for truth, and it’s something I’ll always remember fondly. We’re all stardust, but I’m, like, super purified stardust that’s extra delicate and introspective and people just don’t get that, you know? And that’s why other kids don’t like me. Because of blackholes and shi*.”

    Kill me.

  8. Lucy says:

Sometimes I see people (not particularly here) hating so hard on the Smith kids and I’m like…whoa? They’re just kids, and despite their eccentricities, they don’t seem bad or cruel. People change as they grow. Let them take it all out of their system now that they’re young.

  9. Cirque28 says:

Oh lord, this is what we’d all sound like if our parents had never said, “Take it down a notch, kid.”

However… Jaden is surprisingly awesome in The Get Down. I was prepared to scream “nepotism!” when I realized Will Smith’s kid was onscreen, but no, Jaden actually gives a beautifully subtle, nuanced performance.

  10. NeoCleo says:

I find them both interesting to look at. To listen to? Not so much.

  11. QQ says:

You KNOW what Im here to saaaayyyyy!!!

    LOLOL

    *Love the Hair

*Love the Pics ( those two children are perfect mixes of their parents, just as serendipitous as their names being good plays on their parents names?)

    * #carefereeBlackKids2016 ( Because ya’ll let Miley and Shailene and Countless other dingbats Cook until they stopped sounding Utterly stupid and obnoxious – I’m her eto Always remind you that I’m extending the same courtesy to these guys!)

    • senna says:

This interview made me think of Collier Meyerson’s shoutout to Willow Smith as the only Carefree Black Girl in existence back in in 2012 or so.

I think there’s so many worse things to be than overly precious, especially as a teen? I’d rather have a kid want to be a sensitive, artistic delicate flower than think they should be a douchey fratboy or a vapid prom queen. Long live weirdness! It takes a long time to become truly original or groundbreaking so why not start trying when you’re young?

  12. holly hobby says:

Wow don’t we sound precious here?

  13. pikawho? says:

I think he and his sister are cute weirdos but the Scientology thing makes me worry for them. I know they are probably shielded from most of the abuse as the children of celebrities is a cult that worships celebs, but its still a toxic environment.

I haven’t seen The Get Down yet because I have to be in a certain mood to watch anything Baz Luhrman related. His stuff is like walking into a room that’s been overperfumed.

    • Turtle says:

What a great description of Luhrman’s work. That’s exactly how I feel. Really wish he’d take it down a notch already.

  14. ygsf says:

This is not a typical teen. This is narcissism plus delusion plus scientology plus loads of money and privilege in Hollywood.

    • TyrantDestroyed says:

This. Even if they are only teens and inoffensive and prefer to be different IDK if their way of expressing themselves is due to the weird cult were brought into by their parents.

  15. Bobo says:

If you are ‘different’ you don’t usually have to constantly point it out.

    • Denise says:

Interesting how some desperately want to be seen as different while others would kill to blend.

  16. I’m all for people expressing themselves and opening their minds, but the world is very unforgiving and will crush your soul if you’re not prepared for it. These kids have been told they are special snowflakes their entire lives, but what they really are is frighteningly uneducated and narcissistic.
They are laughed at whenever they open their mouths because they are full on ignorant, but they have no clue why we laugh. In their minds it’s because we are all too stupid to understand their level of utter genius. They have been raised as fool for public consumption. And, it may be cute now, but when these children are full grown adults their embarrassing ignorance will not be so adorable.
Personally, it makes me sad to see these two obviously intelligent, seemingly kindhearted kids raised like this. They could be powerful, instead they are foolish and it’s a tragic waste.

    • frank says:

      word

      • Sunnydaze says:

I can’t remember the name of the movie, but it had Colin hanks in it and one of the scenes went on an out how the most unoriginal thoughts any human can have is that they’re meant for more, they’re somehow different from everyone else and they are the only one no one understands. My annoyance with these two is, like you’ve pointed out, they’ve been coddled and told “no, you really ARE special, people REALLY don’t understand” and are given a platform for it. Yeah, it’s great he’s into antibullying and all that but I vividly recall this site and others discussing his tweets on how people don’t need school. They are completely unaware of their privilege and how their words can influence other kids. And I blame their “parents” for a lot of it.

    • Neverwintersand says:

Yes, you nailed it. This ignorance will not simply melt away, when these kids reach adult age. They’ll become sheltered, uneducated, socially awkward adults.

  17. thaliasghost says:

I didn’t even come to your part and yes, that seemed like Scientology talking to me as well.

  18. Denise says:

I’m seeing a mini Terrence “1×1=2” Howard here.
