It’s no secret that Tom Hiddleston is going to attend the Emmy Awards this year. He openly and exhaustively campaigned for a nomination, and he’s been openly and exhaustively campaigning for the actual award. And before all of the Dragonflies complain about my use of “exhaustively,” let me just say… he IS exhausting. None of the other nominees in the category – Lead Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie – have campaigned as much as Tom. Much to my dismay, by the way – I would love to have more interviews from Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Bryan Cranston, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Courtney B. Vance. Incidentally, I recently read Deadline’s assessment of who will win this Emmy, and they think it will be Bryan Cranston. I think it will be Courtney B. Vance.
In any case, Tom Hiddleston is heading to the Emmys. And as I’m quickly losing my place in the betting pool – I said that Tiddles would be over by the Emmys – it’s looking more and more like Tom and Taylor Swift will still be together in September. Of course we’ve been saying this whole time that Tiddles might roll up to the Emmys together. And now The Sun is saying that it will happen, for sure.
Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift have become showbiz’s shining couple since I first revealed their secret relationship to the world in June. Now, after months of dinner dates and secret holidays, they are planning to go official next month by making their first proper public appearance together at the Emmy Awards. British heartthrob Tom is up for the Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Movie gong for his role in BBC drama The Night Manager and Taylor is set to be by his side to celebrate.
An awards insider told me: “Tom normally doesn’t like his public life overlapping with his private life but he is so happy with Taylor that it’s the perfect time. The event organisers have extended an invite for a ‘guest’ to join him because they know if they walk the red carpet together it will make it the most talked-about show of the year. While the Emmys may be about celebrating the best shows on television, the organisers that weekend are looking for just one show — Taylor and Tom. The Emmys red carpet itself would give them the most publicity, and organisers have made it clear to Tom and his reps that she is more than welcome to join him.”
But there is competition from other events who are vying to get them both together as guests. I’ve learned the LA branch of Bafta is throwing a private tea party the night before the awards, which will be attended by the best British actors in town. My source said: “The organisers have extended an invite to Tom and his guests, knowing that Taylor loves British tea, Downton Abbey and is a fan of many TV stars from this country.”
The way this is being built up now, I’m sort of wondering if we’re getting all hyped up over nothing. Even if Taylor goes to the Emmys with Tom, would they even walk the carpet together, or would she slip inside while he did the carpet alone? That’s what happened several times when she dated Calvin Harris – they never “did” a red carpet together, but would often sit with each other. As for the BAFTA LA pre-Emmy event, that’s something I hadn’t considered. There’s a red carpet for that as well, but they also allow a few exclusive photographers inside to take photos. I could see Tiddles at BAFTA LA, very easily. Also: “…knowing that Taylor loves British tea…” What does that even mean? Tay-Tay loves the tea? Or is that slang for “Tay loves to bang British men”? I love Clive Owen’s tea. I would drink it up.

I just can’t with this “Awards Insider” gambit. The “Awards Insider” knows what Emmy presenters think, what Tom himself thinks about his personal relationships, and what BAFTA thinks? Also, he would get a plus one no matter who he was dating or not dating and whether or not that person watched Downton Abby. The red carpet shows are separate from the awards show itself and get different ratings.

I live in LA and was here during the OJ trial. It was over a year long. (Those poor jurors.) You could not get away from it. I was not interested in seeing it played out all over again in a mini series but the acting was SO GREAT. I hope Paulson gets every award they can give her for her Marcia Clark.

Yes, I’ll be shocked if Hiddleston wins; the competition is too formidable. I haven’t seen Bryan Cranston’s performance as LBJ, but Courtney B. Vance was fantastic. I’m also disappointed that no one from the show Fargo was nominated in this category. All the actors involved in that show were outstanding.
Also, I hope that TS wears an outfit with a sparkly “I Love TH” emblem.

I’m actually surprised that Taylor and Tom have weathered the whole “receipts” storm from a few weeks back. They’ve been relatively low-key. I could see them use the Emmys as a re-introduction to the world, with the hope that enough time has passed so people are ready to embrace them again as the new It Couple.
Yep. The reduction in staged pap shots was directly connected to Kims receipts. They will probably be testing for public perception with a red carpet stroll. Her people will be monitoring social media very closely that night. If that goes well, I expect they’ll announce the new album shortly. If it doesnt, then perhaps after another month or so.

I’m starting to think he might win. Not because he gave a better performance but because we know that voters ARE swayed by publicity. A lot of them dont even watch the shows entirely, they just view the submitted clips. Thats how certain shows and actors who you would think would be clear choices dont win; the other side just ran a more prominent campaign and the voter recognised their name on the ballot, et cetera. In a fair world, he wouldnt win of course. There are at least three guys on that list with stronger work.
I read underdogs could win because votes could be divided between 2 shows which leaves the 3rd most popular show with a win.
There’s a lot of old white guys that vote on Emmys which is why they seem to stick to the same ol’ few shows/actors each year.
This year, it would be interesting to see that if voters ticked so many boxes for the acting categories in favor of People vs OJ (6 nods in three categories), makes some wonder if they’ll be straight-ticket voting for that series this year. Not only was it a popular show with great performances, but it ticks the diversity boxes with a woman and three POC in the running. I see most voting for either Vance or Cranston and the others nominees not having enough of the remaining votes to get ahead of those two.
It’s a small possibility but anyone who underestimates the popularity of Bryan Cranston does so at their peril. Also Cranston was superb which helps.
My favourite scenario? Benedict Cumberbatch wins. He’s already won Best Actor in the past (and doesn’t deserve it this year) but I would SCREAM with laughter if he took it with zero campaigning! Scream!! 😉
And given that Cumberbatch’s performance was the worst of those nominated, it really would be a scream worthy moment. And a slap in the face from the voters to Cranston, Vance, and Elba.
I agree that he doesn’t deserve to win this year, but I want this more than I can possibly explain for so many reasons.

I love the character that LF plays on Lewis, that sort of erudite nerdy type, with flaws, really appeals to me, for my sins. Also his legs are near rivals to LEGS for length, and that is another of my penchants. Of course his family entitlement, and the fact that he could tolerate being in close proximity to Billie Piper (who I think is actually an excellent actress (Penny Dreadful) BTW) are two insurmountable negatives against him. His pissy, judgemental attitude doesn’t help either. At least LEGS makes the effort to be somewhat gracious.
Laurence Fox has always been an entitled mega douche. He’s never had much of a career and seems to mostly do theatre outside of his regular gig in Lewis. I never got what Billie Piper saw in him, she always came across as OK but then again, have heard stories that she can also be a bit pretentious specially now that she’s known as a serious actress (rather than the tween pop star she once was) but I like her work and acting does seem to be where her talent lies. Shame she has douchy taste in men.
Now that Fox and Piper have split, I’ll confess I really want Tom and Billie to hook up for a short, messy and very public affair. I want shameless public displays of affection and tabloid stories about how she found solace after her divorce with a kind and thoughtful Hiddleston – who is everything her ex-husband was not. I find Fox to be an insufferable douche waffle, with an ego that is disproportionate to his accomplishments and talent, but he’s good spectacle when he loses his cool and goes on a rant about something. Can you imagine his reaction if he sees tabloid photos of his ex-wife snogging his arch-rival on a romantic getaway somewhere? Now that is the quality entertainment I look for in celebrity gossip.

Since Tom’s more about using images rather than talking specifically and giving just enough to talk about but not enough to confirm, I could see a possible engagement being hinted to on Emmys night.
Here’s a scenario: Tom on the RC alone, Tay spotted separately with a ring on her finger that gets people speculating for hours (days?) about whether or not they’re engaged. They’ll sit together and when he sees that he’s on camera, he will pull her hand to his mouth, kiss it and they’ll look lovingly into each others eyes. Lots of showy affection during the ceremony. Online, there will be lots of chatter as fans speculate and do photo analysis while her team does not confirm anything, so it’s a publicity win without *seemingly* trying to grab the spotlight.
I like your confidence, but gotta disagree. They haven’t acted accordingly to any of this mess all summer. I think they’ll do it, end up being incredibly ridiculous and inappropriate and the ridicule will continue. I hope he tells her to step off the Emmy’s but the fact that her go-to Brit outlet has an insider about this suggests that she won’t.
I’m with QueenB – I think Taylor’s go to British source has been briefed in a market-testing/public response exercise to the idea of their doing the RC together. I think the strategy for this ‘romance’ has altered as it’s been met, so far, with such derision. A quick trawl of the Internet suggests, other than diehard Swifties and her paid shills, there’s a public response of “meh” to “oh not this PR stunting couple again, now set to try and overshadow the event/nominees/winners”. I think Tom leaving the window of doubt open on his attendance at all – because of work in Oz – was by design so they could conduct this market testing.
Responses so far suggest he’d be better staying in Oz anyway – and I think he’s less likely to win than I did so before because of his over conspicuous “exhaustive” campaigning. He could be the “shock win” of the night due to his personal profile raising but the backlash to that (with Cranston and Vance in the mix) would be a major PR disaster for him; especially if coupled with the whole event being overtaken by his popstrel ‘girlfriend’ in attendance. They’d look even more like publicity leeches than they already do.
Finally, nominees always get +1s and BAFTA alway has a Tea Party, also with +1s. Taylor, when briefing her Sun source, just couldn’t resist trying to make her/them sound special or exceptional in this.
I think there’d be very low tolerance for them doing this.
My bet they won’t walk the carpet they will attend before/after parties. There will be plenty of PDA photos and stories.
Dippit, I thought the same thing. Just as rumors of them post-Met Gala were used to see how to public would respond to them as a s couple, this most recent leak is taking the temp of the public now that they’ve been laying low the past few weeks.
If she attends the Emmys, she will certainly overshadow him and his nomination. It will be all about her. If he is the “shock” win, there will be an outcry over Vance’s loss as well as Cranston’s since they were much better performances.
But, I think both of them are too thirsty not to show up and promote themselves, so I’m expecting to see her there. I shall take pleasure in the taking the mickey if they do.

@lilac – it was more than a rumor Tom turned it down, although I don’t think it got as far as an official offer – more of an informal inquiry from Sony to his agent about Tom’s interest. Another email in the same chain @sarahd sampled above has him politely declining, saying he wanted to play a spy in earnest before he started lampooning the genre. Not too long after that he snagged The Night Manager. I’m trying very hard to forget Mark Strong said yes that dreck – he’s better than that. IMO, Strong needs to be more selective in his choices, he has done wonderful work but also has some real stinkers on his CV.
