Rick Astley on the first time he got RickRolled: ‘I didn’t really get it’

Rewind Festival - Day 1 - Photocall
Former 80s crooner Rick Astley is 50 years old and he could still get it any day of the week. He’s got a new album out, 50, his first in 11 years, which has been incredibly successful. It hit number one on the UK charts when it came out in June and is currently holding strong at number 14. This might not have been possible for Astley were it not for the phenomenon of Rick Rolling, a harmless Internet prank where you misdirect a link to the video for 1987’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” RickRolling has lasted over 9 years, an eternity in Internet time. Astley has always expressed gratitude for Rick Rolling and in a new interview with People he explains how he came to understand what it was. It took him a while for it to fully sink in.

“A friend of mine Rick-Rolled me a couple of times, and I didn’t really know what he was doing. I just thought he was being an idiot,” he admits now. “I just kept thinking, ‘What is this idiot doing? This is just not amusing. I don’t really know what’s going on.’ So we eventually got on the phone and he explained it to me.”

Even with an explanation, it took some time to sink in. “To be honest, I still didn’t really get it. It took a few weeks for me to grasp.”

“When people ask me if I’m embarrassed by some of the ’80s videos, I say: ‘Well, kind of.’ But if you look back at some video clips of you getting married or some college thing you did, most people would be pretty embarrassed by that as well. If you put 25 years on something, it gets a bit interesting.”

These days Astley is busy on the road playing songs from 50 – his first album of all-original material in 15 years. Out in the United States this October, the disc shot to No. 1 when it was released in the U.K. last June.

Even with all of his recent success, he reflects on his Internet superstardom with good humor. “I only view it as a positive thing. I don’t think you can really have any bad thoughts about an Internet prank that turned your song into a global moment.”

That’s adorable and he’s so gracious about it. I just got RickRolled this summer. I was in the bathroom getting ready after a shower and I heard “Never Gonna Give You Up” playing loudly in the living room when I was the only one home! It would have been creepy if it wasn’t such an upbeat song. It turned out that I had left YouTube paused on the TV and my son was pranking me by playing the video remotely from his computer. I was more amused than mad because how can you get upset when Rick Astley is playing? I think that’s why that prank has lasted so long, it’s like someone is doing you a favor by putting some surprise Rick Astley in your day.

Fun fact: The Mets once got Rickrolled in 2008 when communities like Fark and Digg came together to vote for “Never Gonna Give You Up” as the fan-selected sing-along song in an Internet poll. Fox News called Astley a “has been English pop star” at the time but that’s no longer true!

Here’s the second single off Astley’s new CD, it’s called “Angels on My Side.” It’s very easy listening radio hit 80s and I like it. It’s not lighting up my life like classic Astley but it’s nostalgic and soothing and the video is clever.

He looks like an older, ginger version of Seth MacFarlane lol
I remember the listening to him in the 80s, I think he had only 2 big hits here in the US. Powerful voice

  2. Sixer says:

YouTube RickRolled me the other day with a suggested playlist and I never even listen to any pop music, let alone 80s pop music. Such is the power of the RickRoll.

My 13 year old Rick rolled me this year and I thought it was hilarious. I used to Rick roll my friend endlessly, and he would fall for it every single time. Such a silly thing, but still so amusing to me!

      • Sixer says:

It’s one of life’s little pleasures, isn’t it? Entirely harmless and you can’t help laughing!

I Rickrolled a music snob at work, sending him a link to an “important document.”

I’m with you Celebitchy. I love Rick.

He’s so classy is he not?
He could have been so offended and he was just perfectly gracious.

I remember him being interviewed about it a while back and he said the only way it would bother him is if his (high school age) daughter was embarrassed about it, but she wasn’t. He performed it in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade later that year, rickrolling everyone! I loved it. Never gonna give rickrolling up.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! (Except Trump, heh. I’d be glad to give him up. For adoption. On another planet.)

OMG I want to shake his friends’ hand. RickRolling Rick Astley! Priceless.

Melania Trump rick rolling herself during her RNC speech was the greatest Rick Roll of all time.

Yes, she did! I was just jumping on here to say that. I love Rick Astley. He seems like a nice guy.

    • PaschaP says:

Yep! Plus, it was a great 2 for 1 deal… not only did we get to Melania Rick Roll herself, we also got to witness the talented Laura Benanti do her eerily accurate Mrs. Trump impression again on Colbert!

He is adorable and that’s a cute story. And this man must have the Unicorn Blood Smoothie membership card because he looks amazingly the same.

And I love putting on the adult pop station in the car sometimes and belting out the songs from the 80’s and 90’s.

ETA: I can’t believe I was 14 when this song was released!

  10. PunkyMomma says:

Love that he’s enjoying the Rick-Rollin’ Ride. And he looks terrific!

  11. mayamae says:

That video is sort of hilarious. I was wondering when his angels were going to do anything but dance. Guess they needed to warm up.

  12. Cricket says:

I love the meme that went viral of a photo of him running for POTUS.. said to vote for Rick cause he “would never give you up, let you down or desert you”. was hilarious!

Agree about the best Rick Roll being Foo Fighters to the Westboro idiots.

  13. Jh says:

    He’s hot. Sorry not sorry.

  14. MrsK says:

Neither did I, Rick. Neither did I. I wrote a scathing email to that forum’s mod. Looking back, I hope it gave them a good laugh, and I hope it’s making Rick Astley some unexpected money.

Never gonna let you down, Rick.

    What a fun new video!

  16. Jaxx says:

I remember the very first time I saw him on TV. There was this little, bitty guy standing on a stage and then this HUGE voice came out of him. I did a double take! Love the new song.

Also, never heard of rickrolling until today.
