Tom Hanks on his marriage to Rita Wilson: I got lucky, like winning the lottery

Happy Valentine's Day 28 years of ❤️💕❤️💕

Last Valentines, Rita Wilson posted the above picture to Instagram. Just recently, she and husband Tom Hanks celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary, for which Rita posted this selfie from their anniversary trip:

I love him

The best part of that picture? The caption. Pure, uncomplicated and honest. According to Tom, he is pretty lucky to be in those photos at all. He admitted that timing was everything because had they met in high school, “I wouldn’t have the courage to talk to her in the hallway… I’m a lucky man.” He also said there is no secret, he just, “got lucky” and that being with Rita is like, “winning the lottery,” because, according to Tom, Rita is out of his league.

On Sunday, “Extra’s” Renee Bargh sat down with Tom Hanks, who dished on his marriage to Rita Wilson.

The pair recently took a vacation and posted a cute selfie together on Instagram. He gushed, “We get along, I must say.” As for the secret to their marriage, he dished, “Picking the right person, ya know. I got lucky, she could have done better.”

[From Extra]

Rita and Tom’s happy marriage is a constant we’ve come to expect. Like Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, we would just ball our fists if someone tried to suggest that their relationship was in trouble or a lie. Rita posting the selfies above merely acts as a reminder that the earth is rotating in the proper direction.

And yet, it actually speaks to so much more. Tom’s talked previously about being raised in an unstable household, having several step-families and his father constantly uprooting them. He said this gave him a sense of loneliness that Rita finally eliminated. Their attraction to each other was undeniable from the beginning, to the detriment of their relationships at the time, but they both understood that what they had was different. Tom explained to Ellen Degeneres in 2013, “I view my wife as my lover, and we have a bond that goes beyond words like wife or girlfriend or mother.” To me, the simplicity in how they speak about each other and their relationship convinces me they are #relationshipgoals. Because there is no need for hyperbole if you aren’t trying to convince yourself of something that isn’t there. I swear, I could listen to Tom talk about Rita all day.

I love Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. I really do….

But, he did cheat on his first wife with Rita. He divorced that wife. Then he married Rita immediately after.

A lot of women praise their natural, normal energy and longterm love….but those same women would condemn how they met (an affair). But they don’t because, well, it’s Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, one of the more natural longterm Hollywood couples. It’s an interesting double standard.

A great example of moral picking-and-choosing. It’s hard not to like them though, it really is! They give off a very likable vibe.

I wonder how many people know how their relationship started. I didn’t…until recently.

Does anyone know what happened to the first wife? Some first wives forgive the husband for moving on to someone else, and I wonder if that’s what happened in this case, and why we never hear from the first one. I figure the National Enquirer would seek her out for some quotes. If we heard more from the first wife or the first son about their bitterness about what happened, maybe the public would be less forgiving. But in this case, it seems no one talks about what happened.

        @perplexed

I believe she died of bone cancer in the early 2000s 🙁

She actually said some revealing things about him before she died. Things that made it seem like he isn’t the everyman nice guy. Just like everybody, I hope it isn’t true. My guess though is..it is. It’s a lot like what I hear about Aaron Paul, gushing over his wife and then people see him making out with chicks in dark corners of West Hollywood establishments.

You want to believe these people are good people. But, sometimes they aren’t.

I am so happy for them. But I can’t help but feel bad for them because that son of there’s is such a mess. That “rapper”…. what the heck happened?! They seem so lovely. How did they raise that?

    • HH says:

Oh yeah… I forgot about him. So, at least they keep him hidden away somewhat.

But, I love love. And theirs is absolutely heartwarming.

I’d like to think Chet or whatever his name is was the kid they tried but couldn’t handle. Their other son goes to Stanford and you don’t hear about him.

      • Lama Bean says:

And the other son (Colin) is doing well as an actor (Life in Pieces)

      • perplexed says:

Was Colin raised by the first mom on a more normal salary? I wondered if that’s why he turned out normal. I have the same impression of Will Smith’s first son. The other mom had some influence over him, and he seems so much more normal than the kids he had with Jada Pinkett Smith.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

Their son went to school in Bevelery Hills. Parents can only do so much when 10 hours of their kids life is being surrounded by whatever they’re picking up at school. Their son reminds me of that movie Malibu’s Most Wanted. Not every aspect of their life can be perfect.

    • GingerCrunch says:

And may I add that people produce children with mental illness, personality disorders and addiction issues despite their circumstances all around the world, throughout time. Sometimes it’s the luck of the draw when we decide to have kids. :/

He did Desert Island Discs (popular radio show here in the UK) and cried when he spoke about loneliness. I think the whole nation cried too. Horrible feeling. Here’s the clip, and I dare anyone not to cry themselves. I did. With snot.

Whole show here. He is a DELIGHTFUL interview.

Like Paul Newman, Tom Hanks’s infidelity seems to be forgotten because the woman he cheated with has become his long-time second wife. I guess it helps when the first wife is a non-celebrity. But it’s hard not to like him.

I love that Rita posted a pic of herself without makeup. She looks like Melissa McBride, who I think is gorgeous.

    • marley says:

      Yea was gonna say this….

He cheated on his first wife with Rita.

    • perplexed says:

I think Paul Newman and Tom Hanks were lucky to have come of age during different screen eras. I wonder how their marriages would have been scrutinized today in today’s tabloid culture.

Paul Neman did admit that he was wrong in his infidelity, so I do think it’s hard to come after someone when they admit their wrongdoing. When someone admits that what they did was lacking in ethics or conventional morals, that sort of stops the tabloid conversation in its tracks. Other people in Hollywood will often talk about how they started their new relationships with “integrity” and when you use that word, the tabloids are going to want to come after you and the public will look at you with more scrutiny. I don’t think Paul Newman ever talked about what he did with Woodward as having integrity — I think he admitted that what he did was a violation of the marriage contract.

    Relationship goals, all the way.

I am sure they work at it like any other couple, but they are inspirational to me

  6. Teddy says:

I love their love but I’ve also heard so many stories about how Rita is a piece of work and treats non-famous/non-important people terribly. So many stories.

  7. atiaofthejulii1 says:

I hope he hasn’t cheated on Rita. There are stories…

  8. mellie says:

    So sweet…

  9. Spiderpig says:

Haven’t there been a ton of rumours about him cheating?

    • molly says:

He cheated on his first wife with Rita. At the time, he had two children w/the first wife (unknown theatre actress).

Post-divorce from wife #1 was finalized he married Rita…I think months after, actually!

    • Elise says:

Yes! I’m thinking of a fairly recent Lainey blind that may (or may not) have been about him.

  10. casivas says:

    Love!!

  11. Jenny says:

I’m not sure I like Tom Hanks that much, he may very well be not so nice in real life, but he does have one of the best definitions of love I’ve ever heard. He said once that love is friendship without the effort. To me, who also feel like I won the lottery when I met and married my husband, that definition captures what love is perfectly.
