Naya Rivera bought herself breast implants as a gift for her 18th birthday

Last week, I learned that Naya Rivera has written a memoir called Sorry Not Sorry. She’s pretty young to have a memoir, for sure, but everything I’ve read about Naya so far has left me feeling pretty good about her choice to write it. Naya described her choice to have an abortion back in 2010, on her one day off from Glee. We heard about that last week, and this week, we’re hearing about how she decided to get breast implants on her 18th birthday.

Former Glee star Naya Rivera knew exactly what she wanted to gift herself with on her 18th birthday: breast implants.

“I went around to all my teachers, told them I was going to be out. ‘I’m getting plastic surgery!’ I’d tell them gleefully,” Rivera says in her upcoming memoir. “My art teacher was stoked – when I told her she said that she too had fake tits and that she was very excited for me.”

“My new boobs were a confidence thing, not a sexual thing,” says Rivera, who paid for the surgery with money she’d saved from childhood jobs on Family Matters and The Royal Family. “I’d never even taken my top off for a guy. I hadn’t had many opportunities to do so, but even if I had, my bra was always stuffed with napkins.”

Not that her classmates didn’t take notice of her new curves.

“As soon as I went back to school, [the boys] all practically fell over themselves rushing to see who could hold the door open for me,” she writes.

Rivera says her parents did not approve of her choice to get breast implants at the time, but she’s never second guessed herself.

“People have a lot of opinions about plastic surgery, but more than ten years after I got my boobs, they still make me happy when I look in the mirror. It might have even been the best $8K I’ve ever spent.”

[From People]

This reminds me a lot of something Kaley Cuoco said in an interview a few years back. Kaley also got implants when she was 18, and she still considers the choice the “best decision I ever made.” I do believe Naya and Kaley when they say that they did it for themselves. I have parts on my body that I think about “correcting” or “fixing” just for me, not because I want to make someone else happy. I think for some women, getting implants does boost their confidence and make them happier. Speaking as someone who has been big-chested since I was 13, it’s a double-edged sword though – I didn’t want to be so busty at such a young age. Sigh… everybody’s got their own issues, I guess that’s my point.

She’s so pretty, why does she do the Kardashian pout thing? Her memoir seems pretty interesting and rather her than Lea Michele.

Was the new face a gift for her 19th birthday?

I don’t remember what she looked like before but it couldn’t have been so bad that she felt the need to do that to herself. She just looks so ‘done’. Her mouth hurts.

Yes she looks frozen. I vaguely remember her. I think when I saw an episode of Glee, she could actually move her face.

  3. Aussieboy says:

And then she bought Kim Kardashians face…..?

I was always a large A, small B cup and was happy with that. But some people aren’t and I get it. She seems to have gotten implants that fit her body frame well. I never understand women who get implants so large that they look ridiculous.

    • Emma says:

I’m an A cup. Sometimes it would be nice to wear dresses that fit both my top and bottom halves or wear those gorgeous lacy bras without padding (not made in my size) but beyond that ehhh. Have never had any desire to increase my size.

I am going to read her book for sure. She has a story in there about telling Brad Falchuk that he sucks at his job.

Getting something “fixed” that really bothers you… Yes, I can understand that. But this woman has a new face. I saw old pics of her… She was really pretty.
Some of these people are getting surgery instead of figuring out what’s really wrong. That’s her business. But it seems to me that instead of fixing insecurities… They are wearing them around on the outside for everyone to see. And how does someone like that even begin to approach getting older?

I agree. And although she says it wasn’t for sexual purposes, but about boosting her confidence, her next sentence is about high school boys falling over each other to hold doors open for her. Ummm…..I’d say that is sexual, not in the sense that she’s having sex with these boys/men, but the attention and notice is definitely sexual. It seems to me that “confidence” goes hand-in-hand with feeling sexually attractive to men.

      • Lucky jane says:

@ jenniferjustice… I have never understood when an actress tries to make that distinction anyway. I am flat chested and when I was younger I wanted bigger boobs. And I guess it was a confidence thing but it was also most definitely about looking a certain way and being sexually attractive. Maybe I am just projecting… But for what other reason are women getting these boob jobs? They don’t make you smarter and you don’t run faster. I guess I don’t understand making that distinction. Is it trying to convince everyone you did it for a “good” reason instead of a “bad” reason? I mean… I personally didn’t care what my boobs looked like… It was most definitely about what everyone else in the world thought. Maybe I am just a weirdo.

I also want to add that getting plastic surgery at 18 seems really young. I hope that’s not a common thing. It took me a lot of years to get over hang ups about my body. I am so grateful I never changed anything. We aren’t all supposed to look perfect or look alike. It just seems sad that beautiful young women pick themselves apart. I am so glad I don’t have a daughter. Kids growing up today are totally bombarded by these plastic people.

Good for her. I think her implants look better than Taylor Swift’s and Kaley Cuoco’s both of whom got implants that don’t seems to sit properly or are too big.

    • KB says:

I think Kaley Cuoco’s look pretty natural. She seems to have more actual breast tissue naturally, but Taylor and Naya don’t so they end up with really obvious round implants.

  9. Gaby says:

She doesn’t seem to be able to close her mouth.

  10. Dumbledork says:

Was her new face a Christmas present?

  11. Georgia says:

Good for her. If I had the money at 18 I might have done the same.

  12. Linds says:

I’m pretty sure there were rumors going around when she was with Big Sean that she had gotten implants, but she denied it then…?

  13. thaliasghost says:

Nope Naya, just nope. Thought I might like her after the abortion story, but nope. If it is a “confidence thing” then why normalize huge breasts as the only acceptable body form for women out there and create a vicious circle in which other women feel the need to have surgery on their perfectly natural breasts…

  14. Veronica says:

Eh, I wouldn’t have gotten it done quite that young (you can see some variation in size from hormones well into your twenties), but at the end of the day, it’s her body and her choice. *shrugs* The smallest I’ve ever been was a C, and I’m in the DD range. Mine are balanced to my body type, though, so I’m not too bothered by them, but I’ve had to bypass plenty of outfits because I couldn’t close buttons or go braless or had that nice, round look some smaller breasts have. There are pros and cons to both sides of the spectrum.

  15. Jenn says:

    She’s so vapid and desperate.
